UFO Case Directory (Animal Effect Cases):
“Redlands, California
February 4, 1968”

(NICAP.org)

The whole UFO case report:
Animal Reaction Feature:
Between 7:20 and 7:25 p.m. in a residential area, many people over several streets came outdoors because of the unusual barking of the dogs in the neighborhood and/or because of an unusual sound. A circular object at an estimated altitude of 300 feet was seen moving slowly to the ENE.

Joan Woodward, Animal Reaction Specialist:
It is estimated that 200 people saw or heard this object, including four University of Redlands professors (geology, mathematics, chemistry, and art) who became involved in the investigation. The object’s size was estimated to be 50 feet in diameter. It had lights on the base that appeared to expel jets of orange flame, and it had lights on the top that alternated red and green, giving the impression the object was rotating.

The object flew slowly for about a mile, stopped and hovered briefly, jerked forward, hovered, and then shot straight up at high speed.

The sound was reported as a high-pitched modulated whining sound.  Professor Seff (geology) concluded that the sound heard by many (and recorded by a minister) was that of an emergency rescue vehicle and was not coming from the object overhead. Professor Brownfield (art) did a composite drawing based on witnesses who saw the object from a variety of angles.

The sound is questionable. McDonald (1968) indicates witnesses reported physiological effects with no further explanation. No EM effects were reported.”

NICAP.org also presents an excerpt from Ronald D. Story’s book, Encyclopedia of UFOs. You will find it by clicking the link, “Case Report – Story.”

UFO Case Report (E-mail):
“Subject: Merced CA, April 4, 1949”

By Joan Woodward, Animal Reaction Specialist, 3 December 2005
(NICAP.org)

The whole UFO case report:
Animal Reaction Feature:

At 10:20 PM, the witness and his dog went outdoors. The witness heard an intense clicking sound coming from the sky and saw a dark object as it moved against the background of stars. The witness described his dog’s reaction as follows: ‘My dog was with me and directed her attention in the general direction of this object’s flight throughout its course. She had been romping with me on coming out of the house but without spoken word [she] stopped and directed her attention to the previously described area [dark object flight path].’

The sighting:

This sighting is listed as a Blue Book unknown.

Weather: Castle AFB weather station reported thin/broken clouds at 20,000 feet, 12 mile visibility and surface winds as north at 9 mph. The witness reported his area (1 mile west of Merced and 7 miles south of Castle AFB) was more sheltered and had no appreciable surface wind.

The witness is a Major in the Active USAF Reserves. He is a pilot, with 2200 hours flight time, including night flying in WWII.  He reported the sighting to the Intelligence Officer at Castle Field.

Duration of sighting: 35-45 seconds (including sound and visual)

The witness came outdoors with his dog and heard a ‘clicking noise of considerable intensity.’ He stopped, locating the sound as coming from the sky about 40 degrees from eastern horizon.  He observed a dark shape moving against the background of stars in a flight path to the West or NW.

He described the object as a solid mass whose size he estimated as 4-5 feet in diameter and whose altitude he estimated as considerably less than 1,000 feet.  On two occasions the reflection of streetlights, located ½ block behind the witness, made the object appear to have a dull-surface and one of light colored metal. Also, the reflection of the streetlights off the surface of the object made the witness think that the under-surface was curved. No exhaust trail was seen. No lights or flame observed. No whistle or roar, only a clicking sound that maintained the same pitch and speed, but altered in loudness (see below). The clicking sound was compared to the beaters of a home mixer that were not properly meshed.

The dark object moved slowly going the West or NW, made a 90-degree-arc turn to the South or SW. The clicking sound became louder on the new heading. The clicking sound stopped when it was the loudest (seemingly overhead relative to the witness) and the witness was unable to detect the object after the sound ceased.

No EM effects or physiological effects were reported.

UFO Case Report (E-mail):
“Subject: Groveton MO, February 9, 1968”

By Joan Woodward, 26 November 2005
(NICAP.org)

Quote from the UFO case report:
Animal Reaction Feature:
In the early morning darkness, the witness heard cows in a pasture in front of his house bawling as if frightened. He looked out a window and saw a large circular object hovering 20 to 25 feet above the ground and 300 to 350 feet from the house.  The glow associated with the object was bright enough that the witness could see furniture in the house, could see limbs on trees, and the fence between the pasture and house. The glow also allowed him to see the cattle that were in a rough semicircle about 100 to 200 feet from the object. Some cows with calves were bawling and being answered by calves. Then one cow whirled and ran toward the barn, followed within seconds by all the others. Throughout the sighting there was a distinct swishing sound (like a piece of wire whirled at high speed) with a pulsating rhythm.

The Sighting:
This sighting is included on the list of Blue Book ‘Unknowns (#12235).’  The time of the sighting was reported as 4:30 am by Skylook (1970) and as 3:20 am by Hynek (1977). The witness resides on a farm. He is nearsighted (but can drive without glasses) and viewed these events without glasses. Hynek felt he was a stable, factual witness. His house sits ¼ mile from a road and the pasture is between the house and the road.

After being alerted as described above and seeing the cattle run toward the barn, the witness focused on the object. He saw a circular object estimated as 100 feet in diameter with at least one concave side from which came yellow-green light. The witness saw 7 openings in the center of the concave side. Without glasses he was not sure if the openings were round or square, but estimated them to be 2 to 2.5 feet in diameter.

The duration of the sighting was estimated with uncertainty, but was probably greater than 1 minute and less than 5 minutes. The object departed by rapidly rising at a 45 degree angle but maintained the horizontal position the craft held during hovering.  On departure, the swishing sound became 2-3 times louder and the pulsations became more rapid.

UFO Case Report (E-mail):
“Subject: Emden MO, July 13, 1973”

By Joan Woodward, Animal Reaction Specialist, 11 April 2006
(NICAP.org)

The whole UFO case report:
Animal Reaction Feature:
A dog that was normally outdoors at night and that normally barked at and chased any animal that came near the house, began barking at 3:30 AM. This barking was unusual, described as a ‘scared’ bark, causing the witness to get up and see what was happening.

The dog was barking at a glowing object and would not leave the porch. Normally in that situation, the dog would take off after whatever had attracted its attention. The witness stated that this night the dog was clearly afraid and continued barking from the porch and would not leave the porch.

The witness also noted he heard cattle bellowing on a hill, and when the light moved off, he heard neighbor’s dogs start barking. [No information was given on the location of the cattle or of the neighbor’s house relative to witness and the unknown light.—jw]

The Sighting:
The object was described as egg shaped or oblong, about the size of an average car.  It had a 3-dimensional appearance, ‘like you could look through it, or right into it.’  The outside was orange and toward the center it was brighter and a slightly different color.  The colors were described as similar to setting sun but not dark enough to be considered red. The night was very quiet with no wind.

The witness made an effort to hear any sound from the object but heard nothing.  He noted that even when the object started moving, he still could hear nothing.

The object, judging by a tree in front of it, was estimated to be 20 feet or less from the ground and was in the area of a clearing. It remained still and in view for about 10 minutes. Then  the witness’s wife, watching from indoors while he watched from the porch, turned on house lights. At that point, the object flickered slightly and started moving away slowly and steadily, maintaining its low altitude. It speed was estimated as 5 mph and it was moving in a northwest direction. The object was lost to sight after after 20 seconds as it became obscured by trees. The witness heard the neighbor’s dogs start barking about 3 minutes later. [The only direction indicated was that the glowing object disappeared moving to the NW. Using YourSky (fourmilab.ch/yoursky/) to see if any bright objects were near the horizon at the time of the sighting, I found Mars was roughly 35° in the SE sky, unlikely a factor.  However, the 97% illuminated moon was due to set  4:05 AM (verified with USNO) and would have been very near the horizon SW horizon. I cannot say the setting moon was or was not involved in this sighting without directions and knowledge of the topography. The witness reports the dog was reacting in the direction of the glowing object, suggesting something was happening other than the moon setting. However, it is always possible that the dog was reacting to something other than what the witness was watching.—jw]

My comment:
The October 1975 Espevær (island), Norway, UFO landing incident involved dogs that barked hysterically. Several dog owners said their dogs had never earlier reacted like they did that evening.

UFO Case Report (E-mail):
“Subject: MacMillan Pass,
NWT/Yukon Border, Canada, Mid July 1988”

By Joan Woodward, Animal Reaction Specialist, 4 April 2006
(NICAP.org)

The whole UFO case report:
Animal Reaction Feature:
Three men were transporting horses in a high-sided, open topped truck to the MacMillan Pass summit. Arriving in the afternoon at the unloading site, one of the men took his camera and walked 600 feet or so away to take a photograph of mountains to the south. As he looked through the viewfinder he heard an extremely loud fluttering sound approaching from behind and above.

After getting a photograph of the object, the witness ran toward the truck. The horses, not yet unloaded, were panicked. They were trying to jump out of the truck, and the two ‘outfitters’ were desperately trying to calm them and to keep them from injuring themselves. Eventually the horses did calm. The outfitters did not see the unknown object, but commented that they had never before seen the horses react in this way.

The Sighting:
When the witness heard the loud sound approaching behind and above him (putting the unknown about 600-700 feet from the horses), he kept one eye on the viewfinder and caught a glimpse of the object passing above him out of the corner of his other eye. Then, almost instantly, he caught the object in the viewfinder as it rapidly flew over the valley in front of him. It appeared to slow, and he snapped a picture.  The object wavered and turned to the right and accelerated. It became silent as it changed direction. It disappeared into the distance flying up the valley.

Martin Jasek analyzed the photograph, which shows an object with a domed top and a rectangular-looking bottom.* Jasek’s calculated angular size of the object in the photograph is 0.28° (0.55 moon diameter).

Duration of the sighting was in seconds.  The unknown’s altitude when over the witness’s head was estimated as 1500-1800 feet. The peak visually nearest the unknown object (in the photograph) is about 4000 m (13,000 feet) away (email, Jasek to Woodward, March 22, 2006 and April 20, 2006).

No EM or physiological effects were reported.

UFO Case Directory (ANRECAT):
“Rotating Object & Animal Reaction
Feb. 15, 1963
Willow Grove, Australia”

(NICAP.org)

The whole UFO case report:
Keith Basterfield:
February 15, 1963; Willow Grove, Australia
7:10 hrs local time. Farmer Charles Brew and his son Trevor were in a milking shed, milking a herd of cows. Charles saw an object descend very steeply out of the east out of low cloud, at about a forty-five degree angle. The object was described as about 25 feet in diameter, and about 9-10 feet high. The lower portion, about three feet high, was rotating in an anti-clockwise direction, and was of a bluish appearance. The upper portion of the object appeared to be stationary; battleship grey in colour, with a transparent dome on top. Protruding out of this dome was something which resembled a broom handle. A sound, described as a ‘swishing’ or ‘burbling’ was heard by Charles and also by Trevor. Trevor did not see the object due to his position in the milking shed. The weather at the time was described as low cloud, with rain. Visibility was poor with no thunder or lightning. The wind Charles said, was from the east. The object travelled across the sky, and using a tree for a reference, Charles estimated the object came as close as 75 feet. When due north of him, it hovered over a tree for a few seconds, and then took off to the W at a very fast speed, at an estimated 45 degree angle and lost in the low cloud. The total duration was 15-16 seconds. Cows, and a nearby horse, reacted by running away from the shed area. Charles reported he had a headache (an unusual occurrence for him) following the event, which lasted a day. He also reported a slight drop in milk production from the herd, over the week following the incident. (Sources: (1) RAAF file series A703, control symbol 580-1-1 part 4, pp373-390. UFO Report:
“1957 Sighting Wave Chronology –
Close Encounters and Nuclear Connections”

Created: 5 February 2006,
Updated: 18 June 2017 (as of 7 November 2017)
(NICAP.org)

Quote from the report:
“2017 marks the 60th anniversary of the wave of 1957. This is an extensive report on an on-going project involving a number of people. I would not have been able to do this without the help of Rebecca Wise (Project Blue Book Archive), Dan Wilson (archive case researcher), Jean Waskiewicz (NICAP Database), Brad Sparks (Comprehensive Catalog of Project Blue Book Unknowns),  Barry Greenwood (newspaper clippings), Mark Rodegher (‘UFO Reports Involving Vehicle Interference’ [441 Cases], Loren Gross (UFOS A History), and Joan Woodward (Animal Reaction Database).

A major sighting wave year, 1957 is best-known for the Levelland, Texas sightings which began on Nov. 2. However, the key cases are the IFF electronic signaling and radar-emitting UFO cases such as RB-47 (July 17) and several others within a week or two before and after, the radioactivity case at Montville, Ohio (Nov. 6) and the nuclear weapons storage area case at Kirtland AFB, New Mexico (Nov 4), all cases of supreme scientific value. Prior to the wave flap, the Sept 20, 1957 radar tracking caused a White House and top intelligence alert. A very important year in UFOlogical history. Throughout this summary are posted key reports from the highly-acclaimed publication, ‘UFOs & Government.’ ”

NICAP.org also presents fourteen binders of newspaper clippings from 1957 on this web page!

I first reported about the UFO report on 8 July 2011.

UFO Case Directory (Animal Effect Cases):
“Sandy Hook, Connecticut
March 31, 1983”

(NICAP.org)

The whole UFO case report:
Animal Reaction Feature:
At 8:30 pm, Thunder, a 175-pound Great Dane, ‘went crazy’ and barked for 3 minutes. His owner, Cindy Tillison, went to see what was going on. Thunder was standing at the sliding doors in the kitchen barking toward the woods. When Tillison looked, she saw a huge V-shaped object. The object remained for 20 minutes and, throughout this time, Thunder appeared frightened and barked continuously with ears straight up. The next day he refused to go out.

Joan Woodward, Animal Reaction Feature:
The V-shaped object was glowing a very bright auburn color and had lights similar to headlights but much larger. When Tillison flicked her floodlights on and off, the object appeared to move in response, after which she left the lights off. During the 20 minutes of observation, the object projected a big, steady beam of light, seemingly from its center. The beam was very wide, estimated a little less than half the size of the object. The big round lights did change, going off [and on?—jw] and changing colors. The object disappeared when the witness was not looking.

No sound was mentioned. No EM effects or physiological effects were reported.

UFO Case Report:
“Subject: Ramona, California, October 15, 1974”

1 October 2005
By Joan Woodward, Animal Reaction Specialist
(NICAP.org)

The case involves possible U.S. Navy jets.

The whole UFO case report:
Animal Reaction Feature:
Witnesses noted numerous animal reactions when a circular object flew overhead. The object’s altitude was not estimated, but the object appeared to have landed on a hillside before rising and flying overhead.

·        Horses excitedly whinnied and bucked, one kicked a rail off a fence.
·        One chained dog ran excitedly in and out of its doghouse, sometimes smashing into the back of the doghouse with great force.
·        Another dog grasped the sleeve of a girl and tried to pull her into the house.
·        Goats were reported to be ‘jumping around.’
·        Chickens were cackling in the dark and scrambling about.
·        A cat ran into the side of a garage, stunning itself.

The sighting:
In the evening, after dark, five young people saw a round object maneuvering over Santa Maria Valley. [Checking a topographic map, Ramona, where the witnesses were located, is in the Santa Maria Valley. The valley is described by the local Iron Mountain Conservancy as gentle lush grasslands surrounded by low-laying hills—jw]

After maneuvering over the valley, the object landed on a hillside, gradually turned ruby red, then intensely white. A compass needle alternated erratically from north to northeast in one-second intervals while the object was on the hillside. Then the object hovered above the ground, and streaked toward the witnesses. As the object flew overhead, the animals reacted as described above, the TV had blue spots and vertical bands, the radio would not work, and the compass needle lodged itself against the glass cover.

A further description of the object was that it was ruby red with a blue halo around it as it flew overhead. The sound of the object was described as ‘a mix between a hum an a fog-horn.’ [The distance of the landing site from the witnesses is not estimated. Exactly when the sound was heard is unclear—throughout the sighting or only when the object flew overhead?—jw]

After the object flew over, aircraft the witnesses thought to be Navy jets followed.

Both EM effects and sound were reported. No physiological effects or traces were reported.

Gribble, Bob, 1989, Looking Back, MUFON UFO Journal, no. 258, October 1989, page 24 [Copied below]:

FIFTEEN YEARS AGO – October 1974: Jeannie, Beth, Linda and Tony Overfelt, and Pat Nelson, all of Ramona, California, had a frightening experience on the evening of the 15th as they watched a mysterious object maneuver over Santa Maria Valley. The object landed on a hillside, gradually turned ruby red, then intensely white, hovered a short time over the ground then streaked toward Country Estates. The object was perfectly round. According to the five young people, when the object flew overhead the horses began excitedly whinnying and bucking; one kicked off a fence rail. A dog grasped one of the girls by the sleeve and tried to pull her into the house.  The other dog, which was chained, ran in and out of the doghouse, often smashing into the back of the doghouse with great force.

The goats were ‘jumping around,’ and the chickens were scrambling and cackling in the dark. The cat ran with great force into the side of the garage, stunning itself. No radio or TV station would work, the TV had blue spots and vertical bands. Tony’s compass alternated erratically from north to northeast in one-second periods when the object was on the hillside, but when it flew overhead the compass needle lodged itself against the glass cover. After the object flew over, some airplanes followed, which the young people believed to be Navy jets. The object appeared to be ruby red with a blue halo around it, when moving rapidly at high elevation. Its sound was described as ‘a mix between a hum and a fog-horn.’
