Fran Ridge:

Another interesting radar ‘Unidentified’ is the case of a UFO tracked by a Massachusetts Institute of Technology radar observer while in the process of conducting a weather radar project (under a contract with the U.S. Signal Corps). An extract from his letter to Major Tuttle, Staff Weather Officer, 33rd Fighter Wing, Otis Air [Force] Base, Massachusetts, explains the situation and is provided in the report synopsis by Dr. J. Allen Hynek.

Brad Sparks:

Sept. 21, 1950; Provincetown, Mass. (BBU 809)

9:53-9:55 a.m. (EST). MIT research associate and Air National Guard Maj. Myron Herbert Ligda and Joseph V. Connelly (plus another witness) tracked on SCR-615B radar an unidentified object heading N, during MIT Weather Radar Research Group tracking of USAF flight of 2 Otis AFB F-84 jet fighters which were heading 333 degrees straight and level course at about 400 mph (IAS 250 knots) positioned at range 45 miles 105 degrees azimuth initially, at 9:50 a.m. Object detected at 9:53 a.m. on a nearly intersecting straight line course heading about 358 degrees [at about 500 mph?], F-84 pilots were warned by VHF-1 radio but could not see object due to poor visibility haze when ground radar showed object crossed about 3 miles [actually plotted about 1-1.5 miles ahead and blips ‘nearly merged’ in front of jets at 9:54:00 a.m. Object speed about 1,500 mph as it made a sharp right turn and loop of about 270 degrees about 15 g's centripetal acceleration back to the W. UFO News Article:
“CZ B-26’s B-17 Chase Two Flying Saucers”

21 December 1952

(The Panama American, Panama)

Source: ufonewspaper.blogspot.com

The whole article:

“It didn’t get into the papers, but the Panama Canal Zone was completely mystified by two flying saucers which flew over the area for five hours and 36 minutes Nov. 25 [1952].

The Air Force actually sent up two B-26’s, one B-17, and one Navy patrol bomber to try to intercept the flying objects, but failed.

An official cable to Washington from the Panama Canal Zone states that ‘two unidentified objects’ were sighted over the Canal Zone Nov. 25 from 6:06 p.m. to 11:42 p.m.

The sighting was made by radar attached to anti-aircraft guns.

The two flying saucers, or whatever they were, remained over the Canal Zone for 5 ½ hours, traveling at an estimated speed of 275 mph and maneuvering from 1,000 ft. to 28,000 ft. in altitude.

Since no U.S. aircraft were supposed to be flying in the vicinity at that time, the air defense commander was sufficiently stirred up over the mysterious sighting to send three Air Force bombers and one Navy patrol bomber up to intercept the flying saucers.

However, they were unable to catch the elusive objects, which made absolutely no sound.”
