UFO News Article:
“Saucers Questioned -
Private Research Group Disputes Answers”,
14 February 1962 (Reading Eagle, Pennsylvania)

NICAP challenged the U.S. Air Force’s verdict that ‘there’s no such thing as a flying saucer,’ according to this article:,5214146

Quote from the article:
“The letter said two of NICAP’s Directors – Vice Adm. R. H. Hillenkoetter (Ret.), former head of the Central Intelligence Agency, and President J. B. Hartranft of the Aircraft Owners and Pilots Assn. – were willing to meet with Air Force officials and ‘submit for evaluation factual evidence that UFOs are real and under intelligent control.’ ”

The late Roscoe Henry Hillenkoetter was a U.S. Navy Vice Admiral, the third director of the post-WWII U.S. Central Intelligence Group (CIG), and the first director of the Central Intelligence Agency created by the National Security Act of 1947.

Lawsuit against the CIA in 1978

“The Ground Saucer Watch (GSW) Freedom of Information Lawsuit Documents”:

UFO news article:
14 January 1979 (The New York Times)

Article on the U.S. UFO group Ground Saucer Watch’s Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) lawsuit against the Central Intelligence Agency in 1978:

Quote from the article:
“Documents obtained in a lawsuit against the Central Intelligence Agency show that the agency is secretly involved in the surveillance of unidentified flying objects and has been since 1949, an Arizona based U.F.O. group said yesterday.

Mr. Spaulding an aerospace engineer with Airesearch, one of the largest producers of aerospace components, said the documents show the United States embassies are used to help gather information on U.F.O. sightings and that the information "seems to be directed to the C.I.A., the White House and the National Security Agency."

A C.I.A. memo of Aug. 1, 1952, recommends continued agency surveillance of "flying saucers," saying, "it is strongly urged, however, that no indication of C.I.A. interest or concern reach the press or public, in view of their probably alarmist tendencies to accept such interest as 'confirmatory' of the soundness of 'unpublished facts' in the hands of the U.S. government," the document said.

Among the documents are several detailed reports of Air Force attempts to either intercept or destroy U.F.O.'s.” presents the whole news article:

A short excerpt of the article can also be found on the New York Times website:

I also reported on the above article on 16 September 2009.

22 October 1973 (The Argus-Press, Owosso, Michigan)

Two Detroit police officers and a train crew about 50 miles (80
kilometres) away from Detroit reported seeing a UFO (separate
UFO sightings) on the early morning of 21 October 1973,
according to the article:,4465632

Quote from the article:
“Thomas Manke, 20, of Owosso described what he saw as ‘like a giant spotlight’ about 400 feet above the train.

Conductor Dennis McKanich peered at the lights from the rear of the train but ‘the lights were so bright he couldn’t look at it,’ Manke said.

He said, after hovering for a while, the object headed northeast at a high rate of speed.

The policemen, Prestion McBride and Charles Lain, told their commanding officer they saw ‘two white flashing lights at first and then a third bright light followed by a flashing red light.’

They said the object they saw sped towards the southwest.”
