“Delphos, Kansas
November 2, 1971”

The whole UFO case report:
“Animal Reaction Feature:
Snowball was a farm dog, an outdoors living dog who assisted in rounding up and herding sheep.  Sheep were also involved in this incident, and the event took place during the time their lambs were being born.

Joan Woodward, Animal Reaction Specialist:
It was after dark on a clear night when Ron Johnson heard the rumbling noise and stepped out to see a brilliant object near the ground. There was a mass of unchanging colors over the object—blue, red, and orange.  The actual surface could not be seen, and the shape was difficult to discern, but the top had a flat-dome shape and it had a flat bottom. At one point Ron compared it to ‘ toad stool.’  Ron estimated it to be 8 feet in diameter. A bright glow with a shimmering appearance extended from the base to the ground. The glow from the object illuminated nearby trees and the ground.

Physical traces were found on the ground where the object hovered. Touching the traces caused numbness. No EM effects were reported.

UFO Case Report (E-mail):
“Subject: Groveton MO, February 9, 1968”

By Joan Woodward, 26 November 2005
(NICAP.org)

Quote from the UFO case report:
“Animal Reaction Feature:
In the early morning darkness, the witness heard cows in a pasture in front of his house bawling as if frightened. He looked out a window and saw a large circular object hovering 20 to 25 feet above the ground and 300 to 350 feet from the house.  The glow associated with the object was bright enough that the witness could see furniture in the house, could see limbs on trees, and the fence between the pasture and house. The glow also allowed him to see the cattle that were in a rough semicircle about 100 to 200 feet from the object. Some cows with calves were bawling and being answered by calves. Then one cow whirled and ran toward the barn, followed within seconds by all the others. Throughout the sighting there was a distinct swishing sound (like a piece of wire whirled at high speed) with a pulsating rhythm.

The Sighting:
This sighting is included on the list of Blue Book ‘Unknowns (#12235).’  The time of the sighting was reported as 4:30 am by Skylook (1970) and as 3:20 am by Hynek (1977). The witness resides on a farm. He is nearsighted (but can drive without glasses) and viewed these events without glasses. Hynek felt he was a stable, factual witness. His house sits ¼ mile from a road and the pasture is between the house and the road.

After being alerted as described above and seeing the cattle run toward the barn, the witness focused on the object. He saw a circular object estimated as 100 feet in diameter with at least one concave side from which came yellow-green light. The witness saw 7 openings in the center of the concave side. Without glasses he was not sure if the openings were round or square, but estimated them to be 2 to 2.5 feet in diameter.

The duration of the sighting was estimated with uncertainty, but was probably greater than 1 minute and less than 5 minutes. The object departed by rapidly rising at a 45 degree angle but maintained the horizontal position the craft held during hovering.  On departure, the swishing sound became 2-3 times louder and the pulsations became more rapid.

U.S. Government UFO Document:
“PROJECT 10073 RECORD (CARD):
DATE – TIME GROUP: 9 Feb. 68/
LOCATION: Groveton, Missouri”

(Project Blue Book, U.S. Air Force, Washington, D.C.)

Source: Fold3.com, Lindon, Utah

Quote from the document:
“The observer was awakened by several of his cows bawling. The observer rushed to his living room and sighted a craft that was estimated to be about 100 ft. in diameter and had concave sides. A bright yellow-green light came from the concave sides of the craft and the craft itself produced a pulsating sound similar to a piece of wire whirled at high speed above a person’s head. During this time the cows were staring at the object which the observer estimated to be about 100 to 200 ft away and about 25 ft. above the ground. Finally the cows whirled and ran into the barn. Shortly afterward the craft moved away rapidly toward the SW. When the object moved toward the SW the noise was reportedly two or three times louder and the sound pulsations were more rapid. The duration of the sighting was 1 to 5 minutes. NOTE: The observer is somewhat nearsighted but was not wearing his glasses during the observation.”

Project Blue Book listed the case as “UNIDENTIFIED.”

The UFO incident occurred at 4:20 a.m. (9:20 a.m. Zulu Time Zone).

UFO News Article:
“Many Report ‘Flying Saucers’ ”

19 February 1953
(The Horry County News and The Loris Sentinel, South Carolina)

The article reports on a 13-14 February 1953 Horry County, South Carolina, UFO flap that involved two possible animal mutilation incidents (cow/horse) and animal reactions (dogs/horse):

Farmer Arthur Marlowe (of Route 4, Loris) observed a UFO on
14 February 1953, at 00:30 a.m.

14 hours later Marlowe found out that he had lost a cow on the spot over which the UFO had hovered. The cow’s legs were folded up underneath her and there was no sign of a struggle. The cow’s nose was pushed slightly into the dirt and pieces of the rye from the pasture were in her mouth, Marlowe said.

According to Marlowe, Leon Hardee, who lived one-half miles south of him, had lost a horse two days earlier with no signs of a struggle and with grass in its mouth.

Quote from the article:
“In Loris and elsewhere in the county and adjoining counties numerous people during the last week have reported sighting unfamiliar lighted objects passing throught he sky.

Marlowe, who lives two miles south of Highway 9 on the old Whiteville-Conway road, stated that he was awakened at approximately 30 minutes after midnight on Saturday morning, February 14th, by the barking of his dogs and the braying of his horse.

After throwing on his clothes, he looked out of a window and saw so much light that he thought his barn was on fire. When he got outside he discovered that the light was coming from an object about 70 feet above the ground and about 100 yards beyond his barn.

He was able to make out three cylindrical beams of light coming from the object, one from what appeared to him to be the front, another from the side facing him and the third from the rear of the object. The light was so bright, he said, that he could have read fine print where he was standing approximately 100 yards from it.

Although he had his gun with him and three times started to shoot the object, he decided not to in hopes that the object might settle to the ground.

The object was about as long as a boxcar and was oval shaped, Marlowe said. He was unable to see any markings of any kind on it. He did hear a noise coming from it which sounded like an electric motor under load.

After he had watched the object for approximately 25 minutes, it began to move gradually to the west getting higher as it moved away. Marlowe said that the noise coming from it became louder as it began to move.

While Marlowe’s experience is the most spectacular report, others have seen mysterious lights passing through the sky. The Lacy Hardees, the Roscoe Wilsons, the Levi Shelleys, and Miss Emmadell Prince, all of whom live in the newly developed area of Loris behind Prince’s Esso Station, report that between nine and 9:15 Friday night, February 13th, they saw some mysterious object.

They first noticed the object travelling from the south of Loris. They watched it move over Loris and on to the north. Then it turned around and passed back towards the south.

All they could see was a light, shining steadily, about the size of a fist, Roscoe Wilson said. When the object turned, the light became larger, but returned to its former size after it straightened up.

The Wilsons and Hardees said thet the object turned not to the right or left but turned up when it changed course to the north of Loris.

After the object got too close to the horizon to be seen the Lacy Hardees rode to the junction of Highway 701 and the street that goes down by H. Clay Hughes Store and Brick Warehouse and watched the object for about 25 minutes.

At this time the object which part of the time appeared about the size of star seemed to circle down until it reached a certain height. Then it rapidly darted up and to one side, and then began circling down again. It kept up this motion all the time they watched it.

They left their vantage point twice to find the Loris police. After they returned the second time they discovered that the object had disappeared.

Earlier the same evening Bob Benton, station agent for the Atlantic Coast Line at Loris, sighted a strangely lighted object in the sky at Nixon’s Crossroads on Highway 9 as he was driving to his home at Cherry Grove Beach.

The object came from over the water and seemed to curve to the south of the land. ‘It was just a big ball of white light on a level course,’ Mr. Benton said.

When he got to Cherry Grove Beach N. F. Nixon, Sally Rogers, and a Cox man told him that they had also seen the object.

Mark Garner of Myrtle Beach, co-owner of this paper, states that he saw a lighted object pass through the skies the same night at at 6:20 P.M.

A similar object was reported seen a number of times the same night in Marion County.”

UFO case report:
“Subject: Close Encounter With Hexagon at Corydon, IN,
April 1987”

31 October 1987
(NICAP.org)

Francis Ridge reports on a UFO incident that occurred at a corn and soybean field two miles east of Corydon, Indiana, alongside S.R. 62 in late April 1987.

Ridge also presents a 10 June 1987 Corydon Democrat news article that reported on the UFO case.

The whole Corydon Democrat article:
“Paul Hauswald, 14, was working in a field about 10:30 PM four weeks ago, when he suddenly realized, ‘I could see where I was going with no trouble. I could see the spreader and everything.’

He looked up to see lights——blue, white and orange—— hovering above his tractor. The lights followed him up and down the last couple of rows as he spread manure on a corn and soybean field two miles east of Corydon alongside S.R. 62. He didn’t stop to stare or turn off the tractor. ‘I just wanted to get done and get out of there.’

‘Yeah, I was scared. Then, just... whoosh and it was gone.’

He drove the tractor back to his father’s barn, a trip that took less than 5-minutes, and began the task of refilling the spreader, about 15-rninutes later, while still in the barn, he saw a saucer-shaped object with different colored lights fly over the silo.

‘It was all white on the bottom. It had five sides and was bigger than a house. It hovered at about 1,000 feet.’ ”

According to Jim Delehanty’s UFO sighting report, Paul Hauswald’s 11-year-old brother, Chris, also witnessed the UFO incident. In his report, Delehanty writes that the UFO appeared to be flying at an altitude of  100 feet (as opposed to 1,000 feet as the Corydon Democrat reported).

“PROJECT 10073 RECORD (CARD):
DATE – TIME GROUP: 19 June 1968/
LOCATION: Rocky, Oklahoma”

(Project Blue Book, U.S. Air Force, Washington, D.C.)

Source: Fold3.com, Lindon, Utah

Quote from the document (Page 1):
“An illuminated ‘object,’ glowing and very bright in the center, with a great many white lights bordering the glow, approached the witnesses from the southeast, descending at a 45 deg. angle. The ‘craft’ or lights were rotating in a counterclockwise direction. Object made noise at first like helicopter – then silent when close by. The two boys were frightened and took refuge in the hay barn after two or three minutes. They claim positively that it was not an aircraft or balloon. Dogs barked, presumably at object. Based on evidence given, and unless boys’ evidence is very largely discounted, cause of sighting is not known. No aircraft in vicinity.”

The case is listed as “UNIDENTIFIED.”

Newsletter Quote:
“STIGMATA”

Number Six, Spring-Summer 1979
(Project Stigma, Paris, Texas)

Source: Archives For the Unexplained (AFU.se), Norrköping, Sweden

Project Stigma was run by the late animal mutilation researcher Thomas (Tom) R. Adams.

Quote from the newsletter issue:
“HELICOPTERS – A SPECIAL REPORT

Project Stigma is currently preparing a special report to consist largely of a catalog of reports ot unidentified helicopters at or near mutilation sites. We have knowledge of over 200 such sightings and we are seeking data regarding those which have yet to be reported. For those who have doubted the likelihood of a link between ‘mystery choppers’ and the ‘mystery choppings’, the report will serve to convincingly illuminate the connection. We would appreciate hearing whether our readers would prefer an 8½″  X 11″ report (or an 8½ X 11 STIGMATA?) rather than the current 8½″ X 7″ size. Watch for an announcement regarding the helicopter report and catalog in the upcoming STIGMATA #7.

A CLOSER LOOK

1977 - October

Washington - Snohomish county: We are indebted to Jacob Davidson of Seattle for providing us with a series of consistently fine reports by investigator Jerry Phillips of Everett, Washington. Phillips interviewed rancher and horseman Jack Henning regarding the mutilation of one of his colts.

A vet, Dr. John Carr, was called to the scene and he declared that the colt died from loss of blood via some unknown procedure. There was no blood on the ground and only a small amount in the heart and chest cavity. There were no tracks or signs in the 3-inch grass in the area. It looked ‘as though the colt had been dropped out of the air’. In the same field, 30 to 40 feet of electric fence was down, with two fence posts snapped off at the base. There were no tracks around the fence. Henning left the carcass in the field so he could keep an eye on it. Then, (quoting from Phillips’ report): On the second day a cobweb-like material developed over the open wound. Later the second day a large German shepherd dog was observed coming into the field. When he spotted the dead animal he stopped, smelled the air, made a circle around it and continued on its way. The third day, a coyote which had been seen in the area several times in previous months, came into the field, circled the animal several times, then began eating on the head and neck. He would not go near the rear of the horse. Mr. Henning went out to have a look and found plenty of evidence on the ground and in the grass to show where the coyote had dug his paws in when pulling at the neck hide.....Mr. Henning brought the mare and her other colt out and tried to get them near the dead colt. Neither one would come within 50 feet of it. He tried laying hay next to it and they still would not approach it. Mr. Henning has two labrador dogs…..he turned them loose to see what they would do. They circled the animal, but would not get within 20 feet of it.

Henning told Phillips that he had been working with the surviving colt before the killing and she was fairly gentle. After the mutilation she stood in the barn and quivered. Henning had difficulty even approaching her for a week. The mare was very possessive and protective of her colts, and she would become very upset if anyone even walked between them. There was no evidence that she tried to interfere when the victim colt was in danger that morning. Afterward, ‘she acted as if the colt had never existed’.

1978 – April through August

Missouri – Lincoln County: By now we assume that most readers of this publication are aware of the reports of livestock mutilations, UFO and unidentified helicopter sightings, anomalous odors (and even a June encounter with a 4-ft.-tall ‘ape’) – all in Lincoln County (with some ‘spillover’ into adjoining counties), and especially around the community of Elsberry.

These events received a relatively substantial amount of nationwide publicity. We wanted to refer interested readers to a couple of published accounts regarding these incidents:

International UFO Reporter (1609 Sherman Ave., Suite 207; Evanston, Illinois 60201 – $12.00 per year). This publication and its editors (Dr. J. Allen Hynek and Allen Rendry) are allied with the Center for UFO Studies (CUFOS). The August 1978 issue of the IUR features an account of a UFO sighting in the Elsberry area (p. 3) and a separate article on the UFO and mutilation activity there throughout the summer. The latter article labors to downplay both the UFO activity and the mutilations, not to mention any possible ‘link’ between them. We have been aware of CUFOS’ grimly opaque attitude toward the mutilation phenomenon. A CUFOS staff member once advised one of their many volunteer investigators scattered across the country not to ‘bring cattle mutilations into the picture’. The staffer claims, in his letter to the investigator, that ‘this is a personal opinion’, then insolently directs the investigator to ‘be careful not to relate UFOs with mutilations, when you are speaking as a Center representative, before you have consulted the Center about its opinion in this matter’. We have become weary (and wary) of attempts to refute the validity of classic mutilations (and some of the peripheral phenomena often associated with them) by referring to bits of information excised from the total body of data (of course, we recognize the possibility that CUFOS may simply be the victim of bad information and/or indifferent investigation). The UFO/mutilation link remains valid circumstantially. Beyond that, it cannot be proven or disproven. Meanwhile, we heartily recommend objectivity between and among mature and consenting adults.

Pursuit (R.F.D. 5 – Gales Ferry, CT 06335 – subscription/membership for one year is $10.00; Pursuit is the journal of the Society for the Investigation of the Unexplained). ‘Mutilations: The Elsberry Enigma’ by editors R. Martin Wolf and Steven N. Mayne appears in the Winter 1979 edition. This is more like it: a simple recounting of the evidence, anecdotal and otherwise, gathered by the authors during their investigation in the Elsberry area. And where conclusions are not warranted, they are not drawn. The article includes a chronological listing of extramundane events (beginning with a mutilation in 1975) and details on diverse Fortean occurrences. The interesting thing is, Project Stigma has since become aware of many other unusual events in the Lincoln County area which are not recounted in the Pursuit article, thanks primarily to the investigations of David Perkins, Cari Seawell and Bill McIntyre. There is more to be heard, and read, regarding the Lincoln County happenings.

1978 - December

South Carolina - Orangeburg County: Around 8:00 PM on Wednesday, December 6th, farmer Richard Fanning, accompanied by his wife and another couple, drove out to feed Fanning’s several hundred hogs. As they approached the bog pen, all four saw a circle of light along with four smaller lights (two red, two green) hovering over nearby treetops. The four were frightened by the noiseless apparitions and decided that the hogs could be fed later. As the witnesses drove from the scene, they were followed by the large white light and the red and green lights for about 300 yards. Suddenly ail five lights returned to hover over the area of the hog pen. After three or four minutes, all of the lights went out.

Fanning did not return to feed the hogs until Friday morning, December 8th. Be found one hog ‘standing up dead. I kicked him and he fell over’. Fanning told reporter Roberta G. Boman of the Times and Democrat (Orangeburg, SC) that a second dead hog lay nearby with its jawbone removed. He told Boman that ‘the body was sort of like sponge, with all the weight gone, kind of like jelly (Fanning said the hog, normally weighing 200 lbs., weighed no more than approximately 50 pounds). In my opinion, no animal got that hog.’

Fanning went on to exclaim that ‘I was scared, and I'm not scared of many things. I go hunting and fishing a lot. Never seen anything like it. It’s the weirdest thing I’ve ever seen in my life. I’m an outdoorsman, and I wouldn’t have said nothing unless the other three people saw it too.’ (Our thanks to Leonard Stringfield for advising us of the Fanning case.)

MUTES IN THE MEDIA

*** Sandler International Films of Hollywood, California has been gathering new material to be used in updating ‘UFOs Past, Present and Future’, a documentary film which was originally released in the mid-1970’s. The Sandler crew has filmed interviews in Colorado and New Mexico as part of a segment on animal mutilations to be included in the new film. It is understood at this writing that the film is to be distributed via syndication to television stations across the country, beginning in the fall of 1979. The ‘on-camera spokesman’ or narrator for the new film is Dr. Jacques Vallee, author of the controversial new book, Messengers of Deception (see STIGMATA #7).

*** At press time, ABC-TV News has, for several weeks, been filming an investigative report on animal mutilations, to be aired (possibly in two parts) on the ‘20-20’ news-feature program in the early summer (‘20-20’ will apparently be seen weekly on Thursday nights during the summer). Project Stigma investigators conferred with correspondent Dave Marash and his crew in early May, and we were impressed with their sincerity and in-depth approach. Assuming the story is aired, watch for impressive eye-witness accounts of UFOs and mystery helicopters in mutilation-prone areas.”
