Robert Powell & SCU:

November 14th of 2004; Off coast of Southern California

The U.S. Navy’s Carrier Strike Group Eleven (CSG 11), including the USS Nimitz nuclear aircraft carrier and the USS Princeton missile cruiser, were conducting a training exercise off the coast of southern California when the Navy’s radar systems detected as many as 20 anomalous aerial vehicles (AAV). These AAVs were deemed a safety hazard to an upcoming air exercise and the Captain of the USS Princeton ordered an interception with two F/A-18F Navy jets. This paper examines the publicly available subset of these data: Eyewitness information from the pilots and radar operators; Freedom of Information Act releases of four navy documents; and a Defense Intelligence Agency released video taken by an F/A-18F jet using an AN/ASQ-228 Advanced Targeting Forward Looking Infrared (ATFLIR). Analytical calculations based on radar notes, testimony from the pilots, and the ATFLIR video are used to derive the velocity, acceleration and estimated power demonstrated by the AAV maneuvers. Calculated AAV accelerations ranged from 40 g-forces to hundreds of g- forces and estimated power based on a weight of one ton ranged from one to nine gigawatts. None of the navy witnesses reported having ever previously seen military or civilian vehicles with these maneuvering abilities. Manned aircraft such as the F-22 and F-35 are limited to nine g-forces and the F-35 has maintained structural integrity up to 13.5 g-forces. Our results suggest that given the available information the AAV’s capabilities are beyond any known technology. The public release of all navy records associated with this incident to enable a full, scientific and open investigation is strongly recommended.

Fran Ridge:

Two F-18 Hornets alerted to UFO in Pacific that had been dogging the USS Princeton for two weeks. F-18’s tried to intercept and object dove from 80,000 feet to 20,000' and hovered over ocean and either dropped out of radar range or shot straight back up. The radio operator on the USS Princeton instructed Commander Fravor and Commander Slaight to investigate. The two fighter planes headed toward the objects. The Princeton alerted them as they closed in, but when they arrived at ‘merge plot’ with the object, so close that the Princeton could not tell which were the objects and which were the fighter jets, neither Commander Fravor nor Commander Slaight could see anything at first. There was nothing on their radars. Then, Commander Fravor looked down to the sea. It was calm that day, but the waves were breaking over something that was just below the surface. Whatever it was, it was big enough to cause the sea to churn. Hovering 50 feet above the churn was an aircraft of some kind, whitish, that was around 40 feet long and oval in shape. The craft was jumping around erratically, staying over the wave disturbance but not moving in any specific direction, Commander Fravor said. The disturbance looked like frothy waves and foam, as if the water were boiling. Commander Fravor began a circular descent to get a closer look, but as he got nearer the object began ascending toward him. It was almost as if it were coming to meet him halfway, he said. Commander Fravor abandoned his slow circular descent and headed straight for the object. But then the object peeled away. ‘It accelerated like nothing I’ve ever seen,’ he said in the interview. He was, he said, ‘pretty weirded out.’ The two fighter jets then conferred with the operations officer on the Princeton and were told to head to a rendezvous point 60 miles away, called the cap point, in aviation parlance. They were en route and closing in when the Princeton radioed again. Radar had again picked up the strange aircraft. ‘Sir, you won’t believe it,’ the radio operator said, ‘but that thing is at your cap point.’ ‘We were at least 40 miles away, and in less than a minute this thing was already at our cap point,’ Commander Fravor, who has since retired from the Navy, said in the interview. By the time the two fighter jets arrived at the rendezvous point, the object had disappeared. The fighter jets returned to the Nimitz.  (CBS News, New York Times, Washington Post)”

UFO Report:
“The 1989 UFO Chronology”

Created: 15 August 2008
Updated: 19 December 2013
(NICAP.org)

Quote from the UFO report:
“This is currently a 14-page chronology of UFO incidents and events for 1989. Our thanks for these chronologies must go to Richard Hall (the original 1989 chronology from UFOE II), Dan Wilson (archive researcher), and Jean Waskiewicz (online NICAP DBase [NSID]. You will note the many foreign reports that we are now being able to access. Our special thanks to Dan Wilson for getting those to us. As more come in, this page will be updated. Previous chronologies (1947 to 1969) involved the expertise of two other team members; Rebecca Wise (Project Blue Book Archive) and Brad Sparks (Comprehensive Catalog of Project Blue Book Unknowns). Bob Gribble’s entries are those filed with the National UFO Reporting Center in Seattle, Washington, now operated by Peter Davenport. Trace cases are now being entered with the help of Ted Phillips, Center for Physical Trace Research and retrofitted into previous chronologies as time permits. Since I was Indiana State Director (MUFON) at that time, many of our Indiana cases are listed here.

Of possible interest, the MADAR Project (which I headed for 20 years) had 5 anomalistic EM readings which are listed chronologically here.

June 4, 1989; Palmdale, CA
7:45 PM. A security guard and an air traffic controller at Air Force Facility 42 in Palmdale, California witnessed a silver flying object and three orb-shaped UFOs during testing of the B1-B bomber. There was also a rumor of an abduction occurring on this date at the same facility. (Source: MUFON UFO Journal, November 1990).

June 11, 1989; near St. John’s, Newfoundland
7:00 AM. A Canadian Airlines International crew watched a dark grey or black ovoid object, estimated to be about 2 meters in length, make complex maneuvers in the sky not far from St. John’s, Newfoundland for three minutes. (Source: Chris Rutkowski, International UFO Reporter, July 1990, p. 10).

July 22, 1989; Trenton, ME
3:30 PM. Over Blue Hill Bay -- At 3:30 p.m. Randy Rhodes, a police dispatcher for the City of Ellsworth, and Bill Reiff, an attorney, took off in a Beechcraft Bonanza from the Bar Harbor-Trenton airport. At around 3:45 p.m. they spotted a huge metallic disc, shining like polished aluminum, at the 9 o'clock position. It was at the same altitude as their plane--approximately 5100-5200 feet. The object suddenly moved dead ahead to the 12 o'clock position and it took on a reddish or rose color. Not very enthusiastic about continuing on with this thing in front of them, they turned back for the Bar Harbor-Trenton airport. The Aerial Direction Finder was working at the time but the DME (Distance Measuring Equipment) was not receiving. It had never before given them a problem, and 3-4 minutes after the object disappeared the DME came back on. When they landed they discovered that there had been power surges and outages on the ground, and they recalled that when they last observed the object it was headed in the direction of the Maine Yankee Nuclear Power plant in Wiscasset. However, a spokesman for the Bangor HydroElectric Company later reported that three limbs falling over a transmission line when a resident cut down a tree caused the outage. July 28, 1989; Kapustin Yar, Astrakhan, Russia
11:20 PM. A domed disc-shaped object was seen over a high security rocket weapons depot in Kapustin Yar, Astrakhan, Russia, by four military witnesses, including the two main witnesses named Voloshin and Tishchayev. The UFO glowed a phosphorescent green. It circled the depot three times, accelerated and then stopped abruptly. It shot away when a Soviet fighter jet appeared. UFO Report (Cases) (E-mail):
”Subject: Shearon Harris Nuclear Power Plant/
Triangle UFO reports nearby”

By Daniel Wilson, 2 September 2004
(NICAP.org)

Quote from the e-mail:
“HERE IS ANOTHER CASE OF A TROUBLED NUCLEAR POWER PLANT AND TRIANGLE-SHAPED UFOS BEING REPORTED NEARBY.”

My comment:
In this e-mail, Daniel Wilson presents seven NUFORC UFO case reports. The North Carolina UFO incidents occurred on 23 June 1998, 12 August 1999, 22 November 2000, 1 January 2002, 2 August 2002, 21 November 2002, 10 July 2003.

He also presents a news article (“Problems mount at Shearon Harris”) that reports on the 2003 Shearon Harris Nuclear Plant emergency shutdowns.

The Shearon Harris Nuclear Power Plant is located in New Hill, North Carolina.

Wikipedia article: “Shearon Harris Nuclear Power Plant”:

Quote from the Wikipedia article:
“The Shearon Harris Nuclear Power Plant is a nuclear power plant with a single Westinghouse designed pressurized-water nuclear reactor operated by Duke Energy. It was named in honor of W. Shearon Harris, former president of Carolina Power & Light (predecessor of Progress Energy Inc.).[2] Located in New Hill, North Carolina, in the United States, about 20 miles (30 km) southwest of Raleigh, it generates 900 MWe, has a 523-foot (160 m) natural draft cooling tower, and uses Harris Lake for cooling. The reactor achieved criticality in January 1987 and began providing power commercially on May 2 of that year.

The Shearon Harris site was originally designed for four reactors, but cost and weakening demand despite a growing population resulted in three of the reactors being canceled. The final cost approached $3.9B, including safety upgrades mandated after the Three Mile Island accident.

On November 16, 2006, the operator applied to the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) for a renewal and extension of the plant's operating license.[3] The NRC granted the renewal on December 17, 2008, extending the license from forty years to sixty.[4]”

April 22, 1998; various cities, WA
UFOs sighted at sub base and nuclear storage facility.

Sept. 20, 1998: Henfield, Sussex, England
2:15 AM Two uniformed police officers, one male and one female were on patrol in the Henfield area on the main A281 Brighton Road when they saw several unusual lights in the sky. Each light was the size of a Jumbo jet aircraft. For scale a large aircraft flew near to the lights. Each light was circular and not connected to the others. They stopped their vehicle to get a better look. As they watched they suddenly saw a beam of light being shone down to the ground approximately 200-300 metres away. It was a rural location with no housing nearby. They drove toward the beam but it suddenly went out. Both the officers were shook up by the incident that lasted in the region of 35-45 minutes. The sighting was officially reported to the MoD. (Source: The 5TH ANNUAL PRUFOS POLICE REPORT 2006, by Detective Constable 1877 Heseltine, British Transport Police)

Sept. 25, 1998; Blackstone, Sussex, UK
Night. Two constables see 5 lights in sky while driving patrol. They get out to watch. Lights are apparently large [one size of jumbo jet]. They contort together in motion like a snake. Moved very fast. Then a bright beam appeared on road ahead. Beam did not seem diminished by misty conditions. Very piercing. Constables shown headlights on it and it disappeared. Inspecting the area they found nothing. UFO investigator Larry Dean quoted. (Lead from Mike Swords, Source: West Sussex County Times, Horsham, UK, Oct.2, 1998)

Nov. 1998; Nr. Benbrook, TX
[no day stated] 5:00 AM. A deputy sheriff was driving to work when he noticed a glowing, pulsing light to his right. He could also see beams, like lasers, shot upwards. A news program on his radio was asking if anyone near Benbrook could confirm lights reported in to them. He called them [all his calls were difficult to get through] and said he was in the vicinity. He mentioned that he'd also seen a small plane apparently flying towards the area and the radio man said that this was their spotter plane. Then the entire electrical system of his car cut out, and he rolled to a stop. [engine out too, obviously]. Even his cell-phone would not work, even though it was only on battery power having nothing to do with the car. He himself felt as though an ‘energy’ had hit him on the top of his head and run right down his body. ‘It felt like someone had poured warm oil over my head’. The feeling left in three minutes. The car was immediately restartable. His radio had lost all its programming. His cell-phone came back on and worked once he unlocked the code. He thought about telling his officer colleagues but decided against it. (Lead from Mike Swords, Source: R. Joseph L. [name left semi-anonymous]. About.com Paranormal.1999)”

Benbrook is a suburb of Fort Worth, Texas.

April 1984; Stanmore, Middlesex, England
PC Richard Milthorp was one of at least 20 uniformed officers who observed a dome shaped circular UFO that appeared to ‘fire’ balls of light to the ground for two hours. He submitted a report with one other officer that was sent to the Ministry of Defence and the Civil Aviation Authority. The Superintendent for Harrow Police station at the time said that the report by MILTHORP and PC PAUL ISLES was made by ‘two normal sensible men.’ UFO Classification NL (Nocturnal Light) On Duty sighting. 20 Officers. 7:10 PM. Radar visual confirmation. A 1000 foot long cigar-shaped object followed a KC-135 USAF tanker aircraft through a U-turn over the mountains of Chimayo, New Mexico while separate nocturnal lights cavorted about in the sky. Radar blips were tracked at the time. (Source: MUFON UFO Journal, November 1984).

May 5, 1984; Over Indian Ocean & in Space
At 1400 hours GMT a ultra-sensitive orbiting US DSP (Defense Support Program) spy satellite detected the entry of an unknown object that passes 15 miles in front of it, and then flew below it over the Indian Ocean. An alert was triggered at the North America Air Defense Command. Object moving at 22,000 miles per hour, changed course, and flew back out into outer space. (Source: Michael D. Hall, UFOs: A Century of Sightings, p. 324).

June 14, 1984; Indian Point Nuclear Power Plant, NY
10:30 PM. Guards at the Indian Point nuclear power plant on the Hudson River, New York sighted a dark disc-shaped object with lights, 30 feet in diameter, that stayed over the nuclear reactor for 15 minutes. It finally flew away toward the northeast. (Source: J. Allen Hynek & Philip Imbrogno, Night Siege, p. 143).
