UFO News Article:
“UFO Over Colusa? – Bill Pecha’s Story”

13 September 1976
(Colusa Sun-Herald, California)

Sources: U.F.O. Newsclipping Service, Seattle, Washington and AFU.se

The whole article (Pages 1 and 2):
“ ‘It was a nightmarish experience I’ll never forget. I didn’t believe in UFOs before, but I do now. You’d have to see it to believe it, but so help me what I saw and felt about 1 A.M. Friday
(10 September 1976) outside our house is the truth.’

That’s what Bill Pecha, Jr., who does machine and bankout wagon work in his shop at 1650 Wilson Avenue, Colusa, told the Sun-Herald in describing what happened after the power went off (the power outage lasted for about nine minutes) while he was watching a Channel 12 television program. His wife and two children were asleep at the time. Said Pecha:

‘When the power went off I started outside and saw this huge glowing thing hovering over our house. It looked to me like it was 150 feet across and from 10 to 18 feet in height shooting out beams of bluish light. It looked like a huge inverted cup and saucer with the outer brim spinning clockwise and an inner disc spinning counter clockwise. When I got outside I felt funny. Seemed like all the hair on my body was being pulled up.

‘There were three of these things, the big one and two smaller ones on the high power line in back of the ‘Slim’ Davis house. There was no noise, no sounds of any kind just a huge blue halo of light with the big UFO maneuvering about at amazing speed. I awakened my wife and she and my son and daughter saw the whole thing, too. So did Les and Gayle Arant (they reside at 846 Thirteenth Street) because I awakened them as I drove into town to report the UFO sighting to the sheriff’s office. At that time this ‘thing’ was heading toward the fairgrounds and disappeared in a southeasterly direction, like toward Sacramento.

Pecha said the Arants drove into town, too, as a report was made to the sheriff's office which apparently had received other reports from Colusa area residents who had seen the strange glowing object.

Pecha said he was so frightened that  he drove into town as fast as he could in his pickup with the lights out. But, he said, the bluish light from this thing, about 50 feet off the ground, seemingly followed him, then disappeared. He further described the events which transpired thusly:

‘Slim Davis and his wife were asleep. There was a bluish light all over their place, and coming down these shafts of light turned to an all-white color. This thing darted about, clear out to the foothills and back. On each side it had two things about eight feet long which hung down and curled around underneath it. They looked like wire bristles. The power line poles were glowing and the two smaller UFOs each had lights.

‘All of this happened, I guess, in a matter of 15 or 20 minutes. A call was placed to Phenomena Research, the UFO reporting center in Seattle, Washington, and the man in charge asked if this thing I saw had three lights, or windows, and I said it did. My report was that it seemed to have long flexible cables by which it looked like it was being maneuvered.’

Pecha, who said he and his family didn’t get much sleep after the early Friday morning incident, told his story to a number of Colusans and has received numerous telephone calls. ‘I  guess some believe me and some don’t,’ he said. ‘But I know what I and others saw. It made a UFO believer out of me, that’s for sure.’

Pechas said two officers from the sheriff’s department came out to talk with him further about what he saw. It is also understood that a man from the UFO reporting center in Seattle is coming here to talk with Pecha about the incident and also to have him make a drawing of the object.

Pacific Gas & Electric Company officials who were contacted about the incident said there may have been some relation between it and the fact that about the time the power outage occurred shortly before 1 A.M. Friday, the PG&E substation at Victorville went out, causing a high voltage power line overload.

The nine-minute power outage affected thousands of Northern California homes.

It was suggested that the power overload caused static electricity being conducted into the ground and this might have accounted for the weird, glowing UFO witnessed and experienced by Pecha and others.

But Pecha doesn’t buy this theory. ‘It was big, it was real, it was terrifying shafts of light seemingly come at you, hovering over barns and houses, darting away, coming back, moving upward, then shooting back down close to the ground. I wasn’t a believer in UFOs before, but I certainly am now. I don’t ever want to go through anything like this again.’ ”

The article contains Bill Pecha’s drawing of the UFO.

I also reported about this UFO case on 3 November 2013.

UFO Report:
“The 1995 UFO Chronology”

Released: 15 February 2008
Updated: 16 March 2017
(NICAP.org)

Quote from the UFO report:
“This is currently a 9-page chronology of UFO incidents and events for 1995. Our thanks for these chronologies must go to Richard Hall (the original 1995 chronology from UFOE II), Dan Wilson (archive researcher), and Jean Waskiewicz (online NICAP DBase [NSID]. You will note the many foreign reports that we are now being able to access. Our special thanks to Dan Wilson for getting those to us. As more come in, this page will be updated. Previous chronologies (1947 to 1969) involved the expertise of two other team members; Rebecca Wise (Project Blue Book Archive) and Brad Sparks (Comprehensive Catalog of Project Blue Book Unknowns). Bob Gribble’s entries are those filed with the National UFO Reporting Center in Seattle, Washington, now operated by Peter Davenport. Trace cases are now being entered with the help of Ted Phillips, Center for Physical Trace Research and retrofitted into previous chronologies as time permits. Since I was Indiana State Director (MUFON) at that time, some of our Indiana cases are listed here.

Several VERY good UFO reports (May 25, Bovina, TX has audio transmissions) in this group, and the GAO (General Accounting Office) report on the Air Force Roswell investigation was released in July.

UFO News Article:
“ ‘Tamal’-Type UFO Blamed for Blackout”

3 April 1992
(The Tico Times, Costa Rica)

Sources: U.F.O. Newsclipping Service, Plumerville, Arkansas and AFU.se

The whole article (Page 13):
“An unidentified flying object (UFO) using what officials describe as a ‘tractor beam’ sapped electrical energy from the Arenal hydroelectric plant early Thursday morning [2 April 1992], causing a nationwide blackout that lasted half an hour, officials said.
‘It was the most incredible thing I ever saw,’ said Arenal plant manager Ingenuo Tomapelo. ‘The thing just hovered there for several minutes shining this tractor beam down onto the main generator.’
Tomapelo said he witnessed the event from the window of the plant’s control room where he watched helplessly as the gauges registered dropping energy output.
‘It looked like a tamal, just like the kind my grandmother used to make, except that it glowed,’ said Tomapelo. ‘They drained all our power in a matter of minutes.’

NATIONAL Emergency Commission President Jorge Trejos said the commission received reports of UFO sightings from the Guanacaste provincial capital of Liberia to the small town of La Fortuna at the foot of the Arenal volcano.
From these reports the Emergency Commission approximated the route of the UFO. It was first reported spotted over Liberia around 12:15 a.m., spotted over Canas at 12:16 and made its appearance at the Arenal plant only two minutes later.
After several minutes of hovering over the plant, it sent down its tractor beam at 12:21. Three minutes later, the lights went out all over the country and the UFO immediately abandoned the Arenal plant.

AT about 12:30, Ernesto de la Verdad, manager of the El Volcan restaurant in La Fortuna, reported seeing the UFO hover briefly over Arenal Volcano before disappearing inside the crater.
‘We were watching the volcano with some tourists, and all of a sudden we see this glowing object over the crater,’ de la Verdad told The Tico Times. ‘At first we thought it had something to do with an eruption, but then we saw we could make out its shape. It looked like a tamal, exactly like my grandmother used to make, except that it glowed.’
One alert tourist, April Fuller, from Oshkosh, Wisconsin took a picture of the alien craft.

MINISTER of Public Security Luis Fishman ordered Civil Guardsmen to the top of the volcano to investigate the strange occurrence and enlisted the assistance of tour operator Gabino Hidalgo, who offers a controversial crater tour that many believe to be dangerous (TT, March 20).
President Rafael Angel Calderon told reporters that he had no knowledge of the UFO, but welcomed any positive contributions the aliens could make to the country.”

My comment: The newspaper presents April Fuller’s UFO photograph (shows a self-luminous (disk shaped?) object).

Lake Arenal was tripled in size with the construction of the Arenal dam in 1979, which exists at the eastern end of the lake. “The 1977 UFO Chronology”

Created: 15 August 2007
Updated: 4 March 2018

Quote from the UFO report:
“This is currently a 24-page chronology of UFO incidents and events for 1977. Our thanks for these chronologies must go to our documentation team: Richard Hall (the original 1977 chronology from UFOE II), William Wise (Project Blue Book Archive), Dan Wilson (archive researcher), Brad Sparks (Comprehensive Catalog of Project Blue Book Unknowns), and Jean Waskiewicz (online NICAP DBase [NSID]). This is the year that the MADAR Project got its real test. Go to July 10th and listen to the datatape recording! There were seven detections of magnetic anomalies by the Multiple Anomaly Detection and Automated Recording system at my Mt. Vernon, Indiana facility, within a six week period! There were UFO sightings within 60 miles NW and 85 miles SW at the same time MADAR was triggered.

Finally, in November, I was invited by the press to view the motion picture ‘Close Encounters of the Third Kind’ before it was officially released.

Memo from CIA Director Walter Bedell Smith to Director, Psychological Strategy Board, declassified 20 April 1977 (Good, Above Top Secret, 511)

May 1977; France. Groupe d'Etude des Phenomenes Aerospatiaux Non-Identifies (GEPAN) organized under the auspices of the French national space agency for the study of UFOs.

July 1, 1977; Aviano, Italy
3:00 AM. Electronic alarms suddenly sounded at the NATO base and then home to the 40th Tactical Group. Something had set off the magnetic and motion detectors in the high hurricane type fence protecting the Victor Alert compound, a facility that housed fighter aircraft, their crews, maintenance and support personnel. Simultaneously a power outage occurred at the Victor Alert facility, and though a back-up system immediately kicked in, minor power fluxes went on for the next 15 to 20 minutes. Soon security personnel were reporting a strange light display off to the northwest, off base, perhaps 200 meters beyond the fence line, over a soybean field. Luminous round object with dome hovered above a NATO base security zone, spinning; changed color, emitted sound like swarm of bees (NICAP UFOE II, NICAP UFOE II, Section II).

July 21, 1977; Porter, TX
4:15 AM. Officer John W. Bruner, a deputy sheriff, was on duty and was the first person to observe the phenomenon. Officer Bruner and his partner Officer Coogler were parked west of the object which appeared to be approximately 1/2 to 1 mile away. Bruner and Coogler got out of their vehicle and tried to observe the object better by shinning their light on it. The object moved toward the men and the officers turned off the light because they became nervous at seeing the object's response to their light. The object then moved back to its first location. The two officers concurred that the object appeared to have six portholes surrounding a type of framework. The two officers observed the UFO for approximately 45 minutes. During that time period, the UFO appeared to stand still in mid air, pulsated, traveled at incredible speeds and flew with erratic mobility. The officers described the UFO's apparent size to be about that of a grapefruit. Officer Bruner is convinced That the object he saw was not a balloon or a helicopter. (Reference: UFO INVESTIGATOR, October 1977, page 4)

Aug. 28, 1977; Windermere, Cumbria, England
12:10 AM An on duty police officer PC IAN MACKENZIE observed two very bright horizontal lights in the vicinity of Langdale Pike that moved towards him and grew brighter. He ruled out any type of aircraft. At the same time PS JOHN McMULLEN also spotted the UFO from his location whilst walking through Keswick with three other officers. He described the object as being hang glider or diamond shaped. At 0020 hours PS JAMES TROHEAR and PC JOHN FISWICK also reported seeing the object from their position at the Fallbarrow Park Caravan Site on the shores of Lake Windermere. Other unnamed officers were also present at that location and saw the object. PS TROHEAR described the object as triangular or diamond shaped. At 0022 hours PC ALEXANDER INGLIS was driving home with three colleagues along the A591Keswick to Bothel road when they too caught sight of the lights. As the object approached them he pulled the car over to have a better look. Despite their efforts they could not make out a distinct shape of the object. All they could make out was two extremely bright lights attached to it and there was a faint purring noise associated with it. At 0025 hours PC JOSEPH MAW and a colleague spotted the object heading in the direction of Buttermere. It was traveling at a low altitude over the surrounding fells. At around the same time PC DAVID WILD spotted the UFO whilst out on foot patrol on the A592 Rayrigg Road to Bowness. He described it as kite shaped and that it was a very large structured craft. At 0030 hours a number of civilian witnesses also spotted the object. At the same time following a police radio request for officer sightings, two further officers, PS GEOFFREY MERCKEL and PC RONALD JONES observed the same UFO from their position at Skelwith Bridge on the A593 road. They described the object as being kite shaped as they watched it go out to sea over Morcambe Bay. Multiple police witness corroboration reported from several geographical locations. On and Off Duty sighting. 17 Officers (nine named plus a number of unspecified officers). Source - A Covert Agenda by Nick Redfern. Pocket Books 1998. Pages 131-132. July 22, 1989; Trenton, ME
3:30 PM. Over Blue Hill Bay -- At 3:30 p.m. Randy Rhodes, a police dispatcher for the City of Ellsworth, and Bill Reiff, an attorney, took off in a Beechcraft Bonanza from the Bar Harbor-Trenton airport. At around 3:45 p.m. they spotted a huge metallic disc, shining like polished aluminum, at the 9 o'clock position. It was at the same altitude as their plane--approximately 5100-5200 feet. The object suddenly moved dead ahead to the 12 o'clock position and it took on a reddish or rose color. Not very enthusiastic about continuing on with this thing in front of them, they turned back for the Bar Harbor-Trenton airport. The Aerial Direction Finder was working at the time but the DME (Distance Measuring Equipment) was not receiving. It had never before given them a problem, and 3-4 minutes after the object disappeared the DME came back on. When they landed they discovered that there had been power surges and outages on the ground, and they recalled that when they last observed the object it was headed in the direction of the Maine Yankee Nuclear Power plant in Wiscasset. However, a spokesman for the Bangor HydroElectric Company later reported that three limbs falling over a transmission line when a resident cut down a tree caused the outage.
