UFO News Article:
“Unusual Object in Sky”

28 January 1954
(Quorn Mercury, Australia)

Source: Trove, National Library of Australia, Canberra, ACT, Australia

The whole article:
“Three well known residents this week reported having sighted what they described as an ‘unusual object’ in the north-eastern sky at approx 9.30 p.m. last Sunday (24 January 1954).

The object was said to be shaped like a diamond and gave off a powerful light resembling that of a search light. The queer light was reported to have darted around the sky for several minutes before it eventually faded away.

The three men, who prefer to remain anonymous, are most emphatic that the object they sighted was not a star or other normal heavenly body. The incident co-incides with previous reports of unexplained objects sighted in the far northern sky during the past few years.

A full report of the incident, together with the men’s names and addresses will be forwarded to the newly formed Flying Saucer Investigation committee in Adelaide.

The men who witnessed the unusual event have expressed the opinion that the object sighted could not have been an aircraft, owing to the terrific speed at which it travelled.”

UFO News Article:
“Pilot Reports Strange Object In Air”

2 January 1954
(The Sydney Morning Herald, Australia)

The whole article:
“An A.N.A. pilot, Captain D. Barker, to-day reported seeing about 10.15 a.m. a ‘metallic mushroom-shaped object’ flying low over the Yarra Valley, towards Templestowe, about 10 miles from Melbourne.

The regional civil aviation director, Mr. A. R. McComb, said in Melbourne to-night: ‘We give serious consideration to all reports of this nature and our instructions are to forward them to our head office where they are studied.’

Airline officials said that a Convair airliner had been over the Yarra Valley about 10.15 (2 January 1954), but Captain Barker said he had ‘never seen anything less like a Convair.’

He stated: ‘First of all, it was travelling about 700 miles an hour, well below the minimum altitude for the safety of normal aircraft.’

‘It was also very big, about four times the size of a DC4. I see Convairs every day, but this resembled no aircraft I know.’

Captain Barker said he saw the object flying at 2,000ft from his home in East Doncaster, an outer Melbourne suburb.”

UFO Report:
“1954 UFO Chronology and the Great Wave of 1954”

(NICAP.org)

Quote from the web page:
“Created January 29, 2006; updated 21 April 2016
This is a 19-page report on an on-going project involving a number of people. With the help of Rebecca Wise (Project Blue Book Archive), and Dan Wilson (digging out the cases from my checklist), the task becomes much easier. But without Brad Sparks’ updated list, the Comprehensive Catalog of Project Blue Book Unknowns, the entire project would have been impossible. And our thanks also go to Jean Waskiewicz who created the online NICAP DBase (NSID) that helped make it possible to link from the cases to the reports themselves.

This was the year of the Walesville crash, the BOAC case, the Sea Fury incident, and the famous Bermuda radar case, and many others. A significant number of unusual sightings occurred in Europe during what has become known as the ‘Great Wave of 1954.’ Much of this wave has already been documented in UFO literature, but what was not known until the release of the CIA files is the fact that the CIA collected many of the sightings through normal intelligence channels, something which they had supposedly fought to block with the Robertson Panel inquiry. (Clear Intent, 132) Examples of reports excerpted from official CIA information sheets are provided below in their chronological sequence. The CIA reports are mostly translated press clippings, newspaper and dates should have been included but were not available.

What may not be known is that the Anomalies Foundation: The Year 1954 in Photos (fotocat report #1) lists and documents 101 photographs in its 23-page report for that year alone. And just added to this chrono is The World-Wide Wave of 1954 by Don Johnson.

UFO News Article:
“The R.A.A.F. Investigates Flying Saucers”

9 January 1954
(The West Australian, Perth, Australia)

The whole article:
“The R.A.A.F. today made its first official statement on flying saucers and revealed that it had been investigating saucer reports since 1947.

A spokesman said that in the past few years hundreds of reports had been received and all were treated confidentially.

Each report is investigated by a R.A.A.F. intelligence officer and 24 questions put to the person making the report are tabulated in a two-page ‘report of aerial object observed’ form.

The reports are not published to prevent people from making faked sightings and so that a true and accurate check can be made on similar observations.

Meanwhile, Melbourne’s spate of flying saucer reports continued today when two more were reported.

One man said he saw a shining circular object about 30 ft. in diameter giving out a red vapour as it passed over Malvern, a Melbourne suburb.

A woman late today said she saw what she thought at first was a large yellow star.

The ‘saucer’ stayed low in the sky and in the same position for some time.”

http://trove.nla.gov.au/newspaper/article/49610401

This issue of The West Australian contains another UFO article:
“ ‘Pinkish Light’ Observed At Bayswater”

The whole article:
“Four people sitting on the lawn of a Bayswater house about 11 o'clock last night saw what they think may have been a ‘flying saucer.’

At first they thought the object—‘a pinkish light moving quite fast’—was a falling star.

However, when it hovered for a few seconds and zig-zagged a little, they discounted this theory.

The object then faded out towards the sea in the Scarborough area after a few minutes.

As there was no noise, and the object was overhead at one time, the four people decided that it could not have been an aircraft.”

U.S. Government Journal UFO Article:
“UNIDENTIFIED FLYING OBJECTS (UFOs)”

The Inspector General (TIG) Brief, Number 21, Volume XVIII,
14 October 1966
(U.S. Air Force, Washington, D.C.)

Source: CUFON.org

The whole article:
“Base commanders, and their information and operations personnel, should review AFR 80-17, 19 September 1966, to assure familiarity with their responsibilities in the event they receive an inquiry concerning UFOs, or a notice of sighting. Air Force interest in UFOs is two-fold: to determine if the UFO is a possible threat to the United States and to use the scientific or technical data gained from study of UFO reports. To attain these objectives, it is necessary to explain or identify the factor that caused the observation to be reported as an unidentified flying object – i.e., any aerial phenomenon or object which is unknown or appears out of the ordinary to the observer.

Successful identification of UFOs requires prompt, accurate reporting and rapid evaluation of data. Any AF base which receives notice of a sighting in its vicinity must be ready to conduct an immediate investigation. Personnel who may receive the initial call, whether in operations or other base organizations, should be familiar with the local procedures established for carrying out the base’s responsibilities to screen, evaluate and report the information. Selection of the individual to serve as UFO investigating officer is a key item in implementing these responsibilities. The commander should consider carefully the scientific and technical backgrounds and previous investigating experience of all available personnel, base his choice on qualifications for gathering and evaluating the data required by AFR 80-17. Prompt on-the-spot surveys and follow-ups by the base investigator are vital for complete case information. His report must be immediate, detailed, accurate, and objective. He must make every effort to obtain pertinent data, test all leads, clues, and hypotheses, so that he will have the best possible basis for his analysis and comments in the concluding paragraph of the report.

All personnel who may have contact with the public concerning UFO matters should be made aware of the importance of proper responses, particularly in connection with sightings which are difficult to identify. They must not only comply with the instructions in AFR 80-17 for referral of inquiries to the office which is qualified to handle them, but must refrain from any action or comment which could cause misunderstanding, either as to the UFO program or a particular case.

The number of UFO sightings reported to the Air Force during FY 1966 was the largest of any year to date, surpassing the previous record number received in 1954. This statistic constitutes another reason why all bases should assure they have the necessary investigative capability and procedural instructions for responding to UFO notices and inquiries. (Briefing of AFR 80-17 is on page 15.)”

“What Our Air Force Found Out About UFOs.”

By Captain Edward J. Ruppelt, USAFR, 1954
(True (magazine), New York City, New York)

Edward J. Ruppelt was director of Project Blue Book from March 1952 until late 1953. Before that, he was director of Project Grudge from late 1951 until it became Project Blue Book in March 1952.

Project Blue Book ran until January 1970.

Ruppelt achieved the rank of Captain in the U.S. Air Force.

“CBS REPORTS: UFO FRIEND, FOE OR FANTASY
WITH WALTER CRONKITE”

The Black Vault article: “Robertson Panel”:

http://www.theblackvault.com/wiki/index.php/Robertson_Panel

The Black Vault article: “Robertson Panel (part):
The Robertson Panel was a committee commissioned by the Central Intelligence Agency in 1952 in responses to widespread Unidentified Flying Object reports, especially in the Washington, D.C. area.

The Robertson Panel first met formally on January 14, 1953 under the direction of Howard Percy Robertson. He was a physicist, a CIA employee and director of the Defense Department Weapons Evaluation Group.

Other panel members were respected scientists and military personnel who had worked on other classified military projects or studies. All were then skeptical of UFO reports, though to varying degrees: Thornton Page, astrophysicist, deputy director of Johns Hopkins' Operations Research Office (was one of seven committee members).

The committee suggested the Air Force should begin a "debunking" effort to reduce "public gullibility" and demystify UFO reports. The panel suggested a public relations campaign, using psychiatrists, astronomers and assorted celebrities to significantly reduce public interest in UFO's. It was also recommended that the mass media be used for the debunking, including influential media giants like Walt Disney Corporation.

Many ufologists argue that the Robertson Panel recommendations were put into effect and the resulting official debunkery relegated the subject matter permanently to the fringe, both in the mainstream media and scientific communities. Also after the Robertson Panel, Project Blue Book was reduced in status and stripped of most of duties of investigating serious UFO cases, which were instead secretly turned over to a newly-formed division of the Air Defense Command. Directives were also issued not to discuss the unexplainable cases with the public and to reduce the percentage of unknowns to a minimum.

Though the CIA's official history suggests that the Robertson Panel's conclusions were never carried out, there is evidence that contradicts this. Perhaps the most unambiguous evidence for the Robertson Panel's covert impact on news media reporting about UFOs is a personal letter by Dr. Thornton Page, discovered in the Smithsonian archives by sociologist Michael D. Swords. The 1966 letter, addressed to former Robertson Panel Secretary Frederick C. Durant, confides that Page "helped organize the CBS TV show around the Robertson Panel conclusions." Page was no doubt referring to the CBS Reports TV broadcast of the same year, "UFOs: Friend, Foe or Fantasy?" narrated by Walter Cronkite. (Incidentally, this program was criticized for inaccurate and misleading presentations). Page's letter indicates that the Robertson Panel was still putting a negative spin on UFO news at least 13 years after the panel met.”

My comment:
In the above article we find clear evidence for the fact that Dr. Thornton Page helped organize the CBS UFO documentary, which was narrated by Walter Cronkite.

The CBS UFO TV news report regarding the 1973 U.S. UFO wave, which I posted an article about on 31 May 2009, makes a whole lot more sense after knowing that the CBS legend Walter Cronkite and CIA committee member Dr. Thornton Page collaborated on a UFO debunking documentary in 1966.

And what’s the picture today? Who knows?! One thing is for certain – I’ve never ever seen a U.S. TV news channel present a self obtained declassified U.S. government FOIA UFO document. Furthermore, I haven’t seen a single TV news channel in Europe present a ditto UFO document either. Why don’t TV news channels want to present previously top secret UFO facts, which have been collected by their own government?

Civilian UFO researchers, both in the U.S. and Europe, have after all unearthed thousands of previously classified government UFO documents during the last three decades.

Criticism of the Robertson Panel’s conclusions

A number of criticisms have been leveled at the Robertson panel. In particular that the panel’s study of the phenomena was relatively perfunctory and its conclusions largely predetermined by the earlier CIA review of the UFO situation.[15][20][21][22]”

UFO Article (Blog):
“UFO Cover Up – The Early Days”

By Kevin D. Randle, 20 June 2011
(A Different Perspective, Cedar Rapids, Iowa)

Quote from the article:
“The other day I was on a radio show and the host asked if there was a cover up. I said, ‘Yes,’ and that I could prove it.

In my search of UFO files, at the National Archives, at the Center for UFO Studies, and using the Project Blue Book files, I learned how some of this transpired. The following will provide a glimpse into the convoluted trail that leads into the cover up.

The military, after the code name Project Sign, the first of the official UFO investigations was compromised, claimed that the UFO investigation had been closed. They had merely changed the name and kept going under the code name of Grudge. Then, in December 1949, they announced that Project Grudge had been ended. The study hadn’t ended, but continued, still using the code name Grudge. Later that name was changed and Blue Book was born.

While it can be argued, persuasively, that military secrets are a necessity, and since Blue Book was well known by the beginning of 1953, the policy makes sense. But it can also be argued that the policy is an outgrowth of a desire to mislead the public about the reality of the situation. The question that can be asked, and frequently was, ‘How can anyone suspect the Air Force takes UFOs seriously if the investigation consists of an officer, an NCO, an enlisted man or two and a secretary?’ The answer is, of course, not very.

But, of course, that wasn’t the true picture. Investigation was continuing at a very high level with the addition of the 4602d’s intelligence teams. More information comes from the unit history (originally classified as Secret) and dated from 1 January - 30 June 1955. ‘The 4602d Air Intelligence Service Squadron continues to conduct all field investigations within the zone of the interior to determine the identity of any Unidentified Flying Objects.’ The unit history also noted, ‘The responsibility for UFOB investigation was placed on the Air Defense Command, with the publication of AFR 200-2, dated 12 August 1954.’

This merely confirms what we had suspected before. There was a secret study of UFOs conducted by the Air Force that was not part of the Blue Book System. Clearly ATIC was involved because regulations demanded it, but there is nothing to suggest that every report forwarded to ATIC made its way down to Blue Book.”

Quote from the Wikipedia article:
“Charleston Air Force Base (IATA: CHS, ICAO: KCHS, FAA LID: CHS) is a United States military facility located in the City of North Charleston, South Carolina. The facility is under the jurisdiction of the United States Air Force’s 628th Air Base Wing (628 ABW), a subordinate element of the Air Mobility Command (AMC).[2] It is part of Joint Base Charleston, which combined Charleston Air Force Base with Naval Support Activity Charleston.”

History

On 16 February 1954, Air Defense Command established the 444th Fighter-Interceptor Squadron as a tenant unit on Charleston flying F-86D Sabre fighter aircraft as the east coast’s air defense against airborne invaders. Soon after, the base achieved permanent status and with that declaration MATS began various facility construction projects to further improve upon the base’s status. Meanwhile, the 1608th received its first C-121C Constellation appropriately named ‘City of Charleston’ on 16 September 1955 (tail number 54-153). Shortly thereafter the base was designated as an aerial port of embarkation, giving Charleston AFB more prominent role in MATS. Tactical Air Command and the 456th left Charleston on 16 October 1955, which also ended the base’s association with the C-119 Flying Boxcars.”
