Wikipedia article: “Charleston Air Force Base”:

Quote from the Wikipedia article:
“Charleston Air Force Base (IATA: CHS, ICAO: KCHS, FAA LID: CHS) is a United States military facility located in the City of North Charleston, South Carolina. The facility is under the jurisdiction of the United States Air Force’s 628th Air Base Wing (628 ABW), a subordinate element of the Air Mobility Command (AMC).[2] It is part of Joint Base Charleston, which combined Charleston Air Force Base with Naval Support Activity Charleston.”

History

On 16 February 1954, Air Defense Command established the 444th Fighter-Interceptor Squadron as a tenant unit on Charleston flying F-86D Sabre fighter aircraft as the east coast’s air defense against airborne invaders. Soon after, the base achieved permanent status and with that declaration MATS began various facility construction projects to further improve upon the base’s status. Meanwhile, the 1608th received its first C-121C Constellation appropriately named ‘City of Charleston’ on 16 September 1955 (tail number 54-153). Shortly thereafter the base was designated as an aerial port of embarkation, giving Charleston AFB more prominent role in MATS. Tactical Air Command and the 456th left Charleston on 16 October 1955, which also ended the base’s association with the C-119 Flying Boxcars.”

UFO Case Report (E-mail):
“Subject: RB-36H Encounter Over Dakotas”

By Jan L. Aldrich and Francis L. Ridge, 30 July 2009
(NICAP.org)

The whole UFO case report:
“Late, 1956                      M/GR
Border between South and North Dakota, USA
noon
(45°57N/ 103°36 W)

In the latter part of 1956, First lieutenant Lyod was a navigator on a RB-36H belonging to the 718th Squadron out of Ellsworth AFB near Rapid City, South Dakota. The RB-36H was cruising above the border between North and South Dakota in straight and level flight at about 435 mph and at 40,000 ft. Suddenly the left scanner in the aft compartment saw a metallic disc about one hundred feet across. He called on the intercom to tell the rest of crew that there was an object flying toward the airplane from its left-hand side and and took up a fixed position off the left wing less than 300 ft away. The object had a dome on top, like an observation dome, that had some portholes around it and it was circular in shape, approximately 100 ft in diameter. It flew just a few hundred yards off the aircraft wingtip in formation with it. Several crew members took 35 mm photographs using their standart-issue cameras. A radar site on ground confirmed that there was an object flying in formation with the RB-36H. (from Dr Richard F. Haines article ‘RB-36H Navigator describes UFO encounter in late 1956’ and Colonel Llyod’s testimony)

Interesting comments by Colonel Llyod:

This RB-36H was able to do every form of reconnaissance. It carried a huge amount of photographic equipment on board: gang camera, oblique cameras, and radar cameras on the radar sets. It had also countermeasuring equipment. The bomb bay compartment had been reconfigured to be a pressurized compartment with very big cameras (the films was probably 12 inches wide - enable to photograph the whole continent of Africa in one pass). All crew members were issued, under Operation Blue Book, received Haine cameras, binoculars and a special reporting form from USAF Project Blue Book. The crew had also a discrete frequency that they could report these sightings. When they got on the ground, the crew members had to turn in all their logs, equipment, photographs, and everything to an intelligence unit called ‘Reci-Tech’ (for Reconnaissance Technology) which was a central processing unit for the whole wing, they were debriefed by intelligence officer, reminded that they all held top-secret clearances, and that they couldn’t reveal any of this information for a period of 12-years. Then, several weeks later, they were debriefed again by some officers from higher headquarters who reminded them also of the same 12-year period. When Colonel Llyod was discharged back in 1960 from the active Air Force into the actives, he was also reminded again of the 12-year period to not reveal any of this information.

In late 1952, six 5th Strategic Reconnaissance Wing RB-36Ds were deployed to the 91st Strategic Reconnaissance Group. This was the first RB-36 used in the Korean theater. While not employed in combat, these RB-36s conducted high-altitude aerial reconnaissance over Chinese Manchuria and Soviet East Asia

UFO News Article:
“ ‘Low And Big,’ Says Policeman”

19 November 1956
(Aberdeen Daily News, South Dakota)

Source: ufonewspaper.blogspot.com

The whole article:
“ ‘THE PRETTIEST sight we ever saw’ was one man’s description
of the mysterious ball of light seen west of Aberdeen early Sunday
(18 November 1956) morning by an Aberdeen farmer and three police officers.

Keith Lowary, who lives 1½ miles south of Aberdeen on U.S. 281, first spotted the red ball. After watching it for a while, he called the police station to see if it had any report on the unusual object.

When the call came about 1:50 a.m.; Desk Sgt. Stephen Oakes radioed the two police cars, which drove out to a spot on Melgaard Road and U.S. 281 to watch. In the cars were Capt. Irvin Albrecht, and Officers Walter Hartman and Orville Hanson.

Officer Hartman explained, ‘We watched for a while. It was the prettiest sight we ever saw.

‘We could pick out the object real quick. It was pretty darn low and looked pretty big,’ he continued.

The mysterious light wasn’t a round ball; it was shaped more like a football, Hartman explained. ‘It was a beautiful kind of red, then changed to orange, green and a real bright color.

‘It looked like someone was clicking switches,’ he commented.

1,000 FEET HIGH

The object, which was estimated by Hartman to be about 1,000 feet high, hovered in the sky, maneuvering westward and then coming back. The officers watched until it disappeared in the west, which was estimated to be 10-15 minutes.

The light was not obscured by clouds. Officer Hartman reported it was very easy to tell it wasn’t a star or an airplane as are usually seen. He also said the object maneuvered too easily and and too fast to be a balloon.

‘I wish we had gotten a shot at it,’  H a r t m a n  commented. ‘Maybe it would have come down or shot back or done something.’

The Aberdeen police department, through the state police radio, notified the Ellsworth Air Force Base at Rapid City. A patrol unit at Redfield reported seeing a strange light five or 10 miles west of Redfield at the same time.

The CAA was called but by the time the observer was ready with the binoculars, the object had disappeared, according to police reports.

The CAA observer who was called by Sgt. Coleman checked with binoculars and said he felt it was a star, the officer said.

Calls also were received by the CAA later in the morning (5:24 and 5:44 a.m.) about another bright light over the city.

The observer who watched with binoculars from the roof of the administration building at the Municipal Airport was unable to cite anything unusual, the log entries stated.

PLANET BRIGHT

The planet, Venus, was particularly bright Sunday morning, he did note.

A Mobridge police officer Saturday night told of seeing ‘a fireball, whitish in color, and jagged, not perfectly round,’ one night earlier in the week. He thought it was Tuesday night but made no entry on the police blotter so isn’t certain.

Another patrolman reported seeing a strange ‘craft’ a couple of nights later in the McLaughlin area. He described it as ‘cone shaped and all red.’ This object was ‘traveling fast’ he reported.

The strange objects, whatever they are, also have been reported in western Minnesota, in western North Dakota, and in the Rapid City area in the past week.

Two Faulkton men saw a strange object in the sky near Redfield last Tuesday (13 November 1956) night.”
