UFO News Article:
“Valley contributed to ’73 UFO reports”
5 April 2008
(The Express-Times, Easton , Pennsylvania )
Sources: UFO Newsclipping Service, Bainbridge Island ,
The whole article (Page 7):
“SIGHTINGS AROUND WORLD. Bushkill Twp. police officer
reported three lighted objects in the sky.
The year 1973 was a remarkable year for sightings of unidentified
flying objects. There were sightings in Europe, South America, Southeast Asia
and in the United States .
Sightings were especially concentrated in Midwestern states such as Ohio , Indiana and Illinois .
In March and April there was a flurry of UFO reports
in Pennsylvania ,
including some in our region. On March 1 residents of the Saylors
Lake area of Monroe County
reported 42 objects with flashing lights in the sky. The objects were seen by
many witnesses over a three-hour period. A dozen witnesses, including a Pennsylvania state trooper, saw the UFOs passing over Saylors Lake . Before the evening was over one
witness counted 39. A
state trooper said he personally observed four objects pass over the lake from
west to east. The trooper described the UFO as ‘like a Christmas tree flying in
the air.’ He estimated the objects were about 1,500 feet in the air.
Most had white lights but others had lights that appeared to be blue and red.
Another witness, Mrs. Howard Pfeiffer, reported she
and 11 others observed about 40 UFOs, some in groups, pass over the lake at
intervals between 7:05 and 10:45 p.m. She described the UFOs as being circular
and about the size of a child’s wading pool.
‘The first one came so close I felt I could reach up
and touch it,’ Pfeiffer said. ‘There was no noise, no sparks, or anything. I
know it wasn’t any plane or balloon or helicopter.’
Later in March 1973 a number of sightings were observed over Bushkill Township . Most appeared to be oval or
round lighted objects. A Bushkill
Township police officer
reported seeing three objects. Numerous sightings were reported in the area of
Hoffman’s Grove, a popular picnic site in the northern part of the township.
Another rash of sightings occurred on March 15 at Milton , Pa. ,
where police were swamped with telephone calls about a giant ball which moved
across the sky from east to west. The UFO, which moved rapidly, resembled a
lighted helicopter dome, according to one witness. At one point the witness
said he saw the ball make a 90 degree turn to avoid a passing airplane.
Throughout the evening other residents reported seeing the strange object.
Later a spokesman at a nearby Air Force base, when asked about the sightings,
responded that none of the reports were recorded and that Air Force personnel
were not on alert for such incidences.
The bizarre sightings also occurred in the month of
April. On the evening of April 24 three adults at Spring Mills, Pa. , observed an
oval-shaped fluorescent white object traveling from the north. At one point the
UFO stopped and hovered over a house. It then sped off to the north and
disappeared. The UFO gave off an intense white light which also turned to green
and blue. A local police officer who interviewed the witnesses reported all
three were sober adults not under the influence of either drugs or alcohol.
On April 29, more than a dozen residents of the Ferndale section of Shamokin ,
Pa. , observed a UFO with flashing lights
actually land on nearby Burnside
Mountain . One witness, a
13-year-old boy, observed the UFO through binoculars. The boy said he could see
a large bubble shape on top of the object and a silver colored substance along
with the lights. Several witnesses said the UFO appeared to hover over the
mountain for several minutes before it landed. About 11 p.m. the UFO rose up
into the sky and beaded in a westerly direction.
Experts were at a loss to explain the rash of
sightings of 1973. Some postulated unusual weather phenomena that year, sun
spots, and even covert operations of our military as possible explanations.
Project Blue Book, the Air Force’s official inquiry
into UFOs, commenced in 1952.
In 1969, Blue Book was terminated after the conclusion
that there was nothing extraordinary about UFOs and the vast majority of the
sightings, though not all, could be explained by natural phenomena.”

UFO Case Directory (IMCAT):
“Skylab III Photo Incident
September 20, 1973
In Orbit, Over SW Indian Ocean”
(NICAP.org)
The whole UFO case report:
“Fran Ridge:
Sept. 20, 1973; In orbit over Indian
Ocean
During revolution # 1863. Astronauts Alan Bean, Owen
Garriott and Jack Lousma spotted what they described as a red ‘satellite’,
which they photographed (4 color photos) and mentioned during a subsequent
debriefing. We have radio conversation (transcript only) with Houston CapCom
about 4.5 hours after the sighting of this object. There was no man-made
satellite that could explain this sighting and hence the object was truly
anomalous. This case is multiply-listed as a Cat 8 (photo), Cat 11 (sighting
from air/spacecraft), and flagged as a NASA incident. 10 mins. Distance from
Skylab was 25-30 miles .
Estimated diameter was 800
feet .
Joel Carpenter:
One of the things that’s so darn fascinating about
this case is something that Dr Maccabee and Brad Sparks bring up in the article
on Maccabee’s site. One interpretation of the sighting is that the object was
approaching on an orbit in a 51 or 52 degree inclination and about to intersect
with Skylab’s 50 degree (but much higher) orbit. They mention that that
inclination was used by the Soviets. But actually, they often used 65 degrees.
51 degrees was used for certain very specific flights: the Salyut space
stations and the manned Soyuz ships that docked with them. At the time of the
sighting, Salyut-1 and Salyut-2 had been flown, and both had failed. Salyut-2
was launched in April 1973 and was actually the top secret Almaz military
station, the counterpart of the US MOL reconnaissance space station. Salyut-2
had recon gear aboard, but failed before it was manned for the first time,
about 2 weeks after it was launched.
Brad
Sparks:
Skylab-3 remains a mystery with the color photos and
optical ranging yielding an approximate 800-foot size of the space UFO, much
larger than the largest satellite then in space (the 150-foot Skylab-3). [Sparks interviewed
Skylab-3 astronaut Dr. Owen Garriott shortly after the return to earth - Fran
Ridge].”
My comment:
My comment:
“There was no man-made
satellite that could explain this sighting and hence the object was truly
anomalous,” Francis L. Ridge writes. This means that this is one of the UFO
cases that prove that UFOs are as real as airliners flying overhead.

UFO Report:
“The 1973 UFO Chronology: A World-Wide Wave”
Released: 15 April 2007,
Updated: 17 March 2018
(NICAP.org)
Quote from the UFO report (the introduction):
“This is a 35-page chronology of UFO incidents and
events for 1973, a
major, world-wide sighting wave. Our thanks for these chronologies must go to
our documentation team: Richard Hall (the original 1973 chronology from UFOE
II), William Wise (Project Blue Book Archive), Dan Wilson (archive researcher),
Brad Sparks (Comprehensive Catalog of Project Blue Book Unknowns), and Jean
Waskiewicz (online NICAP DBase [NSID]), and Michael Swords.
In January of 1973 I was transferred from Hillsboro , Illinois to Mt. Vernon , Indiana , and
set up the UFO Filter
Center to log UFO reports in the Midwest for the MADAR (UFO detection) Project. The states
included in the study were: Missouri , Illinois , Indiana , Ohio , Kentucky and Tennessee . Therefore this
chronos is probably more comprehensive for those states. Most of the NL
(nocturnal light) cases that I logged from the UFO Filter Center calls were not used in this
chronos, so what you see are the more notable cases. Here is a sample of one of
the message slips hastily completed regarding a sighting that COULD have been
of value had it been investigated, but I was unable to get enough information.
As evidence for the nuclear connection continued to
mount, world-shaking events were taking place which led to the Arab/Israeli
War, fought from October 6 to October 26. The war had far-reaching implications
for many nations.
The 1973 sighting wave was concentrated in the last
half of the year, and featured the largest number of humanoid occupant sightings
in many years. Several abductions were reported during this period (see Section
XIII, UFOE II). The sightings peaked in mid to late October, with October 17
representing perhaps one of the most extraordinary single days for
‘high-strangeness’ cases in UFO history (see Section XII). Dr. Richard Haines
provided this Table 1, 116, Table 1,
117 of aircraft incidents in 1979 (Ref.
8).
Note: In regard to Humanoid Reports, there doesn’t
appear to be any cases as solid as a military radar-visual triangulation case,
nor any military multiple-witness incidents, nor any humanoid cases involving
radar-visual tracking, or where any astronomers or PhD scientists have seen
humanoids and UFO’s? It is important for us to list them, however, but only
those incidents where UFOs were observed at the time or supporting evidence
warrants.

UFO Case Report (E-mail):
“Subject: Emden MO, July 13, 1973”
By Joan Woodward, Animal Reaction Specialist, 11 April
2006
(NICAP.org)
The whole UFO case report:
The whole UFO case report:
“Animal Reaction Feature:
A dog that was normally outdoors at night and that
normally barked at and chased any animal that came near the house, began
barking at 3:30 AM. This barking was unusual, described as a ‘scared’ bark,
causing the witness to get up and see what was happening.
The dog was barking at a glowing object and would not
leave the porch. Normally in that situation, the dog would take off after
whatever had attracted its attention. The witness stated that this night the
dog was clearly afraid and continued barking from the porch and would not leave
the porch.
The witness also noted he heard cattle bellowing on a
hill, and when the light moved off, he heard neighbor’s dogs start barking. [No
information was given on the location of the cattle or of the neighbor’s house
relative to witness and the unknown light.—jw]
The Sighting:
The object was described as egg shaped or oblong,
about the size of an average car. It had
a 3-dimensional appearance, ‘like you could look through it, or right into it.’ The outside was orange and toward the center
it was brighter and a slightly different color.
The colors were described as similar to setting sun but not dark enough
to be considered red. The night was very quiet with no wind.
The witness made an effort to hear any sound from the
object but heard nothing. He noted that
even when the object started moving, he still could hear nothing.
The object, judging by a tree in front of it, was
estimated to be 20 feet
or less from the ground and was in the area of a clearing. It remained still
and in view for about 10 minutes. Then
the witness’s wife, watching from indoors while he watched from the porch,
turned on house lights. At that point, the object flickered slightly and
started moving away slowly and steadily, maintaining its low altitude. It speed
was estimated as 5 mph
and it was moving in a northwest direction. The object was lost to sight after
after 20 seconds as it became obscured by trees. The witness heard the
neighbor’s dogs start barking about 3 minutes later. [The only direction
indicated was that the glowing object disappeared moving to the NW. Using
YourSky (fourmilab.ch/yoursky/) to see if any bright objects were near the
horizon at the time of the sighting, I found Mars was roughly 35° in the SE
sky, unlikely a factor. However, the 97%
illuminated moon was due to set 4:05 AM
(verified with USNO) and would have been very near the horizon SW horizon. I
cannot say the setting moon was or was not involved in this sighting without
directions and knowledge of the topography. The witness reports the dog was
reacting in the direction of the glowing object, suggesting something was
happening other than the moon setting. However, it is always possible that the
dog was reacting to something other than what the witness was watching.—jw]

“Are We Alone? –
Strange Memphis UFO Case Still Unsolved”
30 April 2003
(WREG-TV, Memphis, Tennessee)
Source: UFO UpDates, Toronto, Canada
WREG-TV reports on the two UFO sightings of Lamar
Todd,
a Memphis police Captain, who served in the elite TACT
squad.
The UFO sightings occurred in about 1973 and 1977.
Several police officers who stayed to the north of
where Todd was located also saw a UFO (the 1973 incident) at the same time.
The 1977 UFO incident was also witnessed by three
other TACT squad officers.
Quote from the article:
“Lamar Todd isn’t just any UFO observer either, he’s a
Memphis police Captain, who served in the elite TACT squad. His first encounter
came in about 1973, in
South Memphis. He saw a strange light in the sky. ‘I stopped, stepped out of my
car and looked up. I could see the light myself, but there was no helicopter noise ...,’
Todd described. He later learned Memphis Police had grounded its choppers for
the night.
But about that same time, the police radio's crackled
with sightings to the north. ‘advising there are police officers at THP station
observing a Unidentified Flying Object.’ said them dispatcher. ‘It’s trying to
land behind Plough incorporated. It’s flashing red blue and green looks like
it's trying to look for a landing area,’ said an unidentified officer on the
scene at Jackson and Warford.
The sighting faded into memory until 4 years later.
Again, Todd, this time with partner Jerry Jeter see something at night along 240
and Norris. ‘My partner Jerry Jeter took a scoped rifle out of the truck we
were driving, and pointed at it so we could get a better look and the craft
moved off to the north,’ Todd explained.
Three other TACT squad officers saw the same thing
over power lines near the north precinct.”

UFO News Article:
“Rutledge releases six-year study – 34 UFO
sightings in region called ‘incredible’ by physicist”
6 December 1979
(Enterprise-Courier, Charleston , Missouri )
Sources: U.F.O. Newsclipping Service, Plumerville , Arkansas
and AFU.se
The whole article (Page 2):
“Dr. Harley Rutledge has announced part of the results
of a six-year scientific field study of Unidentified Flying Objects he directed
while chairing the physics department at Southeast
Missouri State
University in Cape Girardeau .
During that six-year period, the professor said, he
and co-workers had experienced 153 sightings of 174 UFOs. He labelled 34 of the
sightings as incredible because the UFOs exhibited physical or behavioral
properties beyond known man-made technology.
Rutledge, director of Project Identification, a
University-based organization of scientists, engineers, students, and amateur
astronomers formed to study UFOs, said that on 32 occasions UFOs seemed to
react to him and other Project members. ‘It’s enough to make you think someone
is playing a game with us.’
Covering a large area of Southeast Missouri, the field
study has extended 30 miles
north of St. Louis, 80
miles west of the Mississippi River, and into Illinois.
The Project has logged 26 sightings of 37 UFOs near
Piedmont, where the study began in April, 1973; 17 sightings of 19 UFOs near Farmington ; and 104 sightings of 117 UFOs near the
Mississippi River along a 70
mile stretch from Perryville to Sikeston . But 48 sightings of 50 UFOs were
from within or near the city limits of Cape
Girardeau itself. ‘Often UFOs have hovered over or
near the city,’ Rutledge said.
In once [sic] case a Cape Girardeau girl reported being chased by
a small disc flying at treetop level. It temporarily blinded the girl by
flashing a bright light down upon her as she reached the door of her home. Two witnesses
verified the experience.
Rutledge reports that many of the UFOs were observed
in motion and 41 UFOs changed motion by starting, stopping, or changing
direction. In some cases hovering lights streaked across the sky in a fraction
of a second at low altitude and even under a cloud cover. Rutledge has observed
a light make an instantaneous right-angle turn, the light switching off 20
seconds later. ‘If that was an object having mass, that kind of turn is impossible,’
Rutledge emphasized. ‘But I’ve seen a lot of things that looked impossible.’
Of the 174 UFOs observed by Project members, 88 have
been mere balls of light. Five were seen to turn on, 47 turn off, while 36
turned on and off. Six different colors have been observed: 50 off-white, 27 amber,
21 white, 7 red, 5 yellow, and two lights were a green color. Five lights
changed color.
Seven craft have been observed, including two discs
and a bullet-shaped object. One of the discs was observed in daylight by
Rutledge from his office at the University. The bullet-shaped object, also
observed in daylight, changed color and vanished.
Contrary to popular representations of UFOs on
television and in the movies, only three UFOs observed by Rutledge and his
crews made sound.
Eighteen sightings occurred in daylight and 18 more at
dusk. These 36 sightings constitute nearly one-fourth the Project totals and
under conditions where sunlight would have illuminated any craft in the sky.
‘I’m not the only one seeing these things,’ Rutledge
pointed out. During the 153 sightings, 622 persons have been present,
representing more than 30 Project members and well over a hundred different
persons as spectators. That averages about four persons present per sighting. ‘How
could any UFO study, or single sighting, be better documented than this?’ he
asks.
Rutledge promises that soon he will release more
startling results from Project data to the public . ‘In the beginning, we
formed this organization to seek the truth and present it to the public,’
Rutledge stated. ‘At first I was reticent to describe some of our incredible
experiences for fear of ridicule. We have been careful not to make
unsubstantiated claims.’ ”
