“This report is derived from three major sources: 1) the Magonia Database, sightings catalogued by Jacques Vallee and presented in his great work, Passport to Magonia, and,  2) The UFO Evidence, 1964, Richard Hall, and, 3) Strange Company (2007), Keith Chester. This report deals only with sightings AFTER the turn of the 20th Century and up to the end of 1938. For the WWII years (1939-1946) click here. The illustration used above came from Jim Klotz’ wonderful web site, ufopop.org/. All of the beautiful magazine covers that can be found on the site were produced during this period, and are a must-see.

Early 20th Century Sightings up to, and including, the year 1938

May 13, 1909; King’s Lynn, England

9:45 PM. A cigar-shaped object illuminated the terrain brightly in King’s Lynn. A witness’s attention was drawn to the object by a ‘whirring noise’ and seeing the ground lit up like day. Looking up, he saw the airship-like object speed overhead, two men visible in an undercarriage, and disappear in the distance within a few minutes. (Hall, 2000, p. 7)

May 19, 1909; Wroxsam (Wroxham) [my addition], Norfolk, England

23:30. A lone motorcyclist observed a globular light traveling in a straight trajectory overhead. During its passage, the motocycle headlamp failed to operate. He stopped his machine when this occurred, but the headlamp began to operate again after the UFO’s passage. (Rodeghier; East Anglican  Daily Times, May 21, 1909)

May 18, 1909; Caerphilly, Wales

11:00 p.m. Mr. Lethbridge was walking along a road near the mountains when he saw on the grass a large tube-like machine. Aboard were two men wearing furs and talking excitedly in a language the witness could not understand. The grass was found depressed at the site after the object had flown off. June 16, 1909; Donghoi (Dong Hoi) [my addition], Annam

4:10 a.m. An elongated object following a west to east trajectory flew over the town. It gave off a strong light and was seen by two fishermen to plunge into the sea 6 km away from the coast, after a steady flight of about 9 min. (Magonia #37, Anatomy 21)

‘Mysterious Airship’ emitting a bright beam of light appeared moving SE to NW, hovered over city, moved away. Seen again two hours later; hovered, moved away to south and turned east. Observed over Boston and Lynn, Mass, next night. [N.Y. Tribune, 12-23-09; N.Y. Sun, 12-24-09]”

UFO Case Report: “06-10-1909”

The whole UFO case report:

“That, in the Nautical Meteorological Annual, published by the Danish Meteorological Institute, appears a report upon a ‘singular phenomenon’ that was seen by Capt. Gabe, of the Danish East Asiatic Co.’s steamship Bintang. At 3 A.M., June l0, 1909, while sailing through the Straits of Malacca, Captain Gabe saw a vast revolving wheel of light, flat upon the water—‘long arms issuing from a center around which the whole system appeared to rotate.’ So vast was the appearance that only half of it could be seen at a time, the center lying near the horizon. This display lasted about fifteen minutes. Heretofore we have not been clear upon the important point that forward motions of these wheels do not synchronize with a vessel’s motions, and freaks of disregard, or, rather, commonplaces of disregard, might attempt to assimilate with lights of a vessel. This time we are told that the vast wheel moved forward, decreasing in brilliancy, and also in speed of rotation, disappearing when the center was right ahead of the vessel-or my own interpretation would be that the source of light was submerging deeper and deeper and slowing down because meeting more and more resistance.

UFO Case Report: “06-16-1909”

The whole UFO case report:

“M. Beljonne, at Phu-Lien Observatory, Tonkin, sends us peculiar bolide observations. The first one, especially remarkable, was made at Dong Hoi, Annam, by M. Delingette, Inspector in the Civil Guard, head of the meteorological station. At Dong Hoi, on June 16 at 4:10 A.M., a bolide of an elongated shape, truncated at both ends, flew over the city on a west-east course, casting a great luminosity. The witnesses--Hoang Nic, of Dong Hoi; Tran Ninh, of Sa-Dong-Danh; Quyen, of Dong-Duong-Hoi; and Danh Lui, of the same village--who were fishing at sea, reported that the phenomenon lasted from eight to ten minutes, between the time the object appeared and the time it fell into the sea, at about six kilometers from shore.

“RED, WHITE, AND BLUE. CITY MINISTER’S STORY.

The Rev. B. Cozens, chaplain to the Port Melbourne Seamen’s Mission, came last night into ‘The Argus’ office, and made the following statement about beautiful lights floating on Saturday night (7 August 1909) over the Dandenong Ranges.

‘I had been staying for the week-end at Kangaroo Ground, near Eltham, on a farm in which I have an interest,’ he said. ‘The house is situated on a ridge and commands a splendid view of Dandenong and, on the other side, of the Dividing Range. At 10 o’clock on Saturday night my wife and I saw two beautiful revolving lights high up in the air above the Dandenong Range. These lights whirled like the propellers of ships, slowed down, dipped, and rose again, as if they were beating up in a zig-zag course against the wind. They were about six miles apart, and about half a mile in the air over the top of the range. They changed from white to red, and then to blue, as if they were revolving beacons with three-coloured slides.

‘So as to have some confirmation of what I thought even then might have been an optical illusion, I called out a neighbour, Mr. J. Swain and his two sons. Mr Swain is a monumental mason, and carries on business at the corner of Latrobe and Exhibition streets. We watched the lights from 10 till 12. One of them had almost moved out of sight over the back of the Divide by that time, and the other was working towards the same place. I rose at 2 o’clock and saw the second nearly over the range, and five more very dim in the distance, driving up in the track of the ones we had seen. They were very faint indeed, and very far away. They seemed to be coming from the lakes along the coast. The second followed the track of the first. The whole impression of their movements was that of machinery (my emphasis). After 2 o’clock I saw no more of them. None of the neighbours except Mr. Swain and his sons seem to have seen them. They were probably indoors, as the night was cold.’ ”

UFO News Article: “Mysterious Airship. EAST ANGLIAN EXCITEMENT.”

“Residents of some parts of East Anglia are keenly excited just now about a mysterious airship which has been seen hovering over the district in the early hours of the morning, with a searchlight. Nobody appears to be able to throw any light on the ownership of the vessel, or the purpose of these after-midnight ascents, and, of course—in the absence of definite information—people are saying it must be a party of Germans spying out the land.

The object was first seen a few weeks ago by a Peterborough policeman on duty late at night, and also by several railwaymen who were on night duty at March. A few days later it was seen at Ely.

All are agreed that the object is oblong in shape, and it is alleged to carry a searchlight. Several of those who saw it declare that it made a noise like a motor-car, and travelled at a great pace.

During the movement of troops in Gyppeswyk (Gippeswyk) Park, Ipswich, the other night, it was seen frequently. Only one person, a farmer, has seen this mysterious object in the sky during the daytime. The first reports were received with incredulity, but the fact that the object has been seen in several parts of North Cambs and the surrounding district at different times has encouraged the belief that some mysterious airship is patrolling East Anglia during the hours between sunset and sunrise. Considerable excitement prevails, and a keen watch is being kept.”

“The [Air Force] and police are investigating numerous UFO sightings near the border with the Netherlands and West Germany, officials said Friday.

Since Nov. 29, dozens of people and police officials in the northeastern Liege province said they’ve seen luminous objects in the sky, with some of them describing a flying platform scanning the surface with three huge searchlights, while others talk of dancing lights.

During the same period, air traffic controllers ‘found radar blips on the screens that could not be immediately explained,’ said Defense Ministry spokesman Col. Michel Mandel.

At the time of the sightings there were no authorized low-level flights in the region.

‘We are looking for a rational explanation,’ he said.

Although Mandel cast doubts on several witness accounts, the Belgian Society for the Study of Space Phenomena said Friday it would send members to the German-speaking region in Liege and across the border in the Netherlands and West Germany this weekend.

The society said it had 150 witness accounts, in addition to photo and videotaped material.”

The Item reports on the first UFO sightings that were made during the 1989-1990 Belgian UFO wave.

UFO News Article: “Navy tracks UFO at 3,000mph”

“Are UFO’s real? Certainly, most of those people who see them believe they are real. Even more convincing, UFOs are sometimes picked up on radar. Following is a case that occurred at a time when no nation on earth had any rocket or aircraft capable of doing what this object did. In fact, we still don’t have such capabilities. 

The USS Dyess steamed slowly through the night off the Atlantic Coast, keeping track of all air traffic within hundreds of miles to prevent any sneak attack by the Soviet Union.

‘We were afraid the Russians were going to bomb Washington at that time because we had gone into Korea,’ said Dr. Robert Wood, who was then a Navy lieutenant commander.

The Dyess, a radar picket destroyer, was about 125 miles southeast of Cape May, N.J., and Lt. Cmdr. Wood, the ship’s operations officer and an air controller, was manning one of the radars at the time.

‘We were plotting all the aircraft going north and south along the coast and inland as far as the Appalachians and any objects that were comng [sic] in from the northeast, the east and the southeast.

‘Every aircraft had to have a certain set of parameters — distances, heights and whatnot — on their point of arrival over us.

‘On this particular night — it was about 11:30 one night in March 1951, I forget the exact date — this object came in from the east and got within about 30 miles of us when it just stopped dead.

‘It had been moving rather slowly, about 85 to 90 knots. We didn’t have the altitude-determining radar on at the time and we had to get one of the operators to come up. When he did, we found the object was somewhere in the neighborhood of 3,000 to 4,000 feet altitude.

‘This object gave us a blip on the radar screen about the size of a large aircraft, like a DC8 or a DC9. I phoned the bridge and they informed the captain, who ordered the ship to head out in the direction of the object.

We’d been loafing along steaming in circles, and didn’t have all our boiler power on. We did about as much as we could, about 22 knots, out in that direction.

‘We got to within about 15 miles of that object when it suddenly took off at a very high rate of speed. It was going so rapidly that as the radar turned we could see the blip just jumping across the screen.

‘We estimated it was going 5,000 kilometers an hour or roughly 3,000 miles an hour.

‘Then, when it got up within 35 or 40 miles south of Nantuckett, it suddenly just took off and went straight up!

‘I called the bridge and said, ‘We’re losing contact, the object is fading.’ And the operator on the altitude-determining radar in the other end of the room said, ‘NO! I’ve still got it! It’s 100 miles high and it’s still going straight up!’

The object then faded from the second radar.

Altogether, they had tracked the object about 35 to 40 minutes, said Dr. Wood, who is now a professor of astronomy and director of the observatory at Brevard Community College in Cocoa, Fla.

‘We reported it to the Pentagon but we never heard anything more about it.’

‘He couldn’t explain what it was he tracked that night. He has long accepted the idea that it was an unidentified flying object, whatever that may be.’

‘That was in 1951,’ he said. ‘I knew radar and I knew what it could do. We didn’t have any aircraft that could go that fast, especially after it came and hovered. And then when it got up near Nantuckett it just went straight up and disappeared. 

‘There must be something there. There’s more than just smoke. There must be fire.’ ”

The article is written by the late journalist Bob Pratt, who for years investigated the UFO phenomenon.
