Unidentified Radar Return (BB 1095)

The whole UFO case report:
Fran Ridge:
In May of 2005 we found MAXW-PBB9-1289 (an AIIR, Air Intelligence Information Report) while looking for something else. Since I was working on White Sands cases I set it aside. Then, a week later, I stumbled across another reference. NARA-PBB85-654 mentioned an unidentified radar return. It was marked with brackets as secret. However, it was listed as having occurred on April 8th at 2000 hours (8:00 PM). I checked the NICAP Db and it wasn’t there, so I then went to the ‘Bluelist’, the outdated PBB Unknowns. Duncanville was listed, as Item 1095, and as April 5th. But Dan Wilson & Brad Sparks had noted the correct date as April 4th.

Brad Sparks:
April 4, 1952.  Duncanville, Texas (BBU 1095)
8:30 p.m. (CST)  USAF Cpl. Billy D. Greer and PFC John W. Harrington of the Radar Maintenance Section, 147th AC&W Squadron, tracked unidentified target by FPS-10 radar first to the NW at 310°-315° azimuth at about 70 nautical miles (80 miles) moving at high speed of about 2,160 knots (2,500 mph) until it disappeared off the scope at maximum range of 260 n.mi. (300 miles). Height-finder reading not taken, estimated at 42,000+ ft due to radar beam coverage at max range. (Jan Aldrich;  FUFOR Index)”

Dan Wilson:
March 24, 1952, 60 miles west of Point Conception, Calif.
At 8:45 a.m. PST, Lt. Hancock, Radar Observer, and Lt. Cone, Navigator, aboard a B-29 observed on the radar scope a clear and distinct radar return of an object with a calculated speed of 3000 MPH. The radar return was observed for 20-30 seconds. The altitude of the object was of less than 25,000 feet. Both observers were regarded as highly reliable officers.”

U.S. Government UFO Document:
“SUBJECT: Contemplated Action to Determine the Nature and Origin of the Phenomena Connected with the Reports of Unusual Flying Objects”

3 January 1952
(U.S. Air Force, Washington, D.C.)

Source: NICAP.org

Quote from the document (not written in U.S. Department of Defense document format):
“1. The continued reports of unusual flying objects requires positive action to determine the nature and origin of this phenomena. The action taken thus far has been designed to track down and evaluate reports from casual observers throughout the country. Thus far, this action has produced results of doubtful value and the inconsistencies inherent in the nature of the reports has given neither positive nor negative proof of the claims.

2. It is logical to relate the reported sightings to the known development of aircraft, jet propulsion, rockets and range extension capabilities in Germany and the U.S.S.R.

3. In view of the above facts and the persistent reports of unusual flying objects over parts of the United States, particularly the east and west coast and in the vicinity of atomic energy production and testing facilities, it is apparent that positive action must be taken to determine the nature of the objects and, if possible, their origin.

4. In view of the facts outlined above, it is considered mandatory that the Air Force take positive action at once to definitely determine the nature and, if possible, the origin of the reported unusual flying objects. The following action is now contemplated:

a. to require ATIC to provide at least three teams to be matched up with an equal number of teams from ADC for the purpose of taking radar scope photographs and visual photographs of the phenomena;

b. to select sites for these teams, based on the concentration of already reported sightings over the United States; (these areas are, generally, the Seattle area, the Albuquerque area, and the New York-Philadelphia area) and

c. to take the initial steps in this project during early January 1952.

W. M. Garland
Brigadier General, USAF
Assistant for Production
Directorate of Intelligence”

Brigadier General William M. Garland sent this letter to Major General (later promoted to Lieutenant General) John A. Samford, Director of Intelligence, U.S. Air Force.

Garland was Samford’s primary aide, according to the book, UFOs and Government: A Historical Inquiry (Page 132).

Brigadier General William M. Garland (who himself had seen a UFO) and Major General John A. Samford are mentioned in the book, UFOs and Government: A Historical Inquiry (Google Books). UFO News Article:
“CITY SURVEY CREW SIGHTS SAUCER
THROUGH LENS OF TRANSIT IN RENO”

8 July 1952
(Reno Gazette-Journal, Nevada)

Source: ufonewspaper.blogspot.com

The whole article:
“Flying saucers, as well as daylight meteors, were in the news today in Reno.

Elliott Cann, city engineer, gave a belated report that a city survey crew sighted an object last Thursday (3 July 1952) described as resembling an inverted parachute.

The four members of the crew, as well as two interested bystanders, were able to watch the object through a transit lens for ‘three to four minutes.’

Croyden York, the man in charge of the survey crew, said he and three other city surveyors were in a truck in the Alameda Heights subdivision just north of the race track last Thursday when they first saw the object hovering in the sky over the Spanish Springs mountains at about 3:15 p.m.

‘I stopped the truck, set up the transit and got a sight of it,’ Mr. York said.

The head surveyor said he and the other crew members and a man and a woman who came running to see what was going on all were able to watch the object through the transit.

Mr. York described the ‘flying saucer’ as resembling an inverted
p a r a c h u t e with three vapor streams rising from its surface up to a point  some ‘150 feet or more’ where they joined together.

And Mr. York said, ‘those six pairs of eyes’ which looked through the transit weren’t all that saw the object that day.

He said he had heard other reports of a saucer-shaped object over Peavine mountain earlier that day, and a ‘reliable person’ reported seeing the same type of object about 150 miles south of Reno Thursday evening, he added.

‘While we were watching it, it hovered over the mountains, almost perfectly still, for three or four minutes, then took off toward the direction of Fernley and disappeared,’ he said.

But while it was traveling away, Mr. York said he and the crewmen were abel to follow its path with the transit.

‘And if it had been a jet plane, it couldn’t have been followed that way,’ he said.

Mr. York said the vapor trail from the object discredited the idea that it might have been a jet plane.

‘If it had been a jet, the vapor would have been parallel to the earth’s surface as it moved across the sky. But the vapor from this was vertical.

Just how high in the sky the object was, Mr. York said he couldn’t estimate. But he said it was close enough to the ground that if there was anybody in it, they could have been taking pictures.

The other crewmen with Mr. York were Burt Chanslor, Terry Whobrey and Wayne Peterson. The two interested bystanders were unidentified.

City Engineer Elliott Cann, in reporting the incident belatedly today, explained that there are so many stories these days about objects in the skies that persons are apt to be sceptical.

‘But every one of these four men swore that they saw something,’ he said.

Mr. Cann wasn’t on the scene himself.”

Quote from the video text:
“In the spring of 1952, UFO sightings go off the charts. For years, the U.S. government has told the postwar public that UFOs do not exist, but behind the scenes, U.S. Air Force officials are divided. Join us as we investigate the 1952 UFO Wave; a spike in sightings so extreme that the U.S. government is forced to confront the UFO phenomena head on.”
