UFO Article:
“HISTORY STORIES: In 1952, ‘Flying Saucers’
Over Washington Sent the Press Into a Frenzy”

10 March 2019
(History, New York City, New York)

The article reports on the July 1952 WashingtonD.C., UFO sightings.

People living in Washington, D.C., sighted UFOs on two successive weekends, 19-20 and 26-27 (p.m. into a.m.) July 1952. Both UFO incidents involved multiple UFOs.

The UFOs were also seen by several U.S. Air Force pilots (and commercial pilots) and registered on multiple ground radars.

History presents several July 1952 UFO news articles that focus on the July 1952 U.S. UFO incidents.

Wikipedia article: “1952 Washington, D.C. UFO incident”:

Quote from the Wikipedia article:
“The 1952 Washington, D.C. UFO incident, also known as the Washington flap, the Washington National Airport Sightings, or the Invasion of Washington, was a series of unidentified flying object reports from July 12 to July 29, 1952, over Washington, D.C. The most publicized sightings took place on consecutive weekends, July 19–20 and July 26–27.”

UFO Short Film:
“The March of Time” –
The July 1952 Washington, D.C., UFO Incidents

1952
(Time Inc., New York City, New York)

Text by GettyImages.fi:
“1952: ROUTE CONTROL CENTER: CAA radar expert James Richey w/ LIFE Military correspondent Clay Blair Jr. SOT saying he hasn’t talked to [Samford, not Sanford], however, they’re going to try to explain it, Blair saying military says light refraction.”

Transcript of CAA radar expert James Richey’s statement:
“I haven’t talked to General Samford. I am sure he knows a lot more about this stuff than I do. However – I can’t think that that explains the lights that we see appearing across the sky – that these pilots have reported – the pilots seeing lights. However, I have no doubt that it can be explained as some kind of weather phenomenon, too. I am sure the Air Force is gonna try to do it. They are gonna try to point things out – and make everybody satisfied that that’s what they’re seeing – something caused by weather inversion.”

My comment: The important sentences here are: “However – I can’t think that that [weather inversion] explains the lights that we see appearing across the sky – that these pilots have reported – the pilots seeing lights.” “They are gonna try to point things out – and make everybody satisfied that that’s what they’re seeing – something caused by weather inversion.”

On top of that – one can see from Richey’s body language (my interpretation) that he does not buy the “weather inversion” explanation for one second. It is always good to see an honest person.

UFO Case Directory (IMCAT):
“The Tremonton, Utah / Newhouse Color Film
July 2, 1952
Tremonton, Utah”

(NICAP.org)

The whole UFO case report:
Fran Ridge:
July 2, 1952; Tremonton, Utah (BBU)
11:10 a.m. Navy photographer Delbert C. Newhouse and his wife, while driving across the state, saw a group of 12-14 shiny silver objects milling around in the sky. Newhouse stopped and retrieved his 16 mm camera and filmed extensive footage of the objects. He and his wife both reported seeing some of the objects relatively close-up and they were shaped like one plate inverted atop another. When the film was returned to Newhouse following Navy and Air Force analysis, the frames showing the discs close-up had been deleted. What Newhouse and his wife saw BEFORE he was able to get the camera out and running, reportedly, were structured objects, described as ‘gunmetal-colored objects shaped like two saucers, one inverted on top of the other.’ (*) The Air Force and the Navy, considering Newhouse’s credibility, spent considerable time and money on the analyses and to classify the Utah Film as ‘Secret’.  Also noted by the analysts was the absence of any evidence to indicate birds such as fluttering. Air Force & Navy analysis: ‘Birds and balloons immediately eliminated, within a five mile radius, aircraft could have easily been determined. In excess of five miles the objects were moving faster than aircraft could achieve, except in straightline speed runs.’ And, surprisingly, an FBI letter documents the importance placed on this incident. **

Update 17 Nov. 2013
Fran Ridge:
Several years ago I had a taped telephone interview with Newhouse and he stuck to his story throughout. At the very least this was a good daylight sighting with two witnesses (one very reputable) and good motion picture footage that neither the Air Force, nor the Navy, nor others could logically explain. The tape was lost went my basement flooded. My last contact with him was a letter dated May 29, 2005. *** Newhouse passed away August 11, 2006 in Portland, Oregon.”

U.S. Government UFO Document:
“SUBJECT: (Unclassified) Radar Sightings of Aerial Phenomena, National Airport, Washington, D.C., 25 July 1952 - SPECIAL INQUIRY”

By Gilbert R. Levy, Chief, Counter-Intelligence Division,
Directorate of Special Investigations, The Inspector General,
29 July 1952
(U.S. Air Force, Washington, D.C.)

Source: NICAP.org
Document source: bluebookarchive.org

The memorandum was sent to General Carroll.

The whole text of the memorandum:
“1.  In light of recent wide publicity concerning the above subject, I caused a check to be made for the purpose of determining the basis of recent releases to news media.

        2.  We were advised by the current Intelligence Branch, Estimates Division, AFOIN, which has staff responsibility with respect to these reports, that much of the publicity of the past few days is the result of a radar sighting of unidentified aerial objects by the Civil Aeronautics Administration at National Airport at 2115 hours, 25 July 1952. These sightings continued from 2115 hours, 25 July until 0010 hours on 26 July, and were described by radar operators as ‘good sharp targets.’ They were observed in numbers from four to eight.

        3.  At 2320 hours, 25 July 1952, two (2) Air Force F-94s were dispatched from New Castle AFB, Delaware, for the purpose of intercepting objects which have been sighted by radar. One of the F-94s reportedly made visual contact with one of the objects and at first appeared to be gaining on it, but the object and the F-94 were observed on the radar scope and appeared to be traveling at the same approximate speed. However, when it attempted to overtake the object, the object disappeared both from the pursuant aircraft and the radar scope. The pilot of the F-94 remarked of the ‘incredible speed of the object.’

        4.  The Director of Intelligence advises that no theory exists at the present time as to the origin of the objects and they are considered to be unexplained. Much of the publicity has been based on authorized news releases by the Air Force.

        5.  We were informed that any additional information pertinent to the matter would be furnished OSI.

        6.  We are at present making no inquiry into the matter in
the absence of a request from AFOIN under Air Force Letter
No. 200-2.”
