UFO News Article:
“Belgian military investigates UFO reports”
9 December 1989
(The Item, Sumter , South Carolina )
Source: Google News
The whole article:
“The [Air Force] and police are investigating numerous UFO sightings
near the border with the Netherlands
and West Germany ,
officials said Friday.
Since Nov. 29, dozens of people and police officials in the northeastern
Liege province said they’ve seen luminous
objects in the sky, with some of them describing a flying platform scanning the
surface with three huge searchlights, while others talk of dancing lights.
During the same period, air traffic controllers ‘found radar blips on
the screens that could not be immediately explained,’ said Defense Ministry
spokesman Col. Michel Mandel.
At the time of the sightings there were no authorized low-level flights
in the region.
‘We are looking for a rational explanation,’ he said.
Although Mandel cast doubts on several witness accounts, the Belgian
Society for the Study of Space Phenomena said Friday it would send members to
the German-speaking region in Liege and across
the border in the Netherlands
and West Germany
this weekend.
The society said it had 150 witness accounts, in addition to photo and
videotaped material.”
My comment:
The Item reports on the first UFO sightings that were made during the
1989-1990 Belgian UFO wave.
I also reported about this Associated Press article on 26 May 2012.

Quote from the Wikipedia article:
“The Belgian Air Component (Dutch: Luchtcomponent, French:
Composante air) is the air arm of the Belgian Armed Forces,[2][3] and until
January 2002 it was officially known as the Belgian Air Force (Dutch:
Belgische Luchtmacht; French: Force aérienne belge). The Belgian military aviation
was founded in 1909 and is one of the world's oldest air services.”

UFO Journal Article:
“UFO OVER COPPER SMELTER”
Vol. 29, No. 7
Published: August 1981
(The A.P.R.O. Bulletin, Tucson , Arizona )
Source: AFU.se
Quote from the article (Page 1):
“On the evening of October 23rd, 1980, one of the most
well-witnessed UFO sightings in history took place in the little mining town of
Morenci , Arizona .
Located on US 666, it is about 20
miles northeast of Safford ,
Arizona , which is on Interstate 10 in southeastern Arizona . Morenci is a
typical Arizona
copper mining town and the site of two huge copper smelters which are owned and
operated by Phelps-Dodge Corporation.
APRO’s investigator on this case was Jim McCoy who did
in-depth interviews with five of the witnesses. There were a host of other
witnesses and hopefully they can be interviewed at a later date. However,
inasmuch as the five men observed the object at relatively close range, their
testimony is central to the facts in the case.
When the vehicle was brought to a stop and the men
looked up, they were amazed to see a boomerang-shaped object approaching the
north smoke stack of the smelter area at a very low speed which they later told
Mr. McCoy that they estimated to be about five miles per hour. When it arrived
at a position directly over the north stack, it stopped and hovered for a
minute or so, then came straight down vertically to an estimated altitude of
about 700 to 1,000 feet ,
not far above the stack. After a brief period of time a brillant light erupted
from the forward apex of the boomerang configuration and shone directly down
into the interior of the north smelter stack. The witnesses described this
light as brighter than a search light or that of an arc welder.
APRO was alerted concerning the Morenci sighting on
January 10 by Mr. Samuel Player, the editor of the Eastern Arizona Courier of
Safford, Arizona ,
and some of the above information was carried in the press. In addition to the five
smelter workers, who were ‘almost’ under the object, Greenlee County Sheriff
Ralph Gomez, several Morenci businessmen among others, witnessed the passage of
the huge object. One hundred (100) members of the Morenci High School
band and the director were among the host of individuals who watched.
There are indications that this object was witnessed
on at least one and possibly more occasions and the Bulletin will follow up on
this case if further details come to hand.”

“23 October 1980 20:55
High School Band incident.”
Quote from the UFO case report:
“A high school band was holding practice in the
evening at a playing field between Clifton and Morenci , Arizona .
They sighted a string of lights shaped in a triangular pattern hovering above
them. It would move and stop, then move and stop again. At 8:55 p.m. in Morenci , Arizona
a crew of maintenance workers at a copper smelting plant saw a UFO with 12 red
lights and a big searchlight on the front.
…, boomerang-shaped UFO descended to 700 feet altitude, beam of
light emitted shown directly on interior of smoke stack. Abrupt maneuvers,
white tubes connect 8 red lights.
A V-shaped object was observed.
One black V-shaped object, about 300 feet across, was
observed by five witnesses at a smelter for several hours (Nevarez; Rogers). No
sound was heard.”
This is a solid UFO case – reported on by Richard F.
Haines, Richard H. Hall, Larry Hatch and Willy Smith, among others.

Chilean-American science journalist and UFO researcher
J. Antonio Huneeus reports on the 1989-1990 Belgian
UFO wave.
Quote from the article (Page 12):
“First in a
two-part series.
For the past year, citizens in the French-speaking
region of Wallonia in Belgium
have experienced an extraordinary UFO wave. Thousands of witnesses, including
dozens of gendarmes (national police)
and officers of the Belgian Air Force, have described triangular-shaped
vehicles flying slowly over rooftops. hovering, beaming searchlights and
performing incredible maneuvers. The objects have been captured in some 25
videotapes and tracked on both ground and airborne radar by the military (see

“TAKING NO CHANCES”
The Inspector General (TIG) Brief, Number 8, Volume XIV,
13 April 1962

The whole article:
“For some time now the USAF has investigated all reports of unidentified flying objects (UFOs), under provisions of AFR 200-2. This has been done to leave no stones unturned in identifying objects which may pose a threat to the security of the Even though to date there has been no evidence that UFOs represent technological developments beyond the range of our present day scientific knowledge, we continue to be on the alert and examine reports submitted under the regulation. However, time and effort could be saved if individuals who make the sightings and submit reports understood that often reported UFOs are finally identified as jet aircraft, missiles, balloons, searchlights, birds, kites, anti-collision beacons, jet engine exhaust, condensation trails, known meteorological phenomena, etc. The fact that there are many manmade objects (satellites) now in orbit, may add to the items suspected of being extraterrestrial vehicles or foreign weapons threatening the security of this country.
A more careful scrutiny of sightings, which are potential objects of reports, is therefore obvious. Only objects which the observer is sure do not conform to known aircraft, missiles, or other above-mentioned items should therefore be reported.”

UFO Report:
“Subject: The Robertson Panel, 1953;
A brief Summary”
By Francis L. Ridge, 24 March 2006
(NICAP.org)
Quote from the report:
“The Robertson Panel first met formally on January 14,
1953 under the direction of Howard Percy Robertson. He was a physicist, a CIA
employee and director of the Defense Department Weapons Evaluation Group.
Other panel members were respected scientists and
military personnel who had worked on other classified military projects or
studies. All were then skeptical of UFO reports, though to varying degrees:
Louis Alvarez, physicist (and later, a Nobel Prize
winner)
Frederick C. Durant, missile expert
Samuel A. Goudsmit, Brookhaven National Laboratories
physicist
Thornton Page, astrophysicist, deputy director of
Johns Hopkins Operations Research Office.
Lloyd Berkner, physicist and J. Allen Hynek,
astronomer, were associate panel members.
The Robertson Panel’s official report concluded that
90 percent of UFO sightings could be readily identified with meteorological,
astronomical, or natural phenomena, and that the remaining 10 percent of UFO
reports could, in all likelyhood, be similarly explained with detailed study.
It was suggested that witnesses had misidentified bright stars and planets,
meteors, auroras, mirages, atmospheric temperature inversions, and lenticular
clouds; other sightings were judged as likely misinterpretation of conventional
aircraft, weather balloons, birds, searchlights, kites, and other phenomena.
Furthermore, the Panel suggested the Air Force should
begin a ‘debunking’ effort to reduce ‘public gullibility’ and demystify UFO
reports. The panel suggested a public relations campaign, using psychiatrists,
astronomers and assorted celebrities to significantly reduce public interest in
UFOs. It was also recommended that the mass media be used for the debunking,
including influential media giants like Walt Disney Corporation.
Their formal recommendation stated ‘That the national
security agencies take immediate steps to strip the Unidentified Flying Objects
of the special status they have been given and the aura of mystery they have
unfortunately acquired.’ ”

“U.F.O. OVER LONDON AIRPORT”
7 March 1959
(The Canberra Times,
ACT, Australia )
Source: Trove, National Library of Australia , Canberra , ACT,
The whole article:
“Britain ’s
Air Ministry yesterday (6 March 1959) recorded a mysterious yellow disc seen
hovering over London
as a UFO–‘unidentified flying object.’
At least four reliable witnesses saw the ‘object’ between
7.25 and 7.45 p.m.
An air traffic control officer studied it for several
minutes through binoculars before checking with radar operators – but they found no image
on their screens.
One eyewitness said last night it was like the
reflection of searchlights on clouds. However, he added, there were no clouds.
The R.A.F. Fighter Command, which was asked to
investigate, gave this official description: ‘Bright yellow light varying in
intensity. It stayed in one position for about 20 minutes, then climbed away at
high speed.’ ”
