“A bright luminous object with a long tail which is reported to have been seen in the sky over Calcutta on October 31 [1954] from the control tower of the Dum Dum airport [now Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose International Airport] has started a spate of speculation about flying saucers and Martian observers.

Airport authorities have a report from one of their technical officers about his observation of this mysterious object. It is learnt that the officer while on duty at the tower on October 31 last at about 6 p.m. suddenly found a flash in the sky which was moving at a speed of more than 500 miles per hour at an altitude of about 2,000 ft.

It was stated that the bright white object had a long luminous tail of diffused white light and was passing about five miles north of his observation point. The light appeared about three of four times brighter than an aircraft tail light and the object disappeared from his view within a minute. It did not alter its height, direction of flight or speed. It was steady in its movement and disappeared gradually.

A foreign aircraft which was circling at the time did not report anything about it at the time of briefing.

The aerodrome officer of the Dum Dum airport confirmed that such a thing had been observed and a report on the subject had been submitted to him. He declined to make any comment on the subject, but said that he was sending the report to appropriate authorities.

Rev. Father F. Goreux, astronomer, in-charge of the St. Xavier’s College observatory and senior professor of the Calcutta University commented: ‘It is not an astronomical object. That is certain.’

A doctor of science from [Louvain] University (Belgium) Rev. Goreux has done research work under Dr Kinstein, and has years of experience in astronomical research.

He said that he had also received telephone calls from some of his acquaintances in the city who claimed to have seen a similar object in the sky almost on the same date and time.

Dr Goreux explained that absence of sound could be due to a different mode of propulsion, ‘unknown to us at present.’ Its luminosity he said ‘may be a camouflage to hide its real identity.’

He added [that] the low speed and change of direction as had been observed in such cases, were not compatible with the movement of astronomical objects.

He added: ‘To my mind, the coolness of American scientific authorities seems to suggest that they know about it. Had it not been so they would not have remained silent about an object which had also been observed in America years ago.’

In this connection he referred to a very interesting report which he read some time back, in which it was stated that a  pilot while chasing such an object had his plane ‘blown to bits.’

Dr Goreux felt that the main thing was to collect observation from all quarters to determine the truth about these objects.”

“A strange glowing object, shaped like a top, was seen in the sky south-west by west from Pirie by Constable Bernard A. Egel, of Pirie, and other watchers on Saturday night (16 October 1954).

The object, which made no sound, was observed by the constable for about 15 mins. before it disappeared from sight, to be followed by another glowing object for a brief period.

Constable Egel told ‘The Recorder’ yesterday that he had been patroIIing his beat about 9.20 p.m. on Saturday when an agitated man and a girl had told him they had seen a strange object in the sky. He had immediately accompanied them to Memorial Park.

‘When I first saw the light it was hovering over Spencer Gulf, south-west by west of Pirie. It appeared to be about 1,000 ft. above the sea and about two to three miles out from Pirie. It changed color from red to orange, then green and, finally white. The light was larger at the top and tapered at the bottom, appearing in the shape of a top or an inverted electric bulb,’ said Constable Egel.

Changed Color

‘After we had watched it for about five minutes, it began to travel directly away from us, losing altitude. It moved about 10 miles and then stopped and hovered in a small circle, moving slowly, and constantly chancing color.

‘After having hovered in that position for about another five mins., it began to travel away again and continued out of sight. We watched for a few minutes but saw nothing as the light was extremely dark and the moon had not risen at that stage.

‘Following a brief interval either the same light or another appeared low over the sea about 10 miles out. It appeared to rise from the sea to a height of about 100 ft. and then travelled directly away out of sight.

Iridescent Light

‘An iridescent light came from the object, which changed color slowly. The changes of color were most definite. I had seen the light for at least 15 mins., but the other persons had watched it for about 15 mins. before approaching me.

‘The man who reported the object to me said that it had first appeared in the shape of a top with colored lights round the middle,’ added Constable Egel.

A party of motorists returning to Pirie, which included Mr. C. P. Murn (editor of "The Recorder") also reported having seen a strange red light in the sky shortly after sunset on Saturday. The light had also appeared south-west by west of Pirie.

A strange light glowing in several changing colors was seen about 8 o'clock last night high in the sky by Mr. Eric Sard, of Warnertown, and several other persons. It disappeared after a few minutes.”

During a 1954 interview with The American Weekly magazine, Oberth said: “I think that they are possibly manned by intelligent observers who are members of a race who may have been investigating our earth for centuries.”

In a 1962 Fate magazine interview he discussed possible UFO physics: “They are flying by means of artificial fields of gravity . . . They produce high-tension electric charges in order to push the air out of their paths, so it does not start glowing, and strong magnetic fields to influence the ionized air at higher altitudes. First, this would explain their luminosity . . . Secondly, it would explain the noiselessness of UFO flight . . . “Flying saucers which hovered over the Great Falls area and then took off at ‘a tremendous rate of speed,’ were reported Tuesday [29 July 1952] by a sergeant at the Great Falls Air Force Base.

Sgt. Charles Boden said he was listening to a direct communications system with McChord Air Force Base in Washington and learned that saucers were sighted over that Air Force Base ‘heading toward Great Falls.’ Boden said he immediately began scanning the skies, about 2:30 p.m. M.S.T.

Objects Sighted 

About four and a half minutes after hearing the McChord report, he said he sighted the objects. He reported that two of the saucers appeared stationary at first, then another came ‘whipping going West’ and the two stationary objects then appeared to take off, following the third.

(A McChord spokesman said Tuesday night there were several flaws in Boden’s story. He denied there had been any conversation between McChord and Great Falls bases about 2:30 p.m. concerning flying saucers over McChord. And also pointed out that saucers would not be ‘going west,’ as Boden reported, if they were traveling from McChord, in Washington, state, to Great Falls.)

Contradiction?

(‘I can say categorically we logged no unusual sightings over McChord this afternoon,’ the spokesman declared. ‘Two unusual objects at high altitude and Montana traveling at great speed were sighted in the morning, but a check showed definitely they were jets from our own base.’)

Later in the afternoon Boden said he sighted four traveling in the opposite direction. He described the objects as circular in shape and not thick and added they gave off no sound or left no vapor trails.

If the saucers over McChord and the ones Boden reported were the same, a rough estimate of the speed would be 3,360 miles an hour.

Other persons in Great Falls also said they saw saucers.”

Air Defense Command

Great Falls (later Malmstrom AFB) played a major aerial defense role in North American air defense mission. The 29th Fighter Interceptor Squadron was activated in 1953 and remained at Malmstrom until 1968, initially flying F-94C Starfire and later F-101 Voodoo interceptors.[3][9]

Great Falls was reassigned to the Central Air Defense Force at Richards-Gebaur Air Force Base in 1953. The 29th Air Division’s area of responsibility changed to include Montana, North and South Dakota and Nebraska. The 29th supervised the training of its units, and participated in numerous training exercises. On 1 July 1961, the 29th AD was relocated to Richards Gebaur AFB, Missouri.[10]

By 1954, several aircraft control and warning (radar) squadrons had been formed at the base. The 903d Aircraft Control and Warning Squadron was one of them, and operated an AN/TPS-1D (termed a ‘gap-filler’). This radar was used probably for training purposes. The 903rd AC&W Squadron subsequently relocated to Gettysburg AFS, South Dakota.

In 1957, under the control of the 801st Aircraft Control and Warning Squadron, the Malmstrom AFB radar station became operational with AN/FPS-20 search and AN/FPS-6 height-finder radars. A second AN/FPS-6 series height-finder radar was added in 1960, and subsequently was upgraded to an AN/FPS-90 set. In 1959 Malmstrom was performing air-traffic-control duties for the FAA, and joined the Semi Automatic Ground Environment (SAGE) system on 1 March 1961, the squadron being redesignated as the 801st Radar Squadron (SAGE). In 1964 Malmstrom received an AN/FPS-24 search radar, replacing the AN/FPS-20.”

      “Base commanders, and their information and operations personnel, should review AFR 80-17, 19 September 1966, to assure familiarity with their responsibilities in the event they receive an inquiry concerning UFOs, or a notice of sighting. Air Force interest in UFOs is two-fold: to determine if the UFO is a possible threat to the United States and to use the scientific or technical data gained from study of UFO reports. To attain these objectives, it is necessary to explain or identify the factor that caused the observation to be reported as an unidentified flying object – i.e., any aerial phenomenon or object which is unknown or appears out of the ordinary to the observer.

       Successful identification of UFOs requires prompt, accurate reporting and rapid evaluation of data. Any AF base which receives notice of a sighting in its vicinity must be ready to conduct an immediate investigation. Personnel who may receive the initial call, whether in operations or other base organizations, should be familiar with the local procedures established for carrying out the base’s responsibilities to screen, evaluate and report the information. Selection of the individual to serve as UFO investigating officer is a key item in implementing these responsibilities. The commander should consider carefully the scientific and technical backgrounds and previous investigating experience of all available personnel, base his choice on qualifications for gathering and evaluating the data required by AFR 80-17. Prompt on-the-spot surveys and follow-ups by the base investigator are vital for complete case information. His report must be immediate, detailed, accurate, and objective. He must make every effort to obtain pertinent data, test all leads, clues, and hypotheses, so that he will have the best possible basis for his analysis and comments in the concluding paragraph of the report.

       All personnel who may have contact with the public concerning UFO matters should be made aware of the importance of proper responses, particularly in connection with sightings which are difficult to identify. They must not only comply with the instructions in AFR 80-17 for referral of inquiries to the office which is qualified to handle them, but must refrain from any action or comment which could cause misunderstanding, either as to the UFO program or a particular case.

        The number of UFO sightings reported to the Air Force during FY 1966 was the largest of any year to date, surpassing the previous record number received in 1954. This statistic constitutes another reason why all bases should assure they have the necessary investigative capability and procedural instructions for responding to UFO notices and inquiries. (Briefing of AFR 80-17 is on page 15.)”

Jessup, who taught in Des Moines, is forever linked to the Philadelphia Experiment, a bizarre incident that has never been fully explained despite countless articles and books.

Morris Ketchum Jessup was born in Rockville, Ind., but little is known about his early life.

Upon graduating from high school, Jessup immediately went into the Navy, serving in 1918-19, and then enrolling at the University of Michigan at Ann Arbor, also in 1919.

With time out for travel, he graduated with a bachelor’s degree in science in 1926 and earned a master’s degree the next year. He studied for a doctorate degree but did not graduate.

Jessup became fascinated with astronomy and astrophysics, and a circuitous route brought him to Des Moines. In 1932, he became a professor at Drake University.

In the 1940s and 1950s, Jessup, who had left Iowa, took a particular interest in the new field of UFOs — flying saucers. With a move to Washington, D.C., in the 1950s, Jessup began writing his first book in 1954. ‘The Case for the UFO’ was published in 1955 and had moderate success, followed by ‘UFO and the Bible’ (1956) and ‘The UFO Annual’ (1956).

His last book was ‘The Expanding Case for the UFO’ (1957).

On the evening of April 20, 1959, Jessup was found moments from death, slumped over the wheel of his station wagon in a Dade County park near his Florida home. A hose attached to the car’s exhaust pipe had filled the car’s interior with carbon monoxide. No suicide note was ever found, and no autopsy was performed.

Jessup reportedly was working on a new book about the Philadelphia Experiment. Was Jessup silenced — murdered because he knew too much? The controversy continues.”
