June 17, 1977; Castelo de Bode Dam, Portugal
12:00 noon local. José Fransisco Rodrigues was flying a Portuguese Air Force Dornier 27 light plane over the Castelo de Bode dam, when suddenly, emerging from the clouds, he saw a dark object against a backdrop of white stratocumulus, slightly to the right of his plane. Thinking that the object was perhaps a cargo plane, he banked to the left and immediately radioed to ask if there was any traffic in the vicinity. The reply was negative. As the pilot completed a turn to port, the unknown object suddenly appeared at his eleven o’clock position ‘no more than six meters away’. It was definitely not a cargo plane. The upper section, partially concealed by cloud, was black, and on the lower section there appeared to be four or five panels. The object was approximately  13 to 15 meters in diameter. Suddenly it accelerated and vanished from what the pilot believes was an initial stationary position. The Dornier began to vibrate violently and went into uncontrolled dive. Struggling to regain control, the pilot pushed the control column forward. Air speed increased to 140 knots then 180 knots as the ground came nearer. Control was fortunately regained when almost ‘touching the tree tops’ and the plane was landed in one piece. - with a badly shaken pilot. During the encounter the directional electric gyroscope (connected to a magnetic compass) rotated wildly, and by the time the plane landed it had deviated by 180° relative to magnetic compass. UFO News Article:
“UFOs: ‘Unexplained’ Just
Isn’t A Good Enough Answer”

14 June 1977
(Evening Independent, St. Petersburg, Florida)

The article reports on the U.S. Air Force’s UFO projects.

Quote from the article:
“The Air Force liked to say that a lot of UFOs were ‘balloons’ even if they really didn’t bear much similarity to balloons. Like the group of objects sighted near Odessa, Wash. by USAF Lts. Harsh and Batison from their F-94B Starfire jet interceptor.

To make any sort of case for the balloon explanation, the ‘experts’ had to ignore most of the report, for it described ‘at least a half dozen in formation,’ ‘dim reddish white light coming from two windows,’ ‘head-on, and then would suddenly stop and be pulling off in direction of aircraft,’ ‘200 kts. (275 mph) estimated,’ ‘observed for 15 minutes,’ ‘radar contact 15 minutes after lost sight.’ Balloons? Now, really!

The Air Force liked to call other UFOs ‘possible aircraft,’ a wishy-washy label that was conveniently and quietly switched to ‘aircraft’ in time to make the annual statistics look more impressive. That was what happened to an object reported by one of the most honored airplane designers of all time, Lockheed’s Kelly Johnson, who was responsible for the U-2 spyplane, the SR-71 which has held the world speed record for more than a decade, and many other world-famous aircraft.

Johnson and his wife told the Air Force of seeing a distinct black object which hovered for several minutes, then rose rapidly in a shallow climb. The experience was independently confirmed by Lockheed’s chief aerodynamicist, an engineering test pilot and others who know a lot more about flying machines than the office worker who later  decided they had all seen a ‘possible aircraft.’

But others are quite beyond anyone’s current ability to understand, and yet are treated so casually that one is forced to wonder if the Air Force really cared about anything but placing every case in a compartment. It was almost as if ‘unexplained’ was an explanation.

How else to explain the lack of follow-up on a report by civilian flying instructor Harry Clark, of Nampa, Idaho? He was promptly interrogated by by the Air Force’s own Office of Special Investigations, and his report was declared ‘unexplained.’ But there is no sign that anyone bothered to try to understand it.

Clark told of seeing (July 1949) a tight formation of seven objects, about 1,500 feet from his plane and 500 feet below him. They passed him on the left, turned without banking to cross in front of him, and then went by him on the right at about 500 mph. He was doing about 100 mph in his little Piper Clipper. Clark described them as about 45 feet in span, 20 to 30 feet long and 2 to 5 feet thick; they were delta shaped and light in color except for a 12-foot dark spot at the center rear.

When he first saw them, the outer panels seemed to be oscillating.”

The UFO was black, semi-spherical shaped, 13 to 15 metres in diameter and had several windows that emitted a light yellowish light.

Suddenly the UFO flew away, causing great instability in the airplane. Rodrigues had to execute a difficult manoeuvre to gain control of his Dornier 27 airplane. And some of the instruments in the airplane were affected by the presence of the UFO.

“STIGMATA”

Number Four, Summer 1978
(Project Stigma, Paris, Texas)

Source: Archives For the Unexplained (AFU.se), Norrköping, Sweden

Project Stigma was run by the late animal mutilation researcher Thomas (Tom) R. Adams.

Quote from the newsletter issue:
“A CLOSER LOOK

February

Skagit Co., Washington: It appears that, proportionally, the number of horse mutilations are increasing. In the last week of December, a classic horse mutilation occurred in Salt Lake City, Utah. In early January a prized thoroughbred was killed, but not mutilated, in Carroll Co., Arkansas. Leading up to that event, a notable wave of UFO sightings occurred in Carroll County. Benton County, Arkansas adjoins Carroll Co. on the west (see April, May). The Carroll Co. horse was apparently killed by a single blow to the snout. A veterinary pathologist was impressed by the fact that the killer had to know just how and where to strike the blow once, in order to quickly kill the animal. The Salt Lake City horse, which was mutilated, suffered a similar blow to the skull. Details on the Skagit Co. horse death remain sketchy. An investigator in an adjacent county bas not had much success in getting information from Skagit County authorities.

March and April

Goochland Co., Virginia: Investigators have wondered about the relatively small number of mutilations which have been reported from the southeastern United States, which certainly contain their share of livestock. In 1978, it seems that more reports are beginning to emanate from the South. At least 9 cattle, and perhaps as many as 17, were found ‘dead and mutilated in a bizarre fashion’ on the Virginia State Farm (a state correctional center) near Crozier in a 3-week period in March and April. No incidents occurred outside the State Farm. In fact, the mutilations were discovered in two separate, non-adjoining pastures owned by the State Farm. Autopsies were conducted on some of the animals, but no cause of death could be discerned. Ears and udders, primarily, were the parts excised from the carcasses which, according to Goochland County Sheriff's Captain Mavin Clements, decomposed very rapidly. Reports of UFO sightings and landings occurred from the area around the State Farm during the 3-week period. Several Farm guards reported seeing bright, noiseless, meandering nocturnal lights, some of which appeared to land behind nearby hills. Project Stigma interviewed a witness who lives less than a half-mile from the State Farm. On a late Sunday night or early Monday he observed a white light which descended below a low knoll between his residence and the Farm. The percipient was struck by the clarity and brilliance of the light and the lack of any sound. This occurred ‘during the time’ that the mutilations were being discovered, although it is not known whether any mutilations occurred on that specific night.

A WEEKEND IN APRIL

Two classic, definitive cattle mutilations occurred on the weekend of April 22-23, 1978 - in Natrona County, Wyoming and Rio Arriba County, New Mexico. We can report on these incidents in more detail than most, as they were subject to more scrutiny and examination than is usual.

Natrona County, Wyoming

Rancher Vern Robinett’s 400-lb. yearling heifer had been seen alive and well on Friday, April 21, 1978. A neighbor later reported having seen the animal down sometime on Saturday, the 22nd, but Robinett did not discover the animal until Tuesday, the 25th.

During weeks preceding the mutilation, UFO sightings were numerous north and south of Casper. A deputy reported witnessed UFOs and was able to record their sound on a cassette recorder.

Rio Arriba County, New Mexico

In June of 1976 at least 3 cattle mutilations were reported in northern Rio Arriba County. An interesting and well-documented case occurred in a pasture approx. 12 miles from the town of Dulce. At  that site were numerous circular ‘tracks’ or impressions in the ground, primarily in straight lines, plus a set of three different indentations in a tripod arrangement. For a summary of the event, the reader is directed to the November/December 1977 issue of Beyond Reality Magazine (P.O. Box 428; Nanuet, NY 10954) and the article, ‘Cattle Mutilation: Witchcraft Rituals or Space Invasion’ by Howard and Lovola Burgess. Dulce area residents had reported UFOs, including a sighting on the night of the mutilation. One investigator, while revisiting the site, observed a large black object which glided away just above the ground. Unusual images which were not visible to the naked eye later turned up on photos taken in the area of the mute site. And, excessive radiation was detected within the round (4-inch diameter) indentations.

Manuel Gomez, owner of the cow victimized in June of 1976, has become a ‘favorite’ of the mutilators, with at least 4 o! his cattle falling victim to the siege. Gomez ranches as well as operates a store on the outskirts of Dulce, near his house. The mutilation which occurred late on April 23rd or early on the 24th took place, not at the pasture 12 miles SE of Dulce as in 1976, but in a field less than a mile from the Gomez residence in Dulce. The 11-month-old bull vas seen alive Sunday evening and discovered by Gomez early Monday morning, the 24th. At about 11:00 PM, Sunday night, a Department of Game and Fish officer observed a large orange light on a ridge behind the Gomez property; also, a neighbor reported hearing an apparent helicopter flying low in the area the same night.

The 4-inch tracks were back. The carcass lay in a lane in the middle of the pasture, and down the lane for a considerable distance were the imprints. They "went back and forth a couple of times,’ then stopped about 100 feet from the carcass. Five other bulls and a flock of sheep were in the pasture and unharmed.

Approximately 4 days before the April discovery of the Gomez cow, a helicopter landed near the Gomez store and home. The occupants said they had run out of gas while aiding the State Police in searching for two lost boys. They bought gas from the pump at the Gomez store, paying with a credit card that indicated they were associated with a helicopter rental service in southwestern Colorado. The problem was: the State Police claimed that the chopper was not aiding them in any way.

Aftermath

At presstime, it would seem that no further known mutilation activity has occurred in the Casper, Wyoming area. The same cannot be said for New Mexico. About a week after the Dulce mutilation of April 23rd or 24th, and about 10 miles from town, a cow belonging to an official of the Jicarilla Apache Indian Reservation was found mutilated. It appeared that a belt or harness had been placecl around the animal behind the front lege. Several ‘pod marks’ were found several hundred feet away. It has been theorized once again that the animal was picked up in the area of the indentations, mutilated, and then dropped where it was found. It bas been reported that during that approximate period of time unidentified orange airborne lights were seen in the area.

On May 14, 1978, State Police announced that they were investigating the apparent mutilation of two cows and a calf on the ranch of Julius Ferran near Coyote, New Mexico, in southern Rio Arriba County. There was a report that rains washed away any tracks or ground markings. However, one investigator claims to have photographed peculiar round ‘footprints’ at the site.

Back to the Dulce area – two more mutilations (the ‘usual’ parts taken) were reported there in late May. A front leg was broken on each, no strap or harness marks were visible, and if there were ‘pod marks,’ they had been obliterated by numerous other cattle tracks.

On June 14, 1978, Project Stigma investigators Gary Massey and Tom Adams, while on vacation in southern Colorado, were advised of another mutilation in the Dulce area. Accompanied by Colorado investigators David Perkins and Cari Seawell, we arrived in Dulce to examine the site on Thursday, June 15th. It bas been estimated that the mutilation occurred late Monday, the 12th or early Tuesday morning – which would have been two years to the date since the June 1976 mutilation. Plus, this
latest event transpired in the same pasture, the animal having been found less than 300 yards from where the 1976 cow finally fell. And yes, the owner of the animal was, once again, Manuel Gomez.

There were indentations in the hide of the animal’s legs which suggested the presence of a clamp or similar device. Flies were present on the carcass but it was obvious that other predators must have had better things to do.

A NON-ENCOUNTER

A pilot who grew up in the area around Nara Visa, in northeastern New Mexico. Told Project Stigma of the time in 1975 when he and three friends took infrared cameras in the personal airplane to the Nara Visa vicinity. As livestock mutilations plagued the region, residents had been steadily reporting either unmarked and unidentified helicopters and/or strange meandering nocturnal lights. One night, while the UFOs were being seen in abundance, the foursome took to the air. Their efforts were coordinated with ground observers who could see both the airplane and the UFOs. Those on the ground tried to direct the plane to the area of the strange lights, but the four in the airplane could not see the UFOs at all. They flew around the area for two hours as the frustrated ground observers told them where the lights appeared to be – but the four hapless occupants of the airplane were never able to see the objects/lights.”

Sightings (TV Series):
“UFOS OVER FDR”
(Sci Fi Channel, U.S.A.)

Source: TVUFOFootage (YouTube channel)

This Sightings episode focuses on the many UFO sightings that have occurred over the aircraft carrier USS Franklin D. Roosevelt throughout the years:

The TV report includes a UFO photograph that was taken by a newspaper reporter.

USS FDR carried both conventionally- and nuclear-armed aircraft. And UFOs have been sighted many times near nuclear research facilities, power plants, weapons storage facilities, ICBM weapons sites and aircraft carriers in the United States, UK and Russia (Soviet Union).

USS Franklin D. Roosevelt (Midway class) history:

* USS FDR was commissioned on 27 October 1945.
* 1946: Took part in the first McDonnell XFD-1 Phantom and Lockheed P-80A jets tests.
* From 8 August to 4 October 1946: Was a part of a U.S. Navy force that visited Athens to bolster the government of Greece in the Greek Civil War.
* In 1950: USS FDR became the first carrier to take nuclear weapons to sea. Troops (Operation Magic Carpet).
* In September and October 1952: Participated in Operation Mainbrace, the first major NATO exercise in the North Atlantic.
* During 1954-1956: Was extensively modernised.
* From August 1966 to January 1967: The ship’s only deployment to South East Asia.
* During 1954-1956: Was extensively modernised for second time.
* In the October 1973 Yom Kippur War: Served as a transit 'landing field' for aircraft being delivered to Israel.
* From June 1976 to April 1977: Embarked Marine Attack Squadron 231 (VMA-231) with 14 AV-8A Harrier jets.
* USS FDR was decommissioned on 30 September 1977.

USS Franklin D. Roosevelt took part in the following wars:

Greek Civil War (1944-1949)
Vietnam War (1st period) (1965-1968)

UFO Case Directory (RADCAT):
“RAF Mosquito Pursues Radar Target (BBU)
January 16, 1947
North Sea, 50 miles from Holland”

30 June 2009
(NICAP.org)

The whole UFO case report:
“Fran Ridge:
10:30 p.m. (GMT). RAF pilot of Mosquito pursued unidentified radar target showing efficient controlled evasive action at 22,000 ft speed equal or greater than Mosquito, headed W? towards Norfolk, Eng. (FOIA) This was five months before the Kenneth Arnold sighting and the beginning of the Wave of 1947, followed by the crash at Roswell in early July. The incident was also linked to another ‘X raid’ tracked by radar earlier that same day. An FBI document from July of 1947 quoted the Air Ministry case summary stating that: ‘no explanation has been forthcoming, nor has it been repeated.’ This information was not entirely accurate, because a very similar incident had occurred just 24 hours after the North Sea incident. As a direct result, Fighter Command immediately extended its night radar watch.

Dan Wilson:
At 11:30 at night in the North Sea an RAF Mosquito pilot picked up a strange object on radar 50 miles north of the coast of Holland. The UFO seemed to be taking evasive maneuvers when approached by the fighter aircraft. The UFO was pursued for 30 minutes until over the Norfolk, England coast, at which point the object darted away. (Source: APRO Bulletin, December 1977, p. 7). See report from Project Blue Book files below.

Jan Aldrich:
The U.S. got a full report on this which (Captain Edward) Ruppelt saw and summarized. The summary was in Hynek’s files now at CUFOS, Operation Charlie, which Martin Shough and Dave Clarke dug out of the UK archives. This impressive case involves more than one incident, and the British archives is missing some information. Apparently the Americans got a report on the incident including information that is now missing from the UK archives.”

“STIGMATA”

Number Six, Spring-Summer 1979
(Project Stigma, Paris, Texas)

Source: Archives For the Unexplained (AFU.se), Norrköping, Sweden

Project Stigma was run by the late animal mutilation researcher Thomas (Tom) R. Adams.

Quote from the newsletter issue:
“HELICOPTERS – A SPECIAL REPORT

Project Stigma is currently preparing a special report to consist largely of a catalog of reports ot unidentified helicopters at or near mutilation sites. We have knowledge of over 200 such sightings and we are seeking data regarding those which have yet to be reported. For those who have doubted the likelihood of a link between ‘mystery choppers’ and the ‘mystery choppings’, the report will serve to convincingly illuminate the connection. We would appreciate hearing whether our readers would prefer an 8½″  X 11″ report (or an 8½ X 11 STIGMATA?) rather than the current 8½″ X 7″ size. Watch for an announcement regarding the helicopter report and catalog in the upcoming STIGMATA #7.

A CLOSER LOOK

1977 - October

Washington - Snohomish county: We are indebted to Jacob Davidson of Seattle for providing us with a series of consistently fine reports by investigator Jerry Phillips of Everett, Washington. Phillips interviewed rancher and horseman Jack Henning regarding the mutilation of one of his colts.

A vet, Dr. John Carr, was called to the scene and he declared that the colt died from loss of blood via some unknown procedure. There was no blood on the ground and only a small amount in the heart and chest cavity. There were no tracks or signs in the 3-inch grass in the area. It looked ‘as though the colt had been dropped out of the air’. In the same field, 30 to 40 feet of electric fence was down, with two fence posts snapped off at the base. There were no tracks around the fence. Henning left the carcass in the field so he could keep an eye on it. Then, (quoting from Phillips’ report): On the second day a cobweb-like material developed over the open wound. Later the second day a large German shepherd dog was observed coming into the field. When he spotted the dead animal he stopped, smelled the air, made a circle around it and continued on its way. The third day, a coyote which had been seen in the area several times in previous months, came into the field, circled the animal several times, then began eating on the head and neck. He would not go near the rear of the horse. Mr. Henning went out to have a look and found plenty of evidence on the ground and in the grass to show where the coyote had dug his paws in when pulling at the neck hide.....Mr. Henning brought the mare and her other colt out and tried to get them near the dead colt. Neither one would come within 50 feet of it. He tried laying hay next to it and they still would not approach it. Mr. Henning has two labrador dogs…..he turned them loose to see what they would do. They circled the animal, but would not get within 20 feet of it.

Henning told Phillips that he had been working with the surviving colt before the killing and she was fairly gentle. After the mutilation she stood in the barn and quivered. Henning had difficulty even approaching her for a week. The mare was very possessive and protective of her colts, and she would become very upset if anyone even walked between them. There was no evidence that she tried to interfere when the victim colt was in danger that morning. Afterward, ‘she acted as if the colt had never existed’.

1978 – April through August

Missouri – Lincoln County: By now we assume that most readers of this publication are aware of the reports of livestock mutilations, UFO and unidentified helicopter sightings, anomalous odors (and even a June encounter with a 4-ft.-tall ‘ape’) – all in Lincoln County (with some ‘spillover’ into adjoining counties), and especially around the community of Elsberry.

These events received a relatively substantial amount of nationwide publicity. We wanted to refer interested readers to a couple of published accounts regarding these incidents:

International UFO Reporter (1609 Sherman Ave., Suite 207; Evanston, Illinois 60201 – $12.00 per year). This publication and its editors (Dr. J. Allen Hynek and Allen Rendry) are allied with the Center for UFO Studies (CUFOS). The August 1978 issue of the IUR features an account of a UFO sighting in the Elsberry area (p. 3) and a separate article on the UFO and mutilation activity there throughout the summer. The latter article labors to downplay both the UFO activity and the mutilations, not to mention any possible ‘link’ between them. We have been aware of CUFOS’ grimly opaque attitude toward the mutilation phenomenon. A CUFOS staff member once advised one of their many volunteer investigators scattered across the country not to ‘bring cattle mutilations into the picture’. The staffer claims, in his letter to the investigator, that ‘this is a personal opinion’, then insolently directs the investigator to ‘be careful not to relate UFOs with mutilations, when you are speaking as a Center representative, before you have consulted the Center about its opinion in this matter’. We have become weary (and wary) of attempts to refute the validity of classic mutilations (and some of the peripheral phenomena often associated with them) by referring to bits of information excised from the total body of data (of course, we recognize the possibility that CUFOS may simply be the victim of bad information and/or indifferent investigation). The UFO/mutilation link remains valid circumstantially. Beyond that, it cannot be proven or disproven. Meanwhile, we heartily recommend objectivity between and among mature and consenting adults.

Pursuit (R.F.D. 5 – Gales Ferry, CT 06335 – subscription/membership for one year is $10.00; Pursuit is the journal of the Society for the Investigation of the Unexplained). ‘Mutilations: The Elsberry Enigma’ by editors R. Martin Wolf and Steven N. Mayne appears in the Winter 1979 edition. This is more like it: a simple recounting of the evidence, anecdotal and otherwise, gathered by the authors during their investigation in the Elsberry area. And where conclusions are not warranted, they are not drawn. The article includes a chronological listing of extramundane events (beginning with a mutilation in 1975) and details on diverse Fortean occurrences. The interesting thing is, Project Stigma has since become aware of many other unusual events in the Lincoln County area which are not recounted in the Pursuit article, thanks primarily to the investigations of David Perkins, Cari Seawell and Bill McIntyre. There is more to be heard, and read, regarding the Lincoln County happenings.

1978 - December

South Carolina - Orangeburg County: Around 8:00 PM on Wednesday, December 6th, farmer Richard Fanning, accompanied by his wife and another couple, drove out to feed Fanning’s several hundred hogs. As they approached the bog pen, all four saw a circle of light along with four smaller lights (two red, two green) hovering over nearby treetops. The four were frightened by the noiseless apparitions and decided that the hogs could be fed later. As the witnesses drove from the scene, they were followed by the large white light and the red and green lights for about 300 yards. Suddenly ail five lights returned to hover over the area of the hog pen. After three or four minutes, all of the lights went out.

Fanning did not return to feed the hogs until Friday morning, December 8th. Be found one hog ‘standing up dead. I kicked him and he fell over’. Fanning told reporter Roberta G. Boman of the Times and Democrat (Orangeburg, SC) that a second dead hog lay nearby with its jawbone removed. He told Boman that ‘the body was sort of like sponge, with all the weight gone, kind of like jelly (Fanning said the hog, normally weighing 200 lbs., weighed no more than approximately 50 pounds). In my opinion, no animal got that hog.’

Fanning went on to exclaim that ‘I was scared, and I'm not scared of many things. I go hunting and fishing a lot. Never seen anything like it. It’s the weirdest thing I’ve ever seen in my life. I’m an outdoorsman, and I wouldn’t have said nothing unless the other three people saw it too.’ (Our thanks to Leonard Stringfield for advising us of the Fanning case.)

MUTES IN THE MEDIA

*** Sandler International Films of Hollywood, California has been gathering new material to be used in updating ‘UFOs Past, Present and Future’, a documentary film which was originally released in the mid-1970’s. The Sandler crew has filmed interviews in Colorado and New Mexico as part of a segment on animal mutilations to be included in the new film. It is understood at this writing that the film is to be distributed via syndication to television stations across the country, beginning in the fall of 1979. The ‘on-camera spokesman’ or narrator for the new film is Dr. Jacques Vallee, author of the controversial new book, Messengers of Deception (see STIGMATA #7).

*** At press time, ABC-TV News has, for several weeks, been filming an investigative report on animal mutilations, to be aired (possibly in two parts) on the ‘20-20’ news-feature program in the early summer (‘20-20’ will apparently be seen weekly on Thursday nights during the summer). Project Stigma investigators conferred with correspondent Dave Marash and his crew in early May, and we were impressed with their sincerity and in-depth approach. Assuming the story is aired, watch for impressive eye-witness accounts of UFOs and mystery helicopters in mutilation-prone areas.”
