UFO Report:
“The 1947 UFO Sighting Wave –
A Comprehensive Chronological
Summary of the Period”

Created: 14 December 2005
Updated: 12 November 2018
(NICAP.org)

Quote from the UFO report:
“This 26 page chrono involves a number of people. First of all, I want to thank Ted Bloecher. His 1967 work, the entire updated version, is available on the NICAP site (See below). Over a thousand incidents, many of which are included in the chronology below, are listed in the charts from ‘The Report on the UFO Wave of 1947’ (Reference 1).  We also wish to thank Wendy Connors and Mike Hall for allowing us to post their great book, ‘Alfred Loedding and the Great Flying Saucer Wave of 1947’. No 1947 work would be complete without the aid of Jan Aldrich of Project 1947. I want to thank all the members of the A-Team who made this possible. To view the 1947 sightings listed by Blue Book click here. Be sure to click on and read the two great books below. Finally, I want thank Loren Gross for thoughtfully and diligently collecting data many years ago for his UFO Histories and supplemental notes, in particular here the year 1947. And a big thanks to CUFOS and Mary Castnor for housing them on the CUFOS site.

UFO Case Directory (Distant Encounters):
“Round 3' Aluminum Object At Great Speed
July 11, 1947
Elmendorf Air Force Base, Anchorage, Alaska”

(NICAP.org)

The whole UFO case report:
Brad Sparks:
July 11, 1947. Elmendorf Air Base, Anchorage, Alaska (BBU)
11:00 a.m. (AHST). AAF Col. Bruce H. Perry and Major William E. Geyser, 59th AACS Group, saw a round 2-3 ft or 10 ft aluminum or silver-metallic spherical object travel at great speed to the S at estimated altitude of 3,000 to 4,000 ft, below scattered clouds at 10,000 ft. (Sparks; Lara Elliott/NICAP website; FBI files; BB files;  McDonald list; FOIA; Saunders/FUFOR Index) 15-20 secs 2 witnesses 1/2 Full Moon

Supplemental Notes:
Lara Elliott's recent contribution (*) supplies the clues to finally lay to rest a long-standing date confusion. This incident occurred on July 11, 1947, proven by Dan Wilson who had found a teletype sent July 12, 1947, at 0047Z, in the Project SIGN microfilm collection at BBArchive, reporting it as occurring at 2100Z on July 11. (**) Another entry in the Chrono, Sept. 17, 1947, is now resolved as a mistake, a duplicate of the July 11, 1947, case and needs to be removed.  The precursor to Project SIGN, within AMC T-2 Technical Intelligence Division, mistakenly assigned a Sept 17 date to the identical (July 11) case data back in 1947. As we can see now from Lara's work, undated copies of the case floated around to the various intelligence agencies such as the FBI (and even within the AAF) and would get assigned bogus dates.”

NICAP.org presents U.S. government (U.S. Air Force) documents that pertain to the UFO case.

Wikipedia article: “Elmendorf Air Force Base”:

Quote from the Wikipedia article:
“Elmendorf Air Force Base (IATA: EDF, ICAO: PAED, FAA LID: EDF) is a United States military facility in Anchorage, the largest city in Alaska. Originally known as Elmendorf Field, it became Elmendorf Air Force Base after World War II, and in 2010 it merged with nearby Fort Richardson to form Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson.”

UFO Case Directory:
“Category 1, Distant Encounters
Silvery Disc Seen Through Theodolite
April 1947
Richmond, Virginia”

(NICAP.org)

The whole UFO case report:
Brad Sparks:
April 1947; Richmond, Virginia (BBU)
11 a.m. (EST). Meteorologist Minczewski saw a silvery disc through a theodolite while tracking a pibal weather balloon, traveling E to W at less than 15,000 ft, appeared larger than the balloon. (McDonald 1968; FOIA; FUFOR Index)

Fran Ridge:
There is a document which reads: "... Mr. Walter Minezewski has observed this strange metallic disc on three occasions through the theodolite while making his pibal observation during the last six months (November, 1946 - April, 1947)" **.  In the other document:  "There  is no astronomical explanation for this Incident, which, however,  deserves considerable attention, because of the experience of the observers ana the fact that the observation was made through a theodolite and that conparison could be made with a pibal balloon. The observers had, therefore, a good estimate of altitude, of relative size, and of speed  much more reliable than those given in most reports. This investigator would like to recommend that these and other pibal observers be quizzed as to other possible un-reported sightings." *

James McDonald:
Here was a pre-Arnold sighting never reported officially. It was quite clearly not an observation of "new American military vehicles," nor can one readily square this with any phenomenon of atmospheric physics or astronomy. It is a UFO observation, and a rather interesting one. Bloecher's search has led to several other pre-Arnold 1947 sightings. Just a matter of days before this writing, I spoke on the telephone with Walter A. Minczewski, the U. S. Weather Bureau observer whose April, 1947, theodolite-tracking case is cited in the text. Minczewski emphasized that he had never reported it to other than his Weather Bureau superiors and hence was surprised to be called about it twenty years later. Yet his recollection of the details of the whitish disc-like object he had tracked one clear morning in Richmond, Virginia, was still distinct in his mind.”

The UFO incident occurred on 1 April 1947, according to the book, UFOs and Government: A Historical Inquiry.

NICAP.org presents a U.S. government (U.S. Air Force) document that pertains to the UFO case.

U.S. Government UFO Document:
“FLYING DISCS”

30 July 1947
(U.S. Army Air Forces, Washington, D.C.)

Source: NICAP.org

Text by NICAP.org:
“The following pages are a portion of Colonel (George) Garrett’s Estimate Report. This is a rough draft of the report. The finalized version has not been located. Page 8 mentions ‘lack of topside inquiries, when compared to the prompt and demanding inquiries  that have originated topside upon former events, give more than ordinary weight to the possibility that this is a domestic project, about which the President, etc. know.’ ”

In July 1947, George Garrett was a Lieutenant Colonel in the Army Air Forces Intelligence’s Collections Division in the Pentagon. Garrett was the main assistant to the Division’s chief, Colonel Robert Taylor, according to the book, UFOs and Government: A Historical Inquiry (Page 36).
