UFO News Article:
“Flight crew, controller report UFO”

30 December 1986
(The Milwaukee Journal, Wisconsin)

The article reports on the 17 November 1986 Japan Airlines (JAL) Flight 1628 UFO incident over North East Alaska.

The UFO incident occurred at 5:19 p.m. (18 November, at 2:19 UTC), according to a Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) document (files.afu.se).

Quote from the article:
“FAA (Federal Aviation Administration) spokesman Paul Steucke said there was no other air traffic along the same little-traveled route that night. Steucke also noted that the FAA’s electronically recorded radar data did not support the UFO sighting.

But the existence of an unidentified object was confirmed by a report from the flight controller in charge of JAL 1628. Steucke said the controller, who was not named, had two years’ experience.

During the flight, the controller asked Terauchi to identify the craft and then wrote, ‘He could not identify but reported white and yellow strobes.’ The lighting was not a normal aircraft marking pattern, the crew said.

In his one page report, the controller said he repeatedly saw another object on radar staying near the JAL jet despite FAA-approved turns and altitude changes. The object was as close as
5 miles, the controller wrote.”

UFO News Article:
“Saucers Are Something:
3 Radar Sets Report Identical Sightings”

29 July 1952
(Chester Times, Pennsylvania)

Source: NewspaperArchive.com

Quote from the article:
“These are the facts:

Beginning shortly after midnight [20 July 1952], and continuing until dawn, eight experienced CAA radar operators and technicians, manning the air route traffic control center in [hangar] No. 6 at National Airport, tracked from seven to ten unidentifiable and mysterious objects performing strange gyrations in the skies in a 30-mile radius above Washington.

Harry G. Barnes, who has been with CAA for nine years, mostly in radar work, was in charge of the group. After making sure that the objects were not known aircraft and that the radar was operating perfectly, he checked his findings with the radar operators in the control tower. They instantly confirmed what he saw, and continued to do so. The two radars are complete separate units.

Later the radar at nearby Andrews Air Force [Base] also confirmed the sightings.

When the center radar showed one of the unidentified objects in a low position in the northwest sky, the operators in the tower were able to see it. One of them, Howard Cocklin, who has been with CAA for five years, describes it:

‘It was a good-sized light, yellow to orange in color. At first it looked like a great big star. Then it began to move in a manner which made you realize it couldn’t be a star. There was no unusual high speed about its movements and at times it seemed to hover. We could see it moving around like that for about 15 minutes. It just disappeared into the northwest sky.’

There are no windows in the center Barnes was operating. None of the eight men could leave to go outside to try to check their own radar sightings visually.

As is normal at that time air traffic was very light. But at the first opportunity an operator in Barnes’ office contacted Capital Airlines pilot Capt. S. C. Pierman shortly after he took off and asked him to look for the objects.

For about 14 minutes, Pierman was in direct, two-way communication with Barnes. While he was within radar range, Pierman was able to see six objects which showed up on the path indicated by the center’s radar. Pierman’s sightings reported to Barnes coincided exactly with the radar sightings, Barnes reports.

Pierman is a 17-year veteran of commercial flying and is described by Capital Airlines officials as very level-headed and ‘taciturn.’ After he landed in Detroit Pierman had this to say about the sightings:

‘In my years of flying I’ve seen a lot of falling or shooting stars—whatever you call them—but these were much faster than anything like that I’ve ever seen. They were moving too fast for that. They were about the same size as the brighter stars. And they were much higher than our 6000-foot altitude. I couldn’t estimate the speed accurately. Please remember I didn’t speak of them as flying saucers—only very fast moving lights.’

Charles Wheaton, first officer on the flight with Pierman, a veteran of 12 years of flying confirms Pierman’s sightings and adds:

‘Before the other night, I always discounted alleged flying saucers as atmospheric phenomenon. But now I feel I have actually seen some active strange objects which defy explanation.’

Another Capital Airlines pilot also reported seeing a light off his wing, which showed up in that position on the radar scope. Other pilots in the air that night, Barnes reveals, appeared to be reluctant to discuss the subject with him on the radio.”

In the post, “UFO Report (In Book Chapter)” (7 May 2020)
(see below link), I wrote the following:
The book, The UFO Evidence (by the National Investigations Committee on Aerial Phenomena (NICAP)) (1964), contains an excellent report (Page 76) on the radar UFO evidence/cases.

Paragraphs 2, 3 and 4, under “RADAR: THEORY & FACT,” show that the Civil Aeronautics Administration (CAA) was involved in outright deception regarding the 1952 Washington, D.C., UFO incidents.

The CAA concluded (see below link) that the Washington, D.C., UFO incidents were “ground returns caused by reflection phenomena closely connected with the temperature inversions in the lower atmosphere.”

The aviation agency only took into account the August 14/15 and August 15/16 UFO incidents. These incidents lacked visual UFO sightings and the speeds that were recorded were extremely slow (around 24-70 miles per hour) and were likely radar “angels.”

Contrast that to the July sightings – which involved unknown objects which were tracked flying at high speeds and on top of that were observed visually by pilots exactly at the place where radar indicated the objects to be.

Federal Aviation Administration (FAA)
Audio Recording:
UFO Sighting by America West Airlines Flight 564,
25 May 1995, 10:30 p.m.

Comment by the audio source:
“At approximately 10:30 p.m. on May 25, 1995, Capt. Gene Tollefson and First Officer John J. Waller, piloting America West Airlines Flight 564 from Tampa, Florida, to Las Vegas, Nevada saw a huge dark wingless object with a row of bright white lights near America West Airlines Flight 564. The UFO sighting occurred over Tucumcari, New Mexico. The silhouette of this object was only visible when lit by nearby flashes of a thunderstorm. The pilots immediately contacted the Albuquerque FAA Air Route Traffic Control Center in an attempt to identify the object. The pilots describe the object to the control center as being over 400 ft long. The entire incident was recorded by the FAA.”

Excerpts from this audio recording have been presented in at least one UFO documentary film:

UFO Paper:
“Estimating Flight Characteristics of
Anomalous Unidentified Aerial Vehicles”

Published: 25 September 2019
By Kevin H. Knuth, Robert M. Powell and Peter A. Reali
(Scientific Coalition for UAP Studies (SCU), U.S.A.)

The paper investigates three UFO incidents: the 9 February 1951 Lieutenant Graham Bethune, U.S. Navy (off Newfoundland, Canada) (according to NICAP.org), 17 November 1986 North East Alaska (Japan Airlines (JAL) Flight 1628) and 14 November 2004 (USS Nimitz) Tic Tac cases.

Quote from the 11 October 2019 De Void (Billy Cox) article,
“Let’s see them equations”:
“ ‘Flight Characteristics’ takes three incidents – the Tic Tac, a 1951 sighting by Navy Lt. Graham Bethune near Nova Scotia, the 1986 Japan Air Lines Flight 1628 – and ties them together with these threads: ‘multiple professional witnesses observing the UAV in multiple modalities (including sight, radar, infrared imaging, etc.),’ in which each incident produces ‘sufficient information to estimate kinetic qualities such as speeds and accelerations.’

‘Assuming that any one of these cases we examine is based on accurate reports,’ they add, ‘we show that the UAVs exhibit unreasonably high accelerations ranging from 100 g to well over 5,000 g.’ Not very sporting odds for a dogfight. The authors tell readers that ‘humans can endure up to 45 g for 0.044 seconds with no injurious or debilitating effects.’ Meaning: attempt those moves and you’re soup in a can.”

UFO Case Report:
“Ham Radio Operator Hears
American Airlines Pilot Report UFO.”

By William Puckett (Montana State MUFON Director),
6 February 2016
(UFOs Northwest, Helena, Montana)

Quote from the UFO case report:
“Location of Sighting: Near Nephi, Utah
Date of Sighting: January 14, 2016
Time of Sighting: Between 12:12 and 12:13 AM MST

Background: This case was reported to me by Erica Lukes who is the director of MUFON for the state of Utah. She knows a radio show host (Pat Daniels) who was scanning communications between aircraft and the FAA shortly after midnight on January 14, 2016. He heard a conversation between an airline pilot and Air Route Traffic Control.

The pilot reported seeing an extremely large bright object that he estimated a mile wide to his right. The air traffic controller told him that he was looking in the direction of Nephi, Utah. Apparently the air traffic controller told the pilot that the object was not detected on radar. The object appeared to keep pace with the aircraft.

A Freedom of Information (FOIA) request was written to the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). About six weeks later we received a response to the FOIA. The response consisted of radar returns, voice tapes and tower logs. The FAA is to be commended for their full and timely response to our request.

Research showed that the aircraft was American Airlines Flight Number 434 which was enroute from San Francisco, CA to Philadelphia, PA. The actual sighting time was between 12:12 and 12:13 AM MST on January 14, 2016. We were able to find segments of the conversation on the Air Traffic Control archives website, but much of conversation was deleted. One could hear the controller telling the pilot that Nephi, Utah was off to his right and the pilot acknowledging the transmission. However, the UFO report was not on the tape. The ham radio operator did not record the conversation so the ‘UFO report’ could not be heard. He heard the conversation on the frequency of 127.95 mhz.

Update: March 4, 2016. The voice tape obtained from the FAA (see above) does fill in some of the transmission missing from the tape from the Air Traffic Control archives website. The only thing not included from the original transmission was the estimated size of the object and the and the conversation where the FAA said that the object was not detected on radar. The airline crew described the object as a large orange square.

An animation was constructed for each revolution of the radar (12 seconds). The radar animation frames are speeded up to one second/revolution in the animation. (Animation follows voice tape above.) The animation shows 1 to 3 returns for each revolution of the radar. There are a few rotations where no returns are detected. This is strange. There is no detected conventional movement and the returns vary from 0 to 3 over the 7 minute period. The time period is from 12:08 to 12:15 AM MST which is a few minutes before and after the pilot reported the strange object. One wonders if the object was moving erratically and perhaps was rotating exposing more or less radar cross sectional area resulting in no detection or a different number of returns? The object could have been large considering this type of ‘radar signature?’

A visual trace of the FAA tape is shown in Figure 1. Pat Daniels (ham radio operator) stated in a radio interview that the aircraft radioed the FAA and inquired whether radar showed anything in the area of their sighting. This conversation was around a minute before the conversation where the FAA told the crew that the town to the right was Nephi, Utah. There was some conversation in this time frame. (See annotation in Figure 1.) However, the conversation has been deleted and only a second or two not ‘redacted.’ The question is why did the FAA redact this conversation? According to Pat Daniels the crew did not announce their flight number when they first sighted the object. So perhaps the FAA didn’t include it for that reason. Or perhaps they did not want the public to hear the conversation? In the recorded conversation starting just after 12:12 AM the crew was talking about their sighting and the FAA responded ‘you mean to the right.’ How did they know that? They knew because they had it on radar.”
