UFO Report:
“The 1961 UFO Chronology”

Created: 6 April 2006
Updated: 7 May 2017
(NICAP.org)

Quote from the report:
“… but this was a year for nuclear connections and incidents involving missile bases. A lot of the incidents themselves do not have active links as yet. Blue Book microfilms are only processed to mid-1952, so it will be some time before we can accomplish that goal. However, this is a comprehensive list for 1961 and will also suffice as a good work and checklist for our team. With the help of William Wise (Project Blue Book Archive), and Dan Wilson (archive researcher), the task becomes much easier. But without Brad Sparks’ updated list, the Comprehensive Catalog of Project Blue Book Unknowns, the entire project would have been impossible. And our thanks also go to Jean Waskiewicz who created the online NICAP DBase (NSID) that helped make it possible to link from the cases to the reports themselves. ‘UFOE’ is the NICAP publication, The UFO Evidence (Richard Hall, 1964). Cat. 3 incidents are E-M cases.

U.S. Air Force Guidance Collection Letter No.4, originally classified Confidential, describes and provides guidance for project Moon Dust reporting. Several items of interest appear in the document: classification level of Moon Dust Alerts and reports, focus of Moon Dust on ‘foreign earth satellite vehicles,’ and destination agencies for Moon Dust reports among them. (CUFON)

May 1961
Joint statement by 21 American Scientists released by NICAP. Calls for open investigation of UFOs without secrecy, the need for a more thorough investigation shown by circumstantial evidence. States the Air Force should have more straightforward information policy, specifically to give out all facts on major UFO sightings.

May 22, 1961; Tyndall AFB, Florida (BBU 7417)
4:30 p.m. Mrs. A. J. Jones and Mrs. R. F. Davis saw big silver-dollar disc hover and revolve, then suddenly disappear. (Berliner)

Aug. 4,1961
Letter to NICAP member from Rep. Thomas W. Downing: ‘The Bureau manager (of Newsweek) informs me that his information indicates that an investigation of the UFO phenomenon is being contemplated by the Science and Astronautics Committee. The information that I was provided indicates that Congressman Joseph E. Karth of Minnesota may serve as Chairman of the three-man Subcommittee.’ (See NICAP UFOE, Section XIII)

Nov. 1, 1961; SETI_Conference
On this date at Green Bank, W. Va. Government (National Academy of Sciences) sponsored secret discussions on space life, possibility of communicating with other worlds. This discussion was alluded to in the New York Times, February 4, 1962.”

June 2, 1961; Tampa, Florida
At 8:06 p.m. local time, two civilian witnesses, one a retired USN Commander, saw a star-like object, bluish red changing to white, high in the sky on a  SE course of approximately 140 degrees from Tampa. This object or a similar object had been seen nightly on about the same flight path. The 660th Radar Station was called to check on the UFO and they reported a target on their height finder radar bearing 055 at 34,000 feet. Target moved up and down and remained in the same relative position. This object was still on the radar scope 5 June 61 and an F-102 was scrambled on the target. The aircraft reported contact but experienced ECM trouble and could not complete intercept due to jamming. Additional witnesses to the object were two tower operators of the 1928th AACS Det., MacDill AFB. An airman of the 660th AC&W Squadron also sighted the object. (Dan Wilson)”

TV UFO Footage:
UFO Footage Recorded during the Filming of the
War Movie, ‘Sniper’s Ridge’, Unknown Date, Daytime

The movie was broadcasted by the U.S. American Movie Classic (AMC) Cable Channel on 18 March 2004:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AVWhGEXdvzY

The unknown object seems to be oval shaped.

This Korean War movie was produced by Twentieth Century Fox. The movie was released in February 1961 (U.S.).

The UFO footage was recorded near Bakersfield, California, according to Ed Sherwood, the video source,

And the UFO footage must likely have been recorded either in 1960 or in early 1961, since the movie was released in February 1961.

Wikipedia article: “Winnemucca Air Force Station”:

Quote from the Wikipedia article:
“Winnemucca Air Force Station (ADC ID: M-127, NORAD ID: Z-127) is a closed United States Air Force General Surveillance Radar station. It is located 3.1 miles (5.0 km) north-northwest of Winnemucca, Nevada. It was closed in 1968.

History

The station was activated on 8 June 1955 after the 658th Aircraft Control and Warning Squadron was moved to the new station on 1 February 1956 by the 28th Air Division. Operational status was finally achieved by the 658th AC&W Squadron in 1956. The site used an AN/FPS-3 radar, and initially the station functioned as a Ground-Control Intercept (GCI) and warning station. As a GCI station, the squadron's role was to guide interceptor aircraft toward unidentified intruders picked up on the unit's radar scopes.
By 1959 this radar had been joined by a pair of AN/FPS-6B height-finder radars. In 1960 the AN/FPS-3 was replaced by an AN/FPS-20 search set. At the end of 1961 this search set had been upgraded into an AN/FPS-66. During 1961 Winnemucca AFS joined the Semi Automatic Ground Environment (SAGE) system, initially feeding data to DC-21 at Stead AFB, Nevada. After joining, the squadron was re-designated as the 658th Radar Squadron (SAGE) on 1 March 1961. The radar squadron provided information 24/7 the SAGE Direction Center where it was analyzed to determine range, direction altitude speed and whether or not aircraft were friendly or hostile.”

USO Case Report:
“Report # 243
11-14-1961
CASE OF THE SPEEDY SUBMARINE”

(Water UFO (waterufo.net), Claymont, Delaware)

The whole USO case report:
“Here’s the kind of mystery that has turned up several times in recent years. The report just reached us although the incident occurred Tuesday, November 14, 1961.

Australian and New Zealand warships were conducting Navy exercises off Sydney Heads when they detected and pursued a large underwater object that interrupted the maneuvers.

There was no visual sighting of the object, but Senator Gorton, the Minister for the Navy, said it could have been an ocean-going submarine. If so, ‘the speed and ease with which the mystery craft eluded the fleet suggests it was nuclear-powered,’ the Sydney Sun stated.

But suppose it wasn't a nuclear-powered submarine? All the Navy would say officially is that it was an ‘unidentified object.’ Contact was soon lost. Neither U.S. nor British submarines were in the area at the time.

U.S. Government UFO Document:
“PROJECT 10073 RECORD CARD:
DATE: 2 Jun 61/
LOCATION: Tampa, Florida”

(Project Blue Book, U.S. Air Force, Washington, D.C.)

Source: NICAP.org

Quote from the document:
“Star-like object sighted on course of 140 deg from Tampa. Color bluish red changing to white. About the size of a star but only brighter. Altitude very high. Object picked up on Radar with a bearing of 055 deg at 34,000 ft. Moved up and down but maintained same relative position.

Radar and visual targets were different locations and the witness was requested to send additional information. No reply to this request. Speculation on the limited data might indicate that the object viewed visually was an a/c, but there is no confirming data. No attempt is made to determine the radar sighting. In view of the limited data the case is listed as insufficient data.”

NICAP.org also presents the other documents that pertain to the case.

UFO News Article:
“HAFB Checking –
‘Flying Saucer’ Observed Over Valley”

3 October 1961
(Deseret News/Salt Lake Telegram, Salt Lake City, Utah)

Waldo J. Harris, a civilian pilot, and seven other persons witnesses sighted a disk shaped UFO over the Utah Central Airport, Granger, Utah (now known as West Valley City), a suburb of Salt Lake City, on 2 October 1961, according to the article:

Quote from the article:
“Air Force officials Tuesday were investigating reports by at least eight observers, including a veteran pilot, that a ‘flying saucer’ was seen hovering over the southern Salt Lake Valley Monday.

Investigation teams from Hill Air Force Base Monday questioned the observers, including pilot Waldo J. Harris, 531 Garfield Ave. (1831 South), who was the first to sight the unidentified object.

Mr. Harris was preparing to take off on a routine flight Monday shortly before noon from Utah Central Airport, 3200 W. 2100 South, when he saw the object south of the field.

Harris said he was about five miles from the disc when he first sighted it and attempted to close in on the object.

‘When I got about three miles from the object, it suddenly moved upward like an elevator and began to move south.’

The object had no visible portholes or exhaust smoke.

It was flying at about 6,500 to 7,000 feet, Mr. Harris told HAFB security officers.”
