“Flying saucers which hovered over the Great Falls area and then took off at ‘a tremendous rate of speed,’ were reported Tuesday [29 July 1952] by a sergeant at the Great Falls Air Force Base.

Sgt. Charles Boden said he was listening to a direct communications system with McChord Air Force Base in Washington and learned that saucers were sighted over that Air Force Base ‘heading toward Great Falls.’ Boden said he immediately began scanning the skies, about 2:30 p.m. M.S.T.

Objects Sighted 

About four and a half minutes after hearing the McChord report, he said he sighted the objects. He reported that two of the saucers appeared stationary at first, then another came ‘whipping going West’ and the two stationary objects then appeared to take off, following the third.

(A McChord spokesman said Tuesday night there were several flaws in Boden’s story. He denied there had been any conversation between McChord and Great Falls bases about 2:30 p.m. concerning flying saucers over McChord. And also pointed out that saucers would not be ‘going west,’ as Boden reported, if they were traveling from McChord, in Washington, state, to Great Falls.)

Contradiction?

(‘I can say categorically we logged no unusual sightings over McChord this afternoon,’ the spokesman declared. ‘Two unusual objects at high altitude and Montana traveling at great speed were sighted in the morning, but a check showed definitely they were jets from our own base.’)

Later in the afternoon Boden said he sighted four traveling in the opposite direction. He described the objects as circular in shape and not thick and added they gave off no sound or left no vapor trails.

If the saucers over McChord and the ones Boden reported were the same, a rough estimate of the speed would be 3,360 miles an hour.

Other persons in Great Falls also said they saw saucers.”

Air Defense Command

Great Falls (later Malmstrom AFB) played a major aerial defense role in North American air defense mission. Although the base was not assigned to Air Defense Command, the attached 29th Air Division was activated at Great Falls AFB in early 1950, bringing with them command and control authority of fighter interceptor squadrons, an aircraft control and warning squadron, and ground observer detachments in Montana, Idaho, Wyoming, and parts of Nevada, Utah, and Colorado as part of the Air Defense Command Western Air Defense Force. The 29th Fighter Interceptor Squadron was activated in 1953 and remained at Malmstrom until 1968, initially flying F-94C Starfire and later F-101 Voodoo interceptors.[3][9]

Great Falls was reassigned to the Central Air Defense Force at Richards-Gebaur Air Force Base in 1953. The 29th Air Division’s area of responsibility changed to include Montana, North and South Dakota and Nebraska. The 29th supervised the training of its units, and participated in numerous training exercises. On 1 July 1961, the 29th AD was relocated to Richards Gebaur AFB, Missouri.[10]

By 1954, several aircraft control and warning (radar) squadrons had been formed at the base. The 903d Aircraft Control and Warning Squadron was one of them, and operated an AN/TPS-1D (termed a ‘gap-filler’). This radar was used probably for training purposes. The 903rd AC&W Squadron subsequently relocated to Gettysburg AFS, South Dakota.

In 1957, under the control of the 801st Aircraft Control and Warning Squadron, the Malmstrom AFB radar station became operational with AN/FPS-20 search and AN/FPS-6 height-finder radars. A second AN/FPS-6 series height-finder radar was added in 1960, and subsequently was upgraded to an AN/FPS-90 set. In 1959 Malmstrom was performing air-traffic-control duties for the FAA, and joined the Semi Automatic Ground Environment (SAGE) system on 1 March 1961, the squadron being redesignated as the 801st Radar Squadron (SAGE). In 1964 Malmstrom received an AN/FPS-24 search radar, replacing the AN/FPS-20.”

UFO News Article: “Pilots Ordered to Shoot Down ‘Saucers’ in Range”

“The Air Force disclosed today that jet pilots are under orders to maintain nationwide 24-hour ‘alert’ against ‘flying saucers’ and to shoot them down if possible.

The Air Force expressed the belief the unidentified flying objects and not a threat to the United States and stated also they are not a secret U.S. military development.

It added, however, that jet pilots are under standing orders to pursue all unidentified flying objects, especially and eastern seaboard, and if necessary, force them to land. The alert is applicable to ‘flying saucers.’

The Air Force admitted, however, that no jet pilot has yet gotten close enough to take a shot at a ‘flying saucer.’ One pilot estimated that he was within five miles of a mysterious light over Washington last weekend, but the light disappeared when he tried to draw close.

The Pentagon issued a statement in an effort to quell public excitement over the latest rash of mysterious objects sighted in the skies.

The USAF insisted that preliminary investigation, including hot aerial pursuit of the mysterious ‘discs,’ indicates that the latest saucer fleet does not constitute a ‘threat’ to this country.

Air Force headquarters stated:

‘During the past few years, more than 1,000 sightings of unidentified flying objects have been reported to the Air Force. Of this number, only a small percent of those received from reliable sources remain unexplained.

‘The remainder of these sightings could be accounted for as misinterpretations of various conventional objects, a mild form of hysteria, meteorological phenomena, or hoaxes.

‘Of the unexplained sightings it can be stated that they appear in haphazard fashion and show no pattern which would indicate that the objects are being controlled by a reasoning body.

‘Due to the recent publicity given to Flying Saucer sightings, a large number of reports have been received by the Air Force during the last few months.

‘Preliminary evaluation of the reports do not indicate that they differ from those received in the past few years or that they actually represent a threat to the United States.

‘Nevertheless, each report is being given a most careful and complete analysis.’ ”

My comment: This article reveals a lot about how high-ranking U.S. Air Force officials viewed the UFO phenomenon in 1952.

First of all – they ordered USAF pilots to try to shoot down UFOs. That means, of course – that the Air Force viewed the UFOs as a threat.

And – we see that they looked down on good, honest Americans – when they said that some of the citizens had a “mild form of hysteria.” The only thing the UFO witnesses had said was that they had observed unknown flying objects.

Every UFO report is “being given a most careful and complete analysis,” the U.S. Air Force said. We have seen what Dr. J. Allen Hynek, Dr. James E. McDonald and other highly respected U.S. UFO researchers have said about the last statement.

A few days prior to the incident a scientist, from an agency that I can’t name and I were talking about the build-up of reports along the east coast of the United States. We talked for about two hours, and I was ready to leave when he said that he had one last comment to make - a prediction. From his study of the UFO reports that he was getting from Air Force Headquarters, and from discussions with his colleagues, he said that he thought that we were sitting right on top of a big keg full of loaded flying saucers. ‘Within the next few days,’ he told me, and I remember that he punctuated his slow, deliberate remarks by hitting the desk with his fist, ‘they’re going to blow up and you’re going to have the granddaddy of all UFO sightings. The sighting will occur in Washington or New York,’ he predicted, ‘probably Washington.’ ”

“Assistance in obtaining information concerning a reported unidentified flying object in the Gower, Mo., area [Groveton, Missouri] 4:30 o’clock in the morning, February 9 [1968], was asked of John C. Riley, jr., city aviation director, by the Air Force.

The request came from Maj. Hector Quintanilla, chief of the Aerial Phenomena office of the Foreign Technology division of the Air Force headquarters at the Wright Patterson base in Ohio.

The letter from the Air Force stated:

The Aerial Phenomena office is in receipt of an unidentified flying object report from Gower, Mo.

The observer [a farmer at a farm] sighted an extremely bright light and also heard a noise. It sounded similar to the swish of a piece of wire, whirled at high speed above a person’s head, and had pulsating rhythm of some kind. Initially the object was hovering, but when it moved toward the southwest, the noise was two or three louder and the sound pulsations were more rapid.”

“William Langley, a cotton planter, of Gwinnett County [Georgia], was standing in a field on his farm. Around him were several men, a woman and three children, all breaking the soil for cotton. The sky was clear and the air quiet, there being about both a hint of sultriness. The children had just stopped work and thrown themselves, tired as tired could be, on top of a pile of guano sacks, when a peculiar roaring was heard in the field. The sound bore some resemblance to that of an approaching train, but as no railroads were near, the workers looked at one another in amazement. In a moment they saw a small column not larger in circumference than a barrel skim rapidly along the ground. The wind column or spout appeared to be filled with dust, and in the centre contained what looked like a ball of fire. The mother rushed towards the children, who crouched low in fright, but before she could reach them the pile of guano bags, children and all, were scattered right and left. In its course, always eccentric, the column struck a stump fairly from butt to roots and tore it from the ground, the wood splitting into three pieces, and dropping twenty or thirty yards away. Mr. Langley was sucked in as the whirling thing bolted by and thrown into a ploughed gully some distance away. In the next instant the strange visitor had gone, passing up over the tops of trees. It was seen plainly by the ladies at the Langley House, appearing to them like the smoke that [rises] up in circular volumes from the smoke stack of a locomotive.”

“In this sensational country, when startling events crowd one another thick and fast, what transpired in the presence of some unsophisticated country folk living in the eastern portion of this country a few days since, may not elicit more than a passing notice and, it may be, a sceptical sneer from the worldly reader. But knowing Abe Goodpaster, his wife and his aged mother to be honest, truthful reputable citizens, living a quiet, unpretending life and mixing little with the world, we think their story worthy of more than passing notice and therefore give it to our readers as told to us:

About a half an hour by sun on Friday evening, the 7th inst., Mrs. Goodpaster stepped from her house into the yard to hang out some clothes which she had been washing. The sky was a perfect azure blue and not a cloud was to be seen. Presently there appeared high up in the heavens an object of such unusual appearance that the attention of Mrs. Goodpaster was at once riveted. Slowly it descended to within twenty feet of the earth, seemingly about seventy-five yards distant and directly over a cleared field. Here it assumed the form of a man of majestic and commanding appearance. A series of graceful gesticulations with the hands were first gone through with and then the figure with bowed head assumed a devotional attitude. Somewhat recovered by this time from the wondering surprise which chained her to the spot, Mrs. Goodpaster rushed into the house and called her mother and several children into the yard all of whom saw distinctly that which we have described. The figure then mounted into the heavens and was soon lost from view.

Other persons in different parts of the neighbourhood saw an unnatural object in the sky the same evening, some of whom thought it was a balloon. We did not pretend to have a theory but are firmly convinced that Mrs. Goodpaster, her mother and children honestly believe they saw a man descend from the sky and then ascend again late Friday evening on the 7th of this month [most likely 7 November 1879]. They were so very loth to communicate that which they knew seemed so impossible that the news did not reach this place until a week after the occurrence.”

“At 0605Z on 21 Jun 50, Capt. [Obermiller], [text unintelligible] Ftr Bomb Wg, on golf course at Misawa AFB, observed circular shaped object of natural color which appeared when tilted to be of highly polished silver and metallic construction. Object was approximately 2 miles horizontally from observer, estimated altitude 7000 feet, angle of elevation from horizon was 60. Object in view no longer than 20 seconds size estimated 30 feet diameter and 5 feet thick. First observed traveling parallel to and 1000 feet above F-80, came abreast of F-80 tilted at abut 45 D to horizontal flashed in sunlight and appeared to shimmer, then returned to horizontal and remained in same place. Rose almost vertically about 1000 feet, seemed to change direction slightly and rapidly disappeared. No evidence smoke or exhaust appeared to be spinning. No sound could be detected due to other aircraft. Speed estimated 650 mph when first sighted to 975 MPH when leaving.

Observer presently rated with 1100 hours in transport and fighter aircraft.”

My comment: Project Blue Book listed this case as “OTHER (REFLECTION).” That means that Project Blue Book was of the opinion that Captain Obermiller – who had flown 1100 hours in transport and fighter aircraft – could not distinguish between an unknown flying object and a light reflection.

In my opinion – this UFO case is a perfect example that shows how Project Blue Book attempted to explain away as many UFO cases as possible. Many highly respected, longtime U.S. UFO researchers are of the same opinion.

Part of this article focuses on the UFO sighting of flight commander Bud Evans and fellow pilot Clyde Good over Misawa, Japan, in April 1950. Both served in the 9th Fighter Squadron of the 49th Fighter-Bomber Wing in Misawa.

“The mystery pinged on ground radar, and flight commander Bud Evans got scrambled upstairs to check it out. By time he reached the target area, the thing was gone. During debriefings, his fellow airmen insisted they had encountered a broad, flat, airborne something-or-other, measuring maybe three times the size of a regulation target, but no more than three inches wide. It looked like a flying window pane – they could see the silhouettes of each other’s planes as they flanked the object. Before either could get a shot off, bingo, ‘it went straight up and out of sight,’ Evans says.

‘It was coming in pretty slow, and at first, we all thought it was a tow target, but we couldn’t see what was holding it up,’ he said. ‘So I’m looking for its power source, and there were no props, no jet engines, no visible means of propulsion, and it doesn’t make a sound. But it was definitely under the control of somebody or something, because then it pulled straight up, like a bat out of hell, and took off. Just disappeared.’ ”

UFO Video Interview: George Knapp Presents An Interview With David Fravor

George Knapp interviews David Fravor about the UFO incident he witnessed during the November 2004 USS Nimitz Carrier Strike Group 11 exercise.

David Fravor, who chased the UFO (resembled a white Tic Tac), was flying his F/A-18F Super Hornet jet fighter.

It was not Fravor who filmed the Tic Tac UFO. The UFO was filmed (by Chad Underwood) a while after Fravor’s incident. Both incidents occurred on 14 November 2004.

At the time of the UFO incident, Fravor was the commanding officer of the VFA-41 Black Aces, a U.S. Navy strike fighter squadron.
