UFO Report:
“The 1974 UFO Chronology”

Created: 15 May 2007

(NICAP.org)

Quote from the UFO report:
“This is an 11-page chronology of UFO incidents and events for 1974. Our thanks for these chronologies must go to our documentation team: Richard Hall (the original 1977 chronology from UFOE II), William Wise (Project Blue Book Archive), Dan Wilson (archive researcher), Brad Sparks (Comprehensive Catalog of Project Blue Book Unknowns), and Jean Waskiewicz  (online NICAP DBase [NSID]). Our latest repots [sic] come from the files of Mike Swords.

Humanoid Reports (HR, occupant sightings, Cat. 7) are still up. By 1974 the cattle mutilations are becoming a major issue to farmers in many U.S. states and by 1979 the phenomena will have claimed the lives of over 10,000 head of cattle. Night-time helicopters are often reported in the vicinity of mutilated cattle. Helicopter pilots take alternative routes or are flying 500 feet higher in order to evade angry stockmen with big guns.

Nov. 11, 1974; Central Newfoundland Area
RCMP report of Cessna 150 encounter involving John Breen a Gander Newfoundland Air Traffic Controller who was also a  pilot/instructor accompanied by a student pilot. ATC Gander painted the object for two sweeps then it disappeared from their screns [sic] at which time Breen spotted the object down low at he guessed at tree-top level. This latter seems significant-almost as if the damn thing knew it was now being painted and dropped to tree-top level to avoid radar. This event was included in Maritime UFO Files.

Nov. 11, 1974; Between Pensacola, FL and Mobile Bay
9:10 p.m. local. Marine Reserve Squadron pilot was flying a T-39D Sabreliner with five Naval officer pilots on board on a TACAN instrument penetration training flight. They were at 25,000 feet MSL, approximately 300 mph indicated airspeed, (440 kts true air speed), in straight and level flight, and on a heading of approximately 255 degrees true. The flight instructor sitting in the right-front seat was the first to sight a single, round, red small area of light maintaining position at their 1:00 o’clock position and their altitude. The reporting witness said that everyone ‘…felt it was a UFO and generally were glad to have finally seen one.’ Its angular diameter was about the same as half a penny held at arm’s length (approx. 15 min arc diameter). After receiving permission to deviate from the flight plan the pilot banked right about thirty degrees to fly directly toward the red light. After about a minute or more, now on the new heading of 270 degree, the red light suddenly and unexpectedly flew left directly across the nose of his airplane stopping abruptly at his 11:00 o’clock position where it remained for several more minutes. While maintaining this new position it never changed size, shape, or intensity. Its edge was sharply defined and without any haze or blur. After about four or five minutes total observation time the light accelerated toward the West and was gone in about ten seconds; it became progressively smaller until it was no longer visible. Upon landing the witnesses all completed an ‘incident form’ but never heard anything more about the matter. (Richard Haines)”

Wikipedia article: “Naval Air Station Pensacola”:

Quote from the Wikipedia article:
“Naval Air Station Pensacola or NAS Pensacola (IATA: NPA, ICAO: KNPA, FAA LID: NPA) (formerly NAS/KNAS until changed circa 1970 to allow Nassau International Airport, now Lynden Pindling International Airport, to have IATA code NAS), ‘The Cradle of Naval Aviation’, is a United States Navy base located next to Warrington, Florida, a community southwest of the Pensacola city limits. It is best known as the initial primary training base for all U.S. Navy, Marine Corps and Coast Guard officers pursuing designation as Naval Aviators and Naval Flight Officers, the advanced training base for most Naval Flight Officers, and as the home base for the United States Navy Flight Demonstration Squadron, the precision-flying team known as the Blue Angels.”

UFO Book Segment:
The Bill Pecha, Jr. UFO Incident,
Colusa, California, 10 September 1976

UFO News Article:
“When the night’s skies held more than stars – Colusa family recalls UFO sighting”

19 September 1979
(Valley Herald, Yuba City, California)

Sources: U.F.O. Newsclipping Service, Plumerville, Arkansas and AFU.se

The article reports on the Bill Pecha, Jr. UFO sighting (occurred at around 1:00 a.m.).

Quote from the article (Page 2):
“Three years ago on September 10th, 1976 a Colusa man, his wife, several of his neighbors, and a handful of other witnesses claimed they saw an unidentified flying object over Colusa. The case has since become one of the most well-documented  UFO sightings in recent history, but it is a mystery that has yet to be solved and a sighting that has yet to be proven or disproven by UFO experts even after three years.”

UFO News Article:
“UFO Over Colusa? – Bill Pecha’s Story”

13 September 1976
(Colusa Sun-Herald, California)

Sources: U.F.O. Newsclipping Service, Seattle, Washington and AFU.se

The whole article (Pages 1 and 2):
“ ‘It was a nightmarish experience I’ll never forget. I didn’t believe in UFOs before, but I do now. You’d have to see it to believe it, but so help me what I saw and felt about 1 A.M. Friday
(10 September 1976) outside our house is the truth.’

That’s what Bill Pecha, Jr., who does machine and bankout wagon work in his shop at 1650 Wilson Avenue, Colusa, told the Sun-Herald in describing what happened after the power went off (the power outage lasted for about nine minutes) while he was watching a Channel 12 television program. His wife and two children were asleep at the time. Said Pecha:

‘When the power went off I started outside and saw this huge glowing thing hovering over our house. It looked to me like it was 150 feet across and from 10 to 18 feet in height shooting out beams of bluish light. It looked like a huge inverted cup and saucer with the outer brim spinning clockwise and an inner disc spinning counter clockwise. When I got outside I felt funny. Seemed like all the hair on my body was being pulled up.

‘There were three of these things, the big one and two smaller ones on the high power line in back of the ‘Slim’ Davis house. There was no noise, no sounds of any kind just a huge blue halo of light with the big UFO maneuvering about at amazing speed. I awakened my wife and she and my son and daughter saw the whole thing, too. So did Les and Gayle Arant (they reside at 846 Thirteenth Street) because I awakened them as I drove into town to report the UFO sighting to the sheriff’s office. At that time this ‘thing’ was heading toward the fairgrounds and disappeared in a southeasterly direction, like toward Sacramento.

Pecha said the Arants drove into town, too, as a report was made to the sheriff's office which apparently had received other reports from Colusa area residents who had seen the strange glowing object.

Pecha said he was so frightened that  he drove into town as fast as he could in his pickup with the lights out. But, he said, the bluish light from this thing, about 50 feet off the ground, seemingly followed him, then disappeared. He further described the events which transpired thusly:

‘Slim Davis and his wife were asleep. There was a bluish light all over their place, and coming down these shafts of light turned to an all-white color. This thing darted about, clear out to the foothills and back. On each side it had two things about eight feet long which hung down and curled around underneath it. They looked like wire bristles. The power line poles were glowing and the two smaller UFOs each had lights.

‘All of this happened, I guess, in a matter of 15 or 20 minutes. A call was placed to Phenomena Research, the UFO reporting center in Seattle, Washington, and the man in charge asked if this thing I saw had three lights, or windows, and I said it did. My report was that it seemed to have long flexible cables by which it looked like it was being maneuvered.’

Pecha, who said he and his family didn’t get much sleep after the early Friday morning incident, told his story to a number of Colusans and has received numerous telephone calls. ‘I  guess some believe me and some don’t,’ he said. ‘But I know what I and others saw. It made a UFO believer out of me, that’s for sure.’

Pechas said two officers from the sheriff’s department came out to talk with him further about what he saw. It is also understood that a man from the UFO reporting center in Seattle is coming here to talk with Pecha about the incident and also to have him make a drawing of the object.

Pacific Gas & Electric Company officials who were contacted about the incident said there may have been some relation between it and the fact that about the time the power outage occurred shortly before 1 A.M. Friday, the PG&E substation at Victorville went out, causing a high voltage power line overload.

The nine-minute power outage affected thousands of Northern California homes.

It was suggested that the power overload caused static electricity being conducted into the ground and this might have accounted for the weird, glowing UFO witnessed and experienced by Pecha and others.

But Pecha doesn’t buy this theory. ‘It was big, it was real, it was terrifying shafts of light seemingly come at you, hovering over barns and houses, darting away, coming back, moving upward, then shooting back down close to the ground. I wasn’t a believer in UFOs before, but I certainly am now. I don’t ever want to go through anything like this again.’ ”

The article contains Bill Pecha’s drawing of the UFO.

I also reported about this UFO case on 3 November 2013.

UFO Report:
“The 1976 UFO Chronology”

Created: 15 July 2007
Updated: 23 January 2017
(NICAP.org)

Quote from the UFO report:
“Our thanks for these chronologies must go to our documentation team: Richard Hall (the original 1976 chronology from UFOE II), William Wise (Project Blue Book Archive), Dan Wilson (archive researcher), Brad Sparks (Comprehensive Catalog of Project Blue Book Unknowns), and Jean Waskiewicz (online NICAP DBase [NSID]). Jan. 21, 1976; Cannon AFB, NM
Sometime before 3:55 a.m. MST. NMCC Memo: The following information was received from the Air Force Operations center at 0555 EST: ‘Two UFOs are reported near the flight line at Cannon AFB, New Mexico. Security Police observing them reported the UFOs to be 25 yards in diameter, gold or silver in color with blue light on top, hole in the middle and red light on the bottom. Air Force is checking with radar. Additionally, checking weather inversion data.’ (Actual FOIA document) Among other UFO researchers who arrived in Clovis were several members of the ‘UFO Study Group,’ which has about 40 members, mainly employees of the Los Alamos Scientific Laboratories the facility where the atomic bomb was developed in World War II. Police said scores of sightings were reported between 6 p.m. and 10:30 p.m. Friday an hour before the Los Alamos observers arrived. (Las Cruces SUN NEWS, Sunday Morning, Jan. 25, 1976)

Reports of the sightings have increased steadily since the first night. Most of the reports have been of faraway objects, but Town Marshal Willie Ronquillo of Texico said he followed a silent object about 300 yards over his car. Ronquillo said the object, which had green, yellow and blue lights, sped away at a high speed to the north. Lenore Hildebrand of the UFO center in Wisconsin said Jim Epps of Valley Center, Calif., would arrive in Clovis. She said an Air Force officer from Clovis called the center Friday night and told them he ‘had a very close sighting and was able to witness a type of vehicle that did maneuver and that was unlike any type aircraft he has ever seen.’ (Las Cruces SUN News, same as above)”

NOTE: The Port Austin, Michigan, UFO incident occurred on Tuesday, 7 September 1976, according to the news article, “Objects Visible Near Pt. Austin – AF Confirms ‘Radar Returns’ On Night Of UFO Sightings” (realtvufos.blogspot.com).

I also reported about this UFO report on 25 August 2013.

Wikipedia article: “Cannon Air Force Base”:

Quote from the Wikipedia article:
“Cannon Air Force Base is a United States Air Force Base, located approximately 7 miles (11 km) southwest of Clovis, New Mexico. It is under the jurisdiction of Air Force Special Operations Command (AFSOC). The population of the Cannon AFB CDP was 2,245 as of the 2010 census. The host unit at Cannon is the 27th Special Operations Wing (27 SOW), which activated on 1 October 2007, and is assigned to the Air Force Special Operations Command (AFSOC). The 27 SOW plans and executes specialized and contingency operations using advanced aircraft, tactics and air refueling techniques to infiltrate, exfiltrate and resupply special operations forces (SOF) and provide intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance and close air support in support of SOF operations.

Cannon AFB was established in 1942 as Army Air Base, Clovis. The commander of the 27th Special Operations Wing is Colonel Tony D. Bauernfeind.[3] The Command Chief Master Sergeant is Paul J. Henderson II.[4]

A variety of special operations aircraft are stationed at Cannon, including the AC-130W Stinger II, MQ-1 Predator, MQ-9 Reaper, CV-22 Osprey and several versions of light and medium transport aviation aircraft. The AC-130W is assigned to the 73rd Special Operations Squadron, with all twelve becoming operational in 2010.[5]”
