views UFO phenomenon”

19 June 1984
(Star Tribune (not Star & Tribune), Minneapolis, Minnesota)

UFO author and researcher Terry Hansen presents a book review of Lawrence A. Fawcett and Barry J. Greenwood’s UFO book, Clear Intent (the book was retitled “The UFO Cover-Up”).

Quote from the article (Page 1):
“In ‘Clear Intent,’ a book published by Prentice-Hall, authors Lawrence Fawcett and Barry J. Greenwood provide a sensational but not a sensationalized account of how UFOs consistently managed to intrude into sensitive Air Force facilities across the United States during the 1970s. According to the government’s own documents, the UFOs that set off Minuteman security alarms in Montana also haunted bases in Maine, Michigan, North Dakota, New Mexico, Florida and elsewhere. After each visit the UFOs escaped, leaving behind frightened and puzzled Air Force witnesses.”

UFO News Article:
“State Author Claims UFO Cover-Up”

21 April 1984
(Hartford Courant, Connecticut)

Sources: U.F.O. Newsclipping Service, Plumerville, Arkansas and AFU.se

The article reports on the UFO book, Clear Intent (the book was retitled “The UFO Cover-Up”), and the research work of Lawrence A. Fawcett. The book is written by Fawcett and Barry J. Greenwood.

Quote from the article (Page 7):
“The Coventry police lieutenant’s interest in Unidentified Flying Objects is a serious one, and the government is just as concerned as he is, Fawcett maintains in his soon-to-be released book on the subject.

The government has been covering up dangerous activities by UFOs, says Fawcett in ‘Clear Intent: The Government Cover-up of the UFO Experience ,’ the book he wrote with Barry J. Greenwood, a postal worker in Stoneham, Mass.

Fawcett’s fascination with UFOs began in 1965, when he saw a strange glowing object floating above an electrical substation in Manchester. A flash of electricity passed between the object and the substation, Fawcett said.

Since then, he has studied reports of UFO sightings and he and others have amassed 4,000 pages of documents from the Air Force, the FBI, the CIA and the National Security Agency, which collects foreign intelligence and protects the security of Armed Forces communications.

The truth about UFOs, Fawcett said, is that they have penetrated high-security areas in Strategic Air Command bases, where unauthorized craft are not allowed.

The documents record hundreds of sightings of strange, glowing lights; mysterious, unidentified helicopters and other unexplained objects in the sky:

• ‘The object was a glowing orange light that flew on our wing at about 1 mile,’ Capt. K.E. May said in a report to his superiors at Michigan’s Wurtsmith Air Force Base on Sept. 30, 1981. ‘We attempted to close in on it and it came at us on a 90-degree intercept.’ May twice closed in on the object, but it evaded his plane, seemingly reversing direction in mid-air, and finally disappeared overhead, the report says.

• In September and October 1975, strange objects were sighted at five Strategic Air Command bases in the northern United States, reports say.

‘For two months, UFOs were coming and going with impunity at these bases,’ Fawcett said. ‘Our latest planes couldn't stop them.’

In Cascade County, Mont., the sheriff’s office released this report: ‘A local veterinarian observed a white light in the sky with a red light on the side. His observation was that the cattle in the area started howling louder than he had ever heard.’

The Strategic Air Command was almost as disturbed as the cattle. On Oct. 29, 1975, it released the following memo: ‘As a short-term measure we are directing our Northern Tier SP (special police) units to assume security option III - Security Vigilance Posture during hours of darkness.’

Reports in the book were obtained by Fawcett, Greenwood and other members of Citizens Against UFO Secrecy of New York City. Most were obtained through Freedom of Information Act suits in U.S. District Court and the U.S. Court of Appeals in Washington, D.C.

‘These documents show that UFOs are real. They’re not the result of hallucinations or air balloons,’ Fawcett said. ‘They show that UFOs display a technology far beyond ours.’

A report NSA submitted for the private inspection of a U.S. appeals court judge in Washington, D.C., contends that releasing records of UFO sightings would give an enemy important information about the country’s ability to detect foreign aircraft.

When Fawcett got the report, it was so heavily censored with black pencil that fragments such as ‘In this document, the author discovers what he considers to be ...’ were followed by a full page of blacked-out material.

‘I feel that UFOs do pose a threat to the security of the United States,’ Fawcett said. If military aircraft could duplicate UFOs’ ability to move and change directions at incredibly high speeds, ‘we'd have air superiority over the world. If the Russians could do it, they’d control us.’

‘We have a right to know about UFOs,’ he said, ‘and the government has a duty to tell us.’

Prentice-Hall Inc. of Englewood Cliffs, N.J., will release the book in June.”

My comment: The 1975 northern tier (U.S./Canada) Strategic Air Command (SAC) bases UFO incidents occurred mainly in October and November.

UFO Mailing List Post:
“General Curtis LeMay: ‘UFOs Are Real’ ”

From: Stig Agermose, 9 May 1998
(UFO UpDates, Toronto, Canada)

Quote from the article:
“General Curtis E. LeMay
Commander, Strategic Air Command

By William E. Jones
MUFON State Director for Ohio

General LeMay made at least one public statement about flying saucers, this in his 1965 book written with MacKinlay Kantor entitled Mission With LeMay – My Story. The statement appears on pages 541 through 543. Interestingly, the subject of flying
saucers and UFOs doesn’t appear in the book’s index.

The most interesting comments made by the General are as follows: ‘Here, for what they are worth, are my own comments on the subject. Naturally I am not quoting any Classified information. I am giving the straightest answers I can give... The bulk of the
[flying saucer] reports could be run down. Some natural phenomenon might usually account for those sightings which had been seen and reported, and thus explain them. However, we had a number of reports from reputable people (well-educated,
serious-minded folks - scientists and flyers) who surely saw something.

‘There is no question about it: these were things which we could not tie in with any natural phenomena known to our investigators.

‘Many of the mysteries might be explained away as weather balloons, stars, reflected lights, all sorts of odds and ends. I don’t mean to say that, in the unclosed and unexplained or unexplainable instances, those were actually flying objects. All I can say is that no natural phenomena could be found to account for them.
...

‘Unfortunately there is a current belief, on the part of the public as a whole – the intelligent public – that the United States Air Force has made and is still making a deliberate effort to discount all reported sightings. Furthermore, if they couldn’t actually discount a certain case by referring to hallucination, inexperience, or mass hysteria – to disregard it completely.

‘It is alleged also that there have been attempts, by word of mouth or by directive to newspapers from the Air Force, to hush the whole thing up. To muzzle the press...People who believe these rumors are clinging to a falsehood. It is absolutely untrue that any such directive was ever put forth. I never heard of it in 1947, when the first saucer accounts were published; I never heard of it after I came to command SAC; never heard of it when I was in the Pentagon...We must have had a bad public relations program in this particular area, to let such an impression get out.
...

‘Let me repeat: to my knowledge, there’s never been any directive or effort from the top, in the Air Force, to control the public attitude toward UFOs.

‘And repeat again: there were some cases we could not explain. Never could.’ ”

In their book, The UFO Cover-Up, Lawrence A. Fawcett and Barry J. Greenwood also report on General LeMay’s UFO comments (Page 211). The authors do not agree with LeMay’s comment that the U.S. Air Force did not muzzle/influence the press’/media’s reporting of UFOs. Fawcett and Greenwood write that an enormous body of evidence support this view.

U.S. Government UFO Document:
Commander-In-Charge of NORAD (CINCNORAD)
Message To NORAD Units In North America

Date: 11 November 1975

Source: NICAP.org

Source: “Clear Intent: The Government Coverup of the UFO Experience” by Lawrence A. Fawcett and Barry J. Greenwood

The book was published by Prentice Hall Trade, Upper Saddle River, New Jersey in May 1984.

“Subject: "Wurtsmith and Others" – 1975” (Page 50):

http://www.nicap.org/articles/CI-Wurtsmith.htm

The document text:
“Part I. Since 28 Oct 75 numerous reports of suspicious objects have been received at the NORAD CU; reliable military personnel at Loring AFB, Maine, Wurtsmith AFB, Michigan, Malmstrom AFB, Mt, Minot AFB, ND, and Canadian Forces Station, Falconbridge, Ontario, Canada, have visually sighted suspicious objects.

Part II. Objects at Loring and Wurtsmith were characterized to be helicopters. Missile Site Personnel, Security Alert Teams, and Air Defense Personnel at Malmstrom Montana report an object which sounded like a jet aircraft. FAA (Federal Aviation Administration) advised there were no jet aircraft in the vicinity. Malmstrom search and height finder radars carried the object between 9,500 ft. and 15,600 ft. at a speed of seven knots. There was intermittent radar contact with the object from 0807532 thru 09002 Nov. 75. F-106s scrambled from Malmstrom could not make contact due to darkness and low altitude. Site personnel reported the object as low as 200 ft and said that as the interceptors approached the lights went out. After the interceptors had passed the lights came on again, one hour after they returned to base. Missile site personnel reported the object increased to a high speed, raised in altitude and could not be discerned from the stars.

Part III. Minot AFB on 10 Nov reported that the base was buzzed by a bright object the size of a car at an altitude of 1000 to 2000 ft. There was no noise emitted by the vehicle.

Part IV. This morning, 11 Nov 75, CFS Falconbridge reported search and height finder radar paints on an object up to 30 nautical miles south of the site ranging in altitude from 26,000 ft. to 72,000 ft. The site commander and other personnel say the object appeared as a bright star but much closer. With binoculars the object appeared as a 100 ft. diameter sphere and appeared to have craters around the outside.

Part V. Be assured that this command is doing everything possible to identify and provide solid factual information on these sightings. I have also expressed my concern to SAFOI that we come up soonest with a proposed answer to queries from the press to prevent overreaction by the public to reports by the media that may be blown out of proportion. To date efforts by Air Guard helicopters, SAC helicopters and Norad F-106s have failed to produce positive ID.”

Comment by Fawcett/Greenwood:
“Note that the Falconbridge report mentioned here contains a few more details than had been available. The November 11 UFO appeared as a "100 foot diameter sphere" and was pockmarked with "craters" on the outside. Hardly a conventional aircraft!

There is also concern in the message that the press would overreact to the stories and that steps should be taken to prevent this. The media hardly reacted to the incidents at the time, and when they did, it usually was in the local press where very limited public reaction could be expected. The "prevent" tactic worked, and the magnitude of the UFO intrusions was recognized only well after the objects have come and gone.

The Air Force was lucky. Had full-blown media coverage been applied to the stories in the same general time frame when they happened, a Pandora's Box of criticism would surely have resulted over the Air Force's inability to deal effectively with the aerial invaders.”

The U.S. military’s explanation (helicopters) for the UFO incidents that occurred over the northern tier military bases (U.S. and Canada) in October and November 1975 is clearly unfounded – based on the three sentences I have underlined.

U.S. Government UFO Documents:
“FOO-FIGHTER DOCUMENTS”

(U.S. Army Air Forces, Washington, D.C. and
U.S. Air Force, Washington, D.C.)

Source: CUFON.org

Text by CUFON.org:
“09-September-1998  The text of several official documents mentioning Foo-Fighters and Foo-Fighter-like phenomena are presented here.

These documents were located, and provided to CUFON, by Barry Greenwood, veteran researcher, for many years the Editor of the widely celebrated bulletin Just Cause, co-author of the breakthrough Clear Intent, and now the Editor of the U.F.O. Historical Review which debuted in June, 1998.

Foo-Fighters are often mentioned in the UFO literature as being among the first modern era sightings of unidentified aerial objects, predating as they do the widely known civilian Arnold sighting of June, 1947.  Seldom however, is documentary evidence of the reality and nature of these sightings presented to support mention of the Foo-Fighters.  While the documents presented herein by no means represent all such material, they are a dramatic insight into the UFOs of the Second World War, and come from both the European and Pacific regions.”

Wikipedia article: “United States Army Air Forces”:

Quote from the Wikipedia article:
“The United States Army Air Forces (USAAF or AAF), informally known as the Air Force,[1] was the aerial warfare service of the United States during and immediately after World War II (1939/41–1945), successor to the previous United States Army Air Corps and the direct predecessor of the United States Air Force of today, one of the five uniformed military services. The AAF was a component of the United States Army, which in 1942 was divided functionally by executive order into three autonomous forces: the Army Ground Forces, the Services of Supply (which in 1943 became the Army Service Forces), and the Army Air Forces. Each of these forces had a commanding general who reported directly to the Army Chief of Staff.

The AAF administered all parts of military aviation formerly distributed among the Air Corps, General Headquarters Air Force, and the ground forces’ corps area commanders, and thus became the first air organization of the U.S. Army to control its own installations and support personnel. The peak size of the AAF during the Second World War was over 2.4 million men and women in service and nearly 80,000 aircraft by 1944, and 783 domestic bases in December 1943.[2] By ‘V-E Day’, the Army Air Forces had 1.25 million men stationed overseas and operated from more than 1,600 airfields worldwide.[3]”

The USAAF was disbanded on 18 September 1947.

Wikipedia article: “United States Air Force”:

Quote from the Wikipedia article:
“The United States Air Force (USAF) is the aerial and space warfare service branch of the United States Armed Forces. It is one of the five branches of the United States Armed Forces, and one of the seven American uniformed services. Initially established as a part of the United States Army on 1 August 1907, the USAF was formed as a separate branch of the U.S. Armed Forces on 18 September 1947 with the passing of the National Security Act of 1947. It is the youngest branch of the U.S. Armed Forces, and the fourth in order of precedence. The USAF is the largest[13] and most technologically advanced[14] air force in the world. The Air Force articulates its core missions as air and space superiority, global integrated ISR, rapid global mobility, global strike, and command and control.

The U.S. Air Force is a military service branch organized within the Department of the Air Force, one of the three military departments of the Department of Defense. The Air Force, through the Department of the Air Force, is headed by the civilian Secretary of the Air Force, who reports to the Secretary of Defense, and is appointed by the President with Senate confirmation. The highest-ranking military officer in the Air Force is the Chief of Staff of the Air Force, who exercises supervision over Air Force units and serves as one of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. Air Force components are assigned, as directed by the Secretary of Defense, to the combatant commanders, and neither the Secretary of the Air Force nor the Chief of Staff of the Air Force have operational command authority over them.

Along with conducting independent air and space operations, the U.S. Air Force provides air support for land and naval forces and aids in the recovery of troops in the field. As of 2017, the service operates more than 5,369 military aircraft, 406 ICBMs and 170 military satellites. It has a $161 billion budget and is the second largest service branch, with 318,415 active duty personnel, 140,169 civilian personnel, 69,200 Air Force Reserve personnel, and 105,700 Air National Guard personnel.”
