UFO Case Directory (RADCAT):
“UFO Alert At Edwards AFB
Oct. 7, 1965
Edwards AFB & surrounding area”

(NICAP.org)

The whole UFO case report:
“Francis Ridge:
Oct. 7, 1965; Edwards AFB area, California
Up to twelve luminous UFOs flew over this secure test facility and the region, and at least one F-106A interceptor was scrambled from George AFB at Victorville. All of this action was captured on classified U.S. Air Force audio tapes which have now been declassified and are available to the public along with official documentation. The question in my mind is, what was going on during those 3-4 hours we don’t know about? If we were allowed to hear only 6 hours of 40,  and read only 17 pages of hard-to-read documents, what is it we were NOT allowed to hear and see? The documents we have make it clear that by the time Alpha Lima Zero One was scrambled at at 1209Z or 5:09 PM PDT, ‘the activity was just about over.’

Joel Carpenter:
That evening, October 7 (and the following one, October 8), 1965, some 700 engineers and scientists attended the Fourth X-15 Technical Conference at the (then) NASA Flight Research Center at Edwards AFB. This dealt with the research results of the 150 some X-15 flights made since 1959. (Astronautics and Aeronautics 1965  NASA SP-4006, page 464 - Joel Carpenter)”

NICAP.org presents U.S. government (U.S. Air Force) documents that pertain to the UFO case.

About RADCAT (text by NICAP.org):
“RADCAT is a revitalized special project now being conducted jointly by NICAP & Project 1947 with the help and cooperation of the original compiler of RADCAT, Martin Shough, to create a comprehensive listing of radar cases with detailed documentation from all previous catalogues, including UFOCAT and original RADCAT.”

U.S. Government UFO Document:
“SUBJECT: UFO” (Page 5)

Date: 21 December 1965
(U.S. Air Force, Washington, D.C.)

Source: NICAP.org

The document deals with the 7 October 1965 Edwards Air Force Base, California, UFO incident.

The document was sent by Headquarters Air Force Flight Test Center, Air Force Systems Command, United States Air Force, Edwards Air Force Base, California, to FTD (TDFC), Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, Ohio.

The document is written by John D. Balent, Captain, USAF, Technical Evaluation Officer, Deputy for Foreign Technology, for the Commander.

Quote from the document (not written in U.S. Department of Defense document format):
“1. The following report of UFOs is submitted per para. 14, AFR 200-2 and 200-2A:

a. DESCRIPTION OF OBJECTS:

(1) All objects had the general shape and appearance of stars.

(2) The largest appeared to be twice the size of an ordinary star. The others were the same size as stars which would make them about the size of a pinhead when held at arms length.

(3) The objects were the same color as stars.

(4) There were from 7 to 12 objects involved.

(5)  There was no discernible formation with one exception. Three of the objects appeared to be in what might roughly be described as an inverted “V”.

(6) The objects that were held visually appeared to be flashing red, green and white lights at one time or another.

(7) None

(8) None

(9) One of the objects was reported as “pushing a small cloud” in front of it. This is the one object that could be explained. It was a weather balloon.

b. DESCRIPTION OF COURSE OF OBJECTS:

(1) The Edwards tower operator first noticed flashing lights from these objects in the normal course of his duties.

(2) The first and most prominent of these objects was originally sighted at an elevation of 010° and an azimuth of 062°. The other objects appeared to have an elevation of between 020 and 045° and azimuths of 050 to 075°. It is impossible to determine just which of the radar contacts correlate with the visual sightings. There were reports of up to 12 radar contacts from relatively dispersed sites. LAADS received reports at various times from San Pedro, Laguna, March AFB, and Boron. All were able to show contacts in the area under consideration at one time or another during the 4½-hour period. The duration of most of these contacts was very short. The three contacts which eventually figured in the decision to scramble were U090, U091, and U092. LAADS did hold these contacts in a close enough proximity to those under visual observation that there is a possibility that they were the same.

(3) Of the seven objects reported visually, four persisted longer than the others. The brightest, most prominent of these was last seen flashing at an elevation of approximately 050° and an azimuth of 135°. The other three were in what might rougly be described as an inverted “V” and were last seen flashing at an elevation of 035° and azimuths of from 140 to 150°. The remaining three, which were visible for a shorter period of time, disappeared at approximately 045° elevation and in the vicinity of 060 to 090° azimuth.

(4) The objects varied in their flight paths. A general statement might be made that their main change was in altitude. There were definite changes in azimuth but these were relatively small. The four digits seen most clearly appeared to hover, then rise in a near vertical direction. Only a general statement about the radar tracks is possible. All the contacts obtained on search radar were difficult to hold because of slow speeds involved. The height finding radar similarly had little luck in giving valid changes in altitude. There was no discernible pattern to the flight paths of objects when considered as a whole.

(5) Three of the objects held visually just gradually faded from view. The four objects that were seen most clearly; i.e., the very bright object and the three in an inverted “V” seemed to take their place among the stars and persisted, looking like all the other stars, until dawn. These objects possibly faded like the others and were replaced in the eyes of the observers by the stars that happened to be in the area of last sighting.

(6) Again the objects were visible for varying lengths of time. The first observation took place at 0833Z (0133 PDT). The four most prominent objects flashed for about two hours. As mentioned above, these objects persisted until dawn although they ceased flashing after two hours. The other three objects were visible for approximately 30 minutes.

c. MANNER OF OBSERVATION:

(1) The objects were observed both visually and electronically from the ground. Search, height finding, and approach radar all held the objects.

(2) All ground observers used 7x50 binoculars.

(3) N/A

d. TIME AND DATE OF SIGHTING:

(1) 7 October 1965, 0133Z (correct time: 0133 PDT (see b. 6))

(2) Night

e. LOCATION OF OBSERVERS:

(1) The observers were located at base operations, Edwards AFB, Calif.

f. IDENTIFYING INFORMATION ON OBSERVERS:

(1) Darryl Clark, Capt, 329th FIS, George AFB, Calif., pilot. Capt. Clark is an alert pilot with Det. 1 at Edwards AFB. He happened to be on duty and was called upon to observe the activity. His observations were all made from the ground.

(2) Charles A. Sorrels, SSgt, 1925 Communications Sq, AFCS, tower operator.

(3) Forrest S. Honer, SSgt, Hq Sq Section, 6510th AB Group, Edwards AFB, dispatcher.

(4) Keith C. Peneau, A2C, Det. 21, 6th Weather Wg, weather observer.

All these observers are proficient in their particular jobs and could be classified as very reliable.

g. WEATHER AND WINDS--ALOFT CONDITIONS AT TIME AND PLACE OF SIGHTINGS:

(1) All observers agree that weather was clear and visibility good.

h. ANY OTHER UNUSUAL ACTIVITY OR CONDITION:

(1) None

i. INTERCEPTION OR IDENTIFICATION ACTION TAKEN:

An F-106 was scrambled from George AFB at 1209Z (0509 PDT). The aircraft was was controlled throughout its search on a visual basis by the Edwards tower. By the time the aircraft was scrambled the activity was just about over. The objects that were held visually had ceased flashing and had taken on the appearance of ordinary stars as mentioned earlier. Radar contact was gone or was of insufficient duration to be used in vectoring the aircraft. Passes were made through the area at 15,000, 20,000, and 40,000 ft. The only thing out of the ordinary reported by the pilot was reflection of red lights from the dry lake bed near Edwards. He felt that these were reflections from something other than the beacons in the area.

j. During the period of the sightings there was no air traffic nor were there balloon releases that might have been mistaken for the objects.

k. COMMENTS:

In summary, no one in the Air Defense Sector could provide a plausible explanation, nor did they seem overly concerned once the incident was over. Their experience and the sources of information available to them provided no help. There seems to be no question that they did have radar control at several sites. The ground observers claim definitely to have seen flashing lights for which they could offer or find no explanation. Everyone concerned at both LAADS and Edwards seems convinced that something unusual occurred.

l. EXISTENCE OF PHYSICAL EVIDENCE:

There are radar scope photos which indicated unidentified contacts were held. These scope photos are being forwarded as a part of this report.”

UFO News Article:
“ ‘CIGAR’ PASSES A FEW HUNDRED
FEET ABOVE NORWEGIAN SHIP”

Text by waterufo.net:
“One of the most interesting sightings of 1965 occured [sic] at the island of Santa Maria in the Azores on July 9th (1965) when a cigar-shaped object flew over at 20,000 ft. and stopped all the electric clocks at the airport for a period of 45 minutes. (See Flying Saucer Review, September/ October 1965, page 24. Also Daily Express of July 12 and Fate magazine of February 1966.)

Gordon Creighton has translated from the Norwegian newspaper Moss Dagbled [sic] of December 27, 1965, the following remarkable account of another sighting which took place not many miles S.W. of the Azores three days before and may relate to the self-same UFO.

Chief Mate Torgrim Lien of the T.T. Jawesta, owned by the Jahr Shipping Company, had a curious experience while his ship was en route last summer from Puerto La Cruz, Venezuela, to the Canary Islands. Lien saw a so-called ‘flying saucer’ only 200 metres above the ship. The incident took place in the North Atlantic on July 6, and a report on it was sent to various authorities, including the Geophysical Institute in Bergen. This report has never been published in any newspaper until now... The report is considered to be a very good one.

THE REPORT (from Ship’s Log)

T.T. Jawesta. North Atlantic. July 8, 1965. Report regarding unidentified flying object. On Tuesday, July 6, 1965, while en route from Puerto La Cruz, Venezuela, to Santa Cruz de Tenerife in the Canary Islands, at 2152 hours GMT, the ship’s position being 24° 40’ N 31°15’ W, with wind from N.E., strength 5. Low cloud ceiling travelling with the wind. Barometer 1023. Temperature 23° Celsius.

‘At 2152 GMT (1852 ship’s time), the look-out on the port side, of the bridge reported a bright object in the sky moving in a northerly direction. When I got around to the port side, I saw an intense blue, fiery tongue which was approaching the ship at tremendous speed. I ran to the telephone and rang the captain, and without waiting for an answer, I seized binoculars and ran out on to the starboard side and saw the object through the binoculars as it passed over the ship. It passed straight abaft of the ship and at a height of from 200 to 400 metres, under the low clouds.

‘It was bright like a star, and the moonlight was shining through between the low clouds, and I could clearly see the outlines of the upper part of it. Its shape was that of a cigar, and I could clearly see a row of square windows and the faint golden-orange coloured light from inside it. There was no sign of wings or rudder. The object had a bluish tongue of fire behind it, which was most concentrated near the tail, fanning out a little further back.

‘A little farther back still, behind the body, I could see a tremendous number of globes, and from every globe there was streaming out a blue beam, away from the body.

‘The length of the fiery tongue would, I should think, have been about 100 metres. The object seemed to be far bigger than any aircraft known up to this present day.

‘Its speed was tremendous and it was visible for about 30 to 40 seconds. It was moving at the time in N-S direction, its approximate course being 180°.

‘Despite its enormous speed and the closeness of its passage, we could not hear the least sound from it.

‘The lookout on the port side, seaman Hernandez Ambrosio, maintained that it seemed as though the object had come up out of the sea and that it was travelling northwards and then suddenly changed course towards us.

‘The helmsman, ordinary seaman Narciso Gulllén, saw the object just after it had passed over the ship. And on the poop, fitter Juan Hernandez and mess-hand Ignacio Suarez also saw it. Their accounts tally with mine.

‘I can say with complete certainty that it was no question of an aircraft of conventional type, or rocket, or meteor, or ball lightning.

‘I shall be glad to hear the opinion of an expert on this phenomenon.

(Signed) Torgrim Lien, Chief Mate, on duty at the time.

‘The report is confirmed by a number of the ship’s crew who themselves also saw the peculiar flying object. The report was accompanied by a sketch, which, however, we unfortunately did not find clear enough for reproduction in our newspaper. The original report and sketch were sent to the Geophysical Institute at Bergen by the ship’s Captain, H. A. Trovik.

‘What the Institute’s reply about it was, we do not know at present.’

UFO News Article:
“UFO Sighted by Officers”

7 October 1965
(Traverse City Record-Eagle, Michigan)

Source: NewspaperArchive.com

The whole article:
“Three [Coldwater, Michigan] sheriff’s deputies sent verify a rash of unidentified flying object sightings said Wednesday they watched a strange white object zip through the sky for a half hour.

The deputies said they watched through binoculars Tuesday night [5 October 1965] as the glowing object stopped abruptly, rose vertically, then sped from sight.

Their report was similar to many from this southern Michigan area during the past four or five nights. Resident reported bright objects with blinking green, blue and red rays.

The Air Force’s main Michigan center at Battle Creek said it had received no UFO reports and had spotted nothing unusual on radar. The sheriff’s office here said it had not reported the sightings to the Air Force.”

My comment:
These UFO incidents occurred five months before the March 1966 South East Michigan UFO flap.

UFO News Article: “4 GIRLS SEE UFO THURSDAY”

2 October 1965 (The Gettysburg Times, Pennsylvania)

The UFO was sighted over North Street, McSherrystown, Pennsylvania on 30 September 1965, at around 8:00 p.m., according to the article:

Quote from the article:
“The object was described as ‘looking like a bright golden fireball’ at a distance, but as it hovered over the tree about 50 feet from the ground it was seen to have a ‘bright shiny silver color’ with white light coming through its windows. It was described as being 25 to 35 feet in length and about 15 to 20 feet wide, and had a flat bottom with a half-moon shaped body. The object also was reported to have made a high pitched sound ‘like a spinning top.’

The girls said the object hovered over the tree top for about 10 minutes, and for a few minutes during this period completely shut off all its lights. After the object’s lights came back on it shot off in a southwestern direction toward Littlestown where there were reports it was again sighted.”

“UFOS OVER FDR”
(Sci Fi Channel, U.S.A.)

Source: TVUFOFootage (YouTube channel)

This Sightings episode focuses on the many UFO sightings that have occurred over the aircraft carrier USS Franklin D. Roosevelt throughout the years:

The TV report includes a UFO photograph that was taken by a newspaper reporter.

USS FDR carried both conventionally- and nuclear-armed aircraft. And UFOs have been sighted many times near nuclear research facilities, power plants, weapons storage facilities, ICBM weapons sites and aircraft carriers in the United States, UK and Russia (Soviet Union).

USS Franklin D. Roosevelt (Midway class) history:

* USS FDR was commissioned on 27 October 1945.
* 1946: Took part in the first McDonnell XFD-1 Phantom and Lockheed P-80A jets tests.
* From 8 August to 4 October 1946: Was a part of a U.S. Navy force that visited Athens to bolster the government of Greece in the Greek Civil War.
* In 1950: USS FDR became the first carrier to take nuclear weapons to sea. Troops (Operation Magic Carpet).
* In September and October 1952: Participated in Operation Mainbrace, the first major NATO exercise in the North Atlantic.
* During 1954-1956: Was extensively modernised.
* From August 1966 to January 1967: The ship’s only deployment to South East Asia.
* During 1954-1956: Was extensively modernised for second time.
* In the October 1973 Yom Kippur War: Served as a transit 'landing field' for aircraft being delivered to Israel.
* From June 1976 to April 1977: Embarked Marine Attack Squadron 231 (VMA-231) with 14 AV-8A Harrier jets.
* USS FDR was decommissioned on 30 September 1977.

USS Franklin D. Roosevelt took part in the following wars:

Greek Civil War (1944-1949)
Vietnam War (1st period) (1965-1968)
Yom Kippur War (1973)
