UFO Report:
“The 1988 UFO Chronology”

Created: 15 July 2008
Updated: 9 December 2016
(NICAP.org)

Quote from the UFO report:
“This is currently a 9-page chronology of UFO incidents and events for 1988. Our thanks for these chronologies must go to Richard Hall (the original 1988 chronology from UFOE II), Dan Wilson (archive researcher), and Jean Waskiewicz (online NICAP DBase [NSID]. You will note the many foreign reports that we are now being able to access. Our special thanks to Dan Wilson for getting those to us. As more come in, this page will be updated. Previous chronologies (1947 to 1969) involved the expertise of two other team members: William Wise (Project Blue Book Archive) and Brad Sparks (Comprehensive Catalog of Project Blue Book Unknowns). Bob Gribble’s entries are those filed with the National UFO Reporting Center in Seattle, Washington, now operated by Peter Davenport. Trace cases are now being entered with the help of Ted Phillips, Center for Physical Trace Research and retrofitted into previous chronologies as time permits.

Feb.16, 1988; Rosehill area of Willenhall, England
Time not given. Two police officers saw a very large spinning oval-shaped UFO with flashing red and green lights around its circumference in the Rosehill area of Willenhall, England. It made no sound and flew off quickly toward the southeast. Two more cops saw the same or a similar UFO from Walsall. Their reports were sent to the Ministry of Defence. (Sources: Gary Heseltine, UFO Magazine (UK), July 2003, p. 10, citing Nicholas Redfern, A Covert Agenda, p. 165; Timothy Good, The UFO Report 1990, p. 23).

March 4, 1988; Eastlake, OH
8:35 p.m. local. Coast Guard witnesses, large illuminated ellipse hovering over Lake Erie, landing on ice. Smaller triangular objects emerged, zipped around independently (UFO Evidence II, Section I).

March 12, 1988; Edwards AFB (near), CA
Ground radar case.”

My comment: The 24 January 1988 Gulf Breeze, Florida, case has been exposed as a hoax by several well-known UFO researchers.

THE OBJECT HAD A WHITE LIGHT AND WAS APPROX. 1/4 MILE UP. [Deleted] WAS UNABLE TO DETERMINE HOW FAR OUT IT WAS. THIS UNIT SENT 2 CREWMEMBERS TO INVESTIGATE. BEFORE THEY ARRIVED O/S, WE RCVD 2 MORE CALLS RPTNG THAT THE OBJECT HAD APPARENTLY DISPERSED 3-5 SMALLER FLYING OBJECTS THAT WERE ZIPPING AROUND RATHER QUICKLY. THESE OBJECTS HAD RED, GREEN, WHITE AND YELLOW LIGHTS ON THEM THAT STROBED INTERMITTENTLY. THEY ALSO HAD THE ABILITY TO STOP AND HOVER IN MID-FLIGHT. WHEN MOBILE 02 GO O/S, THEY RPTD THE SAME ACTIVITY. THEY WATCHED THE OBJECTS FOR APPROX. 1 HOUR BEFORE RPTNG THAT THE LARGE OBJECT WAS ALMOST ON THE ICE. THEY RPTD THAT THE ICE WAS CRACKING AND MOVING ABNORMAL AMOUNTS AS THE OBJECT CAME CLOSER TO IT. THE ICE WAS RUMBLING AND THE OBJECT LIT MULTI-COLOR LIGHTS AT EACH END AS IT APPARENTLY LANDED. THE LIGHTS ON IT WENT OUT MOMENTARILY AND THEN CAME ON AGAIN. THEY WENT OUT AGAIN AND THE RUMBLING STOPPED AND THE ICE STOPPED MOVING. MOBILE 02 RPTD THAT 1 OBJECT WAS MOVING TOWARD THEM AT A HIGH SPEED AND LOW TO THE ICE. MOBILE 02 BACKED DOWN THE HILL THEY HAD BEEN ON AND WHEN THEY WENT BACK TO THE HILL, THE OBJECT WAS GONE. THEY RPTD THAT THE OBJECTS COULD NOT BE SEEN IF THEY TURNED OFF THERE LIGHTS. ONE OF THE SMALL OBJECTS TURNED ON A SPOTLIGHT WHERE THE LARGE OBJECT HAD BEEN BUT MOBILE 02 COULD NOT SEE ANYTHING, AND THEN THE OBJECT SEEMED TO DISAPPEAR. ANOTHER OBJECT APPROACHED MOBILE 02 APPROX. 500 YDS. OFFSHORE ABOUT 20 FT. ABOVE THE ICE, AND IT BEGAN MOVING CLOSER AS MOBILE 02 BEGAN FLASHING ITS HEADLIGHTS, THEN IT MOVED OFF TO THE WEST.

3. THE CREWMEMBERS WERE UNABLE TO IDENTIFY ANY OF THE OBJECTS USING BINOCULARS AND AFTER CONTACTING LOCAL POLICE AND AIRPORTS, THIS UNIT WAS UNABLE TO IDENTIFY THE OBJECTS, AND RECALLED MOBILE 02.BTTOR-03:05:14:44”

Text by NICAP.org:
“On March 26, 1988, two civilian witnesses to the Eastlake UFOs (W1 and her husband W2) who were on the beach with the Coast Guard March 4, 1988 were interviewed. The following is a partial transcript of that interview, conducted by Dale Wedge (DW) and Rick Dell’Aquila (RD). Several other witnesses have also been [interviewed] and photographic evidence has been obtained. To date, however, the Coast Guard has refused further information or interviews of its personnel concerning the UFO sighting that night near the CEI electric power plant. The investigation continues.”

UFO Case Directory (Close Encounters):
“Eastlake Close Encounter
March 4, 1988
Eastlake, Ohio”

(NICAP.org)

“Fran Ridge:
March 4, 1988; Eastlake, Ohio
8:35 p.m. local. This is a very interesting close encounter and one of FUFOR’s top cases. And, this one may have a nuclear connection. A huge, gunmetal gray, football-shaped object that was rocking back and forth was first observed by five people. Then the object began moving; swinging one end toward the shore and descending. The witnesses became frightened, ran back to their car and fled. When they got home, the object was still visible from a window that faced the lake. The object moved out over the ice and continued to descend, with red and blue lights now flashing in sequence along its lower edge. At one point triangular objects darted around the parent craft, then headed east toward the Perry nuclear power plant. One witness called the Eastlake police to report a UFO, and was finally referred to the Coast Guard. Coast Guard personnel saw the object and reported that it appeared to be landing on the lake.”

NICAP.org presents a U.S. government (U.S. Coast Guard) document that pertains to the case.

UFO Case Report (E-mail):
“Subject: MacMillan Pass,
NWT/Yukon Border, Canada, Mid July 1988”

By Joan Woodward, Animal Reaction Specialist, 4 April 2006
(NICAP.org)

The whole UFO case report:
“Animal Reaction Feature:
Three men were transporting horses in a high-sided, open topped truck to the MacMillan Pass summit. Arriving in the afternoon at the unloading site, one of the men took his camera and walked 600 feet or so away to take a photograph of mountains to the south. As he looked through the viewfinder he heard an extremely loud fluttering sound approaching from behind and above.

After getting a photograph of the object, the witness ran toward the truck. The horses, not yet unloaded, were panicked. They were trying to jump out of the truck, and the two ‘outfitters’ were desperately trying to calm them and to keep them from injuring themselves. Eventually the horses did calm. The outfitters did not see the unknown object, but commented that they had never before seen the horses react in this way.

The Sighting:
When the witness heard the loud sound approaching behind and above him (putting the unknown about 600-700 feet from the horses), he kept one eye on the viewfinder and caught a glimpse of the object passing above him out of the corner of his other eye. Then, almost instantly, he caught the object in the viewfinder as it rapidly flew over the valley in front of him. It appeared to slow, and he snapped a picture.  The object wavered and turned to the right and accelerated. It became silent as it changed direction. It disappeared into the distance flying up the valley.

Martin Jasek analyzed the photograph, which shows an object with a domed top and a rectangular-looking bottom.* Jasek’s calculated angular size of the object in the photograph is 0.28° (0.55 moon diameter).

Duration of the sighting was in seconds.  The unknown’s altitude when over the witness’s head was estimated as 1500-1800 feet. The peak visually nearest the unknown object (in the photograph) is about 4000 m (13,000 feet) away (email, Jasek to Woodward, March 22, 2006 and April 20, 2006).

No EM or physiological effects were reported.

Jan. 4, 1992; Saga Prefecture, Japan
Late at night a farmer that had experienced strange cattle mutilations in the past was awakened by the sound of his dog barking. The farmer went to investigate and upon entering the cow shed saw a small white ‘object’ resembling a jellyfish with numerous tentacle-like protrusions coming out of its bottom. The ‘object’ was floating in the air; it then drifted outside where it vanished. A cow was discovered on the floor. It had a badly broken leg. (Source: Jenny Randles, Peter A. Hough, World Best True UFO Stories)

March 13, 1992; Bellevue, WS
10:00 AM. Mr. Hooker, the chief photographer for WFRV-TV, videotaped a cigar-shaped UFO in Bellevue, Wisconsin, which is a suburb of Green Bay. The UFO traveled from right to left in the frame, passing behind a windmill. Its estimated altitude was 25,000 feet, and it had a speed of 7,000 mph. (Source: Timothy Good, Alien Update, p. 257).

April 28, 1992; Lajas, Puerto Rico
A jet aircraft tentatively identified as a U.S. Air Force F-14 Tomcat was seen pursuing a domed disc-shaped UFO. The UFO would make multiple stops, and as the jet closed in the saucer split in half. The top half flew off toward the southwest and the other half flew off to the east. The F-14 jet remained circling in the area, and then flew off to the east. (Source: Timothy Good, Alien Update,
p. 30).

June 5, 1992; near Wanaque Reservoir, NJ
10:50 PM. Strange lights were seen and videotaped. The lights maneuvered about the sky, and faded in and out. Wanaque Reservoir has been the scene of many repeated UFO sightings, especially in the 1960s. (Source: Paul Ferrughelli, Computer Catalogue of UFO Reports, 1988-1994).

June 10, 1992; Coatesville, PA
4:30 PM. Several workers at the Lukens Steel Company plant saw a disc-shaped UFO land on the factory grounds around quitting time. The security guard said that the object touched down briefly and then took off in the direction of the old Coatesville Hospital. The company, a defense contractor, refused to let UFO investigators talk with any of the witnesses or answer further questions about what they saw. Attempts to set up interviews outside of the plant were also unsuccessful. (Thomas Carey, MUFON; West Chester Daily Local News, June 12, 1992.)

Aug. 29, 1992; Mount Seymour, British Columbia
2:30 AM. Three cylinders were seen in the sky at close range after a home burglar alarm system and lights were effected. The policeman witness was unable to wake his wife, but their baby reacted to the close encounter, and their dog became sick. The incident lasted 30 minutes. (Sources: Lorne Goldfader, Alien Update, p. 280; Lumieres dans la Nuit, issue 318).

Sept. 17, 1992; north of Gardner, CO
1:30 PM. A 12-foot long metallic object with stubby wings, and a clear dome or cupola, buzzed UFO investigator Christopher O’Brien and his partner while driving seven miles north of Gardner. It made no sound. (Source: Christopher O’Brien, The Mysterious Valley, p. 54).

Dec. 24, 1992; southwest of Monroe, LA
6:00 PM. Twenty civilian witnesses and police southwest of Monroe, Louisiana watched a silent, boomerang shaped UFO with bright beams of light pass over cars in a forested area and bounce up and down for six minutes. The object was videotaped by one of the witnesses, a 39-year-old man. (Source: W. L. Garner, Jr., MUFON UFO Journal, November 1993).”
