UFO News Article:
“Flying Saucer Reports Ignored”

12 July 1965
(Zanesville Times Recorder, Ohio)

Source: NewspaperArchive.com

The whole article:
“The Air force refused to get alarmed Monday over a rash of recent claims of flying saucer sightings over Portugal, the South Pole, Japan and Latin America.

A spokesman for the Air Force, which keeps track of reports of unidentified flying objects (UFO’s), said it had no evidence of unexplained activity.

He added, as the Air Force has in the past, that most such claims have turned out upon scientific examination to be natural phenomena, weather balloons or meteors common in summer months.

On the other hand, a spokesman for the National [Investigations] Committee on Aerial Phenomena—a non-government research organization—said that UFO sightings have shown their biggest increase since 1957. Richard Hall, acting director [of] the non-profit outfit, said: ‘It is interesting that the Air Force is unable to find a pattern because it is staring them in the face.’

The latest flying saucer report came Monday from Oporto, Portugal, where a villager and wife said they saw an object overhead which looked like a deep dish turned ‘upside down.’ ”

My comment:
12 July 1965 was a Monday – but I do not know if the Oporto (or Porto, Portugal) UFO incident occurred on 12 July or 5 July 1965.

UFO News Article:
“ ‘CIGAR’ PASSES A FEW HUNDRED
FEET ABOVE NORWEGIAN SHIP”

27 December 1965
(Moss Dagblad, Norway)

Source: waterufo.net

NOTE: This blog post inexplicably disappeared from the blog. Some of the blog posts do not show on the blog when they are transferred over to “Older Posts.” But all the blog posts (click the date) can be found in the “BLOG ARCHIVE.”

Text by waterufo.net:
“One of the most interesting sightings of 1965 occured [sic] at the island of Santa Maria in the Azores on July 9th (1965) when a cigar-shaped object flew over at 20,000 ft. and stopped all the electric clocks at the airport for a period of 45 minutes. (See Flying Saucer Review, September/ October 1965, page 24. Also Daily Express of July 12 and Fate magazine of February 1966.)

Gordon Creighton has translated from the Norwegian newspaper Moss Dagbled [sic] of December 27, 1965, the following remarkable account of another sighting which took place not many miles S.W. of the Azores three days before and may relate to the self-same UFO.

Chief Mate Torgrim Lien of the T.T. Jawesta, owned by the Jahr Shipping Company, had a curious experience while his ship was en route last summer from Puerto La Cruz, Venezuela, to the Canary Islands. Lien saw a so-called ‘flying saucer’ only 200 metres above the ship. The incident took place in the North Atlantic on July 6, and a report on it was sent to various authorities, including the Geophysical Institute in Bergen. This report has never been published in any newspaper until now... The report is considered to be a very good one.

THE REPORT (from Ship’s Log)

T.T. Jawesta. North Atlantic. July 8, 1965. Report regarding unidentified flying object. On Tuesday, July 6, 1965, while en route from Puerto La Cruz, Venezuela, to Santa Cruz de Tenerife in the Canary Islands, at 2152 hours GMT, the ship’s position being 24° 40’ N 31°15’ W, with wind from N.E., strength 5. Low cloud ceiling travelling with the wind. Barometer 1023. Temperature 23° Celsius.

‘At 2152 GMT (1852 ship’s time), the look-out on the port side, of the bridge reported a bright object in the sky moving in a northerly direction. When I got around to the port side, I saw an intense blue, fiery tongue which was approaching the ship at tremendous speed. I ran to the telephone and rang the captain, and without waiting for an answer, I seized binoculars and ran out on to the starboard side and saw the object through the binoculars as it passed over the ship. It passed straight abaft of the ship and at a height of from 200 to 400 metres, under the low clouds.

‘It was bright like a star, and the moonlight was shining through between the low clouds, and I could clearly see the outlines of the upper part of it. Its shape was that of a cigar, and I could clearly see a row of square windows and the faint golden-orange coloured light from inside it. There was no sign of wings or rudder. The object had a bluish tongue of fire behind it, which was most concentrated near the tail, fanning out a little further back.

‘A little farther back still, behind the body, I could see a tremendous number of globes, and from every globe there was streaming out a blue beam, away from the body.

‘The length of the fiery tongue would, I should think, have been about 100 metres. The object seemed to be far bigger than any aircraft known up to this present day.

‘Its speed was tremendous and it was visible for about 30 to 40 seconds. It was moving at the time in N-S direction, its approximate course being 180°.

‘Despite its enormous speed and the closeness of its passage, we could not hear the least sound from it.

‘The lookout on the port side, seaman Hernandez Ambrosio, maintained that it seemed as though the object had come up out of the sea and that it was travelling northwards and then suddenly changed course towards us.

‘The helmsman, ordinary seaman Narciso Gulllén, saw the object just after it had passed over the ship. And on the poop, fitter Juan Hernandez and mess-hand Ignacio Suarez also saw it. Their accounts tally with mine.

‘I can say with complete certainty that it was no question of an aircraft of conventional type, or rocket, or meteor, or ball lightning.

‘I shall be glad to hear the opinion of an expert on this phenomenon.

(Signed) Torgrim Lien, Chief Mate, on duty at the time.

‘The report is confirmed by a number of the ship’s crew who themselves also saw the peculiar flying object. The report was accompanied by a sketch, which, however, we unfortunately did not find clear enough for reproduction in our newspaper. The original report and sketch were sent to the Geophysical Institute at Bergen by the ship’s Captain, H. A. Trovik.

‘What the Institute’s reply about it was, we do not know at present.’

Credits to Dr. P. M. H. Edwards and to Nils J. Jacobsen who each supplied a copy of the original news item.

UFO Article (Blog):
“UAP dives at car - the 27 July 1965 Carnarvon,
Western Australia – incident”

By Keith Basterfield, 17 February 2015
(UFOs – scientific research, Campbelltown,
New South Wales, Australia)

Quote from the article:
“NICAP version of the Carnarvon incident:

‘Australian encounter.

During the first week of August, two residents of Nedlands, West Australia jumped from their car, fearing a UFO was about to hit it. It was close to 8pm, and Dr Antonin Kulka, formerly a physician in Europe, and Mrs Audrey Lawrence were driving near Carnarvon when a flying object dived towards their headlights. Dr Kulka hurriedly stopped and switched off the lights. As he and Mrs Lawrence ran to the side of the road, the UFO stopped and hovered over the highway.

‘It was rocking gently’ Dr Kulka said later. ‘And its orange color as it dived had changed to a fluorescent green, glow.’

The doctor's bull terrier, usually first out of the car when it stopped, was crouched in the back seat, hackles up. It refused to budge.

Dr Kulka said the object was shaped like a ‘squashed football.’ ‘I had the fear that whatever it was, it was not man-made’ he reported after the UFO had left the scene.

The sighting appeared partly confirmed by resident Ron Butler owner of nearby Mooka station. Butler said that his entire camp had been lit up by a greenish glow when ‘something’ passed over it, though he could not be sure of the time.’

(The source of the NICAP article, which appeared on page 4 of the Aug-Sep 1965 issue of the NICAP ‘The UFO Investigator’ newsletter, was not given.)

Details from McDonald’s interview:

James E McDonald’s hand written notes (courtesy of Dr Michael Swords’ file collection) showed that McDonald interviewed both witnesses by telephone on 4 July 1967. His notes included the following information, which greatly expands on the NICAP material.”

UFO News Article:
“Youth Says He Saw UFO Land”

19 July 1965
(The Spokesman-Review, Spokane, Washington)

The whole article:
“Latin Americans watched for flying saucers Sunday as reports of a landing spread across Latin America.

A youth was reported as saying he saw a four-legged object touch down for two minutes in broad daylight Saturday (17 July 1965) on a beach just across the River Plata in Uruguay.

He was quoted in Buenos Aires as saying the object shot skywards in a blinding flash after a tug hooted a siren.

One of several Uruguayans who claimed to have seen the object on Honda Beach said it had a circular center, with flattened, oval extensions on either side.

A Roman Catholic review, commenting on the recent spate of strange sightings in Latin America, said if there had been visitors from other worlds one could be glad that they did not appear to harbour sinister intentions.

The description by the Uruguayan tallied with a photograph published here on the front page on Sunday’s tabloid newspaper El Mundo. It was claimed to have been taken as an unidentified object hovered over a gas plant in the southern city of Bahia Blanca (Argentina).

El Mundo said it was submitting the negatives to local scientific authorities for study to dispel doubts and to further scientific investigation.

Meanwhile, new reports of sightings of unidentified flying objects over Buenos Aires during the night were received at newspaper offices, already deluged by reports of a widely seen phenomenon Friday night (16 July 1965).”

UFO Public TV Discussion Programme:
“Theater for Ideas - Roach family UFO Sighting”

By Terry Doran (producer, host), 1976
(Unknown U.S. TV channel)

Source: Internet Archive (archive.org), San Francisco, California

Three members of the Roach family recount a UFO sighting that occurred in Arcola, Indiana (located just to the west of Fort Wayne), in June or July 1965, at around 9:00 p.m.

The discussion about when the UFO incident occurred can be found at 10:30.

The cylindrical shaped, extremely large UFO (larger than an airliner) had windows that were illuminated from the inside, a very bright white headlight on the bottom and bright red and green lights on top. All the lights were steady. The unknown object manoeuvred in the same general area for a long time.

The family and at least one of their neighbours called the authorities (the airport and sheriff) to find out if there was aircraft activity in the area at the time. There was no aircraft activity in the area during the time the UFO was sighted, according to the authorities.

NOTE: At least one of the other “Theater for Ideas” TV discussion programmes was aired on WANE-TV (Fort Wayne, Indiana), according to archive.org.

UFO Report:
“The 1965 UFO Chronology”

Created: 12 July 2006
Updated: 20 March 2017
(NICAP.org)

Quote from the UFO report (the introduction):
“This year encompasses more recognized incidents in one group than any other year I am aware of, other than 1952. To name a few: The  May 6 Philippine Sea radar case, the July 3  E-M case at Antarctica, the Aug. 3 Santa Ana/Rex Heflin photo incident, the Aug. 2 (or 3rd) Tulsa, OK/Alan Smith photo, the Aug. 19 Cherry Creek, NY, trace case, the Sept. 2/3 Exeter, NH close encounter, and the famous Edwards AFB encounter of Oct. 7. All this followed by the Northeast Power Grid Failure of November 9th. Our thanks for these chronologies must go to our documentation team: Richard Hall (the original chronology from UFOE II), Rebecca Wise (Project Blue Book Archive), Dan Wilson (archive researcher), Brad Sparks (Comprehensive Catalog of Project Blue Book Unknowns), and Jean Waskiewicz (online NICAP DBase). This chrono also documents the 1965 flap near Virginia.

“Jesuit Astronomer sees flying Saucers
1965 Argentina”
(not the article’s headline)

Volume LXVIII, Number 13, 22 July 1965
(Catholic Transcript)

Source: ufonewspaper.blogspot.com

The whole article:
“ A Jesuit priest-astronomer here said he has seen unidentified flying objects — ‘flying saucers’ — in Argentine skies.

Father Benito Reyna, S.J., is professor of mathematics at Salvador University in Buenos Aires and an astronomer with more than 30 years experience.

THE FIRST TIME I saw UFOs, I was in Cordoba,’ Father Reyna told newsmen. ‘With the help of my telescope I was able to follow their flight clearly and to note their shape and color, predominently [sic] white, yellow, red and blue hues.

‘Then last March I saw them on two successive nights in San Miguel. At that time Echo II was orbiting the earth and I believe the crew of the flying saucers was closely following the U.S. man-made satellite to study its characteristics.”

“Numerous Personnel of the Antarctic bases of three nations: Argentina, Chile and Great Britain, in conditions of optimum visibility, observed (on 3 July 1965) the maneuvers of an unidentified ‘Flying Object.’ So state official communications from the area, including one from the Secretary of the Navy of our country. Independently, the ‘Clarin’ has communicated directly with the Decepcion Base, obtaining from the base commander the details of the sighting.

Santiago, Chile. 6 (Cables of AP AFP Reuter, ANSA y ‘Clarin Agency’) Argentine, British and Chilean military and scientific personnel sighted an unidentified flying object which gave off or glowed with a white light, at high altitude and came at considerable speed in a Southeast direction. The release indicates the object flew a zig-zag path and appeared to hover momentarily suspended in the air. The information caused commotion, when released to the public.”
