UFO News Article:
“AIRSHIP STORIES.”

16 April 1897
(Deseret Evening News, Great Salt Lake City, Utah)

Source: University of Utah, Salt Lake City, Utah

Quote from the article:
“People in Kansas, Nebraska, Illinois and Iowa seem to have been agitated lately over the appearance of something they believe to be an airship, and others a star. A farmer living in the vicinity of Sioux City, Iowa has given publicity to a story to the effect that he, about midnight on the 3rd (April 1897) of this month saw a strange light in a cornfield. He knew there was no house there. As he came nearer he saw a cigar-shaped object about 35 feet long and under it a gondola. The captain of the craft, the farmer says, suddenly discovered him, gave an order and away went the airship.”

UFO Case Report:
“Subject: Early Airship in Vincennes Sky,
April 16, 1897”

24 June 2007
(NICAP.org)

NICAP.org presents a The Valley Advance (Vincennes, Indiana) news article (dated 18 March 1980).

Quote from the article:
“Unidentified flying objects are nothing new for the people of Vincennes. In 1897 a mysterious airship passed over the city twice on the night of Friday, April 16. According to the Vincennes Morning Commercial, the airship first appeared about nine o’clock, traveling along the extreme eastern portion of the horizon: A sphere of golden light was first seen in the vicinity of the Union Depot, from down in the city. Those near the ship claimed they could clearly see the dark lines of its car, although no passengers were observed.

From his doorway, where he had gone to look at his thermometer, Col. Ewing saw the light, which he at first thought was a falling star, but as it moved so slowly, soon became convinced that it was the inevitable airship. Ewing watched it for about four minutes.

Anton Simon noticed a ball of fire, moving in a north-westerly to southeasterly course, which he later realized was an airship.”

Col. Ewing and Anton Simon’s airship witness reports are similar to contemporary UFO witness reports.

UFO Intelligence Summary:
“Subject: UFOs & Trains”

By Francis Ridge, 7 January 2015 (Updated: 16 January 2015)
(NICAP.org)

Quote from the intelligence summary:
“My interest in trains and UFOs stems from at least four things:
1) I investigated the L&N train incident in 1973.
2) UFO sightings involving trains, especially close encounters, are rare.
3) Most modern train engines are diesel powered and there has been some interest in the fact that conventional engines of all types are affected by UFOs and diesels had not been.
4) And extremely interesting is the fact that ALL of the U.S. incidents happened in the midwest!”

On 15 April 1897, a train (running at 65 km/h) going towards Quincy (Missouri) was outdistanced by a UFO, according to Ridge.
