March 21, 1966. Hillsdale , Michigan (BBU)

10:32, 11 p.m.-4:30 a.m. 17 Hillsdale College students including Barbara Kohn [Cole?] and Cynthia Poffenberger saw a football-shaped object with red-green-white pulsating lights descend from the NE pass close to their dorm then disappear to the S as if crashing to the ground, then return at 11 p.m. William Van Horn, Civil Defense Director and rated commercial pilot, and police arrived and conducted a ground search 1/2 to 2 miles away to the E but found nothing until Van Horn reached the college dorm where he, using binoculars, and [87?] students saw a maneuvering lighted 20-25 ft object on or near the ground about 1,500-1,700 ft away to the E, with a dirty-white light on the left and dim orange on the right, which brightened after 10 mins to white and red and began to rise at a rate of 25-30 ft/min to a height of 100-150 ft (about 3-6 mins), stopped momentarily then descended and repeated the motion several times. At one point on a descent a ‘convexed’ surface (between?) the lights could be seen. Radiation was later detected at the landing area about 330 to 600 microroentgens/hr [milliroentgens/hr ?], roughly 10-60x background level, and possible boron contamination. UFO News Article: “Civil Defense’s UFO Probe Explained By Its Director”

“ ‘It is dangerous to the welfare of the nation for our government to try to ridicule and harass people. This was what was done during the local UFO excitement earlier in the year. I believe we have made our point. The University of Colorado now has been assigned to look more thoroughly into the handling of UFO sightings. I don’t think we’ll have any more brushoffs based on the swamp gas contention.’

Willian (Bud) Van Horn, Hillsdale County civil defense director, concluded his talk before the Rotary Club Thursday with this statement.

For 35 minutes he traced the efforts of himself and his colleagues to handle the UFO (Unidentified Flying Objects) reports received at his office since last March and to keep the community from being ridiculed.

He was especially vehement in his criticism of Dr. J. Allen Hynek, Northwestern University scientist who made a cursory study here after the Hillsdale College coed sightings on March 21 made headlines throughout the nation.

Since last March there have been at least two other UFO incidents worthy of note by the local CD office, Mr. Van Horn said.

One was from a woman who heard her dog barking at night. She told the CD office that she looked out in time to see a vehicle settling in a field.

Four women in the North Adams-Jerome region had an object orbit their car. It apparently had an effect on the vehicle because the driver put the car into second gear and pressed the accelerator to the floorboard, yet could develop a speed of only 20 miles an hour. The four ran to a nearby house occupied by five persons. All nine looked out to see a vehicle hovering around the barn.

Mr. Van Horn said his Civil Defense organization made extensive investigations of all reports both during and since March. He told about finding radioactivity in places where UFO’s had been reported, of pure boron found in water, of blips on Air Force radar screens (later denied by the AF) and of unusual metal shavings found in a field less than a month ago.

Mr. Van Horn said the government has no business trying to keep people quiet about UFO sightings. He said that the 24-page report he issued to disprove Dr. Hynek’s swamp gas claims has never been rebutted by the Air Force or Dr. Hynek.

A different attitude on the part of the government is now indicated, the speaker said. The investigative work done here by the local CD has helped to bring this about, Mr. Van Horn feels.”

My comment:

This is a very interesting article about some of the 1966 UFO sightings in the Hillsdale, Michigan, area (South East Michigan). The article, among other things, discusses UFO cases that involve animal reaction (dog)/UFO landing, electromagnetic (EM) interference with a car engine and radioactivity.

The report below sounds very similar to the March 20, 1952 sighting at Centerville, Maryland, by A.D. Hutchison of the CIA. This object took a vertical ‘jump’.

While I’d been in California, Colonel Dunn had received a call from General Samford’s office. It seems that a few nights before, one of the top people in the Central Intelligence Agency was having a lawn party at his home just outside Alexandria, Virginia. A number of notable personages were in attendance and they had seen a flying saucer. The report had been passed down to Air Force intelligence, and due to the quality of the brass involved, it was ‘suggested’ that I get to Washington on the double and talk to the host of the party. I was at his office before 5:00 P.M. and got his report.

About ten o’clock in the evening he and two other people were standing near the edge of his yard talking; he happened to be facing south, looking off across the countryside. He digressed a bit from his story to explain that his home is on a hilltop in the country, and when looking south, he had a view of the entire countryside. While he was talking to the two other people he noticed a light. He had assumed it was an airplane and had casually watched it, but when the light got fairly close, the CIA man said that he suddenly realized there wasn’t any sound associated with it. If it were an airplane it would have been close enough for him to hear even above the hum of the guests’ conversations. He had actually quit talking and was looking at the light when it stopped for an instant and began to climb almost vertically. He said something to the other guests, and they looked up just in time to see the light finish its climb, stop, and level out. They all watched it travel level for a few seconds, then go into a nearly vertical dive, level out, and streak off to the east.

Most everyone at the party had seen the light before it disappeared, and within minutes several friendly arguments as to what it was had developed, I was told. One person thought it was a lighted balloon, and a retired general thought it was an airplane. To settle the arguments, they had made a few telephone calls. I might add that these people were such that the mention of their names on a telephone got quick results. Radar in the Washington area said that there had been no airplanes flying west to east south of Alexandria in the past hour. The weather station at Bolling AFB said that there were no balloons in the area, but as a double check the weather people looked at their records of high altitude winds. It couldn’t have been a balloon because none of the winds up to 65,000 feet were blowing from west to east – and to be able to see a light on a balloon, it has to be well below 65,000 feet; the man from CIA told me that they had even considered the possibility that the UFO was a meteor and that the had been due to some kind of an atmospheric distortion. But the light had been in sight too long to be a meteor. He added that an army chaplain and two teetotaler guests had also seen the light jump.

There wasn’t much left for me to do when I finished talking to the man. He and his guests had already made all of the checks that I’d have made. All I could do was go back to Dayton, write up his report, and stamp it ‘Unknown.’ ”

Project Blue Book listed the case [BBU 1074] as “Unknown.”

          Langley Air Force Base, Virginia

Captain George P. Arns, Hq 47th  Bomb Wing, and I were flying a

T-11 aircraft, number 41-27496 from Cleveland, Ohio to Langley 

Air Force Base, Virginia, 11 Feb 51, when an unusual flying object 
was sighted near Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.

A cold front cloud buildup had been encountered southeast of Pittsburgh that could not be topped or penetrated so we changed our flight plan to land at Greater Pittsburgh Airport.

As we approached Pittsburgh from the South at approximately 5,000 feet, a brilliant lighted object was seen high to the right (1 o’clock high), flying a reciprocal course (approx South) to ours. This sighting occurred between 0300 and 0315 EST. At first we thought an aircraft was on fire because of the brilliance and comet-like appearance and yellow to orange flame coloration of the object. However, as the object approached a 3 o’clock high position, regular, one to two pulsations of the [flame] was noted, which continued until the object passed out of sight. Both of us thought it was a jet because of the speed, however, neither of us have ever seen a pulsating flame emitted from a jet at night. The sighting reminded me of buzz-bombs that I had seen many times in Belgium during the last war. However, the buzz-bomb flame was only  a fraction of the size, and was continuous. The object definitely was in excess of five (5) miles from our position. This estimate was based on the location of the cloud buildup on our right several miles, over which the object flew and disappeared from sight. The cloud buildup was between 12,000 and 15,000 feet high (estimate).

The sky was clear and well illuminated by a bright moon above the clouds, affording continuous unobstructed observation of the object for approximately one minute prior to disappearing from sight.

We landed at Pittsburgh at 0330 hours.

Captain [Arns] is not available to sign this statement because he is presently on leave.

Gedeon, while flying a T-11 aircraft from Cleveland, Ohio, to Langley AFB, saw an unusual flying object near Pittsburgh, Pa. The object had a bright comet-like appearance of yellow to orange colored flame. It was flying above the plane on a reciprocal course and as it approached one to two second pulsations of the flame were noted. These pulsations continued until the object passed out of sight. The sky was clear and illuminated by a bright moon which afforded continuous observation of the object for approximately one minute prior to disappearing from sight.”

UFO Footage: UFO Filmed During Recording of the Movie, “Arlington Road”

This daytime footage seemingly shows a self-luminous, oval shaped object.

The unknown object does not resemble any known conventional aircraft.

The film was released on 9 July 1999 (U.S.).

Filming location: Houston, Texas.

My sole purpose in writing this paper is to report and document, as thoroughly and as accurately as possible, the existence of a specific group of UFO reports known as the ‘E-M’ cases. There are literally dozens of instances where the presence of an unidentified flying object coincided with disturbances or complete disruption in the normal operation of various electrical equipment. If some correlation really exists between the presence of a UFO and unusual interference with operating electrical equipment, it would be extremely significant. Many UFO enthusiasts along with such prominent UFO investigating organizations as the Aerial Phenomena Research Organization in Tucson, Arizona and the National Investigations Committee on Aerial Phenomena in Washington, D. C., believe that some type of electro-magnetic (E-M) effect from UFOs causes the interference in electrical apparatus as recorded in a number of UFO reports. The stalling of automobiles, the [dying] out of headlights, and interference with radio and TV equipment are examples of these so called E-M effects associated with the presence of a UFO.”
