“Military Report Once Accepted Space ‘Saucers’ ”,
‎4 January 1967 (Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, Pennsylvania)

The article reports on the UFO research work of U.S. Air Force Captain Edward J. Ruppelt, the Air Force’s three UFO projects, Project Sign, Project Grudge and Project Blue Book and the alleged 1948 Project Sign document, “Estimate of the Situation”:

It was Edward J. Ruppelt’s 1956 book that first publicly disclosed the document. The book was cleared by the U.S. Air Force.

Quote from the article:
“Today the Air Force denies that such a document ever existed. But Ruppelt claimed he saw it. It was, he wrote, a thick document printed on legal-size paper, with a black cover with ‘Top Secret’ printed across the cover.”

Ruppelt was the director of Project Blue Book from March 1952 until late 1953.

He was also the director of Project Grudge from late 1951 until
it became Project Blue Book in March 1952, according to the

UFO News Article:
“ ‘Abnormal Radiation’ Reported By Author”

19 January 1956
(Wilmington Morning Star, North Carolina)

The article reports on retired U.S. Air Force Captain Edward J. Ruppelt’s UFO book (published in early 1956):

Quote from the article:
“A new book on flying saucers said today some atomic scientists have detected ‘abnormal radiations’ at the times and in the areas of sighting of unidentified objects in the sky. But it says there is no proof the phenomena are connected.

The author, former Air Force Capt. Edward J. Ruppelt, was for two years chief of the Air Force project for investigation of flying saucer reports.

He said that the data which he gathered on the radiation reports was rejected by the Air Force as containing ‘not enough conclusive evidence.’

‘No one could explain the sudden bursts of radiation, but there was no proof that they were associated with UFO’s,’ Ruppelt said in ‘The Report on Unidentified Flying Objects,’ published by Doubleday & Co.

1. A panel of scientists in January 1953, rejected an unofficial Air Force analysis prepared by a staff headed by Maj. Dewey Fournet, that UFOs were interplanetary space ships. Ruppelt said the space ship conclusion was supported by some air officers ‘at command levels just a notch below’ Maj. Gen. John A. Samford, at the time Air Force director of intelligence.

3. While the Air Force has said officially there is no proof that space ships exist, ‘This conclusion is far from being unanimous among the military and their scientific advisers.’ ”

UFO Book Quote:
“The Report on Unidentified Flying Objects”

By Edward J. Ruppelt, Head of Project Blue Book (1952-1953)

Source: NICAP.org

In Chapter 9 (The New Project Grudge) Ruppelt writes, “UFO’s were seen more frequently around areas vital to the defense of the United States. The Los Alamos-Albuquerque area, Oak Ridge, and White Sands Proving Ground rated high. Port areas, Strategic Air Command bases, and industrial areas ranked next.”

UFO Study Directory:
“The Fournet Motion Study Directory”

Created: October 2006
Updated: 20 August 2016
(NICAP.org)

The whole article:
“Fran Ridge:
In October of 2006 Jan Aldrich brought up the ‘Ten Lost Documents’. Item #1 was the Fournet Motion Study. Brad Sparks had already found the CIA documents that were the key to the puzzle and had identified two of the motion study cases right off. This, then, is the directory for the famous ‘motion study’ by Maj. Dewey Fournet. This study is significant and it is similar to the earlier 1948 ‘Estimate of the Situation’ and illustrates once again the reason why the Extraterrestrial Hypothesis was seriously considered. And as always, the study was not stopped as it went up, but was rejected at the top. As we identify the cases used in the MS we will provide links to them at the bottom of this directory. But first, the history of the Motion Study begins with Captain Edward J. Ruppelt, at that time the head of the Air Force Project Blue Book. (See link below) By March 23, 2009 I had begun work on the UFO Intelligence Summary for the Motion Study cases, the current copy is the end result of that search. This is an on-going project to identify and document all 17 cases listed.

This following formations chart is a new CIA release in 2001 of a better copy of the same chart released by CIA in poor shape in 1978.

Mike Swords:
22 Oct 2006
I came across page 5 and there was part of Dewey Fournet’s famous but not seen ‘motions study’ of UFOs as presented to the Robertson Panel. According to what one can reasonably assume by looking at the page, Dewey presented 17 cases [from which he deduced that UFOs were guided by intelligence and the flight characteristics indicated that the intelligence was beyond ‘us’.] This number rings true as Ed Ruppelt says that Dewey sifted his cases down to between ten and twenty. The page shows arrangements of UFOs in the chosen cases, and given the strong likelihood that most if not all of them were 1952 cases on Dewey’s watch, they might be specifically identifiable. #6 is, for instance, almost certainly, Nash-Fortenberry. Ruppelt gives two of the cases in his book, and a third in the draft copy pre-cutting. These probably could be matched up, too. Has this document already been seen for what it is?, and has someone already identified the 17 cases? .

Jan Aldrich:
Someone should try to identify the cases from the illustrations [which is what we did above - Fran Ridge]. I would expect that one should try to fit modern ones first. Fournet had something is his briefcast call Operation Interloper. Whatever it was it represented cases that he encountered on his own and were not AF cases or were published in other sources like the African Airlines case at Mt Kilaminjaro (sp?). The case count for Operation Interloper was over 20, but Fournet’s briefcase only contain a few of them. Some of the Interloper cases were pre 1947. Fournet told Keyhoe that he should request a complete list of 1952 unknown cases from the AF, he would find best evidence there.”

UFO Article (Blog):
“Military-UFO Encounters”

By Dr. Michael D. Swords, 6 September 2009
(The Big Study)

Quote from the article:
“People would probably be surprised to find out how many unexplainable military-UFO encounters there have been. Many dozens of them have been formally recorded and there are certainly hundreds more. The reason that we know that latter fact is that a large number of retired servicemen have told us. The picture at the right represents something that is unusual in a whole variety of ways. It's meant to visualize an event that occurred at a New Mexican aerial location, wherein the base [Kirtland] had a plane up which was ordered to intercept an unknown object. The pilot did so, according to his report, and then got carried away and fired on the UFO--a definite No-No unless the intruder is clearly perceived to be a threat and the use of weapons does not unduly risk anyone or anything of the citizenry. The pilot landed and gave his report which was written up. This was not sent up the line to higher authorities because of the poor judgement of the pilot involved. However, when the base intelligence officer was visited by the chief officer of the Air Force's UFO project, Edward Ruppelt of Project Blue Book, he told Ruppelt of the 1952 incident and showed him the file. Ruppelt was stunned by the pilot's behavior, let alone the case, and published it [with the pilot's name left anonymous] in his book The Report On Unidentified Flying Objects.”

“Albuquerque Girl Burned by UFO?”

By Kevin D. Randle, 24 January 2017
(A Different Perspective, Cedar Rapids, Iowa)

In this article – Kevin D. Randle exposes the Project Blue Book team and the Project’s chief (1952-1953), Edward Ruppelt.

The article focuses on the 28 April 1964 Sharon Stull case (a probable UFO hoax case).

Edward Ruppelt was not chief of Project Blue Book in 1964.

Quote from the article:
“It was a rare day when the Air Force and the Lorenzens (APRO)
agreed on anything but the Air Force analysis shows their bias in a way that is over the top.”

UFO Case Directory (RADCAT):
“Radar/Visual At Air Force Radar Site
Sept. 1, 1952
Yaak, Montana”

(NICAP.org)

The whole UFO case report:
“Brad Sparks:
Sept. 1, 1952; Yaak, Montana (BBU 2023)
4:45 a.m. Visual sighting by 2 USAF enlisted men, radar tracking by 3 men using FPS-3 radar set. 2 small, varicolored lights became black silhouettes [of ‘dark, cigar-shaped object’?] at dawn, flew erratically. 1 hours. (Berliner; cf. Ruppelt p. 194)

Loren Gross:
A newsman from Oleans, New York, a Mr. Bob Barry, interviewed a S/Sgt. William Kelly who was stationed at the Yaak radar installation in 1953. According to Sgt. Kelly, on one occasion UFOs appeared on the site's radar screens exhibiting changes of direction as many as five times a minute. Some course changes w«re 90 degrees and speeds were measured as high as 1,500 mph. Six blips at one time appeared on the radar scopes and the strange targets came within 10 miles of the GCI site. So close was the indicated range the radar personel left their windowless operations room to check the sky with the naked eye. Sure enough, six objects could be seen in the sky an estimated 10 miles away. When first spotted, the six UFOs were in an in-trail formation, and shortly thereafter the six UFOs changed to an in-line abreast grouping. Finally, the UFOs switched to a vertical stack. Sgt. Kelly said he remembers tracking the UFOs on the radar executing vertical climbs that exceeded the limit of the site's height finding equipment (This was probably 100,000 feet). 19. (UFOs: A History, 1953: Aug-Dec.,  Pg.5; 19. Hall, UFO Evidence, Pg. 85)

Mike Swords:
Ruppelt was very high on this case as it is listed as one of the prime cases brought before and discussed by the Robertson panel (*). James McDonald also has file on it. (Ruppelt probably mis-remembered and put it (book) one month early [it is September 1, instead of August 1).”

U.S. Government UFO Document:
“SUBJECT: Memorandum for Record:
Call to Los Alamos, New Mexico”

15 December 1952
(Project Blue Book, U.S. Air Force, Washington, D.C.)

Source: Fold3.com, Lindon, Utah

The whole text:
“1. On the evening of 15 Dec 1952, Capt E. J. Ruppelt called Mr. Homer T. Gittings, Jr., of 1537B 41st Street, Los Alamos, New Mexico (Tele: 24880). The purpose of the call was to contact Mr. (blacked out name) in regard to some previous data that Capt Ruppelt had obtained about a correlation between the visual sightings of UFO and radiation from unknown sourses. Previous to this, Capt Ruppelt sent Mr. (blacked out name) a registered letter requesting the data, but the letter was returned as unclaimed. Mr. (blacked out name) explained that when the letter arrived, he had been out of town and the post office had gotten mixed up on his instructions to hold any mail and had returned the letter.

2. Although not too much data could be obtained over the telephone, Mr. (blacked out name) did shed some light on some of the questions that had been asked in regard to the correlations. In the first place, a Mr. (blacked out name), Los Alamos, New Mexico, phone 22263, was the person who knew people at Mt. Palomar who had also seen unidentified aerial objects at the same time they had detected some radiation. Contrary to previous beliefs, Mr. (blacked out name) was not there at the time and only heard of the incident through personal letters from these people at Mt. Palomar. Mr. (blacked out name) stated that he was sure that Mr. (blacked out name) could give us the names of the people at Palomar and there is a possibility that they are still there. The other gentleman involved in the sightings at Los Alamos is a (blacked out name). Mr. (blacked out name) stated that between
1 Oct 1951 and 1 Oct 1952 he had picked three or four definite indications of radiation from unknown sources and that several of them had correlated with newspaper articles within two hours. He was not sure how many Mr. (blacked out name) obtained.

3. In describing the nature of the radiation which had been picked up, Mr. (blacked out name) stated that ‘they picked up a vertical component – a particle that penetrated three thin walled tubes and the roof of the building.’ The tubes are 5/8 inches in diameter and 2 inches on center. He stated that they had checked all sources of radiation from the laboratory and that this type of radiation was far out of line for any cosmic activity.

4. Mr. (blacked out name) was asked to obtain more information on the type of equipment that was used to get the radiation, the exact dates and time of all indicated radiation, and a little bit of background on each of the people. He was also told that personnel from Blue Book would try to contact him personally within the next two or three weeks to obtain all of this information.”

“Alaskan Radar Case
January 22, 1952
Nenana, Alaska”

(NICAP.org)

The whole UFO case report:
“Francis Ridge:
Jan. 22, 1952; Nenana, Alaska
This was a an incident involving both ground and airborne radar. Three F-94’s were scrambled to intercept the radar target. The UFO maneuvered and radar indicated it streaked away to the west. The object was tracked at 23,000 feet and clocked at 1500 mph. At first the Air Force claimed this was a weather target. But when you read the documents below you can see they never explained this incident.

Capt. Edward J. Ruppelt:
A month or two after we’d received the report, I was out in Colorado Springs at Air Defense Command Headquarters. I was eating lunch in the officers’ club when I saw an officer from the radar operations section at ADC. He asked me to stop by his office when I had a spare minute, and I said that I would. He said that it was important.”

Wikipedia article: “Clear Air Force Station”:

Quote from the Wikipedia article:
“Clear Air Force Station (‘Clear’ colloq.) is a United States Air Force Station radar station for detecting incoming ICBMs and submarine-launched ballistic missiles[3] to NORAD’s command center and to provide Space Surveillance data to Air Force Space Command’s Space Control Center (SCC). Clear’s AN/FPS-123 Upgraded Early Warning Radar is part of the Solid State Phased Array Radar System (SSPARS) which also includes those at Beale AFB, Cape Cod AFS, RAF Fylingdales and Thule Site J. The ‘historic property’ was one of the Alaska World War II Army Airfields and later a Cold War BMEWS site providing NORAD data to Colorado’s BMEWS Central Computer and Display Facility (CC&DF).

In addition to the ‘original camp area’ with buildings still in use today,[4] areas of the station include the airfield (ICAO: PACL), the ‘SSPARS Site’[5] the technical site (Utilador,[6] BMEWS reflectors, support buildings, power plant), and the composite site (two permanent dormitories, a mess hall, recreation area, and administrative area).[citation needed] In addition to the Air National Guard unit, Clear has active duty USAF, Royal Canadian Air Force, civilian, and contractor personnel.”
