UFO Mailing List Post:
“Newark Airport Radar Information”
From: Colm Kelleher, 1 September 2001
(UFO UpDates, Toronto, Canada)
The whole post:
“On July 25, 2001, NIDS sent a FOIA request to the FAA (Federal
Aviation Administration) requesting radar tapes (Tracon) for the July 14-15, 2001 timeframe around the
Carteret UFO incident. NIDS also requested the tower voice tapes for the same
time period from Newark International Airport.
Prior to receiving the FOIA data, NIDS received a
preliminary analytical report that details unidentified flying objects without
transponders detected on air traffic control radar in the airspace around
Newark International Airport on the night of July 14-15, 2001. The report is
summarized in table form below.
The following points are to be noted:
All times in the report are Zulu time (GMT). Subtract 4
hours to get Carteret time for each data point.
Speed of the different objects is measured in knots
(kts).
EWR refers to Newark International Airport.
_None_ of the objects in the table below had
transponders.
By far the most noteworthy aspect of this
communication is the large number of objects detected that DO NOT have
transponders (all commercial aircraft have transponders) in the airspace around
Newark International at the same time that an estimated seventy eyewitnesses on
the New Jersey Turnpike and a further fifty (estimated) witnesses from Staten
Island reported unidentified lights in the same area of sky.
A request to randomly check for aircraft without
transponders at the same time on a DIFFERENT night produced the result that there
were no objects without transponders in the air around Newark International
airport on that second, randomly chosen, night.
This ‘control’ study lends support to the notion that
such a large profusion of objects without transponders in the air around one of
the busiest international airports in the world is unusual. Secondly, the fact
that multiple objects without transponders were in the same airspace while over
one hundred eyewitnesses on the ground were watching several unidentified objects
over Carteret may be of interest.
In addition, we now have interviews with 13 witnesses
posted on our website:

“UFO tracked by Navy men at electronic range in Fla.”
19 May 1978
(Pacific Stars and Stripes, U.S.A.)
Source: NICAP.org
Quote from the article:
“ ‘I’ve never seen anything like it,’ says Timothy
Collins, a Navy radar technician who tracked an unidentified object over the
Florida sky. ‘And I don’t want to see anything like it again.’
Collins was among at least a dozen workers at the
Navy’s Pinecastle Electronic Warfare Range who said they spotted brightly lit
objects.
Carol Snyder said she and a dozen other base personnel
went to the top of a control tower with binoculars. ‘We saw three very blurry
lights — red, white and green,’ she said, ‘We watched them for about 30
minutes.’ ”

U.S. Government UFO Document:
“SUBJECT: (Unclassified) Radar Sightings of Aerial Phenomena, National Airport, Washington, D.C., 25 July 1952 - SPECIAL INQUIRY”
By Gilbert R. Levy, Chief, Counter-Intelligence
Division,
Directorate of Special Investigations, The Inspector
General,
29 July 1952
(U.S. Air Force, Washington, D.C.)
(U.S. Air Force, Washington, D.C.)
Source: NICAP.org
Document source: bluebookarchive.org
The memorandum was sent to General Carroll.
The whole text of the memorandum:
“1. In light of recent wide publicity concerning
the above subject, I caused a check to be made for the purpose of determining
the basis of recent releases to news media.
2. We were advised by the current Intelligence
Branch, Estimates Division, AFOIN, which has staff responsibility with respect
to these reports, that much of the publicity of the past few days is the result
of a radar sighting of unidentified aerial objects by the Civil Aeronautics Administration
at National Airport at 2115 hours, 25 July 1952. These sightings continued from
2115 hours, 25 July until 0010 hours on 26 July, and were described by radar
operators as ‘good sharp targets.’ They were observed in numbers from four to eight.
3. At 2320 hours, 25 July 1952, two (2) Air
Force F-94s were dispatched from New Castle AFB, Delaware, for the purpose of
intercepting objects which have been sighted by radar. One of the F-94s
reportedly made visual contact with one of the objects and at first appeared to
be gaining on it, but the object and the F-94 were observed on the radar scope
and appeared to be traveling at the same approximate speed. However, when it
attempted to overtake the object, the object disappeared both from the pursuant
aircraft and the radar scope. The pilot of the F-94 remarked of the ‘incredible
speed of the object.’
4. The Director of Intelligence advises that no
theory exists at the present time as to the origin of the objects and they are
considered to be unexplained. Much of the publicity has been based on
authorized news releases by the Air Force.
5. We were informed that any additional
information pertinent to the matter would be furnished OSI.
6. We are at present making no inquiry into the
matter in
the absence of a request from AFOIN under Air Force
Letter
No. 200-2.”

“SUBJECT: Unidentified Flying Objects (UFOs)”
By E. B. LeBailly, Major General, U.S. Air Force,
Director of Information, 28 September 1965
(U.S. Air Force, Washington, D.C.)
(U.S. Air Force, Washington, D.C.)
Source: NICAP.org
The memorandum was sent to Military Director, U.S. Air
Force Scientific Advisory Board.
Quote from the document:
“To date,
the Air Force has found no evidence that any of the UFO reports reflect a
threat to our national security. However, many of the reports that cannot be
explained have come from intelligent and technically well qualified individuals
whose integrity cannot be doubted. In addition, the reports received officially
by the Air Force include only a fraction of the spectacular reports which are
publicized by many private UFO organizations.
Accordingly,
it is requested that a working scientific panel composed of both physical and
social scientists be organized to review Project Blue Book -- its resources,
methods, and findings -- and to advise the Air Force as to any improvements
that should be made in the program in order to carry out the Air Force’s
assigned responsibility.”

“It’s been a long time since I thought about the UFO
sightings in Wytheville. They happened over a six month period starting back in
1987. At the time I had been the news anchor at WSLS for just a few months, but
I also enjoyed reporting from the field.
So when the call came in to the newsroom that people
were seeing something in the sky over Wytheville -- and that some of the
witnesses were credible lawmen -- off I went.”

Operators tracked a total of eight unidentified targets over coastal areas of
southern Florida. Radar site located at Homestead AFB, Florida was stationed by

The case involves radar detection from multiple radar

Canadian Government UFO Article:
“Thematic Guides - Unidentified Flying Objects”
(Library and Archives Canada, Ottawa, Canada)
Quote from the article:
“This guide consists of specific references to
government sources on Unidentified Flying Objects (UFOs).
The National Research Council (NRC) started collecting
reports of sightings of UFOs in 1968. It took over this responsibility from the
Department of National Defence, which transferred extant sighting reports
(dating from 1965) to the NRC. The records consist of index cards on which is
entered information on each sighting, and also reports containing more detailed
accounts of each sighting. The reports and sightings are arranged in
chronological order. Most of the sighting reports were sent to the National
Research Council by the Department of National Defence, the Department of
Transport and the Royal Canadian Mounted Police. The NRC ceased to collect
reports of sightings in August 1995.
This guide was revised in September 2000.”
