UFO Items:
“Three Items Provided by Dr. Thornton Page”
(The Computer UFO Network (CUFON), Seattle , Washington )
In the first item, Dr. Pa ge
writes that when he phoned Dr. Edward U. Condon and informed him that he was
writing up UFOs in the Encyclopedia Britannica (1975 edition) – Condon became
so angry that he threw his phone on the floor and broke it (according to
Condon’s secretary).
Dr. Thornton Page was a member of The Scientific
Advisory Panel on Unidentified Flying Objects (1953) (Robertson Panel).

UFO News Article:
“Area policemen sight 3 UFO’s”
29 December 1973
(Culpeper Star-Exponent, Virginia)
Sources: UFO Research Committee - UFO Newsclipping
Service, Seattle , Washington and AFU.se
The whole article (Page 7):
“ ‘I see it but I don’t believe it!’ said the voice on
the police radio.
The voice belonged to officer Joseph Scalici of the Manassas Park police department and what he
didn’t believe was a light in the southwestern sky that Scalici believes is an
unidentified flying object.
But Scalici was not the only one watching strange
objects in the sky early Friday (28 December 1973) morning. Fauquier deputy
sheriff John Payne and Virginia state trooper
William M. Neal were eyeing a light in the western sky near the Warren-Fauquier County line along Rt. 55.
‘I noticed the light about 4:30,’ said Payne. ‘I was
riding along near Marshall
when l noticed this light moving in the western sky. I followed it to the top
of the mountain here until it stopped. I’ve been watching it for almost two
hours now.’
Trooper Neal was also on the spot and while Payne was
talking Neal was glassing the object through binoculars.
‘See the colors,’ Neal broke in, handing the glasses
to Payne.
Payne and Neal concurred that the object was indeed
giving off colored light at either end of what appeared to be a glowing
circular form. To the left the light was green and to the right it was red. The
lights appeared to be blinking.
Meanwhile, back in Manassas Park ,
Scalici noticed a light in the southwestern sky moving eastward. According to Scalici
this object had also initially been sighted in Fauquier County
and had moved across into Prince William.
‘I saw one light – and then another. They stopped very
high in the sky and then one began to drop. It came down rather quickly and
seemed to hover just above treetop level. The other light remained aloft in the
same position.
‘The lower light hovered for about 15 minutes, then
moved back higher into the sky. Both disappeared momentarily.’
Officer Scalici estimated that the lights were as far
as 15 miles
away and noticed no color.
The Friday morning reports were the first since a rash
of sightings occurred during October all over the East and South.”

UFO News Article:
“But Deputies, Residents Did–
Radar Doesn’t Spot Unidentified Lights in Area”
10 January 1974
(Two Harbors Chronicle
& Times ,
Minnesota )
Sources: UFO Research Committee - UFO Newsclipping
Service, Seattle , Washington and AFU.se
The whole article (Page 13):
“They’ve returned, only this time bigger and better
than ever.
Last October two law enforcement officers saw some
strange, unidentified lights hovering over Pork City Hill in Two Harbors. The
lights, it was noted at the time, could possibly have been some reflection from
the nearby railroad yards.
Last Friday (4 January 1974) night, however, an
unidentified object was seen in the area, by two different groups of persons in
two different areas. The object did not show up on radar.
About 8 p.m. Friday night two deputies of the Lake
County Sheriff’s Department were traveling in the Waldo area several miles
north of Two Harbors when they saw the object.
Deputies Andy Haugan and Fred Defresne were driving on
a county road near Dr. David Armin’s home in Waldo when they spotted four
‘unbelievably bright’ lights in the sky.
They stopped the car and watched them for about 30
seconds. The lights were described as the color and hue of a burning log, or somewhat
of a rust color. The center of each was so bright as nearly being white.
Reflections from clouds was ruled out, and visibility on the cold, cloudless
night was said ot be excellent.
‘Although we saw only the lights, it appeared they
were all on the same object,’ Haugan said. ‘Because as it moved, they remained
the same distance from one another, and in perfect formation.’
‘We turned off the car engine,’ he said. ‘But heard no
noise. The four lights were traveling west, then they banked to the southwest.
At one time it appeared to be about 800 feet over Silver Creek Cliff.’
Upon seeing the object, the deputies radioed to the
Highway Patrol, who in turn contacted the Duluth Air Base which scanned the
entire area with radar.
Haugan, who flys [sic] small aircraft, said even a small plane can be easily
detected in the area once it is over the trees.
The deputies saw two lights on the object’s lower left
side blink and then go out, and shortly after the two remaining lights also
were extinguished.
‘If the lights were all one object, then it was huge,’
Haugan said. ‘It would have made a 747 jet look like a canary.’
‘Fred and I are glad that we both saw it,’ Haugan
said. ‘If I had seen it alone, I would have been afraid to mention it to
anyone.’
But Defresne and Haugan weren’t the only one to see
the lights. The deputies also learned that three other area residents saw an
identical sight while they were snowmobiling on Legler
Lake , which is located near State Road
2, just north of the Marble-Kane
Lake area.
Dwight Moe, Philip Hobeck and his 12-year-old son, saw
the four lights, also the color of a burning log, at about 7:20 p.m. This is
about 40 minutes before the deputies spotted them. Again, these three heard no
noise. They said the lights were traveling in a straight path, but appeared to
be climbing in the sky.
The deputies said they also radioed to the Silver Bay
area of Lake County but no other sightings were
reported. Anyone having more information concerning the lights is asked to
contact the Chronicle or Haugan.
‘Dwight Moe told me he was a disbeliever,’ Haugan
said. ‘As for myself, I guess you’d say I’m not a disbeliever (of UFO’s).
Anyway, all we know at this time for sure is that it remains unidentified.’
‘I’ve been getting a lot of ribbing since we saw it,’
Haugan said. ‘At one service station the attendant kept looking nervously at
the sky.’ ”

“09-September-1998
The text of several official documents mentioning Foo-Fighters and
Foo-Fighter-like phenomena are presented here.
These documents were located, and provided to CUFON,
by Barry Greenwood, veteran researcher, for many years the Editor of the widely
celebrated bulletin Just Cause, co-author of the breakthrough Clear Intent, and
now the Editor of the U.F.O. Historical Review which debuted in June, 1998.
Foo-Fighters are often mentioned in the UFO literature
as being among the first modern era sightings of unidentified aerial objects,
predating as they do the widely known civilian Arnold sighting of June, 1947. Seldom however, is documentary evidence of
the reality and nature of these sightings presented to support mention of the
Foo-Fighters. While the documents
presented herein by no means represent all such material, they are a dramatic
insight into the UFOs of the Second World War, and come from both the European
and Pacific regions.”

Wikipedia article: “United States Army Air Forces”:
Quote from the Wikipedia article:
“The United States Army Air Forces (USAAF or AAF),
informally known as the Air Force,[1] was the aerial warfare service of the
United States during and immediately after World War II (1939/41–1945),
successor to the previous United States Army Air Corps and the direct
predecessor of the United States Air Force of today, one of the five uniformed
military services. The AAF was a component of the United States Army, which in
1942 was divided functionally by executive order into three autonomous forces:
the Army Ground Forces, the Services of Supply (which in 1943 became the Army
Service Forces), and the Army Air Forces. Each of these forces had a commanding
general who reported directly to the Army Chief of Staff.
The AAF administered all parts of military aviation
formerly distributed among the Air Corps, General Headquarters Air Force, and
the ground forces’ corps area commanders, and thus became the first air
organization of the U.S. Army to control its own installations and support
personnel. The peak size of the AAF during the Second World War was over 2.4
million men and women in service and nearly 80,000 aircraft by 1944, and 783
domestic bases in December 1943.[2] By ‘V-E Day’, the Army Air Forces had 1.25
million men stationed overseas and operated from more than 1,600 airfields
worldwide.[3]”
The USAAF was disbanded on 18 September 1947.
Wikipedia article: “United States Air Force”:
Quote from the Wikipedia article:
“The United States Air Force (USAF) is the aerial and
space warfare service branch of the United States Armed Forces. It is one of
the five branches of the United States Armed Forces, and one of the seven
American uniformed services. Initially established as a part of the United
States Army on 1 August 1907, the USAF was formed as a separate branch of the
U.S. Armed Forces on 18 September 1947 with the passing of the National
Security Act of 1947. It is the youngest branch of the U.S. Armed Forces, and
the fourth in order of precedence. The USAF is the largest[13] and most
technologically advanced[14] air force in the world. The Air Force articulates
its core missions as air and space superiority, global integrated ISR, rapid
global mobility, global strike, and command and control.
The U.S. Air Force is a military service branch
organized within the Department of the Air Force, one of the three military
departments of the Department of Defense. The Air Force, through the Department
of the Air Force, is headed by the civilian Secretary of the Air Force, who
reports to the Secretary of Defense, and is appointed by the President with
Senate confirmation. The highest-ranking military officer in the Air Force is
the Chief of Staff of the Air Force, who exercises supervision over Air Force
units and serves as one of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. Air Force components are
assigned, as directed by the Secretary of Defense, to the combatant commanders,
and neither the Secretary of the Air Force nor the Chief of Staff of the Air
Force have operational command authority over them.
Along with conducting independent air and space
operations, the U.S. Air Force provides air support for land and naval forces
and aids in the recovery of troops in the field. As of 2017, the service
operates more than 5,369 military aircraft, 406 ICBMs and 170 military
satellites. It has a $161 billion budget and is the second largest service
branch, with 318,415 active duty personnel, 140,169 civilian personnel, 69,200
Air Force Reserve personnel, and 105,700 Air National Guard personnel.”

Humanoid Reports (HR, occupant sightings, Cat. 7) are
still up. By 1974 the cattle mutilations are becoming a major issue to farmers
in many U.S.
states and by 1979 the phenomena will have claimed the lives of over 10,000
head of cattle. Night-time helicopters are often reported in the vicinity of
mutilated cattle. Helicopter pilots take alternative routes or are flying 500 feet higher in order
to evade angry stockmen with big guns.

instrument penetration training flight. They were at 25,000 feet MSL,
approximately 300 mph
indicated airspeed, (440 kts true air speed), in straight and level flight, and
on a heading of approximately 255 degrees true. The flight instructor sitting
in the right-front seat was the first to sight a single, round, red small area
of light maintaining position at their 1:00 o’clock position and their
altitude. The reporting witness said that everyone ‘…felt it was a UFO and
generally were glad to have finally seen one.’ Its angular diameter was about
the same as half a penny held at arm’s length (approx. 15 min arc diameter).
After receiving permission to deviate from the flight plan the pilot banked
right about thirty degrees to fly directly toward the red light. After about a
minute or more, now on the new heading of 270 degree, the red light suddenly
and unexpectedly flew left directly across the nose of his airplane stopping
abruptly at his 11:00 o’clock position where it remained for several more
minutes. While maintaining this new position it never changed size, shape, or
intensity. Its edge was sharply defined and without any haze or blur. After
about four or five minutes total observation time the light accelerated toward
the West and was gone in about ten seconds; it became progressively smaller
until it was no longer visible. Upon landing the witnesses all completed an
‘incident form’ but never heard anything more about the matter. (Richard

Quote from the article (Page 2):
“Three years ago — on September 10th, 1976 — a
Colusa man, his wife, several of his neighbors, and a handful of other
witnesses claimed they saw an unidentified flying object over Colusa. The case
has since become one of the most well-documented UFO sightings in recent history, but it is a

“UFO Over Colusa? – Bill Pecha’s Story”
13 September 1976
(Colusa Sun-Herald ,
California )
Sources: U.F.O. Newsclipping Service, Seattle , Washington
and AFU.se
The whole article (Pages 1 and 2):
“ ‘It was a nightmarish experience I’ll never forget.
I didn’t believe in UFOs before, but I do now. You’d have to see it to believe
it, but so help me what I saw — and felt — about 1 A .M. Friday
(10 September 1976) outside our house is the truth.’
(10 September 1976) outside our house is the truth.’
That’s what Bill Pecha, Jr., who does machine and
bankout wagon work in his shop at 1650 Wilson Avenue, Colusa, told the
Sun-Herald in describing what happened after the power went off (the power
outage lasted for about nine minutes) while he was watching a Channel 12
television program. His wife and two children were asleep at the time. Said
Pecha:
‘When the power went off I started outside and saw
this huge glowing thing hovering over our house. It looked to me like it was 150 feet across and from 10
to 18 feet
in height shooting out beams of bluish light. It looked like a huge inverted
cup and saucer with the outer brim spinning clockwise and an inner disc
spinning counter clockwise. When I got outside I felt funny. Seemed like all
the hair on my body was being pulled up.
‘There were three of these things, the big one and two
smaller ones on the high power line in back of the ‘Slim’ Davis house. There was no noise, no sounds of
any kind —
just a huge blue halo of light with the big UFO maneuvering about at amazing
speed. I awakened my wife and she and my son and daughter saw the whole thing,
too. So did Les and Gayle Arant (they reside at 846 Thirteenth Street ) because I awakened
them as I drove into town to report the UFO sighting to the sheriff’s office.
At that time this ‘thing’ was heading toward the fairgrounds and disappeared in
a southeasterly direction, like toward Sacramento .
Pecha said the Arants drove into town, too, as a
report was made to the sheriff's office which apparently had received other reports
from Colusa area residents who had seen the strange glowing object.
Pecha said he was so frightened that he drove into town as fast as he could in his
pickup with the lights out. But, he said, the bluish light from this thing,
about 50 feet
off the ground, seemingly followed him, then disappeared. He further described
the events which transpired thusly:
‘Slim Davis and his wife were asleep. There was a
bluish light all over their place, and coming down these shafts of light turned
to an all-white color. This thing darted about, clear out to the foothills and
back. On each side it had two things about eight feet long which hung down and
curled around underneath it. They looked like wire bristles. The power line
poles were glowing and the two smaller UFOs each had lights.
‘All of this happened, I guess, in a matter of 15 or
20 minutes. A call was placed to Phenomena Research, the UFO reporting center
in Seattle , Washington , and the man in charge asked if
this thing I saw had three lights, or windows, and I said it did. My report was
that it seemed to have long flexible cables by which it looked like it was being
maneuvered.’
Pecha, who said he and his family didn’t get much
sleep after the early Friday morning incident, told his story to a number of Colusans
and has received numerous telephone calls. ‘I
guess some believe me and some don’t,’ he said. ‘But I know what I and
others saw. It made a UFO believer out of me, that’s for sure.’
Pechas said two officers from the sheriff’s department
came out to talk with him further about what he saw. It is also understood that
a man from the UFO reporting center in Seattle
is coming here to talk with Pecha about the incident and also to have him make
a drawing of the object.
Pacific Gas & Electric Company officials who were
contacted about the incident said there may have been some relation between it
and the fact that about the time the power outage occurred shortly before 1 A .M. Friday, the PG&E
substation at Victorville went out, causing a high voltage power line overload.
The nine-minute power outage affected thousands of Northern California homes.
It was suggested that the power overload caused static
electricity being conducted into the ground and this might have accounted for
the weird, glowing UFO witnessed and experienced by Pecha and others.
But Pecha doesn’t buy this theory. ‘It was big, it was
real, it was terrifying — shafts of light seemingly come at you, hovering over barns and houses,
darting away, coming back, moving upward, then shooting back down close to the
ground. I wasn’t a believer in UFOs before, but I certainly am now. I don’t
ever want to go through anything like this again.’ ”
The article contains Bill Pecha’s drawing of the UFO.
I also reported about this UFO case on 3 November 2013.
