“ ‘Light in Sky’ Chases Car,
Besieges Home of Farmer”
6 August 1963
(Chicago Tribune, Illinois)
Source: Chicago Tribune Archives
The whole article:
“A Wayne county family cowered in their darkened house
early today [6 August 1963] while a bright light hovered over their farm for
several hours until it disappeared shortly before dawn.
A member of the family, Ronnie Austin, 18, became
hysterical after he and his date were chased 10 miles by the bright
moving object as they returned from a drive-in movie last night. Ronnie and
Phyllis Bruce, a neighbor, rushed into the Austin household screaming.
The father, Orville Austin, stepped into the yard with
a shotgun, then ran back into the house, turned off the lights, and called for
protection against a mysterious aerial marauder.
Harry Lee, Wayne county deputy sheriff, said the light
was apparently high in the sky and was bigger and brighter than any star. He
described it as moving but not twinkling and said he kept it under observation
for several hours.
Lee said he went to the farm home, 15 miles west of
Fairfield, in answer to a call from Austin for help against the eerie object.
Ronnie said the light appeared above and behind him
shortly after he and his date had started a 10-mile drive home. Ronnie
described the light as big as an automobile and said when it swooped near him it
caused his car motor to crackle.
Ronnie said he raced his car but couldn’t outdistance
the light. It followed him home and kept its strange vigil over the farm house.
Ronnie, after he became hysterical, was given a sedative by a physician.
Three other members of the Austin family and Mis Bruce
supported the story, Lee said.
The deputy said police in Mount Vernon, 15 miles west of the
Austin home, reported seeing a strange light in the sky and that Kenneth
Talbot, police radio operator, said it appeared to have the shape of a cross.”

UFO Report:
“The 1963 UFO Chronology”
Created: 14 May 2006
Updated: 17 March 2017
(NICAP.org)
Quote from the UFO report:
“This is an 8-page chronology of UFO incidents for
1963. From August 4th into mid-month, there was a flurry of UFO sightings, mostly
in southern Illinois .
An advertising plane in the Chicago
area caused some erroneous reports about the same time. Once the reports had
been publicized, the planet Jupiter also was reported as a UFO on a few
occasions. Our Vincennes , Indiana , NICAP Subcommittee investigated
several of the key cases, submitting taped interviews and investigation
reports. Our thanks for these chronologies must go to our documentation team:
William Wise (Project Blue Book Archive), Dan Wilson (archive researcher), and
Brad Sparks (Comprehensive Catalog of Project Blue Book Unknowns). Last, but
not least, our thanks to Jean Waskiewicz who created the online NICAP DBase
(NSID) that helped make it possible to link from the cases to the reports
themselves.

UFO Case Report:
“Report # 1005
08-21~22-1963
THE SKJÆRVØY CASE”
(Water UFO (waterufo.net), Claymont , Delaware )
The whole UFO case report:
“UFO-INFORMASJON in Oslo , Norway ,
has received a report of a particularly interesting norwegian [sic] sighting
from 1963. The observation took place at a small island named Skjærvøy on the
coast of the northern part of Norway .
The following is a summary of the incident as told by the observer himself,
Helge Mikalsen of Skjærvøy:
On August 21 or 22, 1963 at 5 p.m., I took out on a
fishing trip in my boat to the sound called Kagsund near Skjærvøy. The weather
was clear and there was no wind. At about 6:30 p.m., I was going to change my
fishing location to near the ‘Skjærvøyskjæret’ (sunken rock) and was looking
west towards the island Arnøy. I suddenly saw a flame, as from a rocket
shooting out from the mountain. I thought the Navy was performing some kind of
training mission, but if so they would have to be testing something new because
I saw a 6 feet
wide orange colored [sic] flame. I then saw an object which went straight up in
the air, but the speed was not as fast as that of a rocket being launched! At a
height of about 6,000 ft .,
the flame was gone and I saw the sharp outline of a gray object. I figured it
to be some sort of balloon or parachute. The object then started to move
eastward straight against the wind, and keeping the same altitude, it passed
over a mountain top (2,350
ft .) and a small village. As it moved out over the
sound, approaching me, it came lower and I realised it was certainly no balloon
or parachute. Then the thought struck me that it was a UFO. I now observed 2
objects, one large and one small. The large object had 5 big windows on the
side towards me, which were oval on top and about 6 ft . high. The distance to
the object was 450 feet ,
and it hovered about 40 - 50
feet above the water. Suddenly, what appeared to be 2
rails came down out of the large object, and the smaller one hooked on to these
and was drawn into the larger one. The small thing was oval, about 6 by 9 feet . No smoke or flame
was observed and there was no sound.
The time was now 6:40 p.m., and I must admit I was
feeling nervous and afraid. For a short moment I had looked around for other
witnesses, but could see no other boats. The wind had now increased and the sea
was dark, but underneath the object the water was calm and shiny. In one of the
object’s windows, I saw a green light beam which was directed at me. The round
light (about 1 ft .
in diameter) was changing colour, light and dark green, and something seemed to
be moving behind the light. I tried to lift a fish into the boat, but could not
manage it. I seemed to be paralyzed. Whether this was due to the excitement or
something else, I do not know.
I judged the large UFO to be about 30 feet high, and 105-120 feet long (diameter?).
I cannot say for certain if the object was oval or circular, as it had the same
side turned towards me during the whole observation. It was flat underneath but
had a dome on top. The object had stopped right over a large, sunken german [sic] cargo ship which shipwrecked here in 1944, and which carried ore and
quicksilver. I watched something which I am not certain of, either being drawn
out of, or dumped into the sea. Several little dark things were seen between
the object and the sea surface. To me it seemed that something was coming up
out of the sea and entered in through the bottom of the object. It hovered
motionless during this time which was 10 minutes. The UFO then tilted a little
to one side and started to accelerate. Suddenly the large object’s speed
increased tremendously, and in one minute, it had disappeared in a northerly
direction out of the fjord of Kvenangen [sic] (Kvænangen). The colour of the
object was metallic or silver-grey.
On the basis of the investigations carried out by:
TRONDHEIM UFO FORENING, Trondheim , &
UFO-INFORMASJON, Oslo ,
it is considered that this person is reliable and that the story very likely is
true. Mr. Mikalsen has agreed to the story being publically known.

“Several Radar Contacts
Jan. 28, 1953
Albany and Dobbins, Georgia”
(NICAP.org)
The whole UFO case report:
“Brad Sparks:
Jan. 28, 1953; Turner AFB, Dobbins, Georgia (BBU 2365)
9:40-10:00 p.m. (EST). USAF senior pilot at Moody AFB,
Major Hal W. Lamb, apparently saw the setting planet Venus changing color and
shape (at 267°-270° azimuth 3° elevation
dropping below horizon, his estimates varying from 250° to 295°-310°
azimuth) while flying a T-33, also seen by Turner AFB tower operators (with
time errors of about 10 mins). At about 9:40-9:48 (reported as 9:50-9:58) two
GCA radar maintenance men at Turner AFB radar tracked 3 moving targets and a
stationary target (at due W 270° azimuth 26 miles ?). At 10:00
(reported as 10:10), the GCA reported 2 stationary targets at 17 and 27 (or 23
27?) miles both 300° azimuth. No visual confirmation though binoculars used.

Dan Wilson:
Jan. 28, 1953; Albany ,
Georgia
At 9:50 p.m. EST, Albany radio called Turner AFB tower and
asked the operators on duty to look west of the field and see if they observed
any strange objects. A circular object changing colors from glowing orange to
white was observed at 250 degrees azimuth 15 degrees above the horizon. The
tower operators watched the object for a period of eight minutes until it
disappeared. During this eight minute period GCA was contacted and two
maintenance men were doing work on the radar and turned the set on and they
reported that they picked up 3 or 4 objects on the scope, 3 moving and 1
stationary. These objects were at approximately 300 degrees at 27 miles . (Dan Wilson)
At 21:35 hours (9:35 p.m.) EST, a pilot flying a T-33
jet aircraft reported that he observed an unusually bright light NW of Albany,
Georgia. At first the object appeared to be circular in shape and white in
color. When the object was first sighted the T-33 was at 4000 feet and the object
appeared to be slightly above the aircraft. At the end of the observation the
aircraft was at 10,000
feet and the object appeared to be below the plane. The
last 15 seconds of observation the object changed from circular in shape to
triangular and then split in two triangles one above the other and then they
disappeared suddenly. According to the sighting report radar contact was made
with the object by Albany
Airport . (Dan Wilson)”

Quote from the Wikipedia article:
“Naval Air Station
History
Turner Field (1941-1946)
In mid-1940 the U.S. Army Air Corps approached the
city of Albany about the possibility of building
a training base near Albany .
The city raised the necessary money and purchased 4,900 acres of land which was
then leased to the Army for $51 a year. Construction of the base and airfield,
named Air Corps Advanced Flying School, Albany by the United States Army Corps
of Engineers began on 25 March 1941.[1] On 21 July 1941, the field was named
Turner Field in honor of Lt. Sullivan Turner, a Georgia native killed in a
midair collision.[2]
Once operational, Turner Field was used for
acclimatization training (for foreign trainees) and advanced flight training as
part of the 30th Flying Training Wing. Primary flight training in the
Boeing-Stearman PT-17 Kaydet was done at Darr Aero Tech also in Albany.[3]
Under the Arnold Scheme some 5,000 Royal Air Force trainees were trained at
Turner Field and Darr Aero Tech between 1941 and 1943.[4] In 1944 Turner Field
began training Free French Air Forces pilots to fly the North American B-25
Mitchell of which more than 100 were based at Turner Field.[5]
Turner Field was deactivated on 15 August 1946 and
maintained in caretaker status.[2]
Turner Air Force Base (1947-1966)
On 1 April 1947, the airfield was reactivated.[2] On
13 January 1948, it was renamed Turner Air Force Base.
On 20 November 1947 the 31st Tactical Fighter Wing
equipped with North American F-51 Mustangs moved there from Langley Field and
would remain there until 25 August 1948.[6]
In 1950 the base was transferred from Continental Air
Command (CAC) to Strategic Air Command (SAC).[7]
The 40th Air Division was based at Turner from 14
March 1951 to 1 April 1957.[8]
The 508th Fighter-Escort Wing (later renamed the 508th
Strategic Fighter Wing) was based at Turner from July 1952 until 11 May
1956.[6]:275
The 4080th Strategic Reconnaissance Wing was
established at Turner in May 1956 and based there until 1 April 1957.
The base was transferred from SAC to Tactical Air
Command (TAC) in 1957 when SAC gave up its escort mission, however, the base
would be returned to SAC on 1 January 1959 when the 822d Air Division was
established there on 1 January 1959.[7]:74–5 The 822nd Air Division would
remain at Turner until it was inactivated on 2 September 1966.[9] One of the
component units of the 822nd Air Division was the 4138th Strategic Wing which
was activated at Turner and received its first combat aircraft when the 336th
Bombardment Squadron, equipped with 15 B-52 Stratofortresses moved to Turner
from Biggs AFB, Texas. In February 1963, the 4138th Strategic Wing and 336th
Bombardment Squadron were inactivated and the 484th Bombardment Wing was
activated at Turner to assume the mission, aircraft, personnel and equipment of
the 4138th wing.[6]:270–1
In December 1965 it was announced that Turner Air
Force Base would be closed.[7]:111
Naval Air Station Albany (1967-1974)
RVAH-14 RA-5C Vigilante over NAS Albany in 1969
The base was recommissioned as Naval Air Station
Albany on 1 July 1967.[10]
With the impending closure of Naval Air Station
Sanford, Reconnaissance Attack Wing One moved to NAS Albany and it became the
main operational base for the Navy's North American RA-5C Vigilante until 1974
when operations were moved to NAS Key West, Florida.”

UFO Article (Blog):
“Massive Quantity Of Unreleased UFO
Files Held By New Zealand Government”
By Paul Dean, 14 July 2017
(UFOs – Documenting The Evidence, Melbourne , Australia )
Quote from the article:
“On the 3rd of August, 1985, researcher Timothy Good
wrote to the Air Vice Marshal Ewan Jamieson, Chief of the Air Staff, at the
Ministry of Defence Headquarters, Wellington , New Zealand , asking what the New Zealand
military’s official stance on UFOs was. In a 6th of September, 1985 reply to
Good, Wing Commander S. D. White, writing on behalf of Air Vice Marshal Ewan
Jamieson, stated:
‘New
Zealand ’s Ministry of Defence is not
specifically charged with any formal responsibility for investigating UFOs…
…and neither is any other government department. The Ministry does however take
an active interest in all such reports and within the limitations of its
resources conducts investigations as necessary.’
This official statement, and quite a few others like
it, was somewhat misleading.
In March, 2017, I accessed Archives New Zealand, which
is that country's official national archive and records repository, and entered
a series of keywords into the ‘Archway’ search engine. Using the keywords ‘unidentified
flying object,’ ‘ufo,’ ‘unidentified flying objects,’ ‘ufos,’ ‘unknown object,’
‘unknown objects,’ ‘flying saucers’ and the like, I was surprised to see
numerous hits displayed in the results. Of course, New Zealand ’s government has
already released numerous files, so any search results which included these
items were expected. What I didn’t expect was a listing of hitherto unknown
files, some of which are ‘restricted’ from public access for decades to come. I
should state that these unreleased files were not totally unknown to at least a
handful of researchers. British based researcher Isaac Koi, for example,
discussed the existence of these records some time ago on the internet forum
Above Top Secret, and Keith Basterfield mentioned some of the items in various New Zealand
focused blogposts in 2010.
The first file of note, which should have been
released in 2010, is titled ‘Intelligence – Defence – Unidentified Sightings.’
The record number for this item is ‘244/1/7’ and the date range spans from 1963
to 1976. The current controlling agency of the file is the New Zealand Defence
Force (NZDF), but the original controlling agency, presumably, will be either a
top–echelon division of the Ministry of Defence (MoD), or, one of New Zealand ’s
armed forces branches. Traditionally, New Zealand ’s defence apparatus
has, like most nations, always included an Army, Navy and Air Force. Either
way, the file metadata gives no clue as to its origin. Moreover, as noted, this
file is clearly a MoD item of some sort, and the NZDF is listed as the most
recent controlling entity, so the notion that the NZDF released all of its UFO
files in 2010 is quite incorrect. Having said that, the file is listed as ‘Open
Access,’ so someone in the NZDF has cleared it for release.”

Washington. After its closure in 1966, the airport facility became Grant County
International Airport .
Air Defense Command
Moses Lake AFB reopened as a permanent installation on
26 August 1948, being transferred from Air Material Command to the Air Defense
Command (ADC). The initial ADC base operating unit was the 2755th Air Base
Squadron. Under ADC, the base came under the Western Air Defense Force,
headquartered at Hamilton AFB, California .
Interceptors
The primary mission of Larson-based ADC aircraft was
to protect the secret Hanford Atomic Works and the Grand Coulee Dam.
The first ADC flying unit to arrive was the 325th
Fighter-Interceptor Group, which arrived on 26 November 1948. The mission of
the 325th FIG was to conduct ADC's All
Weather Combat
Crew Training
School . Its operational component, the 317th
Fighter Interceptor Squadron, initially flew Northrop P-61 Black Widows, almost
immediately transitioning to the North American F-82 Twin Mustang. A second
squadron, the 319th Fighter Interceptor Squadron arrived on 2 September 1949,
being reassigned from McChord AFB. The 319th also flew the F-82 Twin
Mustang.[8][9] The 325th FIG remained at Moses Lake until being reassigned to
McChord AFB on 23 April 1950, along with the 317th FIS. The 319th remained
