“MELBOURNE: Police are baffled by two unidentified flying objects sighted at Melton on the western outskirts of Melbourne early yesterday morning.

Chief Inspector Ray Hickman said yesterday that the UFOs had been followed for about six hours by police from West Melton to the local shopping centre as they flew over the area.

The objects had been spotted by Constable Peter Ferguson and Constable Ray Allans while on car patrol about 1.30 am. They said later that one of the objects could have been a gyrocopter.

‘The other aircraft, which I also saw, was a jet-type craft about 13 by five metres,’ Inspector Hickman said. ‘It was a grey colour with white lights at the back and front and red lights on the top and underneath.’

It had been moving very quietly at about 130 to 145km/h.

Above the shopping centre both crafts’ lights had gone off and the UFOs had disappeared.

A spokesman for the Department of Aviation, Mr Ken Williams, said the aircraft control tower at Tullamarine had received an occasional signal but not enough to identify the aircraft.”

What could be more interesting and important than an incident involving UFOs and our strategic defenses, especially where there appears to have been a direct relationship between the incident and the failure of vital missile targeting systems, ten missiles at one site and ten at another, 35 miles apart! ‘Some signal had been sent to the missiles which caused them to go off alert status.’ What most people do not understand is, this was not just an unfounded rumor. The incident has been confirmed. Although it is normal for authorities to ‘explain away’ almost all UFO incidents, this one is not that easy. This is the story of extraordinary events that happened in 1967 to Strategic Air Command Missile Combat Officers; Missileers assigned to operate the Minuteman Intercontinental Ballistic Missile , an essential part of America's Cold War strategic nuclear deterrent. Our thanks to Joel Carpenter for locating the image of what he suspects is the LCC capsule that was apparently targeted by the UFO.  And, most importantly, our thanks to Jim Klotz and Robert Salas for the official reporting of this incident to the world. And now, their book, ‘Faded Giant,’ tells the full story. (See link below).

In the 1967 Malmstrom incident 10 Minutemans DID get knocked out, but the investigation was conducted not by NSA but by the missile contractor Boeing, which issued a SECRET classified ‘Report of Engineering Investigation of Echo Flight Incident, Malmstrom, Mont - 16 Mar 1967.’ The trick was that the UFO ‘rumors’ were denied so that the missile disabling could be investigated and reported as if unrelated to the UFO’s (which WERE sighted, contrary to the flimsy denials).  No satisfactory explanation for the missile disabling was found. (See below) Presumably whenever these kinds of national security UFO incidents occurred that affected military equipment there were investigations by contractors who built or maintained the equipment, and the UFO aspects were compartmented off.  At a higher level these reports could be read by someone cleared to know about the UFO details, and they could ignore the perfunctory denials of UFO activity written into the contractor studies.”

In their UFO book (Page 13), Klotz and Salas report that the Oscar Flight (O-Flight) ICBM-related UFO incident occurred in the early hours of the morning of 24 March 1967.

“RED, WHITE, AND BLUE. CITY MINISTER’S STORY.

The Rev. B. Cozens, chaplain to the Port Melbourne Seamen’s Mission, came last night into ‘The Argus’ office, and made the following statement about beautiful lights floating on Saturday night (7 August 1909) over the Dandenong Ranges.

‘I had been staying for the week-end at Kangaroo Ground, near Eltham, on a farm in which I have an interest,’ he said. ‘The house is situated on a ridge and commands a splendid view of Dandenong and, on the other side, of the Dividing Range. At 10 o’clock on Saturday night my wife and I saw two beautiful revolving lights high up in the air above the Dandenong Range. These lights whirled like the propellers of ships, slowed down, dipped, and rose again, as if they were beating up in a zig-zag course against the wind. They were about six miles apart, and about half a mile in the air over the top of the range. They changed from white to red, and then to blue, as if they were revolving beacons with three-coloured slides.

‘So as to have some confirmation of what I thought even then might have been an optical illusion, I called out a neighbour, Mr. J. Swain and his two sons. Mr Swain is a monumental mason, and carries on business at the corner of Latrobe and Exhibition streets. We watched the lights from 10 till 12. One of them had almost moved out of sight over the back of the Divide by that time, and the other was working towards the same place. I rose at 2 o’clock and saw the second nearly over the range, and five more very dim in the distance, driving up in the track of the ones we had seen. They were very faint indeed, and very far away. They seemed to be coming from the lakes along the coast. The second followed the track of the first. The whole impression of their movements was that of machinery (my emphasis). After 2 o’clock I saw no more of them. None of the neighbours except Mr. Swain and his sons seem to have seen them. They were probably indoors, as the night was cold.’ ”

“Further sightings of unidentified flying objects were reported in Brazil yesterday (24 May 1986) as an investigation continued into the scrambling of fighters on Monday (19 May 1986) to intercept objects that appeared on radar screens. 

Brazilian television showed film of a glowing, round object in the sky which was said to have been taken on Thursday night by a freelance cameraman near Maringa, in the southern State of Parana.

On Wednesday afternoon an airforce base in Fortaleza, capital of the north-eastern State of Ceara, received numerous calls from residents about a dark, cigar-shaped object seen in the skies, the Jornal do Brasil said.

The Air Force Ministry has summoned pilots of three F-5s and two Mirage jets ordered into the air on Monday from bases in southern Brazil to report on the sightings, which lasted for several hours and disrupted civil air traffic.

The head of the State oil company Petrobras, Colonel Ozires Silva, said in Rio de Janeiro on Thursday that he had been piloting a light aircraft on Monday night when he was advised by Brasilia flight controllers of UFOs.

Colonel Ozires, who was preparing to land at Sao Jose dos Campos, just outside Sao Paulo, turned his aircraft in the direction indicated by the controllers and saw several bright lights. 

He said that in normal conditions they were the sort of lights that could often be seen by pilots, but these lights, which were orange and red and moved at a great speed, had also appeared on radar.

Colonel Ozires said he had felt reluctant to mention the incident.

‘People who speak about flying saucers are normally not taken very seriously,’ he said.

‘If it were not for the appearance on the radar, which is a concrete fact, I would not have had the courage to mention the subject.’ ”

Bigelow has poured more money into UFO/animal mutilation research (at the National Institute for Discovery Science (NIDS)) than any other person. For this he deserves credit.
