April 29, 1982; near Plattsburgh Air Force Base, NY

11:40 PM. A woman named Mary E. Boule saw a silent dome-shaped object near Plattsburgh Air Force Base. The object had a turquoise blue light on top and portholes. It flew low at 400-500 feet altitude, and definitely entered the air base’s restricted air space. (Source: CUFOS files, letter from witness).

Nov. 27, 1982; Palatine, IL

5:00 AM. In the suburbs of Cook County, there was a vehicle encounter between three police officers and a domed disc-shaped object 30 feet in diameter, which emitted a light beam toward the ground. It began when a luminous object with brilliant illumination brightly illuminated a police patrol car, then changed direction when pursued. The white domed disc was later seen to the east, with a light beam extended toward the ground, as it descended behind the tree line. The entire episode lasted about three minutes. Dec. 31, 1982; Kent Cliffs, NY

11:54 PM. In the lower Hudson River Valley a police officer and his wife spotted a delta-shaped UFO making a faint, low frequency hum. The colored lights on the object switched off and three bright white lights lit up the ground. He was able to shoot some movie film of the UFO, but the images are of low quality. (Source: J. UFO Case Directory (Close Encounters): “Portage County UFO Chase April 17, 1966 Ravenna, Ohio”

“Brad Sparks:

April 17, 1966; Portage County, Ohio, bet. Atwater and Randolph, Ohio, to Pittsburgh, Penna.

5-6:10 a.m. (EST). E of Akron Deputy Sheriff Dale F. Spaur and associate Wilbur Neff saw a 30-45 ft metallic object approach over the treetops from the woods, bathing the witnesses and the whole area in light while making a transformer-like hum, then headed E and they gave chase in the patrol car at speeds up to 105 mph for 85 miles. Officer Wayne Huston about 35 miles to the ESE saw the object he described as ice cream cone-shaped, point downwards, approach from the W and pass overhead at about 800-900 ft height with paur and Neff in pursuit to the SE and he joined them near Unity, Ohio, with the object about 1/2 to 3/4 mile ahead of them, reaching the Penna. state line at 5:35. They lost sight of object at Brady Run Park regained it in Bridgeport, Penna. At about this time officers Lonnie Johnson and Ray Esterly in Salem, Ohio, saw 3 jet fighters [two F-102’s] attempting to intercept a bright object at about 10,000-20,000 ft about 25° elevation to the E for about 2 mins. In Conway, Penna., at 6 a.m. they met with officer Frank Panzarella who had been watching the object for 10 mins to the E or SE which he described as 25-35 ft half-football-shaped object at about 1,000 ft height (or 1,500-2,000 ft according to the others), when it stopped in the NE towards Harmony, Penna, then rose. They watched as the object climbed to about 3,500 ft to the left of and level with the quarter moon in the ESE (which was at about azimuth 116° elevation 14° and 11% illuminated at 6:00 a.m.) and Venus (at 122° azimuth 22° elevation) and it passed near a 707 airliner taking off from Pittsburgh Airport and disappeared shooting up vertically at about 6:10. If this incident seems familiar to you, just maybe you saw the motion picture, ‘Close Encounters of the Third Kind’. Investigated by NICAP’s William Weitzel, this report, also known as the Spauer/Neff Case, was the basis for the UFO ‘chase’ in this film. This case involves police witnesses, confrontation, light beam, brilliant illumination, light engulfment, sound, cat and mouse chase, with rapid upward departure. Special thanks go out to Mark Rodeghier of CUFOS for providing the documentation and to Loy Pressley for converting them into text so I could make the web pages.

Ravenna, Ohio calls for reevaluation not only on the scientific grounds involved, but also to avoid unfairly subjecting to local public ridicule the several officers who have testified.  (Compare Bertrand & Hunt in the Exeter case) The available evidence (especially Wm. Weitzel’s extensive report for NICAP) seems to me to make the astronomical explanation, that now stands as the official Air Force evaluation, quite unreasonable.

23.   04.17.1966.  NICAP’s William Weitzel asked Dale Spaur, etc., following their meeting with Major Hector Quintanill [sic], Jr. for their reaction as to Quintanilla’s explanation of their case.”

“In part two of this legendary saga, I'm going to try to sketch out how CUFOS and I got involved with the case. That involvement ultimately led to the publication of our findings in the article in the International UFO Reporter above. Those findings encompassed only a small, albeit vital, portion of the case, as other investigators allegedly were getting the mass of the on-the-ground fieldwork data. As said in part one, it turns out that those ‘other’ researchers were either NOT getting the fieldwork data or that data was never utilized and promulgated to the rest of us. We didn't know that at the time, of course.

CUFOS got word of this explosion of UFOs over Western Michigan at about the same time that everyone else did, but CUFOS was by that time in its history no longer an organization which did onsite fieldwork except in very special circumstances. Still, CUFOS Director, Mark Rodeghier, decided that this one sounded like we should at least we should dip our toe in the water. He knew that I was not a field researcher, but that I had a friend, an old NICAP member, who used to do that. So that's who he called. My friend began looking into this.

It was instantly obvious that a chaotic circus had immediately commenced. Witnesses, other than the Graves family, were being assaulted in paparazzi fashion and being turned off everywhere. The 911 operator told my friend that he knew of a few witnesses who had seen quite a bit, but who had told him that under no circumstances was he to let out their names. One guy was an ex-USAF colonel who lived south along the coast and who would have been a superior addition to the story. But no way.

The NOAA station manager had told everyone flat that there would be no interviewing any station personnel especially the night operator who took the 911 call. They wanted none of the grief. My friend made contact not only with them [briefly] but went on to talk with NOAA HQ in Washington DC. He made a good impression. Ultimately they called him back and said that he could have the only interview with the staff, BUT he would have to bring that WMU science professor with him when he came [he'd played my ‘PhD card’ to them over the phone]. So I was stuck with a field investigation if we wanted access.”
