Sometime before 3:55 a.m. MST. NMCC Memo: The following information was received from the Air Force Operations center at 0555 EST: ‘Two UFOs are reported near the flight line at Cannon AFB, New Mexico. Security Police observing them reported the UFOs to be 25 yards in diameter, gold or silver in color with blue light on top, hole in the middle and red light on the bottom. Air Force is checking with radar. Additionally, checking weather inversion data.’ (Actual FOIA document) Among other UFO researchers who arrived in Clovis were several members of the ‘UFO Study Group,’ which has about 40 members, mainly employees of the Los Alamos Scientific Laboratories ­ the facility where the atomic bomb was developed in World War II. Police said scores of sightings were reported between 6 p.m. and 10:30 p.m. Friday an hour before the Los Alamos observers arrived. (Las Cruces SUN NEWS, Sunday Morning, Jan. 25, 1976)

Reports of the sightings have increased steadily since the first night. Most of the reports have been of faraway objects, but Town Marshal Willie Ronquillo of Texico said he followed a silent object about 300 yards over his car. Ronquillo said the object, which had green, yellow and blue lights, sped away at a high speed to the north. Lenore Hildebrand of the UFO center in Wisconsin said Jim Epps of Valley Center, Calif., would arrive in Clovis. She said an Air Force officer from Clovis called the center Friday night and told them he ‘had a very close sighting and was able to witness a type of vehicle that did maneuver and that was unlike any type aircraft he has ever seen.’ (Las Cruces SUN News, same as above)”

It is under the jurisdiction of Air Force Special Operations Command (AFSOC). The population of the Cannon AFB CDP was 2,245 as of the 2010 census. The host unit at Cannon is the 27th Special Operations Wing (27 SOW), which activated on 1 October 2007, and is assigned to the Air Force Special Operations Command (AFSOC). The AC-130W is assigned to the 73rd Special Operations Squadron, with all twelve becoming operational in 2010.[5]”

“Recently, in Part 1, Part 2, Part 3 and Part 4 of this series, I have highlighted the use of the US military’s OPREP–3 system to report apparent UFO events which have occurred over military installations, and, in air defence environments. OPREP–3 is short for ‘Operational Reporting – 3,’ one of a number of distinct categories of operational report channels. A December, 1993 dated Instruction, titled ‘Joint Reporting Structure Event and Incident Reports,’ and promulgated by the Chairman, Joint Chiefs of Staff (CJCS), establishes that:

‘The OPREP–3 reporting system… …is used by military units at any level of command to report significant events and incidents to the highest levels of command.’

As I have previously outlined in this series, both Loring AFB and Wurtsmith AFB were, in late 1975, the scene of unusual and unexpected ‘over flights’ or ‘intrusions’ by objects variously described as ‘unidentified helicopters,’ ‘unknown helicopters,’ ‘unidentified flying objects,’ ‘unknown objects’ and ‘UFOs.’ Both these bases were under USAF Stratigic Air Command (SAC) control, and both held nuclear weapons. These events were reported, via the OPREP–3 channel, to the National Military Command Center (NMCC), the Strategic Air Command Headquarters (SAC HQ), the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff (CJCS), the USAF’s Major Command Coordination Center (MCCC), the North American Aerospace Defence Command (NORAD), the USAF’s Air Force Intelligence Service, (AFIS), the 8th Air Force’s Headquarters (8AF HQ), and a number of other components within the US military and intelligence community. Also, other SAC bases, including Malmstrom AFB and Minot AFB, plus Canada’s Falconbridge Air Station, were likewise intruded on by unidentified aircraft, or, at minimum, some sort of unusual phenomena. As the months went on into 1976, other USAF installations, including Fort Richie AFB, Cannon AFB and Eglin AFB were the scene of similar aerial disturbances. Judging by tantalising references in officially released records, there may have been similar events at other US military installations too.

In this Part 5, I will be highlighting never–before–seen US military documents which demonstrate, unmistakably, a considerable level of investigation done into the 1975 ‘over flights.’ I will not attempt to assemble the entire investigative history that was performed by interested commands and agencies, as such an undertaking would probably require a book–length treatment, and, many of the documents involved remain classified, or, will have been presumably destroyed. Rather, I will present, and briefly discuss, a mixture of records which simply provide a snapshot of government UFO investigation, evaluation, and very high level concern.”

Captain Edward J. Ruppelt, in his book (‘The Report on Unidentified Flying Objects’) wrote that it was just a matter of days after the top secret Estimate of the Situation was signed, sealed, and sent on its way, that the third big sighting of 1948 took place. This was the famous Fargo, ND case, one of the cases  ‘that ‘proved’ to ATIC’s intelligence analysts that UFOs were real.’ Small lights in the sky are easy prey for the skeptics, until one reads the details of the reports. This is not only unexplained, it’s a good report supporting the existence of a type of object that has become known as a probes. Documents found recently (see USAF SIGN3-2 below) state the object detected the approaching F-51 and took evasive action.

Brad Sparks:

Oct. 1, 1948; Fargo, North Dakota (BBU)

9:00-9:27 p.m. (MST). Air National Guard fighter pilot Lt. George F. Gorman plus 4 others including 2 CAA tower controllers saw a small 6-8-inch round white ball of light with a flat, no-depth disc-like appearance, blinking off and on at slow speed. First spotted by pilot Dr. A. D. Cannon and passenger Einar Neilson aboard Piper Cub aircraft at 1600 ft AGL, N of Hector Field moving fast to the W above them at about 250-­270 mph, spotted by Gorman shortly after. Gorman radioed tower and began pursuit at 9:07 p.m. Cannon and Neilson landed, went up into airport tower and with binoculars watched Lt. Gorman attempt to chase the light in his F-51 fighter, closest approach less than 500 ft distance on his first pass at about 5,000 ft. Gorman climbed to 14,000 ft but stalled out unable to intercept light at about 16,000 ft. Light made evasive and aggressive maneuvers, such as seeming to try to ram the F-51, that outperformed the F-51 at a top speed 600+ mph. Light dropped to 11,000 ft, Gorman attempted to dive on it, light pulled up, rose vertically until it disappeared. 27 mins. (Sparks)
