Robert Powell & SCU:

November 14th of 2004; Off coast of Southern California

The U.S. Navy’s Carrier Strike Group Eleven (CSG 11), including the USS Nimitz nuclear aircraft carrier and the USS Princeton missile cruiser, were conducting a training exercise off the coast of southern California when the Navy’s radar systems detected as many as 20 anomalous aerial vehicles (AAV). These AAVs were deemed a safety hazard to an upcoming air exercise and the Captain of the USS Princeton ordered an interception with two F/A-18F Navy jets. This paper examines the publicly available subset of these data: Eyewitness information from the pilots and radar operators; Freedom of Information Act releases of four navy documents; and a Defense Intelligence Agency released video taken by an F/A-18F jet using an AN/ASQ-228 Advanced Targeting Forward Looking Infrared (ATFLIR). Analytical calculations based on radar notes, testimony from the pilots, and the ATFLIR video are used to derive the velocity, acceleration and estimated power demonstrated by the AAV maneuvers. Calculated AAV accelerations ranged from 40 g-forces to hundreds of g- forces and estimated power based on a weight of one ton ranged from one to nine gigawatts. None of the navy witnesses reported having ever previously seen military or civilian vehicles with these maneuvering abilities. Manned aircraft such as the F-22 and F-35 are limited to nine g-forces and the F-35 has maintained structural integrity up to 13.5 g-forces. Our results suggest that given the available information the AAV’s capabilities are beyond any known technology. The public release of all navy records associated with this incident to enable a full, scientific and open investigation is strongly recommended.

Fran Ridge:

Two F-18 Hornets alerted to UFO in Pacific that had been dogging the USS Princeton for two weeks. F-18’s tried to intercept and object dove from 80,000 feet to 20,000' and hovered over ocean and either dropped out of radar range or shot straight back up. The radio operator on the USS Princeton instructed Commander Fravor and Commander Slaight to investigate. The two fighter planes headed toward the objects. The Princeton alerted them as they closed in, but when they arrived at ‘merge plot’ with the object, so close that the Princeton could not tell which were the objects and which were the fighter jets, neither Commander Fravor nor Commander Slaight could see anything at first. There was nothing on their radars. Then, Commander Fravor looked down to the sea. It was calm that day, but the waves were breaking over something that was just below the surface. Whatever it was, it was big enough to cause the sea to churn. Hovering 50 feet above the churn was an aircraft of some kind, whitish, that was around 40 feet long and oval in shape. The craft was jumping around erratically, staying over the wave disturbance but not moving in any specific direction, Commander Fravor said. The disturbance looked like frothy waves and foam, as if the water were boiling. Commander Fravor began a circular descent to get a closer look, but as he got nearer the object began ascending toward him. It was almost as if it were coming to meet him halfway, he said. Commander Fravor abandoned his slow circular descent and headed straight for the object. But then the object peeled away. ‘It accelerated like nothing I’ve ever seen,’ he said in the interview. He was, he said, ‘pretty weirded out.’ The two fighter jets then conferred with the operations officer on the Princeton and were told to head to a rendezvous point 60 miles away, called the cap point, in aviation parlance. They were en route and closing in when the Princeton radioed again. Radar had again picked up the strange aircraft. ‘Sir, you won’t believe it,’ the radio operator said, ‘but that thing is at your cap point.’ ‘We were at least 40 miles away, and in less than a minute this thing was already at our cap point,’ Commander Fravor, who has since retired from the Navy, said in the interview. By the time the two fighter jets arrived at the rendezvous point, the object had disappeared. The fighter jets returned to the Nimitz.  (CBS News, New York Times, Washington Post)”

UFO Radio Interview:
“Paul Dean, Possible UFO Detection
Documents through FOIA and More!”

Streamed live: 6 (not 7) September 2020
(Podcast UFO, Sebago, Maine)

Source: Martin Willis Live Shows (YouTube channel)

Video text:
“Guest Paul Dean discusses what he has uncovered through Freedom of information documents, un-mined sources of government entities that have detected, tracked and made conclusions on anomalous aerial objects. There have been extremely unusual aerospace events; plus, the results of FOIA work into historical records of the USAF Space Command; NORAD; the FAA, and more.

BIO: Paul Dean is an Australian researcher who focuses on government and military involvement and response to the so-called UFO phenomena. Working alone for 20 years, Paul became an expert in official documentation related to the UFO issue. Seven years ago he began tackling the problem directly, and became instrumental in seeing that the Australian government release hitherto classified files from the Royal Australian Air Force, Air Services Australia, the Australian Transport Safety Bureau, and the National Archives of Australia. He works extensively with Australian based researcher Keith Basterfield on UFO case analysis and the preservation of UFO-related records. Further, Paul started working on the US scene with ‘old school’ researchers like Barry Greenwood, Brad Sparks and Jan Aldrich.

Paul and his team use the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) to obtain records, and he is hot on the trail of 100s of never-before-seen classified military files. Recent discoveries include UFO sighting reports created during the Vietnam War, and administrative records related to a pair of highly classified ‘UFO tracking’ programs which were ran by the US Army and US Air Force during America's involvement in that conflict. Other fresh finds include Federal Bureau of Investigation records related to the interrogation of UFO researchers in the 1970's, and a current Federal Aviation Administration system for logging military intercepts of unknown objects in America’s airspace. Paul has also begun requesting UFO records from the USAF’s Air Force Space Command, which will include files from the 21st Space Wing and the vital Joint Functional Component Centre for Space at Vandenburg Air Force Base. Paul believes there are likely hundreds of thousands of UFO records still held by elements of the US government, and works tirelessly to source their location and availability status. All-in-all, Paul has acquired a total of 240,000 pages of UFO-related government and military records from around the world, and tens of millions of pages of non-government UFO records, including books, newsletters, monographs, newspaper articles, case studies, letters, and magazine articles.”

“Sphere Falls Then Accelerates
February 2, 1955
Miramar NAS, California”

(NICAP.org)

The whole UFO case report:
Fran Ridge:
Feb. 2, 1955; Miramar NAS, Calif. (BBU 3416)
11:50 a.m. USN Cdr. J. L. Ingersoll was driving his vehicle and was observing two Navy FJ3 aircraft in a landing pattern. The trailing FJ3 appeared to have only one rear wheel extended. Sensing an emergency he continued to watch and was able to see that all landing gear were actually down, but he also noticed an object somewhat below and aft that caught his attention. His first thought was that it was a canopy that had been ejected. The [object] was falling, and its motion seemed erratic, however it descended at a steady rate. He described it as an as off-white in color but with a highly polished surface that was definitely reflecting sunlight. His best guess was that this object was at 10-20,000 feet at first. The object came to a complete stop for about 5 to 10 seconds after dropping 3-5000 feet, then suddenly changed from white to a reddish brown and instantly accelerated at tremendous speed, estimated at 1,000-1,500  mph on a heading of 170 degrees. Object left a short brown vapor trail. The witness believes the object was not less than 25-35 feet in diameter and could have been as [large] as 100'. [Brad Sparks: The total duration is found from the estimated descent rate, thus a minimum of about 15 to 27 seconds including the 5-10 secs hovering]. (Berliner)”

UFO Article (Blog) (Redux):
“The Air Force Investigates The Flying Disks”

By Dr. Michael D. Swords, 1 September 2009
(The Big Study)

Michael D. Swords informs about the first inquiries (in 1947) the U.S. Air Force made into UFOs.

Quote from the article:
“In late June of 1947, the flying disks had begun to appear all over the United States. This was the Air Force’s area of concern, and, after convincing themselves that this was not citizen craziness, they got on the job. The document on the upper right is an example of how quickly this happened and at what level of authority. It’s a note from General Nathan Twining [Commander of Wright-Patterson AFB, and the AF’s high technology research group] to Brigadier General Samuel Brentnall who was chief of the Engineering Technology division there. Twining and Brentnall have been discussing Flying Disk reports [there is a newspaper story on them clipped to this note] already by the beginning of July. So, the AF’s technology wizards are quite interested in what this mystery device is, which has now been reported by many of their own flyers.-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The major information point for flying disk reports was in the Pentagon at the Air Force’s Intelligence Division. There they had a Collections branch commanded by Colonel Robert Taylor III. His right-hand man was Lt. Colonel George Garrett. Garrett got the job of collecting and correlating all the flying disk information. He had an FBI contact named S.L. Reynolds. The reason for the contact was that the intelligence community initially suspected that some of these reports were made by Soviet sympathizers in order to scare the public. They quickly found out otherwise [Soviet sympathizers weren't flying at 30,000 feet in metal disks to scare people in New Mexico], and Garrett and Reynolds settled down to try to figure out what WAS going on.”

Swords also presents U.S. government (U.S. Air Force and Federal Bureau of Investigation) documents that pertain to the UFO investigations.

I first reported about this article on 22 August 2013.

U.S. Government UFO News Release Article:
“IMMEDIATE RELEASE:
Establishment of Unidentified
Aerial Phenomena Task Force”

14 August 2020
(U.S. Department of Defense, Washington, D.C.)

The whole article:
“On Aug. 4, 2020, Deputy Secretary of Defense David L. Norquist approved the establishment of an Unidentified Aerial Phenomena (UAP) Task Force (UAPTF). The Department of the Navy, under the cognizance of the Office of the Under Secretary of Defense for Intelligence and Security, will lead the UAPTF.

The Department of Defense established the UAPTF to improve its understanding of, and gain insight into, the nature and origins of UAPs. The mission of the task force is to detect, analyze and catalog UAPs that could potentially pose a threat to U.S. national security.

As DOD has stated previously, the safety of our personnel and the security of our operations are of paramount concern. The Department of Defense and the military departments take any incursions by unauthorized aircraft into our training ranges or designated airspace very seriously and examine each report. This includes examinations of incursions that are initially reported as UAP when the observer cannot immediately identify what he or she is observing.”

“Radar/Visual With Two Radars
Feb. 4, 1954
Carswell AFB, Fort Worth, Texas”

(NICAP.org)

The whole UFO case report:
Brad Sparks:
Feb. 4, 1954; Carswell AFB, Ft. Worth, Texas (BBU)
11 p.m. (Shough)

Dan Wilson:
February 4, 1954; Carswell AFB, Ft. Worth, Texas
At 11:00 p.m. local time, an object was detected by the Carswell AFB Ground Control Approach (GCA) radar, an AN/CPN-4 radar, at a distance of 13 to 15 miles to the SW and was heading directly toward the base. Carswell Weather reported in and said they had the object sighted on radar at approx. same time and location. The object remained on a straight course and the GCA operator notified the Control Tower. Control Tower personnel sighted the object as it moved directly over the Control Tower at an estimated speed of 240 - 250 mph. The object was observed for approximately 6 minutes with standard binoculars during entire observation. The object was at an altitude of approximately 4,000 feet confirmed by GCA, according to the Control Tower operator.  The object was described as larger than a B-36, having a long fuselage, elliptical wings and stabilizer, gray in color, and no visible means of propulsion or exhaust. Nor did the object leave any trail and no sound was heard. The object passed out of sight to the NW. At 11:29 p.m., two targets were picked up on the Carswell GCA radar at 17 miles SW of Carswell. The targets were flying formation at an estimated 5,000 feet altitude at a speed of 200 mph. These two targets merged into one target and when 12 miles from Carswell they separated again and assumed a southerly heading. At approximately 14 miles from the base the target to the rear suddenly reversed its course, flew for two miles, then reversed course again and gradually overtook the lead target. Both targets departed [the] area flying in formation to the SSE. The INVESTIGATION OF UNIDENTIFIED FLYING OBJECTS report states that the reversal of course was for about two miles or 3.3 seconds. (Dan Wilson)”

Wikipedia article: “Carswell Air Force Base”:

Quote from the Wikipedia article:
Carswell Air Force Base is a former United States Air Force (USAF) base, located northwest of Fort Worth, Texas. For most of its operational lifetime, the bases mission was to train and support heavy strategic bombing groups and wings.

Carswell was a major Strategic Air Command (SAC) base during the Cold War. It was the headquarters of several SAC intercontinental bombardment wings, equipped with the latest heavy bombers from B-29 Superfortresses; B-36 Peacemakers and B-52 Stratofortresses. The west side of the airfield was home to Air Force Plant 4, a 602-acre (2.44 km2) industrial complex occupied over the decades by Convair, General Dynamics, and now by Lockheed Martin. The bulk of the Air Force Convair B-36, B-58 Hustler, F-111 Aardvark, EF-111 Raven and F-16 Fighting Falcon fleets were built there.

With the end of the Cold War, and the subsequent downsizing of the American military, the 1991 Base Realignment and Closure (BRAC) Commission recommended that Carswell AFB be closed by 1994. Today, the facility is known as Naval Air Station Fort Worth Joint Reserve Base. It retains an Air Force Reserve presence as well as a Navy Reserve, Marine Corps Reserve and Air National Guard flying units where were formerly located at Naval Air Station Dallas.”

UFO Article:
“The Cosford Incident”

By Nick Pope
(TheRendleshamForestIncident.com)

Quote from the article:
“On 30 and 31 March 1993 there was a series of UFO sightings in the UK involving over a hundred witnesses. Many of these were police officers and military personnel. The UFO also flew directly over two RAF bases [RAF Cosford and RAF Shawbury]. What follows is the extraordinary story of what has been dubbed The British UFO Mystery.

Conclusion

Given the MOD’s ‘no defence significance’ conclusion on UFOs, it seems fitting to conclude with quotes from MOD documents which contradict the usual stance. In a briefing that I prepared for my Head of Division on 16 April 1993 I wrote:

‘It seems that an unidentified object of unknown origin was operating in the UK Air Defence Region without being detected on radar; this would appear to be of considerable defence significance, and I recommend that we investigate further, within MOD or with the US authorities.’

My Head of Division was normally sceptical about the UFO phenomenon, but on this occasion he agreed with my conclusion. His 22 April 1993 brief to the Assistant Chief of the Air Staff (one of the UK’s most senior RAF officers) stated:

‘In summary, there would seem to be some evidence on this occasion that an unidentified object (or objects) of unknown origin was operating over the UK.’

This is about as close the MOD will ever get to saying that there’s more to UFOs than misidentifications or hoaxes.”

I first reported about this article on 25 June 2010.
