The whole article:
“All agencies of the nation’s military establishment were placed on special readiness yesterday because of a ‘pattern of unknowns [UFOs] which appeared potentially dangerous,’ the Air Defense command said today.

In a statement issued through the Eastern Defense Command headquarters at Stewart Field, the Air Defense Command said: ‘Our detection system developed a pattern of unknowns in both the Northeast and Northwest which apepared [sic] [appeared] potentially dangerous. We alerted all agencies of the national military establishment until the unknowns were identified, after which the period of special readiness was called off.

‘It would be an error to say that such an alert is not unusual. However, it is the function that the Air Defense Command was organized to perform.

The Air Defense Command declined to elaborate upon its statement or the situation which caused the ‘period’ of special readiness.’ ”

Wikipedia article: “Aerospace Defense Command”:

Quote from the Wikipedia article:
“Aerospace Defense Command was a major command of the United States Air Forces, responsible for continental air defence. It was activated in 1968 and disbanded in 1980. Its predecessor, Air Defense Command, was established in 1946, briefly inactivated in 1950, reactivated in 1951, and then redesignated Aerospace rather than Air in 1968. Its mission was to provide air defense of the Continental United States (CONUS). It directly controlled all active measures, and was tasked to coordinate all passive means of air defense.”
