The UFO incident occurred over North East Alaska on 17 November 1986, at 5:19 p.m. (18 November, at 2:19 UTC), according to the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA).

The  initial UFO sighting took place 90 nautical miles north east of Fort Yukon, according to U.S. UFO researcher Dr. Bruce Maccabee.

The Japan Airlines cargo jet was piloted by Captain Kenju (or Kenji, according to some sources) Terauchi.

The FAA also collected news articles that reported on the case.
