UFO News Article:
“Flying Disk Reported at Sioux City”

31 March 1950 (The Telegraph-Herald, Dubuque, Iowa)

A UFO, described as looking like a straightedge ruler and as a disk, was sighted over Sioux City, Iowa on 30 March 1950:

Quote from the article:
“The object was seen by at least eight persons, including several members of the Iowa air national guard unit here.

Dr. Fred M. Bohmker, 30, a veterinarian, said he saw the object at about 9:30 a.m. while pursuing his hobby of watching wild geese in migration.

‘One particular flock of geese went overhead, but an object remained above their path of flight,’ he said. He declared he watched it through binoculars and ‘all I could think of was a straight-edge ruler.’

Two other persons with Dr. Bohmker also saw the object. They were Sam Baker, about 28, and Harlan Hyde, about 48.

Cpl. Richard Kjos, 21, a member of an air national guard unit, said he saw the object a little later. ‘It followed a T-6 (training plane) right into the traffic pattern. It was white – awfully white – and was blurred around the edges, mist-like.’

Kjos said the object appeared to be ‘quite high’ over a highway near the air base.

Both the corporal and other members of the national guard unit who saw the object said it appeared to be controlled because it ‘made a smooth even flight.’

They said it travelled slowly for a time and then streaked away at high speed. Some of the guardsmen described the object as ‘like a dime turned on edge.’ ”
