The Navy is inclined to be skeptical about strange subs reported popping up off the Florida Gulf and Atlantic Coasts, and off California. The information thus far is too vague to be evaluated say topdeck Navy officers.
But the Navy is investigating. So is the Air Force. And FBI officials here said they are keeping in touch with the situation on general principles.
Four fishermen and crews of two passenger airplanes reported seeing a sub off Venice, Fla., on the Gulf Coast. One plane crew reported making a pass at it and seeing it dive.”
