UFO Report:
“The 1971 UFO Chronology”

Released: 18 April 2013
(NICAP.org)

Quote from the UFO report:
“This is an 8-page chronology of UFO incidents and events for 1971. Our thanks for these chronologies must go to our documentation team: Richard Hall (the original 1970 chronology from UFOE II), William Wise (Project Blue Book Archive), Dan Wilson (archive researcher), Brad Sparks (Comprehensive Catalog of Project Blue Book Unknowns), and Jean Waskiewicz (online NICAP DBase (NSID)).

An apparent lull in sighting reports may be the result of the closing of Project Blue Book and the media coverage of this for several years, and may not reflect the actual situation. But this was the calm before the storm of 1973. We wish to caution readers/researchers as to the quality of some of the submittals for this chrono. After consulting the usual sources (NICAP files in particular) we ran a search on the internet to see if we had missed anything important, and in the process located some cases which we have listed as ‘unevaluated’ cases or sources. These are flagged as ‘unevaluated’ and, if anyone has any information that would upgrade these incidents to officially investigated or documented in some way, please let us know.

Francis Ridge
NICAP Site Coordinator

July 18-24, 1971; Quebec, Canada Blackouts
A succession of power failures occurred, coinciding with many observations of UFOs in the same localities, some of them even occurring over and near electric power stations of Hydro-Quebec....The city of Montreal and its surroundings were particularly stricken  by the blackouts which occurred twice in the same week. UFO News Article:
“RAF RADAR CHIEF: I SAW FLEET OF UFOS”

13 September 2008
(The Sun, London, UK)

Sources: UFO Newsclipping Service, Bainbridge Island, Washington and AFU.se

The whole article (Page 7):
“AN RAF expert yesterday revealed how he tracked a whole fleet of ‘spaceships’ on military radar — but the Ministry of Defence told him to keep quiet.

Wing Commander Alan Turner, 64, said colleagues sat stunned when 35 super-fast vessels appeared on their screens.

Wing Cmdr Turner, who was a chief operator of the RAF’s radar system for 29 years, said the craft were equally spaced and shot from 3,000ft to 60,000ft at almost 300mph.

Incredibly, every few seconds one of the UFOs would suddenly vanish from radar and be replaced by an identical vessel moments later. No aircraft at the time were able to maintain that rate of climb or hold such a formation.

Wing Cmdr Turner – awarded an MBE in 1984 – said six military radars, plus operators at Heathrow, filed reports on the unexplained phenomenon in 1971.

Three days later, a representative for the Ministry of Defence visited the RAF base to instruct them to ‘never speak about the incident again.’ Wing Cmdr Turner, right, who retired from the RAF in 1995, said: ‘UFOs are a fact and I don’t care who knows because I tracked them on military radar units.

‘What I saw defied all logic and was, quite frankly, extraordinary.

‘It wasn’t just me. More than 30 pairs of eyes of RAF staff and radar operators at Heathrow Airport witnessed the same thing.

‘It’s arrogant to believe that we’re the only ones in this universe.’

The dad of three, of Shrewsbury, Shropshire, was a radar supervisor at the now disused RAF Sopley base, Dorset, in 1971. Wing Cdr Turner said: ‘I instantly knew this wasn’t a convoy of military planes.

‘The only craft we knew that had that rate of climb were supersonic lightning aircraft but they wouldn’t have been able  to hold such a perfect formation and they also make a lot of noise. No one heard a thing on the night in question.’

Wing Cmdr Turner is guest speaker at the Close Encounters  conference in Pontefract, West Yorks, next month. Philip Mantle, of UFO Data magazine, said yesterday: ‘His testimony is remarkable.’ ”

The Sun presents a map drawn by Commander Turner. The  map charts the flight of the UFOs in between key sites like RAF Lyneham, Wiltshire, and the VOR aircraft navigation station at Brookmans Park, Hertfordshire.

The UFO incident occurred on 21 April 1971.

UFO Report:
“UFOs Are Stalking and Intercepting Dummy Nuclear Warheads During Test Flights –
Retired U.S. Air Force ICBM Targeting Team
Chief Says The Big Sur Incident Was Not An
Isolated Case”

By Robert L. Hastings, 23 August 2011
(NICAP.org)

Quote from the UFO report:
“Thousands of declassified U.S. government documents and hundreds of military veterans have confirmed the reality of ongoing UFO activity at American nuclear weapons sites. Seven of those veterans participated in my September 27, 2010 press conference in Washington D.C., which CNN streamed live.

I have investigated the UFO-Nukes Connection since 1973 and have interviewed nearly 130 former or retired U.S. military personnel about their experiences at ICBM launch facilities, weapons storage depots, nuclear bomb test sites, and missile test ranges. A summary of their dramatic testimony may be found in my book UFOs and Nukes: Extraordinary Encounters at Nuclear Weapons Sites, which is available only at my website, www.ufohastings.com.

One of the most remarkable cases, known as the Big Sur Incident, involved the inadvertent motion picture filming of a UFO that approached, circled, and—using four beams of light—shot down a dummy nuclear warhead in flight as it raced downrange over the Pacific Ocean to a designated splashdown site near Kwajalein Atoll. Although the exact date is uncertain at this point, because the documents are still classified, the available evidence suggests that this event occurred sometime in September 1964.

The former U.S. Air Force officer in charge of filming the interrupted test flight, former Lt. (now Dr.) Robert M. Jacobs, broke the amazing story in 1982 and has publicly discussed it countless times since then, most recently on the Larry King Live program in July 2008.

Jacobs’ account has been entirely corroborated by another officer, retired Major (later Dr.) Florenze J. Mansmann, who carefully studied the Top Secret film at Vandenberg AFB, California prior to its confiscation by CIA agents. Mansmann said that his frame-by-frame analysis of the footage, using a magnifier, revealed that the UFO—which appeared to the unaided eye as small, white dot—was actually a domed, disc-shaped craft that had pivoted on is vertical axis before emitting each beam of light.

Shortly after releasing the fourth bright burst, the UFO raced out of camera frame while the stricken warhead began to tumble, eventually falling into the ocean hundreds of miles short of its target. Private letters between Jacobs, Mansmann and two other individuals, in which the amazing event is discussed in detail, are available for review.

However, significantly, independent confirmation of UFO activity during missile launches at Vandenberg has appeared in, of all places, The New York Times. On June 17, 1974, the prestigious newspaper carried this story:

HUNTSVILLE, Alabama – Experts at an Army missile base say they are puzzled about strange ‘ghost ships’ picked up by powerful radar scanner in the Pacific during a tracking exercise last summer.

There has been little official comment on what the scientists found during the exercise, but Major Dallas Van Hoose, an Army spokesman, confirmed recently that ‘some unexplained aerial phenomena’ were observed during the exercise last August [1973]. Scientists, many of whom are reluctant to be named in interviews because of general public skepticism over unidentified flying objects, say privately they have been unable to find any explanation for the ‘ghost ships.’

‘We have never seen anything precisely like this before,’ said one ballistic missile defense expert who works for an Army agency here and who is familiar with the advanced radar used to test missiles and warheads. Huntsville houses the Army’s ballistic missile defense systems command which tests in the Kwajelein [sic] Atoll region of the Marshall Island Trust Territory held by the U.S.

Last August the Air Force launched a Minuteman ICBM from Vandenberg Air Force base aimed for the Kwajelein missile range which is used by the Army, Air Force, and Navy. The radar experts in the Pacific found they were also tracking an unidentified flying object next to the ICBM’s nose cone. Radar picked up an inverted saucer-shape object to the right and above the descending nose cone and watched it cross the warhead’s trajectory to a point which was below and to-the-left of it before the phantom ship disappeared. The ghost ship was described as being 10-feet high and 40-feet long. Two separate radar systems saw it at the same time which may eliminate the probability that there was a malfunction in one of the radar systems. It was also reported that 3 other identical objects were seen in the vicinity—the same size, shape, and dimensions. One scientist said the data indicated that the phantom ship ‘flew under its own power’ but could not explain what sort of ‘power’ was involved.

So far none of the experts here believe the ghost ship was a natural phenomenon caused by freak weather conditions or echoes commonly seen on radar screens.”

U.S. Government UFO Document:
“AIR INTELLIGENCE INFORMATION
REPORT – REPORT NO. IR-23-52 –
PAGE 4 OF 16 PAGES”

Unknown date
(Project Blue Book, U.S. Air Force, Washington, D.C.)

Source: NICAP.org

The document pertains to 1st Lieutenant David C. Brigham’s UFO encounter over Misawa, Japan, on 29 March 1952. Brigham flew a T-6 trainer airplane.

Quote from the document (the testimony of David C. Brigham) (not written in U.S. Department of Defense document format) (Page 3):
“(1) At 1120 hours 29 March 52, I was flying a T-6 heading approximately due north at approximately 20 miles north of Misawa over the coast. I was climbing at approximately 130 mph indicated airspeed, altitude approximately 6000 feet. GCI was running an intercept on me with an F-84 flight of two. Call sign of th F-84’s was Frosty Mike 3 and 4. I watched them close on me from about 7:00 o’clock around to about 5:30 and Frosty Mike 3 overtook me passing starboard approximately 100', and approximately 10' below me, taking my number. As he pulled abreast of me at about my 3:00 o’clock position and 10 feet low, a flash of reflected sunshine caught my eye at about 4 o’clock position. The object which had reflected the sunshine was a small shiny disc-shaped object which was making a pass on Mike 3. It closed from slightly above him from approximately 4 o’clock and flew an approximate pursuit curve, appearing to overtake him at around 30 or 40 mph over his airspeed, which I would estimate at approximately 150 to 160 mph. It closed rapidly and just before flying into his fuselage it decelerated to his airspeed almost instantaneously. In doing so it flipped up on its edge at approximately a 90° bank. It then fluttered within 20 feet of his fuselage for perhaps 2 or 3 seconds, pulled away and around his starboard wing, appearing to flip once as it hit the slipstream behind his wing tip fuel tank. Then it passed him; crossed in front of him and pulled up abruptly, appearing to accelerate and shot out of sight in a steep, almost vertical climb.

It was about 8 inches in diameter, very thin, round and as shiny as polished chromium; had no apparent projections, and left no exhaust trails or vapor trails.

An unusual flight characteristic was a slow fluttering motion. It rocked back and forth at approximately 40° banks, at approximately 1 second intervals throughout its course. It was very thin and resembled a round piece of shiny sheet metal.

The weather was very good. I do not remember any clouds that day. Duration of sighting was approximately 10 seconds.

/s/ D. C. Brigham”

Project Blue Book listed the case as “Unknown.”

This report is case #29, on the official clearance list of 41 formerly classified Air Technical Intelligence UFO reports cleared for Maj. Donald E. Keyhoe by Albert M. Chop, Air Force Press Desk. Throughout UFO history; small discs have been reported from time to time that may be remote-controlled devices. The estimates of size range from about eight inches to a few feet in diameter.

Richard Hall:
March 29, 1952; Misawa, Japan
11:20 a.m. local. Lt. David C. Brigham, flying a T-6 as target plane for an intercept exercise by two F-84 jet fighters, saw a small, shiny disc about eight inches in diameter make a pass at one of the F-84s. It flew a pursuit curve and closed rapidly. Just as it would have flown into Brigham’s fuselage it decelerated to his airspeed, almost instantaneously. In doing so, it flipped up on its edge at an approximate 90-degree bank. It fluttered within two feet of his fuselage for perhaps two or three seconds. Then it pulled away around his starboard wing, appearing to flip once as it hit the slipstream behind his wing-tip fuel tank. Dan Wilson:
This was a hot zone for the Russians were moving bombers into China in 1952 (having to do with the Korean War) not far from Japan. It was in December of 1952, that the US Fifth Air Force moved the 49th’s 9th Fighter-Bomber Squadron of F-84Gs from Korea to Japan to train its aircrews in the delivery of tactical atomic weapons.”
