“ ‘WE SWEAR IT’ – With hands on the Bible, Air Force Sergeants Bill Elder, left, and Bob O’Hara take an oath that they saw a fantastic sky form cavorting over a mountain resort near Long Beach, Calif. At left is their sketch of the ‘pinkish, pancake-like affair, with a fin on one side,’ one of the latest in a new rash of ‘flying saucers.’ ”

“Destroyer Tracks Unidentified
‘Object’ Off Southern Coast”

10 November 1950
(The Modesto Bee, California)

Source: Water UFO (waterufo.net)

Quote from the article:
“The United States destroyer Blue (USS Blue (DD-744)) search[ed] the Pacific Ocean off Southern California with radar today, trying to track down a mysterious ‘unidentified object.’

A Navy report said the Blue picked the ‘object’ up on its radar screen and was maintaining the contact.

The Blue, based in San Diego, had the object in its radar screen and was trying to close with it to identify it.

Announcement of the search was made at Washington after San Diego authorities forwarded a report to the Navy Department there.

The announcement made no mention of a submarine and gave no details of when or where contact with the object was made.”

Wikipedia article: “USS Blue (DD-744)”:

Quote from the Wikipedia article:
“Blue was again placed in commission 15 September 1950 and reported to Destroyer Division 131, Pacific Fleet. After engaging in training exercises off the coast of California, she departed San Diego early in 1951 and arrived at Yokosuka, Japan, 23 January. She operated in Korean and Japanese waters until August.”

UFO News Article:
“Brilliant Object Sighted Near California Airliner”

6 October 1950
(Eugene Register-Guard, Oregon)

The whole article:
“A mysterious, brilliantly-lighted object that dived at an airline plane near Burbank, Calif., had aeronautical authorities digging out their ‘flying saucer’ data again Friday.

Capt. Cecil Hardin, captain of California Central Airlines flight No. 71, radioed Lockheed Airport at Burbank, Calif., Thursday night that the mystery object dived on him at 7:32 p.m. between Van Nuys and San Fernando.

Lockheed operations called Van Nuys which reported no aircraft in flight, and reports from air controlling points in the region failed to show any aircraft in the area.

The object, which looked like a flying wing without a fuselage, loomed straight ahead of the plane and then did a half-roll and went under the left wing, Hardin said.

‘We were climbing from the airport. I looked up and there came six or eight brilliant lights. I started to pull up and it went under the wing. We didn’t feel any prop wash.’

‘I couldn’t tell whether it came within 100 feet or 500 feet of us.

Hardin said his co-pilot, Jack Conroy of Glendale, also saw the object. An unidentified woman passenger told him later she saw lights flash by, but paid no attention as her baby started to cry at the time.

Hardin, a former Army transport pilot, guessed the speed of the object was at least equal to that of a jet plane.

He described the object as being ‘about as long as a DC-3’ (about 85 feet) and said the lights must have been on top as he could still see them after the object went under the wing.”

The whole UFO case report (by Dan Wilson):
“June 21, 1950; Hamilton AFB, California (BB)
1:35 a.m. Corp. Roger G. Pryor, a control-tower operator, and S/Sgt. Ellis R. Lorimer, another control-tower operator, and S/Sgt. Virgil Cappuro, member of the airways communications staff, observed an object the airmen described as circular, thick in the center and tapering to the sides. They used binoculars in following its course. The men said the disc was accompanied by a roar like thunder and the blue flame looked like an acetylene torch. They described its approach altitude at between 2000 and 5000 feet. The object made five passes near the base moving at speeds estimated to be between 1000 and 1500 mph. The whole affair lasted for approximately 25 minutes. The PROJECT 10073 RECORD CARD, states that the evaluation on this case is INSUFFICIENT DATA - Report not in file, card not in file, case missing. [UFO Evidence, Section III].”

“Another Flying Saucer Report In California”

21 June 1950
(The Dispatch, Lexington, North Carolina)

Quote from the article:
“The Oakland Tribune said a ‘disc shaped object’ roaring at an estimated speed of 1,000 to 1,500 miles an hour made five passes near Hamilton Air Force Base early today (21 June 1950).

The newspaper quoted three air force non-commissioned officers (Corporal Roger G. Pryor, and the Staff Sergeants Ellis Lorimer and Virgil Cappuro) who said the ‘flying saucer,’ shooting blue flame and with a roar like thunder, dived near a beacon just north of the field.

Hamilton field is 25 miles north of San Francisco.

The Tribune said the airmen described the object as circular, thick in the center and tapering to the sides. They used binoculars in following its course.

The men said the disc was accompanied by a roar like thunder and the blue flame looked like an acetylene torch. They described its approach altitude at between 2,000 and 5,000 feet.”

UFO News Article:
“ ‘FLYING SAUCER’ REPORTS
FROM 100 S.A. PEOPLE”

2 October 1952
(Chronicle, Adelaide, Australia)

Source: Trove, National Library of Australia, Canberra, ACT, Australia

The whole article:
“Nearly 100 people now claim to have seen the strange sky object over SA on Saturday night (27 September 1952).

The first published report was from three young men who claimed to have seen a strange, oval-shaped object shoot across the sky about 8.50 p.m. The object, which glowed a pale red, travelled south, then banked and veered east, disappearing over the Flinders Ranges.

Then reports, which were all similar, were received from Milang, Port Wakefield, Port Pirie, Melrose, Quorn, Sherlock, Whyalla, Kadina, Port Gawler and Adelaide suburbs.

A CMF transport driver who was on a week-end bivouac at Port Wakefleld, said he was sitting in a truck with 12 other men shortly before 9 p.m when one of them exclaimed, ‘Did you ever see anything like that?’

The driver described the object as cigar-shaped, with a curve in it, surrounded by lights.

‘It crossed the camp at about 3,000 ft., and seemed to accelerate as it passed into the distance at great speed.’

The Melrose report said a number of men standing outside the institute saw what looked like a ‘flying saucer’ travelling low on the horizon and maintaining horizontal flight.

A Quorn family reported seeing a strange light in the sky about 8.50 p.m. while returning from Wilmington by car.

One ot the party said the car was stopped to get a better look at the light.

It was very bright and was moving in a north-easterly direction parallel with the ground.

It appeared to disintegrate and disappear.

The Government Astronomer (Mr. G. F. Dodwell) said he had had a steady flow of reports all day and they were extremely helpful.

He would like further reports, however, from more easterly areas such as Murray bridge and the Mannum district.

This would help to gauge height and speed.

The Professor of Physics at the University of Adelaide (Professor L. G. H. Huxley) said it was fairly obvious from the simultaneous times given in the various observations that the object was very large and very high.

There were terrific winds at such heights and the luminous trail of a meteor could be driven at immense speed, even after the meteor had burnt out.”
