The Black Vault article: “Robertson Panel”:

http://www.theblackvault.com/wiki/index.php/Robertson_Panel

The Black Vault article: “Robertson Panel (part):
The Robertson Panel was a committee commissioned by the Central Intelligence Agency in 1952 in responses to widespread Unidentified Flying Object reports, especially in the Washington, D.C. area.

The Robertson Panel first met formally on January 14, 1953 under the direction of Howard Percy Robertson. He was a physicist, a CIA employee and director of the Defense Department Weapons Evaluation Group.

Other panel members were respected scientists and military personnel who had worked on other classified military projects or studies. All were then skeptical of UFO reports, though to varying degrees: Thornton Page, astrophysicist, deputy director of Johns Hopkins' Operations Research Office (was one of seven committee members).

The committee suggested the Air Force should begin a "debunking" effort to reduce "public gullibility" and demystify UFO reports. The panel suggested a public relations campaign, using psychiatrists, astronomers and assorted celebrities to significantly reduce public interest in UFO's. It was also recommended that the mass media be used for the debunking, including influential media giants like Walt Disney Corporation.

Many ufologists argue that the Robertson Panel recommendations were put into effect and the resulting official debunkery relegated the subject matter permanently to the fringe, both in the mainstream media and scientific communities. Also after the Robertson Panel, Project Blue Book was reduced in status and stripped of most of duties of investigating serious UFO cases, which were instead secretly turned over to a newly-formed division of the Air Defense Command. Directives were also issued not to discuss the unexplainable cases with the public and to reduce the percentage of unknowns to a minimum.

Though the CIA's official history suggests that the Robertson Panel's conclusions were never carried out, there is evidence that contradicts this. Perhaps the most unambiguous evidence for the Robertson Panel's covert impact on news media reporting about UFOs is a personal letter by Dr. Thornton Page, discovered in the Smithsonian archives by sociologist Michael D. Swords. The 1966 letter, addressed to former Robertson Panel Secretary Frederick C. Durant, confides that Page "helped organize the CBS TV show around the Robertson Panel conclusions." Page was no doubt referring to the CBS Reports TV broadcast of the same year, "UFOs: Friend, Foe or Fantasy?" narrated by Walter Cronkite. (Incidentally, this program was criticized for inaccurate and misleading presentations). Page's letter indicates that the Robertson Panel was still putting a negative spin on UFO news at least 13 years after the panel met.”

My comment:
In the above article we find clear evidence for the fact that Dr. Thornton Page helped organize the CBS UFO documentary, which was narrated by Walter Cronkite.

The CBS UFO TV news report regarding the 1973 U.S. UFO wave, which I posted an article about on 31 May 2009, makes a whole lot more sense after knowing that the CBS legend Walter Cronkite and CIA committee member Dr. Thornton Page collaborated on a UFO debunking documentary in 1966.

And what’s the picture today? Who knows?! One thing is for certain – I’ve never ever seen a U.S. TV news channel present a self obtained declassified U.S. government FOIA UFO document. Furthermore, I haven’t seen a single TV news channel in Europe present a ditto UFO document either. Why don’t TV news channels want to present previously top secret UFO facts, which have been collected by their own government?

Civilian UFO researchers, both in the U.S. and Europe, have after all unearthed thousands of previously classified government UFO documents during the last three decades.

“Michigan UFO Photo Released”

20 May 1966
(Pacific Stars and Stripes, Tokyo, Japan)

The whole article:
“The Civil Defense director of Hillsdale County, Mich., William Van Horn, issued a 24-page report [report about the 1966 South East Michigan UFO sightings], challenging an Air Force conclusion that ‘swamp gas’ caused the UFO sightings in March. He said conditions at the time were too windy for swamp gas to form. He also released this photo of an object (upper right) as it passed over the area in July, 1965.”

UFO News Article (College Newspaper):
“UFO: In 1966, Hillsdale had
its own close encounter”

19 March 2015
(The Hillsdale Collegian, Hillsdale, Michigan)

NICAP.org UFO case report (see below link):
Brad Sparks:
March 21, 1966. Hillsdale , Michigan (BBU)
10:32, 11 p.m.-4:30 a.m. 17 Hillsdale College students including Barbara Kohn [Cole?] and Cynthia Poffenberger saw a football-shaped object with red-green-white pulsating lights descend from the NE pass close to their dorm then disappear to the S as if crashing to the ground, then return at 11 p.m. William Van Horn, Civil Defense Director and rated commercial pilot, and police arrived and conducted a ground search 1/2 to 2 miles away to the E but found nothing until Van Horn reached the college dorm where he, using binoculars, and [87?] students saw a maneuvering lighted 20-25 ft object on or near the ground about 1,500-1,700 ft away to the E, with a dirty-white light on the left and dim orange on the right, which brightened after 10 mins to white and red and began to rise at a rate of 25-30 ft/min to a height of 100-150 ft (about 3-6 mins), stopped momentarily then descended and repeated the motion several times. At one point on a descent a ‘convexed’ surface (between?) the lights could be seen. Radiation was later detected at the landing area about 330 to 600 microroentgens/hr [milliroentgens/hr ?], roughly 10-60x background level, and possible boron contamination. UFO Lecture:
X-Conference 2004:
Terry Hansen: News Media Complicity

and the Truth Embargo

Terry Hansen is the leading UFOs and the mainstream media researcher in the U.S. Here he presents a well-researched and very convincing lecture pertaining to the collaboration between the so-called Big Media (MSM) corporations and the U.S. military and intelligence communities. Hansen also lays out other very interesting evidences regarding the U.S. military and intelligence communities’ involvement with the UFO phenomenon. The introduction is presented by the X-Conference organiser Stephen Bassett, Paradigm Research Group (PRG) Executive Director:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1qAYxmFsxOM

Hansen presents two pieces of evidence, which proves that CBS collaborated with the CIA in the production of the documentary, ‘CBS Reports: UFO: Friend, Foe Or Fantasy?’

29:51 minutes into the video we are presented with a quote made by Sig Mickelson, the first Director of CBS TV News, who once said, “I didn’t raise an eyebrow about cooperating (with the CIA) back then (the 1950s to 1970s).” So since the Director of CBS TV News admitted that CBS collaborated with the CIA, he of course told the truth! And ‘CBS Reports: UFO: Friend, Foe Or Fantasy?’ was produced in 1966.

48 minutes into the video, Hansen presents the actual hand written letter (mentioned in my previous article), which Dr. Thornton Page sent to Fred Durant regarding the CIA’s role in the production of the aforementioned documentary.

Comment by the video source:
“NEWS MEDIA COMPLICITY AND THE TRUTH EMBARGO, with Terry Hansen. A mesmerizing account of his investigation into whether some of America's most influential news organizations, many having maintained close ties to the U.S. intelligence community, have willingly suppressed full and accurate news coverage of extraterrestrial related phenomena for a variety of "national-security" reasons. Hansen reveals the remarkable and persistent difference in UFO-related news coverage exhibited by local and national news organizations and reviews the history of censorship and propaganda during the twentieth century and the evidence for media-government collusion over the course of the half-century-long UFO controversy.

Terry Hansen is an independent journalist with an interest in scientific controversies and the politics of mass media. He is the author of the book, “The Missing Times: News Media Complicity in the UFO Cover-up”. He has organized and moderated two symposiums about the science and politics of UFO research for the Science Museum of Minnesota. Hansen holds a bachelor’s degree in biology and a master’s degree in science journalism, both from the University of Minnesota. He was a founding partner of KFH Publications, Inc., a Seattle computer-magazine publishing company. This presentation covers some of the more recent and important stories that have been suppressed by the media cartels and powers-that-be.”

UFO News Article:
“Civil Defense’s UFO Probe
Explained By Its Director”

14 October 1966
(The Hillsdale Daily News, Michigan)

Source: NewspaperArchive.com

The whole article:
“ ‘It is dangerous to the welfare of the nation for our government to try to ridicule and harass people. This was what was done during the local UFO excitement earlier in the year. I believe we have made our point. The University of Colorado now has been assigned to look more thoroughly into the handling of UFO sightings. I don’t think we’ll have any more brushoffs based on the swamp gas contention.’

Willian (Bud) Van Horn, Hillsdale County civil defense director, concluded his talk before the Rotary Club Thursday with this statement.

For 35 minutes he traced the efforts of himself and his colleagues to handle the UFO (Unidentified Flying Objects) reports received at his office since last March and to keep the community from being ridiculed.

He was especially vehement in his criticism of Dr. J. Allen Hynek, Northwestern University scientist who made a cursory study here after the Hillsdale College coed sightings on March 21 made headlines throughout the nation.

Since last March there have been at least two other UFO incidents worthy of note by the local CD office, Mr. Van Horn said.

*  *  *

One was from a woman who heard her dog barking at night. She told the CD office that she looked out in time to see a vehicle settling in a field.

Four women in the North Adams-Jerome region had an object orbit their car. It apparently had an effect on the vehicle because the driver put the car into second gear and pressed the accelerator to the floorboard, yet could develop a speed of only 20 miles an hour. The four ran to a nearby house occupied by five persons. All nine looked out to see a vehicle hovering around the barn.

Mr. Van Horn said his Civil Defense organization made extensive investigations of all reports both during and since March. He told about finding radioactivity in places where UFO’s had been reported, of pure boron found in water, of blips on Air Force radar screens (later denied by the AF) and of unusual metal shavings found in a field less than a month ago.

Mr. Van Horn said the government has no business trying to keep people quiet about UFO sightings. He said that the 24-page report he issued to disprove Dr. Hynek’s swamp gas claims has never been rebutted by the Air Force or Dr. Hynek.

A different attitude on the part of the government is now indicated, the speaker said. The investigative work done here by the local CD has helped to bring this about, Mr. Van Horn feels.”

My comment:
This is a very interesting article about some of the 1966 UFO sightings in the Hillsdale, Michigan, area (South East Michigan). The article, among other things, discusses UFO cases that involve animal reaction (dog)/UFO landing, electromagnetic (EM) interference with a car engine and radioactivity.

UFO News Article:
“UFO Sighted by Officers”

7 October 1965
(Traverse City Record-Eagle, Michigan)

Source: NewspaperArchive.com

The whole article:
“Three [Coldwater, Michigan] sheriff’s deputies sent verify a rash of unidentified flying object sightings said Wednesday they watched a strange white object zip through the sky for a half hour.

The deputies said they watched through binoculars Tuesday night [5 October 1965] as the glowing object stopped abruptly, rose vertically, then sped from sight.

Their report was similar to many from this southern Michigan area during the past four or five nights. Resident reported bright objects with blinking green, blue and red rays.

The Air Force’s main Michigan center at Battle Creek said it had received no UFO reports and had spotted nothing unusual on radar. The sheriff’s office here said it had not reported the sightings to the Air Force.”

My comment:
These UFO incidents occurred five months before the March 1966 South East Michigan UFO flap.
