UFO News Article (College Newspaper):
“UFO: In 1966, Hillsdale had
its own close encounter”
19 March 2015
(The Hillsdale Collegian, Hillsdale ,
Michigan )
NICAP.org UFO case
report (see below link):
“Brad Sparks:
March 21, 1966. Hillsdale , Michigan (BBU)
10:32, 11 p.m.-4:30 a.m.
17 Hillsdale College students including Barbara Kohn [Cole?] and Cynthia
Poffenberger saw a football-shaped object with red-green-white pulsating lights
descend from the NE pass close to their dorm then disappear to the S as if
crashing to the ground, then return at 11 p.m. William Van Horn, Civil Defense
Director and rated commercial pilot, and police arrived and conducted a ground
search 1/2 to 2 miles away to the E but found nothing until Van Horn
reached the college dorm where he, using binoculars, and [87?] students saw a
maneuvering lighted 20-25 ft object on or near the ground about 1,500-1,700
ft away to the E, with a dirty-white light on the left and dim orange on the
right, which brightened after 10 mins to white and red and began to rise at a
rate of 25-30 ft/min to a height of 100-150 ft (about 3-6 mins), stopped momentarily
then descended and repeated the motion several times. At one point on a descent
a ‘convexed’ surface (between?) the lights could be seen. Radiation was later
detected at the landing area about 330 to 600 microroentgens/hr
[milliroentgens/hr ?], roughly 10-60x background level, and possible boron
contamination. (Sparks ;
Vallée Magonia 732; Todd Lemire; etc.)”

UFO News Article:
“Civil Defense’s UFO Probe
Explained By Its Director”
14 October 1966
(The Hillsdale Daily News, Michigan )
Source: NewspaperArchive.com
The whole article:
“ ‘It is dangerous to the welfare of the nation for our government to
try to ridicule and harass people. This was what was done during the local UFO
excitement earlier in the year. I believe we have made our point. The University of Colorado now has been assigned to look
more thoroughly into the handling of UFO sightings. I don’t think we’ll have
any more brushoffs based on the swamp gas contention.’
Willian (Bud) Van Horn, Hillsdale
County civil defense
director, concluded his talk before the Rotary Club Thursday with this
statement.
For 35 minutes he traced the efforts of himself and his colleagues to
handle the UFO (Unidentified Flying Objects) reports received at his office
since last March and to keep the community from being ridiculed.
He was especially vehement in his criticism of Dr. J. Allen Hynek, Northwestern University
scientist who made a cursory study here after the Hillsdale College
coed sightings on March 21 made headlines throughout the nation.
Since last March there have been at least two other UFO incidents worthy
of note by the local CD office, Mr. Van Horn said.
*
* *
One was from a woman who heard her dog barking at night. She told the CD
office that she looked out in time to see a vehicle settling in a field.
Four women in the North Adams-Jerome region had an object orbit their
car. It apparently had an effect on the vehicle because the driver put the car
into second gear and pressed the accelerator to the floorboard, yet could
develop a speed of only 20
miles an hour. The four ran to a nearby house occupied
by five persons. All nine looked out to see a vehicle hovering around the barn.
Mr. Van Horn said his Civil Defense organization made extensive investigations
of all reports both during and since March. He told about finding radioactivity
in places where UFO’s had been reported, of pure boron found in water, of blips
on Air Force radar screens (later denied by the AF) and of unusual metal
shavings found in a field less than a month ago.
Mr. Van Horn said the government has no business trying to keep people
quiet about UFO sightings. He said that the 24-page report he issued to
disprove Dr. Hynek’s swamp gas claims has never been rebutted by the Air Force
or Dr. Hynek.
A different attitude on the part of the government is now indicated, the
speaker said. The investigative work done here by the local CD has helped to
bring this about, Mr. Van Horn feels.”
My comment:
This is a very interesting article about some of the 1966 UFO sightings
in the Hillsdale, Michigan ,
area (South East Michigan). The article, among other things, discusses UFO
cases that involve animal reaction (dog)/UFO landing, electromagnetic (EM) interference
with a car engine and radioactivity.

“UFO Sighted by Officers”
7 October 1965
(Traverse City Record-Eagle , Michigan )
Source: NewspaperArchive.com
The whole article:
“Three [Coldwater,
Michigan] sheriff’s deputies sent verify a rash of unidentified flying object
sightings said Wednesday they watched a strange white object zip through the
sky for a half hour.
The deputies said they watched through binoculars
Tuesday night [5 October 1965] as the glowing object stopped abruptly, rose
vertically, then sped from sight.
Their report was similar to many from this southern Michigan area during the
past four or five nights. Resident reported bright objects with blinking green,
blue and red rays.
The Air Force’s main Michigan
center at Battle Creek
said it had received no UFO reports and had spotted nothing unusual on radar.
The sheriff’s office here said it had not reported the sightings to the Air
Force.”
My comment:
These UFO incidents occurred five months before the
March 1966 South East Michigan UFO flap.

The whole article:
“The
Civil Defense director of Hillsdale County, Mich., William Van Horn, issued a
24-page report [report about the 1966 South East Michigan UFO
sightings], challenging an Air Force conclusion that
‘swamp gas’ caused the UFO sightings in March. He said conditions at the time
were too windy for swamp gas to form. He also released this photo of an object
(upper right) as it passed over the area in July, 1965.”

UFO News Article:
“ ‘This Thing Like a Ball of Fire’…Just Gas?”
3 April 1966
(Detroit Free Press, Michigan )
Source: Newspapers.com
This is a large, brilliant article (includes a map of
the sightings) about the March 1966 Southern Michigan UFO flap.
Quote from the article:
“ ‘. . . A whirlwind came out of the north, and a
brightness WAS about it … the colour of amber, out of the midst of the fire.’
—Ezekiel
1:4
‘It WAS an
object . . . I don’t care who believes me. I believe me.’
—Frank Mannor
When the
strange object landed on the banks of the river Chebar thousands of years ago,
the Biblical prophet ‘beheld . . . four living creatures . . . in the likeness
of man, every one with four faces.’
The object
Frank Mannor beheld in the swamp behind his farm home near Dexter, in Washtenaw County , March 20 disgorged no living
creatures.
But he’s
absolutely certain that ‘we seen this thing like a ball of fire, maybe more
like a shooting star, come out of the west, then drop below a clump of trees
half a mile behind the house.’
The
47-year-old sometime truck driver’s account of his experience, as graphic as
Ezekiel’s in the Bible, was the dramatic highlight of Michigan ’s biggest ‘flying saucer’ spree.
WHAT LENT
IT widespread credibility was the corroborating testimony: Reports of sightings
of Unidentified Flying Objects (UFO’s) similar to Mannor’s description, by
dozens of southeastern Michigan
police officers trained to prevent mass hysteria rather than encourage it.
…
THE PHENOMENON started March 14 during a routine
patrol by Car 19, Washtenaw County Sheriff’s Department. Here’s how it appears
on the official reports:
‘3:50 a.m. Received call from Deputies (Robert)
Bushroe and (John) Foster. Stating that they saw some suspicious objects in the
sky. Disc, star like colors red and green, moving very fast, making sharp
turns, having left to right movements, going in a northwest direction.
‘5:04 a.m. [most likely at 4:04 a.m.] Livingston County called and stated that they also
saw the objects. . . .
‘4:05 a.m.—Ypsilanti Police stated that the object was
seen at the location of US-12 and I-94.
‘4:10 a.m. Monroe
County called and they
also saw the objects.
‘4:20 a.m. (Bushroe and Foster) saw four more in the
same location moving at a high rate of speed. . . .
‘4:54 a.m. Two more were spotted coming from the
southeast, over Monroe
County .
‘5:30 Dep. Patterson & I (Cpl. Broderick) looked
out of the office and saw a bright light that appeared to be over the Ypsilanti area. It looked
like a star, but was moving from north to east.’
Bushroe added this note when he returned from patrol.
‘This is the strangest thing that Deputy Foster and
myself have ever witnessed. We would not have beleaved [sic] this story if we hadn’t seen it with our own eyes. These
objects could move at fantastic speeds, and make very sharp turns dive and
climb, and hover with great maneuverability. We have no idea of what these
objects were, or where they could have come from. At 4:20 a.m. there were 4 of
these objects flying in a line formation, in a northwesterly direction, at 5:30
these objects went out of view and were not seen again.’
That same morning, Dexter Patrolman Robert Hunawill
was on patrol with Patrolman Richard Alexa and two county deputies. He said:
‘We first saw them in the early morning, maybe about 4 a .m. . . . We saw red and
white lights off in the distance, about four of them.’
HUNAWILL later reported eight other sightings and took
photographs several times.
‘Again in the 20th,’ he said, ‘my wife and I saw four
objects hovering over the Mannor farm while the deputies were searching the
swamp. Later that night, we’d just come home and were pulling into the driveway
when one of the objects came over the house at no more than 3,000 feet . Took a
couple of minutes to pass over. A couple of deputies followed it out of town
and saw it hover over Island Lake
Road in the direction of the Mannor farm.
‘It’s not marsh gas. My reaction to Dr. Hynek is the
same as the rest of the people around here. He made us look like fools. I don’t
think he’ll get any co-operation out of these people any more.’
THURSDAY morning, March 17: Washtenaw Deputies David
Fitzpatrick and Nuel Schneider had been called out on a minor accident.
Fitzpatrick’s account:
‘We seen three different objects in the sky to the
south of us. Two of these objects were close together and the other farther to
the east. On one of these object we could see on one side white light and on
the other a green light.
‘We headed south towards Milan on Marion Road . At this time we stopped the
patrol car and looked back to the west and at the same time looked toward the
east and seen a real bright object hovering over what looked like US-23.
‘We then drove to Arkona and Carpenter Roads and
Deputy Hennes let us use his field glasses. At the time we seen this strange
object and some colors. The top of it was yellowish blue-green, and the bottom
bright red with what looked like black marks across it.
‘The object itself looked like a toy top. When at the
above location, we were about five to 10 miles from this object.
‘This seems very unbelievable and something right out
of these science fiction movies on TV!’
NEXT: The Mannor sighting.
‘We all run out on the porch and we seen this thing
like a ball of fire, maybe more like a shooting star, come out of the west,
then drop below a clump of trees maybe half a mile behind the house.
‘Me and Ronnie (Mannor’s 19-year-old son) decided to
come down for a look. My wife, Lena , kicked up
an awful fuss, Said we might get radioactive.
‘I told her if they was anything radioactive we’d get
it just as bad in the house as down in the swamp. I asked my two sons-in-law to
come, but their wives wouldn’t let ’em.
‘We come over that knoll just this side of the swamp
and there it was, about eye-level with us, no more than 500 yards away. It had a
blue light in front, and in the back a light that kept changing from red to
white, like it was rotating, like the light on a police car.
‘It was almost flat on the bottom, and kinda high and
peaked on top. We couldn’t see much except the outline and the lights at the
end, because the whole thing was wrapped in a light like a halo, and it kept
shimmering.’
The next night, Mrs. Mary Leonard and her three
children returned from buying groceries to their home just southwest of Ann Arbor .
‘There was just one light,’ said Mrs. Leonard. ‘It
glowed off and on, and it zig-zagged a little. It was greenish and reddish, and
it looked like it had a little light on it. We saw it in the southwest about
8:30 p.m., more than half way up from the horizon.’ ”
