“August 16

1897 – On this night at 12:40 a.m. a giant airship followed a train as it rounded a bend in the tracks around Heron Bay, Ontario, Canada and then flew off inland to the north >N inland. It had body lights and light beams. (Source: Larry Hatch, U computer database, case # 208, citing Brad Steiger).”

“Category 3, E-M (Electro-Magnetic) Case –
UFO Stops Train – Oct. 20, 1973 –
6-7 mi. East of Mt. Vernon, Indiana”

By Francis Ridge
(NICAP.org)

Quote from the UFO case report:
“Fran Ridge:
Oct. 20, 1973; Mt. Vernon, Indiana
6:50 a.m. The primary witness was a conductor on a L&N train that had an encounter with a UFO. Mt. Vernon, is a little town 15 miles west of the city of Evansville. They had passed through Mt. Vernon and were headed east nearing the Lamont crossing, which is about 2-miles west of the outskirts of Evansville. A nocturnal light incident had preceded this close encounter. When they neared Caborn (6-7 miles east of Mt. Vernon), the conductor told the rear conductors by intercom that they had seen a real bright light behind them. When they got near St. Phillips, the rear conductor reported that there now was a train following them, on the same track, and the RR blocking system showed something approaching them. As they approached a steep hill at the Lamont Crossing, one of the diesel engine units overheated and the train was immobilized. When the object behind the train backed away, the blocking system showed the object retreating. The diesel unit was now restarted and the train, loaded down with coal, made it up the hill and on into Evansville. See full report. (UFO Filter Center, FI Francis Ridge, MUFON SSD).”

UFO Intelligence Summary:
“Subject: UFOs & Trains”

By Francis Ridge, 7 January 2015 (Updated: 16 January 2015)
(NICAP.org)

Quote from the intelligence summary:
“My interest in trains and UFOs stems from at least four things:
1) I investigated the L&N train incident in 1973.
2) UFO sightings involving trains, especially close encounters, are rare.
3) Most modern train engines are diesel powered and there has been some interest in the fact that conventional engines of all types are affected by UFOs and diesels had not been.
4) And extremely interesting is the fact that ALL of the U.S. incidents happened in the midwest!

On 15 April 1897, a train (running at 65 km/h) going towards Quincy (Missouri) was outdistanced by a UFO, according to Ridge.

UFO News Article:
“Witnesses share UFO reports”

4 July 1997
(McCook Daily Gazette, Nebraska)

The article reports on several South West Nebraska UFO sightings:

Quote from the article:
“Several years ago – The California Zephyr train was eastbound out of McCook on a clear night headed to Hastings.

When the train reached Kenesaw, a row of lights appeared in the sky, visible to the engineer and train crew. The lights were beside the train, then in front of the train, and then shot up and out of sight.

About an hour later and 50 miles away, a village marshal reported that something had landed at the trash dump. The marshal said the object, which looked like other reported spaceships, was on the ground for a short time before it lifted off and flew straight up into the sky.

‘Was something in the air that clear night that would cause normally stable and reliable persons to report such things?’ a railroad veteran from McCook wrote about the sightings. ‘Your guess is as good as mine.’ ”

UFO Report:
“Subject: Fostoria, Ohio, late October 1977
Close Encounter From a Train”

By Francis Ridge, 29 July 2007
(NICAP.org)

Quote from the report:
“On this night, possibily the 21st of October, the engineer who we shall call Howard J. Albert, was sitting in his locomotive cab on the main line track. It was cold and clear. Several box cars had been cut loose and were parked to the south of the switch track to the warehouse. The engine was coupled up to the rest of the cars which were being moved into position within the warehouse. At about 3:20 AM Howard saw what looked to be a shooting star to the west; it curved down out of the northwest. He was sitting in his cab facing southbound. The first box car blocked his view in this direction. The light came down in the field toward Route 23 between him and the church. Slowly, at about the speed of a walking man, it came toward him across the field. It was approximately 16 feet off the ground and stopped on the other side of the tracks between four and five box car lengths away – 180 to 270 feet.

Howard picked up his radio and called out to his conductor who was about seven or eight car lengths down the track, ‘Donald...come up to the engine.’ Donald replied by radio and asked what was happening. Howard answered, ‘Hey, we got a g- d— UFO up here.’ By this time the UFO had moved to within two car lengths of the track.

The object was ‘birthday cake’ or disk shaped, about 90 feet in diameter and 45 feet high. It was brightly lit, with banks of nine vertical ‘tubes’ separated by a dark void space that reflected no light. Short horizonal tubes ran over the top and bottom of these voids. The bottom of the disk could be seen; it appeared like ceramic and was ‘the color of a common kind of knife sharpening stone...gray with a trace of lavender.’ No windows, ladders, antenna, or markings of any sort were observed. There was no sound associated with the disk.”

UFO News Article:
“FLYING DISKS IN JAPAN”

12 July 1947
(The West Australian, Perth, Australia)

Source: National Library of Australia, Canberra, ACT, Australia

The whole article:
“ ‘Flying saucers’ have now appeared over Japan. The first flight was reported by a police officer at Kagoshima (Southern Kyushu) where the Allied invasion of Japan would have occurred in 1945 if the Japanese had not surrendered. The police officer, Shigeru Arrifuku, who made the report said that while on duty shortly after midnight on July 9 he saw some disk-shaped brilliant objects flying over Kagoshima Bay in a wave-like manner. The objects were flying north-east at a height of about 3,000ft.”

UFO Article (Blog):
“Massive New Digitisation Of Newspapers
Will Add To Australian UFO History,
If Anyone Can Be Bothered”

By Paul Dean, 4 November 2015
(UFOs – Documenting The Evidence, Melbourne, Australia)

Quote from the article:
“The National Library of Australia (NLA) maintains endeavour named ‘Trove’ which is an online library ‘database aggregator’ and ‘free faceted-search engine.’ Trove brings together content from libraries, newspapers, museums and other research organisations and helps users explore them. In the NLA’s own words:

‘Trove helps you find resources about Australia and by Australians. We do this by collecting information from many organisations around the world. This information about resources, also known as metadata, is processed for easy searching through the Trove website…’

For Australian UFO researchers, Trove’s digitised newspaper section is the thing most invaluable. The NLA says:

‘The digitised newspaper zone is the most heavily-used part of Trove, and no wonder – more than 100 million newspaper articles, documenting more than 150 years of Australian history. And it’s growing all the time. All digitised, all free, all for you.’

Recently, nearly a dozen new newspapers – some dating from 1915 – have been added to the archive. And they are absolutely jam-packed with articles, editorials and opinion pieces about UFO’s, especially reports of UFO events that are completely new to us.”

UFO Article (Blog):
“NORAD And The UFO Smokescreen – Part 5”

By Paul Dean, 18 November 2015
(UFOs – Documenting The Evidence, Melbourne, Australia)

Paul Dean is researching what role the North American Aerospace Defense Command has maintained regarding the UFO matter:

Quote from the article:
This is Part 5 of an ongoing series regarding the North American Aerospace Defence Command (NORAD) and their involvement UFO phenomenon. I have already detailed over a dozen pages of declassified military documents that show us that tangible UFO events have come to the attention of NORAD.

Dealing with NORAD is not easy. Normally, one would request information under the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) from an American government agency, or under the Access to Information Act (ATIA) from a Canadian government agency. However, NORAD is a ‘bi-national’ organisation, and the governments involved decided to ‘exempt’ it from either FOIA or ATIA in 1982. However, the US’s Northern Command (NORTHCOM), who partly controls NORAD, can process FOI requests for NORAD records – but everything is on NORAD’s terms. The actual response one gets from the NORTHCOM FOIA and Privacy Act Requester Service Center at Peterson Air Force Base for NORAD records is, except in exceedingly rare cases:

‘NORAD as a bi-national organization is not subject to FOIA. No search of records will be conducted.’ ”

UFO Report:
“Subject: Skylab III Case, in Orbit,
over SW Indian Ocean, Sept. 20, 1973”

By Francis Ridge, 13 November 2012
(NICAP.org)

Quote from the report:
“Fran Ridge:

In 1973 we had no large orbiting space station circling the Earth at a time when one of the largest UFO flaps to hit the planet was in progress. A document that was found indicates that the location was over the southwestern Indian Ocean during revolution # 1863. Astronauts Alan Bean, Owen Garriott and Jack Lousma spotted what they described as a red ‘satellite,’ which they photographed and mentioned during a subsequent debriefing. We have radio conversation (transcript only) with Houston CapCom about 4.5 hours after the sighting of this object. There was no man-made satellite that could explain this sighting and hence the object was truly anomalous.”

Quote from the web page:
“QUESTION:
I was wondering how many astronauts have sighted a UFO in space?

ANSWER from Tony Ceccacci on October 26, 1998:
The only astronaut that has talked openly about seeing a UFO during a shuttle flight was (ex astronaut) Story Musgrave. Others may have seen something but haven’t told anybody.”

U.S. Government UFO Article:
“Astonauts and UFO Sightings”

(Solar System Exploration Research Virtual Institute (SSERVI), NASA Ames Research Center, Mountain View, California)

Quote from the article:
I wrote that no astronaut has seen a UFO in space.  While Gordon Cooper thinks he saw unexplained phenomena while flying in the 1950s, this obviously was not from space.  Concerning claims that he has seen a UFO from space, the 1999 Space.com article you refer to quotes Cooper saying ‘No, somebody made a lot of money selling lies on that one… It was totally untrue, sorry to say.’
Concerning Buzz Aldrin, he was misquoted, with the explanatory part truncated from the interview as aired, as we explained in an earlier answer here (use the search engine to find it).  Sorry, but there is no compelling evidence for space aliens, and certainly not from NASA astronauts.  Be skeptical; there are a lot of false or misleading claims about UFOs circulating.
