UFO News Article:
“CZ B-26’s B-17 Chase Two Flying Saucers”

21 December 1952

(The Panama American, Panama)

The whole article:

“It didn’t get into the papers, but the Panama Canal Zone was completely mystified by two flying saucers which flew over the area for five hours and 36 minutes Nov. 25 [1952].

The Air Force actually sent up two B-26’s, one B-17, and one Navy patrol bomber to try to intercept the flying objects, but failed.

An official cable to Washington from the Panama Canal Zone states that ‘two unidentified objects’ were sighted over the Canal Zone Nov. 25 from 6:06 p.m. to 11:42 p.m.

The sighting was made by radar attached to anti-aircraft guns.

The two flying saucers, or whatever they were, remained over the Canal Zone for 5 ½ hours, traveling at an estimated speed of 275 mph and maneuvering from 1,000 ft. to 28,000 ft. in altitude.

Since no U.S. aircraft were supposed to be flying in the vicinity at that time, the air defense commander was sufficiently stirred up over the mysterious sighting to send three Air Force bombers and one Navy patrol bomber up to intercept the flying saucers.

However, they were unable to catch the elusive objects, which made absolutely no sound.”

UFO Case Directory (RADCAT):
“Radar Lock Broken By UO
March 9, 1958
Panama Canal Zone”

(NICAP.org)

NICAP.org presents U.S. government UFO documents that pertain to the 9-10 March 1958 Panama Canal Zone UFO case.

The whole UFO case report:
Fran Ridge:
This is an interesting uncorrelated target incident, supported by 17 Blue Book documents.

Dan Wilson:
March 9-10, 1958; Panama Canal Zone
At around  2000 hours an unidentified object was picked up on search radar approaching the Pacific side of the Isthmus of Panama. At 2045 hours two additional blips were observed. These returns were transferred to track radar. During the period of observation the radar lock was broken, the equipment immediately picked up the target and locked on again. A second radar tracking station also locked onto the return. The manner of flight of the objects was steady, slightly circular path over the vicinity of Fort Kobbe, Canal Zone. There was such rapid movement of the object that it broke the lock of the track radar. It was assumed that these were solid objects as track radar can only be locked on a solid object. At 2400 hours, radar advised that as soon as a searchlight was employed the object became evasive. (Dan Wilson)”

If you compare the “AIR INTELLIGENCE INFORMATION REPORT” (“SUBJECT: Unidentified Flying Object Report”) (U.S. Air Force) document (580309panamacanalzone_docs.pdf) (Pages 4-10) with the Project Blue Book (U.S. Air Force) document (580309panamacanalzone_docs.pdf) (Pages 1-3) – you clearly see that PBB tries to explain away this UFO case.

Quote from the “AIR INTELLIGENCE INFORMATION REPORT” (“SUBJECT: Unidentified Flying Object Report”/“DATE OF REPORT: 18 March 1958”) document:
“10 March

11:20          AF 5289 (T-33) airborne to check UFO. UFO was observed to avoid jet. As soon as jet got close, UFO appeared to move away for several miles, then stop.

12:00          Jet returned to Howard. Pilot called and advised nothing was seen. Also advised Weather Build-up. Radar advised they could distinguish UFO from clouds and build-ups.”
