“It didn’t get into the papers, but the Panama Canal Zone was completely mystified by two flying saucers which flew over the area for five hours and 36 minutes Nov. 25 [1952].

The Air Force actually sent up two B-26’s, one B-17, and one Navy patrol bomber to try to intercept the flying objects, but failed.

An official cable to Washington from the Panama Canal Zone states that ‘two unidentified objects’ were sighted over the Canal Zone Nov. 25 from 6:06 p.m. to 11:42 p.m. 

The sighting was made by radar attached to anti-aircraft guns.

The two flying saucers, or whatever they were, remained over the Canal Zone for 5 ½ hours, traveling at an estimated speed of 275 mph and maneuvering from 1,000 ft. to 28,000 ft. in altitude.

Since no U.S. aircraft were supposed to be flying in the vicinity at that time, the air defense commander was sufficiently stirred up over the mysterious sighting to send three Air Force bombers and one Navy patrol bomber up to intercept the flying saucers.

However, they were unable to catch the elusive objects, which made absolutely no sound.”

The two Miami, Florida, airline pilots, William B. Nash and William H. Fortenberry (Pan American World Airways), sighted 8 UFOs over the Chesapeake Bay, east of Washington, D.C., on 14 July 1952  (see Nash/Fortenberry link).

“The government’s policy in saying that flying saucers and other unidentified flying objects do not exist is ‘not wise,’ Rev. Albert H. Baller of Greenfield, noted authority and lecturer, told members of the Fitchburg Lions Club last night.

Speaking at the weekly meeting af the Lions Club at the King’s Corner Restaurant at which members of the Athol Lions Club were guests, Rev. Mr. Baller told his audience that public interest in the unidentified flying objects has increased since the launching of the Sputnik I and II by the Russians.

‘I have noted a radical change in the reaction of people listening to my talk on flying saucers since the launching of the satellites,’ he stated.

His belief

Rev. Mr. Baller told his listeners, ‘if the government knows what I think it knows about flying saucers—that we are being visited from outer space—I think it should inform the public.’

He stated that evidence has shown that the flying saucers and other unidentified objects sighted throughout the world in the past decade are ‘not secret weapons of the United States or any other nation’ but what he termed ‘interlopers from outer space.’

In spite of its efforts to minimize reports of flying saucers, Rev. Mr. Baller stated, the [Air Force] has said that only two per cent of the reports are hoaxes and some mirages.

‘Seen Several Times’

‘Hallucinations have been ruled out as an explanation for reported sightings of the flying saucers,’ he said, ‘because the objects have been seen several times by more than one person.’

In response to a question from the audience concerning the lack of printed reports of what trained astronomers have thought about flying saucers, Rev. Mr. Baller answered that Dr. Lincoln [LaPaz], the discoverer of the planet Pluto, ‘for one, takes it extremely serious.’

‘Several astronomers have seen these things,’ he added.

Rev. Mr. Baller told his audience that he ‘has spoken to several influential men in the Pentagon’ and especially in the [Air Force] about the phenomena of flying saucers and stated that they are ‘very much concerned.’

‘In playing down reports of sightings of unidentified flying objects, the [Air Force] is saying that its own men can’t be trusted in these things,’ he said.

Warns of Crackpots

‘The field of unidentified flying objects is a vital and serious field of research,’ Rev. Mr. Baller stated. ‘However, it is wide open for every crackpot in the world.’

Rev. Mr. Baller’s talk was highlighted by the showing of more than 50 colored slides on the phenomena of flying saucers including many sketches of the different sizes and shapes of saucers reported seen throughout the world.

Also included were tape-recorded interviews with three of Rev. Mr. Baller’s neighbors in Greenfield who have sighted the objects over Massachusetts skies.

Saw 3 Objects

The speaker told how he became interested in the field of investigating flying saucers and other unidentified flying objects after sighting three spherical objects in the sky on Feb. 20, 1952.

‘I had been reading some books and other material on the mysterious flying objects with some scepticism, but sighting them myself gave me a tremendous push toward the investigation which I am now carrying out,’ he stated.

Rev. Mr. Baller is a member of the board of governors of the National Investigations Committee on Aerial Phenomena with headquarters at Washington, D. C., and also is a member of the Flying Saucer Research Society of London, the Australian Flying Saucer Research Society in addition to several other civilian organizations studying the phenomena of aerial objects.

A graduate of Nebraska Wesleyan University and the Boston University School of Theology, he is rector of the Robbins Memorial Church in Greenfield.

Arthur J. Lanides and Norman H. Crawford were co-chairmen of the Lions Club program committee.”

NOTE: The planet, Pluto, was discovered by U.S. astronomer Clyde William Tombaugh in 1930, not by Dr. Lincoln LaPaz.

1. On 20 August, the DCI, after a briefing by OSI on the above subject, directed the preparation of an NSCID for submission to the Council stating the need for investigation and directing agencies concerned to cooperate on such investigations.

2. In attempting to draft such a directive and the supporting staff studies, it became apparent to DD/I, Acting AD/SI and AD/IC that the problem was largely a research and development problem, and it was decided by DD/I to attempt to initiate action through R&DB. A conference was held between DI/USAF, Chairman of R&DB, DD/I, Acting AD/SI and AD/IC at which time it was decided that Dr. Whitman, Chairman of R&DB, would investigate the possibility of undertaking research and development studies through Air Force agencies.

3. On approximately 6 November, we were advised by Chairman, R&DB, that inquiries in the Air Staff did not disclose ‘undue concern’ over this matter, but that it had been referred to the Air Defense Command for consideration. No further word has been received from R&DB.

4. Recent reports reaching CIA indicated that further action was desirable and another briefing by the cognizant A-2 and ATIC personnel was held on 25 November. At this time, the reports of incidents convince us that there is something going on that must have immediate attention. The details of some of these incidents have been discussed by AD/SI with DDCI. Sighting of unexplained objects at great altitudes and travelling at high speeds in the vicinity of major U.S. defense installations are of such nature that they are not attributable to natural phenomena or known types of aerial vehicles.

5. OSI is proceeding to the establishment of a consulting group of sufficient competence and stature to review this matter and convince the responsible authorities in the community that immediate research and development on this subject must be undertaken. This can be done expeditiously under the aegis of CENIS.”

From about 3:50 a.m. on March 14 and for 2-1/2 hours thereafter, Washtenaw County sheriffs and police in neighboring jurisdictions reported disc-shaped objects moving at fantastic speeds and making sharp turns, diving and climbing, and hovering. At one point, four UFOs in straight-line formation were observed. Selfridge AFB confirmed tracking UFOs over Lake Erie at 4:56 a.m. Following is the log of ‘Complaint No. 00967’ signed by Cpl. Broderick and Deputy Patterson of the Washtenaw County Sheriff’s Department:

‘3:50 a.m. Received calls from Deputies Bushroe and Foster, car 19, stating that they saw some suspicious objects in the sky, disc, star-like colors, red and green, moving very fast, making sharp turns, having left to right movements, going in a Northwest direction.

4:04 a.m. Livingston County [sheriff’s department] called and stated that they also saw the objects, and were sending car to the location.

4:05 a.m. Ypsilanti Police Dept. also called stated that the object was seen at the location of US-12 and I-94 [intersection of a U.S. and an Interstate highway].

4:10. a.m. Monroe County [sheriff’s department] called and stated that they also saw the objects.

4:20 a.m. Car 19 stated that they just saw four more in the same location moving at a high rate of speed.

4:30 a.m. Colonel Miller [county civil defense director] was called; he stated just to keep an eye on the objects that he did not know what to do, and also check with Willow Run Airport.

4:54 a.m. Car 19 called and stated that two more were spotted coming from the Southeast, over Monroe County. Also that they were side by side.

4:56 a.m. Monroe County [sheriff’s department] stated that they just spotted the object, and also that they are having calls from citizens. Called Selfridge Air Base and they stated that they also had some objects [presumably on radar] over Lake Erie and were unable to get any ID from the objects. The Air Base called Detroit Operations and were to call this Dept. back as to the disposition.

5:30 a.m. Dep. Patterson and I [Cpl. Broderick] looked out of the office and saw a bright light that appeared to be over the Ypsilanti area. It looked like a star but was moving from North to East.

6:15 a.m. As of this time we have had no confirmation from the Air Base.’

Washtenaw County deputies B. Bushroe and J. Foster formally stated: ‘This is the strangest thing that [we] have ever witnessed. We would have not believed this story if we hadn't seen it with our own eyes. These objects could move at fantastic speeds, and make very sharp turns, dive and climb, and hover with great maneuverability. We have no idea what these objects were, or where they could have come from. At 4:20 a.m. there were four of these objects flying in a line formation, in a north westerly direction, at 5:30 these objects went out of view, and were not seen again.’

Deputy Bushroe told the press: ‘It would swing back and forth like a pendulum, then shoot upward at tremendous speed, hover and then come down just as fast.’ Dexter police and Livingston County sheriffs, contacted by Bushroe and Foster, ‘reported that they saw the same objects engaging in the same maneuvers.’

March 17, 1966, Milan, Michigan. 4:25 a.m. Sgt. Nuel Schneider and Deputy David Fitzpatrick saw top-shaped objects making sharp maneuvers. They alternately hovered, rose and fell quickly, darted around at jet-like speed, their light dimming and brightening periodically. In a report to NICAP, the officers stated that two objects were operating together, circling and flying in formation, while a third object hovered at lower altitude.

March 20, 1966, Dexter, Michigan. About 8:30 p.m. Frank Mannor and family, and dozens of other witnesses, reported that a domed oval object with ‘quilted’ or ‘waffled’ surface and lights in the center and on each end had landed in a swampy field. Deputies David Fitzpatrick and Stanley McFadden parked car #34 adjacent to the area and began a search with Frank Mannor.

‘While in the woods area,’ their report states, ‘a brilliant light was observed from the far edge of the woods, and upon [our] approaching, the light dimmed in brilliance....The brilliant light [then] again appeared, and then disappeared. A continued search of the area was conducted, through swamp and high grass, with negative results. Upon returning to the patrol vehicle, the undersigned officers were informed that one of the objects had been hovering directly over the area where our flashlight beams had been seen, and then [it] departed in a west direction of flight, at high rate of speed.’

As he and other officers were rushing to the scene, Officer Robert Hartwell of the Dexter Police Department saw a luminous object buzz his car. Robert Taylor, Dexter Police Chief, said he watched an object in the field from Frank Mannor’s home on a knoll overlooking the area. It appeared as a pulsating red, glowing object. Through binoculars he saw ‘a light on each end of the thing.’

After World War II Selfridge expanded to its present size of 3,600 acres (1,500 ha), and in 1947 the Selfridge Field was renamed Selfridge Air Force Base.[22] The base grew steadily and soundly, acquiring impressive buildings and long concrete strips. In 1950, Headquarters for the Tenth Air Force, which was in charge of all Air Reserve records for a 13-state area in the Midwest, moved to Selfridge. It recalled and trained Air Reservists, and as an administrative group, the Tenth was the largest of the tenant units at Selfridge.[22]

From 1947–1970 the base hosted three successive Cold War aircraft units: the 56th Fighter Wing (28 July 1947 – 1952), which conducted the first west-to-east jet fighter transatlantic crossing (US to Scotland via Greenland, 1948); the 4708th Defense (later Air Defense) Wing from 1952–1956; the 439th Fighter-Bomber Wing (1952–7); and the 1st Fighter Wing (Air Defense) from 1956–1970.[23] The units’ Selfridge aircraft were F-51 Mustangs (439th, 1953-4), Lockheed P-80 Shooting Stars (439th 1953-6, 56th), F-84 Thunderstreaks (439th), North American F-86D Sabres (1st), and F-102 Delta Daggers (1st). In April 1954, the Selfridge’s 13th Fighter-Intercepter Squadron of the 4708th Air Defense Wing won the Eastern Air Defense Force rocket gunnery championship;[24] and on 10 May 1956, a Selfridge F-86D accidentally fired 22 Mighty Mouse rockets while on the ground.[25] In November 1957, Air Defense Command (ADC) assumed control of Selfridge AFB.”
