On 30 October 1967, an intriguing encounter happened near Boyup Brook, Western Australia.

The story broke in the Wednesday 1 November 1967 edition of ‘The West Australian’ newspaper. According to the newspaper, the sole witness reported the incident to a constable L Johnson of the Boyup Brook police station.

I had always wondered what happened to the police report of the event? No one I knew of, had ever seen it, or had a copy of it.  A couple of years ago, I thought that I might have located the report, when a Western Australian Police Department file, number 64/2885 was found, titled ‘Unidentified Flying Objects.’ However, the file contained only 56 pages, despite the file’s folio numbering system indicating that there had been 148 pages on the file. It turned out that there seemed to be missing folios, numbered 32-122, covering the years 1955-1969. So, no luck in locating papers dealing with a 1967 incident.

2017

Fast forward to mid-August this year, when US researcher and historian Barry Greenwood of Boston, visited the archives of the J Allen Hynek Center for UFO Studies, in Chicago. One of his aims was to search for Australian material, which had not been seen for years, if ever, by most Australian researchers. Barry located the long missing Western Australian Police Department report on the Boyup Brook incident. Many thanks to Barry for sharing this find with me.”

On 30 October 1971, the South Australian Division of the Australian and New Zealand Association for the Advancement of Science, held a one day symposium in Adelaide, South Australia, titled ‘The Unidentified Flying Object Problem.’

Dr Duggin presented a paper titled ‘The Analysis of UFO Reports.’ The ‘Condensed Papers’ only contain a summary of the talk, which I present below.”

Dr. Michael J. Duggin, an Australian scientist, was a member of the original ‘invisible college’ that studied UFOs and a senior scientist with the U.S. Air Force Research Labs at Kirtland Air Force Base.

In June 1965, Lieutenant Federico Machain, Argentine Air Force, chased a UFO (in his NA airplane) over the Punta Indio Naval Air Base (Spanish: Base Aeronaval Punta Indio), Argentina.

The UFO was also recorded on radar.

1. Reference: Section VIII, paragraph 73b, AR 380-5.

2. The following report of unidentified objects by Norman H. Brown, Acting Chief, Review and Analysis Section, AEC, has been received from the Senior Instructor, USAR Instructor Group, Oak Ridge, Tennessee, and is transmitted herewith in accordance with directive cited in paragraph 1, above:

‘At approximately 3:00 P.M. on July 19, 1953, an F-86 aircraft was observed flying over the Oak Ridge residential area, making circles at what appeared to the writer to be approximately 2,500 or 3,500 feet. The F-86 flew over the area in this manner for approximately ten or fifteen minutes. The writer, together with his wife, observed the aircraft through a pair of six power field glasses. After the aircraft flew in what appeared to be the direction of Knoxville, Tennessee, a black object moved out of a high white cloud, directly over the area the F-86 had been flying. This object began to travel, at a tremendous speed, in a large circle. This action on the part of the unknown object continued for at least five minutes. During the circle of this object, it appeared at times to be in the shape of a cigar and at other times round.’

‘This object was extremely black in color, having an appearance of a deep black metal exterior with a fine gloss. It did not leave a vapor trail or were there any lights of shine noticed. No sound was heard. The object flew east at a tremendous speed for what appeared to be approximately three miles where it stopped. The object was then joined by two more of these same objects. A formation similar to a spread ‘V’ was formed and the objects, at a tremendous speed flew in an eastward direction.’
