(“UFO also in Norway?”)
Transcript of the interview with Major Espen Steffensen,
Royal Norwegian Air Force.

Intervjuer:
Rapportene
Espen
Men våre
radarer har ikke observert den. Og Flykontrolltjenesten hadde ikke kjennskap
til den.”
Intervjuer:
“Forsvarets blikk er altså også rettet mot UFO-fenomener. Hvorfor er dette så
viktig for Forsvaret?”
Espen
luftrommet over oss.

Interviewer: “Many are wondering how the Norwegian Armed
Forces react to UFO reports. Are there any such reports sent to the Armed
Forces? And in the event, are these registrations taken seriously?
Espen Steffensen is Major. For 10 years he has been
involved in UFO work as part of his service in the Air Force – and during this
period he has examined approximately 20 UFO cases.”
Espen Steffensen: “Yes, I have been doing this in both
Northern Norway and Southern Norway
and have had this as an extra job. The Armed Forces receive the reports (UFO
reports) and treat them and pass them on to the Armed Forces Command.”
Interviewer: “Do the Air Force take this seriously?”
Espen Steffensen: “We absolutely take it seriously! And
it is quite important that we try to find answers to the questions asked and do
an objective job on this – and provide feedback to the person who reported to
us. The reports are then received by, for example, the Defense Command. And you
go out and try to figure out what is seen. We will contact the Air Traffic
Control at the airport and with our own radar stations to find answers to this.”
Interviewer: “And so, the Armed Forces finds a natural
explanation of most of the UFO cases – but there are still some things you can
not explain – even with the military’s advanced equipment at their disposal.”
Espen Steffensen: “This is a case over Vestfold
(County) a few years ago – where a cigar-like object was observed. And we could
not figure out anything via the radar or the Air Traffic Service what was
flying over Vestfold in this specific area. It was an episode in Sarpsborg a
few years ago when a UFO-like object was observed, but we never figured out what
the object was.”
Interviewer: “How did it fly?”
Espen Steffensen: “It flew over the city and was also
cigar-like. But our radars has not observed it. And the Air Traffic Service did
not know about it.”
Interviewer: “The view of the Armed Forces is thus
also directed at UFO phenomena. Why is this so important to the Armed Forces?”
Espen Steffensen: “It is, among other things, serious
because of the security of the nation. And it's also very important because of
relationships with civilians.”
Interviewer: “Why is it important in relation to the
security of the nation?”
Espen Steffensen: “It is clear that we have our radars
that surveilles what is going on in the airspace above us. And we prefer to
identify what objects fly over Norway .”
The interview with Major Espen Steffensen starts at
15:01 minutes into the documentary.

PHENOMENON SIGHTINGS FROM
AIRCRAFT FROM 1942 TO 1952”
By Richard F. Haines, Ph.D., 1985
(NICAP.org)
One of the cases Haines focuses on is the 24 March 1952
B-29 radar case.
The B-29 flew 60 miles west of Point Conception , California ,
when the UFO was painted on the radar screen.
The radar return (calculated to be
moving at about 3,000 mph )
was viewed by a U.S. Air Force B-29 navigator and a radar operator,
according to Haines.

UFO News Article:
“The R.A.A.F. Investigates Flying Saucers”
9 January 1954
(The West Australian, Perth , Australia )
The whole article:
“The R.A.A.F. today made its first official statement
on flying saucers and revealed that it had been investigating saucer reports
since 1947.
A spokesman said that in the past few years hundreds
of reports had been received and all were treated confidentially.
Each report is investigated by a R.A.A.F. intelligence
officer and 24 questions put to the person making the report are tabulated in a
two-page ‘report of aerial object observed’ form.
The reports are not published to prevent people from
making faked sightings and so that a true and accurate check can be made on
similar observations.
Meanwhile, Melbourne ’s
spate of flying saucer reports continued today when two more were reported.
One man said he saw a shining circular object about
30 ft. in diameter giving out a red vapour as it passed over Malvern, a Melbourne suburb.
A woman late today said she saw what she thought at
first was a large yellow star.
The ‘saucer’ stayed low in the sky and in the same
position for some time.”
This issue of The West Australian contains another UFO article:
“ ‘Pinkish Light’ Observed At Bayswater”
The whole article:
“Four people sitting on the lawn of a Bayswater house
about 11 o'clock last night saw what they think may have been a ‘flying saucer.’
At first they thought the object—‘a pinkish light
moving quite fast’—was a falling star.
However, when it hovered for a few seconds and
zig-zagged a little, they discounted this theory.
The object then faded out towards the sea in the Scarborough area after a few minutes.
As there was no noise, and the object was overhead at
one time, the four people decided that it could not have been an aircraft.”

“Category 11, SIGHTINGS FROM AIRCRAFT
The Sandy Hook / T-33 Incident
Sept. 10, 1951
Sandy Hook, New Jersey”
(NICAP.org)
The whole UFO case report:
“Brad Sparks:
11:35-11:37 a.m. (EDT) USAF pilots Lt. Wilbert S.
Rogers and Major Ezra S. Ballard flying in a T-33 at 20,000 ft from Dover AFB,
Delaware, to Mitchel AFB, New York, on a NNE course at 450 mph saw a silvery
metallic discus-shaped 30-50
ft object to their 11 o’clock position below their
altitude viewed against the Sandy Point area and silhouetted against the
ground. Rogers immediately turned left and descended to intercept the object
which then banked, revealing its flat round profile, no appendages, no trail,
and curved in more tightly on the turn than the T-33, covering an estimated
30-50 n. mi. in 2 minutes (about 1,000-1,500 mph ), and seen
projected against the ground near Red Bank and Freehold, New Jersey, as the
T-33 descended to 17,000
ft , accelerated to 550 mph and covering about
120° of its 360° turn during the sighting. The object passed within about 8,000 ft distance of the
T-33, descending from about 12,000 to 5,000 ft and headed at high speed out to sea
near Pt. Pleasant at about 120° heading until disappearance.
Fran Ridge:
This case caused a major stir at the Pentagon. Radar
case at Fort Monmouth preceded this incident. Before
our our research efforts (T-33 pilot reports to the media) all we had was the
GRUDGE Report and this final statement by Capt. Ruppelt: ‘The UFO that the
student radar operator had assumed to be traveling at a terrific speed because
he couldn’t lock on to it turned out to be a 400-mile-an-hour conventional
airplane. He had just gotten fouled up on his procedures for putting the radar
set on automatic tracking. The sighting by the two officers in the T-33 jet
fell apart when Metscher showed how they’d seen a balloon.’ Brad Sparks
analysis proves that the T-33 was NOT chasing a balloon. (See below).”
NICAP.org presents U.S.
government (U.S. Air Force) documents that pertain to the UFO case.

“PILOTS CHASE ROUND OBJECT”
12 September 1951
(Daily Examiner, Grafton ,
Australia )
Source: Trove, National Library of Australia , Canberra , ACT,
The whole article:
“Two Air Force jet fighter pilots reported to-day they
had chased a mysterious round flying object for 30 miles yesterday without
being able to catch it.
They estimated the object was travelling about 900 miles an hour.
One pilot, Lt. Rogers said: ‘I don't know if it was a flying
saucer, but it sure was something I’ve never seen before.’
He said they could not have caught it in an F86 Sabre
jet, America ’s
fastest plane.
Lt. Rogers described the object as white or silver
coloured and about the size of a fighter plane.
He said they lost sight of the object when it turned out
to sea. They first sighted it over Sandy
Hook , New Jersey .
The Air Force and Navy have announced that flying
saucers previously reported have been weather balloons.
‘This could not have been a balloon because it was descending
and no balloon goes that fast,’ Lt. Rogers said.
The two pilots reported the incident to Air Force officials
at Mitchell Field. The officials refused to comment on it.”
The incident occurred on 10 September 1951, according
to NICAP’s report (nicap.org)
on the case.
I also reported on this case on 2 November 2010:
