The Rapid City / Ellsworth AFB Incident (RV)
August 5, 1953
East of Rapid City, SD”
(NICAP.org)
The whole UFO case report:
“Francis Ridge:
There was a date discrepancy on this case. Ruppelt
said it was the 12th and subsequently NICAP listed that date in The UFO
Evidence. Project Blue Book, which didn’t list this as an ‘Unknown,’ showed it
clearly as August 5, 6, and the documents (see below) show that this case as ‘unsolved.’
This incident always impressed me, and apparently it impressed a lot of others,
too. For the die-hard skeptics at Project Blue Book this was the one they had
always asked for. Here was a good UFO sighting. ‘This was an unknown, one of
the best,’ a ground witnessed visual, with a ground radar tracking, and the
pursuit of the object by a jet interceptor that also locked on with its radar,
with all the maneuvers independently verified. The UFO was playing a cat &
mouse game with an F-84 ‘Thunderjet,’
the first USAF jet fighter able to carry a tactical atomic weapon. Major
Lawrence Tacker not only confirmed this case, but he wrote one NICAP member and
told him the Air Force had gun-camera photos of the object and radarscope
photos. (FSTS,243). Ellsworth AFB is located about 12 miles from Rapid City,
and in 1947, the base hosted the 28th Bombardment Wing (BMW), flying the B-29. In July 1949, the 28th
began conversion to the gigantic B-36 bomber. Ellsworth was one of the original
five Air Force Operational Storage Sites for nuclear weapons, and first
received its atomic bombs in 1952.
Joel Carpenter:
I've been checking on the model of F-84 assigned to
SAC, and it turns out that the F-84G was the one based at Rapid City at the
time. This was a tactical-nuclear-capable day fighter-bomber with straight
wings and gun ranging radar. ”

“Fran Ridge:
This is apparently case #15 of Major Dewey Fournet’s ‘motions
study’ UFOs cases as presented to the Robertson Panel in January of 1953,
whereby he deduced that UFOs were guided by intelligence and the flight
characteristics indicated that the intelligence was beyond ‘us.’ It is also

objects 60-100 ft
diameter at 12,000 and 18,000
ft drifting E to W on a 15-mile track passing overhead,
darting and dogfighting at estimated 400-450 mph , the upper object
dropping from 18,000 to 12,000
ft , at the end replaced by 8 more similar objects
appearing in pairs in the W about 15-20 miles distant. No sound.

Dan Wilson:
At 3:13 p.m. eight military witnesses and radar
confirmed the presence of two silver colored discs, estimated at 80' across, in the sky over
Hamilton AFB in Marin County, California . The discs appeared to be
dogfighting. They were joined by six other discs and formed a diamond
formation. They sped away as USAF F-86 fighter jets were scrambled. The sighting
lasted 75 minutes. This case is listed in the 1964 UFO Evidence, Section 11.”

“SFCC class on UFOs popular”
30 March 1978
(The Spokesman-Review, Spokane, Washington)
The article reports on Spokane Falls
Community College ’s 10 week long UFO course, “UFO Close Encounters.”
The course’s instructor was Lee Roberts, a local radio
newsman.
The college is located in Spokane, Washington.
Quote from the article:
“He (Lee Roberts) said he was in his back yard with
his family watching the year’s heaviest meteor shower, which always occurs on
that day, when he spotted something unusual.
Roberts said he saw ‘a light, about the size of a
small star or a satellite, make sharp zigzags across the top of the sky’ on two
occasions that day.”

“No easy explanation for lights seen Tuesday night”
26 July 1991
(Kingman Daily Miner, Arizona)
The lights were seen (from 9:00 p.m. until after 10:00
p.m.) near the Hualapai Mountains, Arizona on 23 July 1991.
Most of the witnesses heard no noise.
Quote from the article:
“Kingman resident Larry, a 20-year veteran of the U.S.
Air Force, said he was sitting outside watching the night sky as he does most
every night.
‘Everyday they refuel over Kingman, the Air Force
does,’ he said.
‘We figured it was just them refueling, but then they
(the lights) went back and forth across the sky, and jets just don’t do that.’
‘Besides there was no noise. I was in the Air Force
and I can hear jet noise real easy,’ he said.
A spokesman for Fort Huachuca, an Army base near
Tucson, said there was no Army activity in this area Tuesday night, ‘not as far
as I know of.’
An Air Force spokesman from Nellis Air Force Base near
Las Vegas was more direct.
‘We don’t do UFO’s,’ he said.
‘We don’t fly down there anyway. (But) as far as we
know we didn’t have anything down there Tuesday.’ ”

“UFO Sightings Are Reported In Venice Area”
31 August 1976
(Sarasota Herald-Tribune, Florida)
Quote from the article:
“Two Venice residents reported seeing unidentified
flying objects (UFO) late Saturday and early Sunday (28 and 29 August 1976).
Lori Nyland, 233 Warfield St., Venice, told the
Herald-Tribune she saw lights in the sky on three occasions late Saturday night
between 9:30 and 11:30 p.m.
Kathy Shane, 232 S. Grove St., Venice, reported seeing
fast moving lights in a V-formation in the pre-dawn darkness at 6 a .m. She described the
sightings as, ‘A flock of geese all lit up.’
The sightings both occurred in the industrial section
of Venice near U.S. 41 and Venice Farms Road.
Nyland told the Herald -Tribune she did not believe in
UFOs before she saw a single oval-shaped white light moving up and down a few
inches above the trees on U.S. 41.
‘Then it just disappeared.’
She said she again saw the light when she was
approaching her apartment. The second sighting was similar to the first, but a
third sighting consisted of five lights in a V-formation moving across the sky
and then zig-zagging just above the nearby tree tops.
Before this weekend’s sightings the most recent area UFO
sighting was in June when DeSoto County residents reported seeing an orange,
yellow and red UFO in the farmlands near Arcadia.’ ”

Translation of News Article From ‘CLARIN,’ Buenos
Aires,
July 7, 1965 (NICAP.org text):
July 7, 1965 (NICAP.org text):
(NICAP.org)
Quote from the news article:
“Numerous Personnel of the Antarctic bases of three nations: Argentina, Chile and Great Britain, in conditions of optimum visibility, observed (on 3 July 1965) the maneuvers of an unidentified ‘Flying Object.’ So state official communications from the area, including one from the Secretary of the Navy of our country. Independently, the ‘Clarin’ has communicated directly with the Decepcion Base, obtaining from the base commander the details of the sighting.
Santiago, Chile. 6 (Cables of AP AFP Reuter, ANSA y ‘Clarin
Agency’) Argentine, British and Chilean military and scientific personnel
sighted an unidentified flying object which gave off or glowed with a white
light, at high altitude and came at considerable speed in a Southeast
direction. The release indicates the object flew a zig-zag path and appeared to
hover momentarily suspended in the air. The information caused commotion, when
released to the public.”
