“An Air Force jet interceptor climbed to 20,000 feet yesterday [21 July 1954] in pursuit of an unidentified flying object sighted in the sky
between here and Boise 50 miles
away.
The Civil Aeronautics Administration here said the jet
was unable to get close enough to the object to see it clearly. The plane was
from the airbase at Boise
The CAA said the object might have been a weather
balloon, but it appeared to be drifting slowly against prevailing winds at that
altitude.”
