UFO News Article:
“Mysterious ‘Ghost Rockets’
Puzzling to Swedish Army”

12 August 1946
(The Victoria Advocate, Texas)

Quote from the article:
“Swedish military authorities plan to publish within the next few days a communique on an investigation they have been making of the ‘ghost rockets’ that have been streaking daily over Sweden since early July.

Between July 9-12 authorities received  300 reports of the missiles and since then reports have poured in daily. Fragments examined by scientists gave little in the way of clues.

In general the rocket is described as a small object with a flaming tail, which speeds at great height, making little sound. The longest flight of any of the missiles, so far as military experts could determine, was about 600 miles.

Swedish newspapers have been cautioned not to publish the names of places where the rockets appear.”

UFO Video Interview:
“UFOs and Government –
Interview with co-author Robert Powell”

Published: 3 September 2012
(Mutual UFO Network, Irvine, California)

Video text:
“UFOs and Government: A Historical Inquiry

This is an interview with Robert Powell on a new book he co-authored about UFOs and the government’s response. Robert is also the Director of Research for the Mutual UFO Network (MUFON).

Governments around the world have had to deal with the UFO phenomenon for a good part of a century. How and why they did so is the subject of UFOs and Government, a history that for the first time tells the story from the perspective of the governments themselves. It’s a perspective that reveals a great deal about what we citizens have seen, and puzzled over, from the ‘outside’ for so many years. The story, which is unmasked by the governments’ own documents, explains much that is new, or at least not commonly known, about the seriousness with which the military and intelligence communities approached the UFO problem internally.”

“Report ‘Saucer’ Over Atom Plant”

5 July 1952
(United Press article (contained in the Project Blue Book files))

Source: Fold3.com, Lindon, Utah

The whole article:
“Four Florida pilots, three of them World War II veterans, told today (5 July 1952) of seeing a ‘flying saucer’ hovering over the Hanford atomic plant at Richlands, Wash.

Capt. John Baldwin of Coral Gables, Fla., an air force pilot in the Pacific during World War II, who has 7,000 hours of air line pilot experience, said the object he and his companions saw early today was a ‘perfectly round disc, white in color and almost transparent with small vapor trails off it like the tentacles of an octopus.’

He said he was flying at about 9,000 feet and saw the object ‘just below a deck of wispy clouds about 10,000 to 15,000 feet directly above us.

All of us have been flying a number of years and we’ve seen all kinds of clouds and formations, bur none of us had ever seen anything like this before,’ Baldwin said.”

UFO Article (Blog):
“ ‘OPREP-3’ – A Classified US Military
Reporting Channel For UFO Incidents? – Part 2”

By Paul Dean, 8 June 2016
(UFOs – Documenting The Evidence, Melbourne, Australia)

Quote from the article:
“In Part 1 of this series ‘OPREP-3 – A Classified US Military Reporting Channel For UFO Incidents?’ I discussed a US military-wide reporting channel known as the ‘Operational Reporting’ system, shortened often to ‘OPREP.’ I highlighted that one category of OPREP, namely category 3, is defined as a serious ‘Event/Incident,’ and that UFO, or UFO-like events, had been reported directly to the highest levels of command in the 1970’s. Those events included the reporting of intrusive ‘unknown helicopters’ and ‘objects’ from nuclear-armed United States Air Force (USAF) Strategic Air Command (SAC) bases including Loring AFB, Wurtsmith AFB, Malmstrom AFB, and a host of others. Also, the United States Navy’s (USN) Pinecastle Electronic Warfare Range suffered a mysterious UFO event that was reported via the OPREP-3 system. Most importantly, these cases are not hand-down-rumours, but are supported by hundreds of officially release records obtained under the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) by researchers. I made specific efforts to image those records, especially for the debunkers, and will continue to do so in this Part 2.

OPREP-3 reporting instructions are laid out in a variety of publications at different levels of the US military. Perhaps the highest level doctrines to mention OPREP-3’s are those promulgated by the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff (CJCS). One recent example is a manual titled ‘Joint Reporting System Situation Monitoring Manual,’ and was promulgated on the 31st of January, 2011. It is coded ‘CJCSM 3150.05D’ and is unclassified in entirety. Beneath the CJCS, all the Unified Combatant Command’s (UCC) and Major Commands (MAJCOM) of the US Armed Forces publish their own versions of OPREP-3 doctrine, each slightly different.”

UFO Case Directory:
“Category 11, SIGHTINGS FROM AIRCRAFT
Three F-84 Pilots Encounter Manta-Ray,
Gun Camera Shots
March 3, 1953
Luke AFB, Phoenix, Ariz; Nr. Blyth, California”

(NICAP.org)

The whole UFO case report:
Fran Ridge:
I had read about this SECRET case in Ruppelt's book, but never gave it too much thought until I found the 11-page paper by Barry Greenwood. Our thanks to Barry for mailing me a copy so I could scan it; and to Wendy Connors for the great pictures. I supplied the Project Book Book Status Report #11 pages and then dan Wilson found 38 footnotes.com documents. This is also a Category 8 (photo) case besides being a Cat 11 (Sightings From Aircraft), and is double-listed on the Global Sighting Information Database on the NICAP site. This one even includes two videos from the gun camera shots.

Brad Sparks:
March 3, 1953; (130 miles W. of Luke AFB, Phoenix, Arizona), nr. Blyth, California (BBU)
1:25-1:32 p.m. (MST). USAF Capt. Roderick D. Thompson, 3600th Fighter Training Group, Luke AFB, instructor pilot in an F-84 at 25,000 ft 500 mph TAS heading 305° Mag spotted 300-500 ft wide aircraft leaving contrail crossing his path at 2 [10?] o'clock high position from left to right at about 35,000 to 45,000 ft and about 400 mph TAS, visible only by condensation vapor emitted from manta-ray shape flat surface. Student pilots of two F-84’s, Lt. Jack E. Brasher and Lt. Thomas W. Hale, saw the object but did not follow the pursuit. When Thompson turned (right?) to pursue object climbing at full power at about 560 mph, object made slight dipping turn to NW and began climbing at about 20° angle and object appeared to be very thin, and immediately began to form a heavy condensation trail behind it for roughly 1,000 ft and split in two for about 1,000 ft but which ended abruptly and moved with the object, the trail not being left behind. Thompson reached 30,000 ft and closed to within roughly 5-10 miles of object to a point over Colorado River N of Parker Dam, about 70 miles N of Blythe, when he took 151 frames or about 30 ft [6 ft?] of gun camera film of object, 16 mm N-9 camera, apparently at 16 fps 1/40 sec exposure setting. (BB Rpt 11; NICAP website; McDonald list; Ruppelt pp. 229-230; FUFOR Index)”

UFO Case Directory (RADCAT):
“Category 9, RADAR
The Rapid City / Ellsworth AFB Incident (RV)
August 5, 1953
East of Rapid City, SD”

(NICAP.org)

The whole UFO case report:
Francis Ridge:
There was a date discrepancy on this case. Ruppelt said it was the 12th and subsequently NICAP listed that date in The UFO Evidence. Project Blue Book, which didn’t list this as an ‘Unknown,’ showed it clearly as August 5, 6, and the documents (see below) show that this case as ‘unsolved.’ This incident always impressed me, and apparently it impressed a lot of others, too. For the die-hard skeptics at Project Blue Book this was the one they had always asked for. Here was a good UFO sighting. ‘This was an unknown, one of the best,’ a ground witnessed visual, with a ground radar tracking, and the pursuit of the object by a jet interceptor that also locked on with its radar, with all the maneuvers independently verified. The UFO was playing a cat & mouse game with an F-84 ‘Thunderjet,’  the first USAF jet fighter able to carry a tactical atomic weapon. Major Lawrence Tacker not only confirmed this case, but he wrote one NICAP member and told him the Air Force had gun-camera photos of the object and radarscope photos. (FSTS,243). Ellsworth AFB is located about 12 miles from Rapid City, and in 1947, the base hosted the 28th Bombardment Wing (BMW), flying the B-29. In July 1949, the 28th began conversion to the gigantic B-36 bomber. Ellsworth was one of the original five Air Force Operational Storage Sites for nuclear weapons, and first received its atomic bombs in 1952.

Joel Carpenter:
I've been checking on the model of F-84 assigned to SAC, and it turns out that the F-84G was the one based at Rapid City at the time. This was a tactical-nuclear-capable day fighter-bomber with straight wings and gun ranging radar.

NICAP.org presents U.S. government (U.S. Air Force) documents that pertain to the UFO case.
